MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haven't heard from Columbia concerning interviews after applying to the HPM program. Is this a bad sign? Application confirmation from Columbia received 12/12

I applied on 11/7 and haven't heard from them regarding an interview, and I'm not panicking. My understanding is that not everyone is interviewed. I got into Penn without an interview, and as you can see many others were requested to do one.

I got an email on 12/1 saying my application was complete and was forwarded to the department for review. Interview notification was sent on 12/21. Interview on 12/26.

What are your stats?

Is it possible they're interviewing us high GRE and somewhat middle-to-low GRE people?

Harvard SM2 or PHS PhD applicants - are we going to receive some sort of portal access where our decisions will eventually be posted? Have you heard anything about this?

Hey everyone! Congrats on all of the acceptances! I was wondering if anyone had a rough timeline for hearing back from UMich? I've applied to their environmental health sciences program and got the email with directions on how to make an account on November 1st.

Thanks!!

I'm applying for EHS at U of M also. I got my email to get on the wolverine access on 12/19 though. What concentration are you going for? I know the EHS department at Michigan is tiny, so we should know soon-ish.

Maybe it's a component they use in their evaluation to offer scholarships? That would make sense, seeing as you all scored 80th+ in every section
I really hope this is the case. Columbia HPM is one of my top 3 choices and if I got a solid scholarship, it'd just be amazing 🙂

I'm slowly panicking. Currently waiting on Emory (MPH) and UNC (MSPH/PhD). Has anyone heard back from these epidemiology programs?

I just got accepted to Johns Hopkins!!

Right now Im torn between BU (won't have to spend money on moving since im already here) and JHUSP (amazing reputation + 11 month program).

Any thoughts on if the debt is worth it to get a degree from JHUSP?
Congrats!! May I ask your stats?

thanks!

For people who have heard back from Michigan did you get an admissions decision via wolverine or email??

It's a bit tough to say, since you haven't given details on research experience/extracurriculars. Also, what concentration are you targeting?

Very difficult to determine chances without work and research experience. With stats alone, I believe you have a good chance at Columbia, but a lack of work experience would change that.

LOL "Crapshoot" I totally agree with you... just gonna take my chances. Thanks for the response!

I totally agree that your stats/profile make you a strong applicant, and especially in regards to Columbia I know they are pretty good about evaluating volunteering to count as experience 🙂 Good luck, I think you have a lot of acceptances coming your way!

Anyone hear from Hopkins about scholarships? Really hoping for some FinAid, or one of those Sommer Scholar spots...would be a really big pull.

Your experiences are pretty solid. I agree with werunthis, you have a good shot at most of the schools you have applied to. I applied to Brown and Yale as well, but I feel like their acceptance rates are really low. I guess it's worth applying there just to see what happens!

Also got the Harvard portal link 🙂

Just one more page to check daily >.<

Still waiting on them, UMich, Emory, Columbia, U of AZ, UNC, UCLA, and NYU Cross-Continental. Anybody heard from any of them? I applied for Health Behavior for all (except Columbia - SMS).

I got into UNC last Monday (Im pretty sure that was the day).

Heya! Your application looks great, but double-check the expiry for your GRE scores. Most places require them to be less than five years old. It looks like you are just past that cut-off so maybe bring that up to the schools you are applying to just to avoid any hiccups. (I hope they are fine with the date because you did really well!)

Thanks for your feedback!! I also was worried I'd need to retake the GRE but after looking into the fine print and speaking with someone at ETS, I found out that I wouldn't need to and the scores should still be valid. PSA for anyone else who was in a similar situation:

"Your GRE® test scores were reportable for five years after the testing year in which you tested (typically July 1-June 30, except for the 2010-11 testing year which was July 1, 2010-July 31, 2011). GRE scores earned prior to August 2011 are no longer reportable. "
-Quoted from an email ETS sent me. I called to confirm exactly what this meant, and they said that because I took the test in August 2011, my scores are valid until the end of the 5th year (the way they count a "year"), which for me should be June 30, 2017.

In hindsight, I should have contacted the schools directly to check that they would accept the scores, but if ETS considers them valid then hopefully that's good enough for admissions, too.

Excellent! That is great news! 🙂
I would have fought tooth and nail as well to ensure that those scores would be valid. Congrats and best of luck on your applications!

Congrats!! May I ask your stats?

thanks!
Yes! My GPA was 3.3 I went to a very non traditional liberal arts college. My GRE scores 147 quant, 156 verbal, 4 AWA
I took statistics in college and did fine which probably helped my terrible quant score. I also had a 4.0 GPA from graduate level courses I took.
I've worked for 3.5 years at an international healthcare improvement org doing project management on programs across the globe, before that I spent a year working in education and outreach at planned parenthood and currently I manage the development of online courses for clinicans specifically in OB. I also held several international internships in Rwanda and Brazil focused on women's health while I was in undergrad. I believe my experiences in the field and strong recommendations made my acceptances possible so far.

Hi everyone! I am new to this forum, and I only applied to 2 places (U Minnesota and UNC-Chapel Hill) for Community Health Promotion and Health Behavior respectively. I've noticed that UMN seems to get back to people really early, but the thing is that I didn't apply by December 1st...it was more like January 1st. Does anyone have any insight into UMN's turnaround time for those relatively late applications?

Congratulations!
Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the scholarships at JHU are restricted to MPH students or if they are also available to MHS (Masters of Health Science) students as well?

Hi everyone,

Congrats to all those that have been accepted. And good luck to those awaiting decisions!
I found out about 2/3 decisions today so I will be posting:

Undergrad School: Large state school
Undergrad GPA: ~3.6
Major/Minor: Biology & Spanish
GRE: 162V/165Q/4.5W
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
-Research
-Teaching
-Public Health Volunteering
-Etc, etc
I'll share more if you PM.

Interested in: Health Policy, Population Health
Applied: GWU MPH (10/2016), UMD MPH (10/2016), JHU MSPH (10/2016)
Accepted: GWU (10/2016), JHU (1/2017)

Anyone have advice for getting scholarships at JHU? I have some tough decisions to make, and financial aid plays an incredible role. Thanks!

I think they start sending out scholarship stuff in Feb from what I hear/read.

That username is too real.

Anyway, I applied to UMN (12/1) and I haven't heard back yet. I'm actually a little embarrassed to share this but I looked through the 2016 forum and tried to average the acceptance dates and it came out to around 1/28 so there is still plenty of time, no need to worry! Hope this helps 🙂

Anybody get the Harvard MyFinAid email?

So glad the FAFSA is using tax info from 2015 - I've already submitted mine because I'm anxious.

In an effort to stop refreshing my email constantly, I went through last year's forum and found typical acceptance dates for these schools if anyone needs a ballpark!

Brown University: (03/02), (03/19)
ColoradoSPH: (01/15), (01/26), (02,03), (02/08), (02/11), (02/18)
Yale: (01/07), (01/28), (02/05), (02/12), (02/18), (02/25), (03/03)
Columbia: (02/11), (02/16), (02/24), (03/10), (03/17)
Boston University: (01/14), (01/22), (01/28), (02/10), (02/18)
GWU: (01/04), (01/14), (01/21), (01/28), (02/05), (02/18), (03/30)
NYU: (02/03), (02/17), (02/22), (03/03)
Emory: (01/19), (02/01), (02/04,05,08,10,11,15,17) , (03/07)

I only included the earlier admission dates, so don't be discouraged if you don't get an acceptance right away! I've seen people get accepted late in March and in early April, it just really depends on when you submitted and your program 🙂

Thanks! I got a word doc of some of these dates as well, but did you happen to find anything on Harvard? I couldn't seem to get any good estimates when I poured through the previous forums

I emailed Harvard when I first applied and they said I should hear between end of Feb - mid March, so I'm not even thinking about them now hahah

I know right! 😀 thanks so much, that makes me feel better (also worse because I'm super impatient, but I'd rather get accepted late than not at all)! Best of luck!

I looked through gradcafe and last year it was towards the end of February and very beginning of march (4-8), so definitely spot on to what Harvard emailed acdual 🙂

Does anyone know when Tufts will start letting people know? Or has anyone heard? I have a "4-6 weeks from mid-November" in an email from them, but we're past that timeline. Looking at last year's thread, it seems like people got acceptances in the last week of December. I applied in September and haven't heard and am clearly being super calm about it. 😵
