MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got into Columbia for EPI with a certificate in global health <3!!!

Congrats! Hey there fellow Epi student 🙂 Can you view your official decision letter yet, or is yours still in "Preview Application Proof" stage?

Hi, I'm new here! I received my official decision letter to Columbia (Epidemiology), along with many of you! I didn't receive any notification about scholarships though. Are we supposed to complete the FAFSA before 2/15 to be considered for merit-based scholarships, or is that based on whether you met the preferred deadline of 12/1/16? Thanks! 🙂

Sooooooo excited to say I'm also in at Columbia (Epidemiology/Infectious Disease)!!! It's been my top choice in the back of my mind for so long and now I'm just ecstatic. But looks like no $$$ for me and I have no idea how I'm gonna afford this. Hope something works out but that scholarship from BU is gonna make this a tough decision. :dead:

Also I can't believe admitted student day is March 3rd. I booked a flight to New York on the evening of the 3rd awhile ago to visit friends. Don't know if I'll be able to move it to attend the event but that timing is ridiculous haha

I am in the same exact situation with Columbia vs. BU...and I am also epi/infectious disease!

Hey y'all. I'm new here (been lurking here for the past few months). Just got into Columbia (Biostatistics with Social Determinants of Health certificate). So shocked and happy, and I'm so excited for everyone else! :soexcited:I notice there's not a lot of Biostats people on here, so I guess I'll represent haha.

-Somewhat extensive quantitative background (Calculus I-III, Linear Algebra, Computer Science, Econometrics, Statistics, etc)
-Took courses with Emory Rollins professors through Emory's Human Health undergraduate program (Health Policy, Epidemiology)

Interested in: MPH/MSPH in Biostatistics.
Applied: Columbia, Boston (BU), Tulane, George Washington, and UGA (The University of Georgia). Applied 1/15. Verified 1/24
Accepted: Columbia (2/8), George Washington (2/8), Tulane (2/6), UGA (2/14)
Rejected: N/A
Waitlisted: BU

I hope this gives some inspiration to future applicants! Don't worry about not having high GRE scores, a spectacular GPA or extensive research experience (because I didn't have any of those). Apply to your dream schools, just make sure your passion for public health shines through with your essay. And apply early to get those merit scholarships, something that I regretfully didn't do. Good luck!:woot:

I'm applying to biostatistics as well! Also got accepted into Columbia and Tulane, and waiting for BU. We have a very similar timeline too haha!!

My first choices are Berkeley and JHU. I applied to the Bloomberg Scholarship with no real expectations. I'm really anxious about the fact that I haven't heard anything from Berkeley or JHU when so many have gotten acceptances. (My congrats!) Thanks for being a great resource SDN community! Sooooo anxious....

for anyone wondering if you'll hear from Columbia re: decision or scholarships, probably not this week. About a foot of snow in the area!

Anyone hear back from...

- UNC MPH-RD
- JHU MSPH-RD
- Colorado Anschutz MPH Community & Behavioral Health

If so, what time did you submit/was it verified?

Still waiting on Emory Global Health (although app was only sent to dept. 1/24) as well.

Trying to figure out how many Dietetic Internships I need to apply to next week because I haven't heard back from anyone except UTHealth (accepted).

Update: Just got into UNC MPH-RD!!!! Literally shaking.

I'm wondering if folks have opinions about UCLA vs UC Berkeley. It's my feeling based on what I've heard from friends and colleagues who have gone to either school that Cal pushes the more academic, research heavy skills and UCLA focuses on a wider skill set. Has anyone heard similarly?

I'm sure you can go into any career you want from either school, but the way each program approaches your education is important. I haven't heard back from Cal HSB but I'm in at UCLA CHS.

Got in and love Columbia's HPM program, but no scholarship letter. Unfortunately, this means I'll probably end up passing unless there is some surprise in the financial aid.

Did anyone send an addendum in to explain GPA? I'm worried I sent one to all my schools but Emory ( which I got into). And now I'm like did I screw it up for myself

Does anybody here have any knowledge of how Harvard is rolling out decisions? It sounds like one person had gotten a rejection so far and the my.harvard site only indicates decisions start getting sent out via e-mail in February... I need a little more info than that!

I sent an addendum to all my schools, including Columbia and got in there as well as Emory. Hope that helps!

It seems like Berkeley sent out a batch of acceptances in mid January and end of January. Does anyone know their general pattern? Will it just be a drip of acceptances from now till early March?

updated my stats as I just got into BU today with merit $$ (won't find out how much for another 7-10 days).

Undergrad School: Boston University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 2.87 (thanks biochem, calc 2 and all the other fun ones)
Major/Minor: Biology and Public Health Minor
SOPHAS other/public health/socio-behavioral: 3.5
GRE (including date taken) Date: 11/12/2016; V 158 (80th %) Q 152 (47th %) W 4 (59th %)

Interested in: Global Health - development/program design/social entrepreneurship
Applied: BU, GWU, Columbia (maybe?), Emory
Accepted: (1/12) GWU, Emory ( 01/31), BU (02/09 $$)
Rejected: N/A
Waitlisted: N/A

I'm not sure if I should apply to Columbia because I received an email extension and its closer to home (live in NJ). I applied to all Global Health Programs so my decision is tough as it is.

Any advice on applying to Columbia's Global Health program with the extended deadline considering the programs I already got into would be much appreciated!!

Spoke to a Professor at Harvard earlier this week (Feb 7th) and he said "Decisions from the school should be going out soon." Not suuuuper helpful, but hopefully that means before the end of next week!

Does anyone have any dates on when Colorado might be sending out their decisions? I was directed to the office of student affairs and had to leave a voicemail.

For what it's worth I received an acceptance into their HPM tract on 22nd January. I'm pretty sure I applied later than you did though - I'd say mid December?

That's awesome!! Congratulations! I applied to UW's MPH/RD program but they aren't getting decisions out until end of the month... Dying from the wait! I didn't apply to UNC's program only because it was on the opposite side of the country, but from my research it sounds like one of the better RD programs. Do you know how big your cohort will be?

Other: My GRE scores are obviously very low but I believe what makes me a strong candidate were my essays. Having strong work experience is crucial and it's ultimately what saved my butt at the end of the day. I was very honest in my interests. Make sure to mention professors you specifically want to work with if accepted into the program.

I've seen a lot of Emory BSHE people get their acceptances but I haven't heard yet. Anybody else who applied BSHE still waiting??

Also waiting on UCLA CHS. This waiting game is no fun.

I'm also waiting. I received confirmation from RSPH on 1/18 that my app was being forwarded to BSHE. Still no decision letter in my OPUS account :/

Im also still waiting! Emory BSHE is my number 1 program, but I'm losing hope. Applied 12/8, received completeness / opus account on 12/28, forwarded for review 1/23

Same, even down to the day I got the "forwarded to your first choice department" email on the 1/18. I'm hoping what they said during the webinar wasn't a tease, and that we'll know by COB tomorrow - there's a sale going on for Frontier airlines right now (that ends tomorrow) where flying to Atlanta from where I am for their Admitted Students Day would be really inexpensive. I'd like to know so I can work things out and such.

Just received an Dept of Epi and Biostat fellowship from UMD! (not much $ though...) Anyone else?

So I noticed a lot of people got their Columbia admissions yesterday, so congrats to you! I'm still waiting to hear from them. I got a financial aid survey link from them mid-January, but I just assumed everyone who applied got one, but some people implied the ones they are interested in got them? Does that mean it's safe to assume I'm in? And if they already decided, what's taking them so long in announcing it? Ughh sorry...the wait is killing me. I am so impatient.

When is Emory's Admitted Students Day?? I can't find anything on OPUS....

I'm a bit late to the game...

Still Waiting: JHU, Yale, NYU

I actually just heard back from Emory and I didn't get into their GLEPI MPH program, but they offered me a spot for their EPI MPH program instead!

Finally heard back from Columbia, 1st and only rejection. 🙁 Honestly just so happy to be done with the waiting game, and it wasn't my top choice program anyway. Huge congrats to everyone who got in & good luck to those still waiting to hear! Btw I did the financial survey so it may not be an indicator of admission status after all.

I think in professor speak, this translates to "any time between tomorrow and two months from now" 😛

Kidding...hopefully.

There with you. I also received the forwarded email on 1/18 to BSHE, but nothing on opus. I hope that we hear soon.

Just got my first rejection as well. It was my back-up back-up, so I'm not too upset over it, but my ego is just a little bruised. :/

So for next year when they start releasing decisions, hearing back from Columbia earlier in the email batches may be better news. Who knows with these schools though 😉
