MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So for next year when they start releasing decisions, hearing back from Columbia earlier in the email batches may be better news. Who knows with these schools though 😉

I got my rejection today too, seems like they do acceptances, then waitlists, then rejections. So, you know, next year people watch out!

That's awesome!! Congratulations! I applied to UW's MPH/RD program but they aren't getting decisions out until end of the month... Dying from the wait! I didn't apply to UNC's program only because it was on the opposite side of the country, but from my research it sounds like one of the better RD programs. Do you know how big your cohort will be?
It will be 24 students total I believe! Yes I currently live in Texas so it would be a big change for me.

Is there a way to confirm that your FAFSA went to your schools through FAFSA or do you have to contact your school? Just concerned because Columbia's financial aid site says "Students that have provided all required information at the time of admission will receive a financial aid award letter with their offer of admission, or shortly thereafter." seems like people heard back about scholarships but not aid? I'll probably just call tomorrow and ask about this.

Also just got into the Epi - Global track at UW! Acceptances 2 days in a row!

Woo! I found out I was accepted to both Emory MSPH in global health and Columbia for an MPH in epi. I wrote in my applications I live in Korea now but I was very clear in stating I am an American and now Emory has me listed in OPUS demographic info as a Korean which is ironic because I am not even Asian, and they sent me paperwork to apply for a student visa -_-. I e-mailed them my passport and said I am American. I hope this doesn't effect any scholarships they would have awarded me.

In at UC Berkeley and University of Washington! Got the Cal email while I was reading the UW email. Very overwhelming moment. 😱

May I ask what department at UW you applied to?

Does anyone know when Emory gets back to us about financial aid/scholarships? I know they're supposed to be pretty good with packages, but I didn't even receive an email that my stuff was forwarded to my department, let alone that I was accepted (which it has now been a while since I found that out via OPUS). So, it's safe to say I'm a little concerned about future communication regarding aid packages.

I'm in the same boat as you regarding the lack of emails! I emailed admissions regarding information about visit day, and I was directed to a link for the admitted student portal (I was told that we will receive emails about this portal shortly). According to that, financial aid packages should come out in March.

Got accepted to the University of Washington (Epi) and Berkeley (Epi/Biostats) literally within an hour of each other. My UW email came at 4:38 and my Berkeley e-mail came at 5:24. Timelines:

Berkeley: Applied 11/29; Verified 12/9; Complete 1/17; Accepted 2/9
UW: Applied 11/29; Confirmed 12/21; Accepted 2/9

Full stats page 7.

Applied: Johns Hopkins (12/1), Cornell University (12/7), George Washington University (12/15), Emory University (1/5), Columbia University (1/15), Yale University (1/15), New York University (2/1)
Accepted: Cornell (1/14), GWU (1/24), Columbia (2/8), Emory (2/9)
Rejected: N/A
Waitlisted: N/A
Still Waiting: JHU, Yale, NYU

I actually just heard back from Emory and I didn't get into their GLEPI MPH program, but they offered me a spot for their EPI MPH program instead!

Same here about the no for GLEPI and yes for EPI MPH! :highfive:

Background: BS Biology. I had a low GPA but decent GRE (161V, 160Q) and have worked in a hospital for 3 years.
Applied: Berkeley (12/1), Columbia (12/7), Emory (1/5), BU (1/5), Tufts (1/12), GWU (1/15) *my third letter was not submitted until 1/20 though
Accepted: Emory (2/2)
Rejected: GWU (2/2), BU (2/9)
Waitlisted: N/A

When is Emory's Admitted Students Day?? I can't find anything on OPUS....
In this booklet I got during grad fair, it says March 30-31: visit Emory (For Admitted Students)
Aug 16-22- New Student Orientation

Okay thank goodness there's an actual admitted students portal with information because the information we're getting from admissions is lacking....Thank you! Hopefully they send that out soon and I don't have to send them a confused email as well haha

Like seriously? Can you please give me your timeline?
I submitted by application 9/12, coursework was verified 9/28, I got an email from Brown saying my application was complete 11/30, and got my acceptance email 2/7. Good luck!!

They emailed me!

Anybody who was accepted last year or this year who got a scholarship, did it come in your admission letter or did it come later?
It can come later. Some of us contacted HBHE department. I was told they had not issued scholarships yet for Fall 2017 and that "the Admissions Chair is shooting for next week sometime." They are a little behind in reviewing applications this year, so they're trying to see a number of admits before making any decisions.

Also, even if you don't get a notification of a scholarship next week, there is always a chance that an admitted student who was given one will go elsewhere, which means more $$$ for others. I was told last year not to give up all hope until mid-March once everyone has made their final decisions. Congrats and good luck! 🙂

In at Berkeley HSB! Did anyone admitted to Berkeley find out their scholarship/financial aid with their acceptance email? I'm confused about their process and want to make sure I'm not missing anything. I'm in at my top three schools so now it's time to play the $ game.

Please let us know what you hear from Columbia if you decide to ask 🙂

Does anyone know (or have heard from previous years) the chances of getting of Columbia's waitlist? They said I would hear back on May 15th or sooner, but since Columbia is my top choice, I was wondering if it's realistic or not.

Thank you and congratulations to everyone on their acceptances!

in the same boat.. but mine says they'll get back to me by May 15th or sooner (!). Which department did you apply to, btw? I applied to HPM.

woah when did you send in your application/have your interview?

EDIT: Nevermind just noticed that this is for getting off the waitlist.

Anyone's Columbia application update (for those who have accepted). I still just see the preview application proof- assuming official decision letter and any scholarship info hasn't been uploaded yet.

Thanks!

has anyone heard more from yale re: admitted student days, etc.?

Just accepted into the online-part time MPH program at Hopkins!!!! OVER THE MOON!!!

Congratulations! I'm hoping to hear something soon about the part-time online MPH program. When did you submit your application and when was it verified? Also, do you mind if I ask your stats? Again, congratulations. 🙂

I called Columbia's financial aid office and apparently, most of the merit-based scholarships have been allocated. Criteria for merit-based scholarships were based on application quality and how strong of a candidate they think you are, not based on whether you submitted your application by the preferred deadline of 12/1/16. Merit-scholarships may be awarded in the upcoming months if applicants decline acceptance.

Need-based aid, based on FAFSA, will be awarded sometime in the upcoming weeks to months, but it's hard to tell because they have so many things to work out. I told them that FAFSA considered me as an independent student (and I therefore did not need to provide parent financial information), but their website says that we are supposed to fill out parent financial information. They said that you can provide parent financial information on FAFSA if you want because sometimes that may help applicants receive more need-based aid, but it's not a requirement of theirs.

So I'm guessing I won't get any merit-based scholarships and I won't make a correction to my FAFSA to add parent financial information.

Recommended for admissions to UC-Berkeley??? I'm shocked!! Hope more good news is headed everyone's way :highfive:
Hey, I got the same. What does recommended mean? It seems like we are in if the Graduate Division approves that we meet the minimum qualifications. Please correct me if I am wrong. Good luck to us!

It means that the department/program you have applied to thinks you're good enough for admission but the ultimate decision about whether or not to admit you is up to the graduate school. As someone who used to work in graduate admissions, 99.99% of the time, "recommended" just means "accepted". Congrats!
