I have a decent looking resume, but I would only be 20 when I started, and a lot of the programs seem to want you to have several years of experience. Do you think that my age would be a big factor? I've applied to mostly top tier schools, and I may add another "safety." I'll probably do a public health related internship over the summer. This whole thing is just super anxiety provoking. Anyways, good luck to everyone!

Your stats are pretty impressive, you should apply to Hopkins also.

Undergrad School: International school (American University of Beirut)
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: SOPHAS: 3.52; WES: 3.74 undergraduate and 3.63 graduate
Major/Minor: Medicine
GradGPA (if applicable): 3.63 (WES)
Grad Studies (if applicable): Medicine
GRE: 159 verbal (82nd percentile), 161 quantitative (79th percentile), 5 AWA (93rd percentile)
Experience/Research
(please, be brief):
1) Alpha omega Alpha award
2) Student representative council member for 2 consecutive years

Applied: John Hopkins (MPH), Harvard (SM. Cardiovascular epidemiology), UC Berkeley (MPH; focus epidemiology) , UCLA (MPH; focus epidemiology) , Emory (MPH; focus epidemiology) , Columbia (MPH; focus epidemiology), GW (Epidemiology), U of Michigan (Epidemiology), UW (Epidemiology), BU (Epidemiology)
Accepted: GW (12/20/2016), U of Michigan (12/23/2016)

I guess the wait is going to be prolonged. I don't expect to hear back from Hopkins and BU till after the holidays :( :(

Hi all! I'm trying to decide whether it would be worth it to choose a higher ranked program if it costs a lot more. I was accepted to GWU and that program would cost $67,000 plus living costs, which is ranked #14. My other option is the University of Iowa, which would cost around $30,000 plus any financial aid I might get (they don't send those until March), which is ranked #17. I also applied to Emory but haven't heard back, though that would cost a ton between tuition and living expenses. I went to Iowa for my undergrad and loved my experience there, but if it's worth it to go to a more well known school, would it be worth the extra debt? Really stuck right now. :/

Look at their employment rates post graduation, average starting salaries, etc. Also, what are your goals? Interested in working in DC? Then GWU MIGHT be worth the extra 40-50k long term or just if you'll think you'd be happier there in general. Imo, I don't think it's worth it, especially for the 3 ranking difference. Emory, however, might be worth the extra debt, as it has the potential to open doors outside of public health based on name recognition/prestige if you ever have a change in interest or creative endeavors on the side. Also, Emory has some of the best alumni networking, probably right behind Columbia and Harvard.

I can only say great things about the University of Iowa

If you are planning to stay in the Midwest then you might want to avoid the debt, however a more widely recognized named may open up more opportunities down the road.

I'm fairly certain from what I've read of other years that it's a one time thing.

Unless you're dead set on going to GW and/or living in DC, I would go with U of Iowa. It's still a top 20 school, but less than half the cost.

Penn said they'd let me know once I get my official letter in the mail and stuff. They have a lot of assistantships that would help. Philly is a lot cheaper in terms of living, where as boston is pretty expensive. My parents said they'd help me out with the difference of tuition with penn and boston.

I work with several people who got their M.P.H's from GW (I work in the DC area), and my colleague (who I believe is very level-headed and whose judgement I trust immensely) said that she wouldn't attend GW if she had to do it over again. Not hating on GW, nor anyone here who holds a degree from the Milken School, but I haven't heard the greatest things. In my opinion, the extra debt is not worth it unless you attend the following five schools, in no particular order: Michigan - Ann Arbor, Emory, Harvard, Hopkins, and Columbia. The average starting salary from even the best MPH programs (without work experience) are in the $60,000 - $75,000 range.

Agreed. Knowing what I do now, if I had it to do over, I would have waited a year and applied to programs along the west coast. Tuition isn't a factor for me (long story), but I think this election has scarred me. I can't wait to get out of DC.

As an aside, I also wanted to say that your concentration plays a huge role in salary/job chances. My adviser mentioned that in the past ten years everyone except one (visa issues) had a job within six months of graduating. However, she was only speaking for the Department of EpiBio; I have no idea of the other Departments' prospects. So, I agree with the list of schools where the debt is worth it, as mentioned in the quoted post, as they are probably excellent all across the board. If you are planning on attending an expensive school such as GW, think seriously about a career in federal government, as the loan replacement options are really good.

I've really enjoyed my educational experience at GW, as I've had wonderful opportunities to explore the vast realm that is HIV research (DC has the highest prevalence rates in the country), but I knew my research interests coming in. If anyone is interested in HIV, we have NHBS, the DC Cohort, and a partnership with the Epi surveillance unit at DC DoH HAHSTA, which is where I currently work, among other opportunities. Definitely do research on all programs of geographic interest before applying, and do even more in depth research when deciding where you want to go. MPH programs are a huge time and financial investment, so you really want to make sure you're making the best decision for yourself.

Good luck to everyone on their decisions.

Any advice for Columbia's phone interviews? What type of questions do they usually ask?

Hey, I just finished up with my interview. It was very relaxed. We essentially had a brief conversation about my background, a little about theirs, and some of what is going on in policy and management at Mailman. Wishing you the best!

You have outstanding experience! Without your exact GRE scores, it is a little more difficult to be certain, but based on everything else I would say that GWU is NOT a reach school for you. You can get in if your GRE scores are around the average for those admitted.

Also, I previously worked at Mathematica (DC office)! Congrats on the job offer; it's a great place to work.

I had a similar GPA and your GRE scores are much better than mine so you likely have a shot at Columbia. They really value relevant work experience and how it ties into the curriculum and opportunities they offer, so try to work that into your application if you haven't already. I think you'll get into at least BU and GWU since your stats are good!

Undergrad School: Boston University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.25
Major/Minor: Communications, Public Relations
GRE: 153V 150Q AWA 5
Experience/Research:
- 1.5 years (by fall 2017 semester) working in fundraising and development for a prominent Boston hospital by creating communications materials for our physicians in a wide range of disease and medical areas.
- Volunteer 1 year at therapeutic riding school for children and adults with mental or physical disabilities
- Volunteer 400 hours at local CT non-profit, went on two trips to Peru and Ecuador to build sanitation systems for rural communities
- President of a club sports team
- Multiple non-PH internships in public relations

LOR: Professor; two supervisors from current position in hospital development

Interested in: MPH - Health Management & Policy
Applied: BU (12/9), NYU (12/8), Columbia (12/12)
Accepted: BU (1/5 + $18k APEX scholarship)
Rejected:
Waitlisted: Columbia (2/9)

Invited to interview at Columbia HPM (1/13)

* Considering by GPA and GRE are low - what are my chances? I'm hoping that having over a year of full-time work experience in healthcare and strong LORs from professionals in the field will help make up for my low stats.
Thank you and good luck!!

I wasn't feeling too great about my likelihood of affording BU, but just got my merit package and I got the activist achievement award with 20k (over the first three semesters), which makes me feel a bit better but I will still be applying to tons of outside scholarships because $$$$!! Anyways, future applicants...don't underestimate your activism career and the causes you're passionate about, even when you have low test scores :)

I submitted my FAFSA and got the merit scholarship, but still no word on financial aid. I am pretty sure that gets sent separately later (even if you have already filled it out).

Also, congrats!!

My mail comes at 2:30, so I'm just waiting to see how much I get. This is pretty much the deciding factor for me on even considering BU.

When I'm adding my transcript on SOPHAS, I'm confused what to put for the subject. For example, I took Epidemiology, so should the course be under the subject Epidemiology or Public Health? I have the same issue with other courses such as Health Policy.

My understanding is that you put the listing department under Subject and name of the class under course, so for you:

Subject: Public Health
Course: Epidemiology

Only 12k from BU, not enough to make it a feasible choice for me. Good luck to everyone else on their amounts!

Has anyone who's been accepted to Hopkins been offered aid yet? Trying to figure out if I'm just not getting anything from them or if the offers haven't been made.

Thank you!! How has your time been at Columbia thus far? Any other general tips for application?

Is it ok to submit an application when your Sophas Transcript has not yet been verified? My transcript was delivered on 12/9 (late I know) and I want to meet the 1/5 deadlines. According to the SOPHAS website, it takes up the four weeks to verify the transcript, so by my delivery date, it would be as late as 1/6. Any help on this would be helpful!

It's weird, but SOPHAS does not verify transcripts until after you have submitted. If you're ready, go ahead and submit. Most of the programs I have talked to say as long as you e-submit by the date the application is due, they are ok with waiting a few days to have everything arrive and verified.

If everything is in go and submit. I submitted mine the middle of this month and was verified within 3 days, granted they could always take longer pending how many applications are being submitted.

Echoing what was said above, it is unlikely to take 4 weeks to verify. I have 10 transcripts and it took a week. I think you'll be fine.

Well, for what it's worth, I just got accepted into the MHS in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology program at Johns Hopkins. (I know, it's not exactly an MPH, but it falls under the school of public health lol)

Acceptance email said departmental scholarships are only available to PhD candidates but did say I should apply for financial aid. Given the program costs 50K tuition + living and I wasn't supremely interested in it to begin with, I'm pretty much ruling it out unless the financial aid office makes me an unexpectedly solid offer.
