Did anyone else get this email from GWU?? I can't believe they'll be making decisions already - I haven't even submitted all of my apps for other schools yet!

"Thank you for applying to the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. We are emailing to notify you that the Admissions Team will release admissions decisions regarding your application by November 15, 2016.
Thank you for your patience."

I submitted my app on 10/11, and was verified by 10/18. I did my apps and submitted in order of deadlines, so thats the only reason I submitted it so early, and not all my other apps yet.

Hey! Did you use the transcript service -is that why it only took a week for them to verify your app?

I did not use the transcript service last year and I was verified in less than one week. I think if you have courses from multiple schools, have a unique grading system, made a mistake on your transcript in the SOPHAS app, submitted your app during a high-volume time, etc - that would make the verification process longer.

Undergrad School: State school
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.61/3.29

2.5 years volunteering and 2 summers working for an environmental non-profit
1 week volunteering with Unite for Sight in Ghana, helping to provide eye exams to people living in poverty
7 months volunteering in an assisted living residence
6 months volunteering in the emergency department for a large hospital
Co-founder of a student run food pantry on my college campus and secretary for the Hunger Initiative
One summer interning for two optometry offices
1.5 years as an ophthalmic technician for a cornea specialist at a large ophthalmology practice
LORs: Associate vice chancellor of my university/professor for a leadership course, the ophthalmologist I work for, and my clinical manager
Special factors: Recipient of a full four-year scholarship for academics, leadership, and community service, for which I completed a series of leadership classes and over 800 hours of volunteer work.

Anyone care to comment on my chances? I don't really know anyone else who has applied for an MPH.

Your stats are great, I'd be surprised if any of these programs did not accept you. Good luck!

Hi friends! I'm applying to health policy/management programs. However, I'm extremely worried that I'm applying to only reach schools and not enough realistic ones. Any advice? I'm worried that I don't have enough experience (in which case, it may be best for me to hold off after graduation, work for a few years, and then apply. Thoughts?)

Undergrad School: Big 10 University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.4
Major/Minor: Medical Anthropology
Minor: Bioethics, Humanities, and Society

-Internship at local non-profit startup focused on nutrition information access in Lansing community
-2 med mission trips to the Dominican Republic
-1 service alternative spring break to Camden, NJ
-2 years as a Bio Teaching Assistant

-Various volunteer hours (hospital, community, campus)

You've already applied so don't stress yourself out with hypotheticals :)
While many HPM programs prefer students with a year or two of post UG work experience, I think you should be able to leverage your strong volunteer work and experiences to make a case for yourself at most of the schools you've applied to.
Best of luck!

Thanks for the reassurance! :) I'm just wondering if I should apply to more realistic schools while I still can...

Hey! Did you use the transcript service -is that why it only took a week for them to verify your app?
No, I did all my transcripts themselves. I submitted GWU and another school's pretty early, so I think they got verified so quickly because of how early it was in the app season? Now that I have those two in, every other app I've submitted has only taken a day-ish to be verified.

Thanks for the reassurance! :) I'm just wondering if I should apply to more realistic schools while I still can...
I don't think you'll need to. But for another perspective have you looked through last year's thread to see how your stats match up with those of students who were accepted to these programs?

Damn. I did really well on the AWA, but not as hot on the Quant section. Was hoping it would help compensate :/

I got into HPM programs at many of the schools you're applying to and had very similar stats! Don't worry about being straight from undergrad, around 50% of the people in my department are straight from undergrad.

Thanks so much! I really needed to hear that reassurance :)

Below is my first post on this thread. I have only edited it to include the schools I have been accepted into :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited: It's not always the stats guys. @medception you were 100% right. Admission isn't always based on your stats. All other facets of your application (work experience/ personal statement) are weighed in too. Thank you @medception for the encouragement. And here I was gearing for to retake the GRE come december. I even bought my ETS books lol Don't give up guys and good luck to everyone!

I am applying to only ONLINE MPH PROGRAMS. I will be abroad starting next year and with the added responsibility of my kids and husband, I can't commit to on-campus programs. Feel free to let me know your thoughts on my stats and choice of schools. If you know any safety school outside those I've listed, do let me know! Please & Thank you.

Hi everyone! I'm almost done submitting my applications for SOPHAS, probably will finalize the last few by tomorrow. I am extremely scared I won't get accepted into any of the schools I applied for (not very confident, clearly) mainly due to my low GRE score and average GPA. Late? I submitted my applications around mid-December last year haha! That doesn't really affect your chances of admission unless you're applying in the spring term. I think your stats are excellent, btw.

Hi Guys,

First time posting here. Would love some advice

Undergrad School: Georgia State University
Undergrad GPA/ Major GPA: 3.67
Major: Biology with Microbiology concentration
GRE: Took last Thursday 151 Q (45%) 152 V (54%) AW: ??

Experience/ Research: (I'll be brief)
- ~2 years mentoring and tutoring science
- most applicable volunteer experience is at Emory Clinic for 6 months and during an HIV testing event
- undergrad research one semester in molecular parasitology
-summer internship with the CDC, co-authored two manuscripts in preparation here
-just recently accepted an ORAU fellowship with the EPA doing epidemiology laboratory support

Interests: Infectious disease epi

Applied: No where yet, lol but Columbia (1), U Mich (2), GWU (3), and Emory (4)

I would like to know what are my chances of courses, as well as should I even apply to grad school now. My ORAU fellowship lasts until at least May 2017 and can be renewable for up to 3 years IF I get good reviews and there is enough funding. Last year, I was told 100% of fellows got their contracts renewed. I still want to apply and then defer for a year possibly IF I get accepted to Columbia or UMich. I've put in so much work preparing for grad school at this point! I pretty much just need to edit my SOP. Then again, I'm wondering should I just take advantage of this opportunity because it is a high probability of renewal, and apply for grad school another time. The work experience would definitely be great and is very applicable to infectious disease epi. Help!

I'd pick one safety just bc u never know. Something like GWU, Tulane, etc.

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

GWU and Tulane are NOT safety schools. We had an 11% admissions rate this year, and Tulane is higher ranked than we are. However, your stats are high and your experience is amazing, so I don't think you'll have an issue assuming you write a good essay and have great rec letters. If you really want to add in a safety school, you can always apply to your state school if you have one.

Hey guys I am applying to SLU and Tulane (as my top choices) and my gpa is 3.16 (Sophas) and I am retaking the GRE this Thursday (previous scores pretty low). I also just found out I will be published this upcoming year. Have been using SAS programming for some months doing survival data analysis, been a development intern, and currently work as a stockroom attendant in the chemistry department.

So what are my chances overall do you think?!

If you score 152/153 on the GRE you're good for Tulane imo. Assuming you have decent ECs to compensate for the lackluster GPA

Yes my EC's are quite good. I have over nine years in volunteering for a non profit. I've been on 2 medical mission trips and 3 regular mission trips. Volunteered at hospitals and other places. I have 4 great LORs from professors and one from an MD I shadowed while on the medical missions. The only thing that is hurting me is the gpa and gre!

Maybe you are both right! Perhaps in your department it is only 10% but school wide (including their online program maybe?) it's higher?

Anyway, do you guys have any suggestions on other schools that have strong focus on behavioral interventions? I'm also thinking to do PhD afterwards.. so strong research program would be a huge + ! :)

True. I may have misunderstood what he said. Says quite a bit about our epi program though :D

From 2013 data, they accept 1464/2259 applicants in order to get 427 enrollments, so the rates are definitely not that low. Acceptance rates for epi are similar to those in other fields for other competitive programs with strong epi departments. The number you heard may have been something like "new enrollments as % of applications", which was 18.9% back then, and a data point tracked by ASPPH.

To echo what werunthis already said, I think you should have a safety. I believe your chances are great, but maybe add BU and/or GWU. If you're interested in PhD, I think you should take a much closer look into what about each school really interests you. It's a bit easier to get into a doctoral program at the same school where you completed your MPH. For the same reason, only apply to schools that truly are in line with your interests - don't rely solely on rankings.

Not to make this forum political by any means, but I hope everyone is doing okay today and thank you all for the sense of community and support while applying!

Any advice on where else I should consider applying?

I know this isn't east coast, but I know Colorado School of Public Health puts a huge emphasis on Native/Indigenous health. They have a scholarship intended for Native students and do a ton of research on community health on reservations. They are also less selective than the programs you applied to already. The other place you might consider is SUNY Buffalo. It'd be a definite safety; I'm suggesting it only because it's on the east coast and there is a Seneca reservation nearby. It might be worth looking to see if there are any professors at UB that share your interests.
