MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is true that Yale does not calculate GPAs. YSPH's grading system is Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail for classes that evaluate performance, and the numeric cutoffs for each of these marks can be different in every class. Classes based on attendance alone, such as required seminar courses, are Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory...we end up in with transcripts covered in Hs, HPs, Ps, and Ss. The goal of this is to encourage collaboration as there is no competition for class rank. When you apply to PhD programs or jobs or anything else, Yale will refuse to do a GPA conversion, even if wherever you apply to asks for one. They know the difference between Honors/High Pass/Pass can be different in different classes, so they have no way to convert these marks into a standardized GPA. Students raised concern about applying to PhD programs/med school during my orientation, and we were basically told that Yale MPH students have great success applying to PhD/medical programs. They told us that the programs we apply to are always able to figure out our transcripts and are more concerned with overall success in our programs than exact GPAs. We were assured it would not hurt us in any way. I definitely see that students here are successfully being admitted to amazing programs, so I do believe this is true. I wouldn't worry about it at all. I truly cannot imagine Yale sticking with a system that would hurt their students or their program placement rates.

Also, I find it less stressful to move though the program focusing on each class individually rather than worrying about an overall GPA. I have actually really liked this set up and I do believe it is beneficial.

Are you by any chance in the EMD program? I was admitted to the MPH EMD program and received scholarship $$$ so now Yale is probably at the top of my list.

Has anyone heard back from UNC Gillings, specifically Health Behavior? Anxiously awaiting! Also, is anyone else doing a MPH/MURP dual degree??

Yes, I heard back from UNC HB at the end of January. I have not heard back about scholarships or financial aid, however. I do know that their student services administrator left her position recently, which may explain why they've been very slow on certain things.

Also, a friend of mine I haven't talked to recently, I've heard through a mutual friend, applied to the MPH/MURP degree, but I don't know anything about it. Sorry.

I’m also waiting to hear back from that dept. I just got into GW and they are the last school I applied to while UNC was the first, it’s taking forever.

Just heard back from Yale Financial Aid!

YSPH Need-Based Grant: $10,000
Horstmann Merit Scholarship: $12,500

Total Scholarship: $22,500 (renewable for the next year as well)

I was really unsure about Yale before because their tuition is the highest of all my choices but seriously considering it now... :nailbiting:

I reached out to a health policy student at Yale regarding their experiences at the school and one of the questions I asked was, "What do you wish you knew about the school before you enrolled?"

Her answer:

"Before I enrolled, there are a few things I wish I knew about the MPH and Yale in general. First being how math intensive the Yale program is. The Yale MPH definitely places an emphasis on quantitative research skills, specifically research composition and analysis through coding programs like SAS or Stata. I genuinely did not realize how much math I would be engaging in my first semester, but even as a not entirely math or coding-oriented person I found it to be extremely interesting and important."

I thought this was really helpful for me to know so I hope it's helpful for you all considering Yale Health Policy as well 🙂

Was accepted to UNC Health Behavior on Jan 26th (link via email). Best of luck!!!

Very interesting...I was worried about how there wasn't enough quantitative experience for Health Policy (because they switched my concentration from SBS to Health Policy in my acceptance letter). But glad that HP provides the opportunity to develop more hard skills which I like - but totally unexpected for health policy. This is making me consider Yale even more now. Thanks!

I submitted my app in back in September and have not heard back from UNC HB. I've been thinking about emailing them about progress since they're the only school I'm waiting on. I thought rolling admissions meant they decided once they got the app but I'm guessing not...

Just declined my seat at BU. Hopefully that helps someone on the waitlist and/or passes on my scholarship to someone else.
I see u were accepted into uwash....same here have u heard anything bout funding!!?

Wow thanks for that! If I decide to attend Yale for an MPH, I would prefer to stay at the same institution for a PhD program. To your knowledge - does the Yale PhD program give preference to Yale MPH students (only asking because I know they accept >45 students and the grading system is somewhat unconventional - it would be nice to have an upper hand in the application process). Also, what do you think of the prospects of getting an RA/TA position during the second year (or even second semester). I have very limited research experience and am primarily using my Masters to build up research skills to ultimately earn a PhD. I have heard from students at JHU that their MSPH sets them up with essential research skills but wanted to see if Yale was comparable in setting students up with quant. skills. And one last question! I was accepted into Yale's Health Policy program for some reason when I applied to their Social Behavior Sciences program -- I was wondering if it would be possible to switch concentrations (It's true that I have a lot of health policy experience which is why I was probably moved into that concentration but applied to SBS so that I could grow my research skills). Thanks for your help - very insightful!
The one issue with planning on staying at Yale for a PhD is that the PhD programs are incredibly small. For example, if I am remembering correctly, one of my professors told us that there were 80 something applicants for 2 open seats in the CDC PhD program this year. However, with that being said, I have had TFs (teaching fellows...just what Yale calls TAs) that have gone straight from the Yale MPH to the Yale PhD. I think Yale knows that their MPH grads have great training and they are strong applicants, but competition is tough since the programs are so small. Overall PhD acceptance rates from the Yale MPH are very very high!
You should have no problem getting an RA position. Students typically just reach out to faculty and they take them on if they have room on their research team. A good number of RA positions are paid, but sometimes you have to volunteer for the first semester. Additionally, Yale is affiliated with many research centers throughout it’s academic programs and outside agencies, and many YSPH students find research they are interested in both at YSPH and elsewhere with the help of Yale’s connections and network in the area. TF positions are also a definite possibility. You can TF for undergraduates during your first semester if you have some kind of experience in the topic, and there are options to TF in YSPH during your second year as an MPH student. Yale’s MPH in general is very research based and I strongly believe you will be able to build up your research and quant skills through your corsework and through research with faculty or other Yale affiliated research groups.

For your last question, I would reach out directly to Yale admissions. If they moved you from the department you selected, there may be a reason for that on the admissions end. Students do change concentrations here, but it must be done very early since you begin taking department specific courses during your first semester, and all changes must formally go through admissions (even after matriculation). Everyone in the admissions office is very nice, so I definitely recommend reaching out.

I hope this helps!

omg dying to hear back from Berkeley MPH biost/epi program! UGH i submitted on 12/7 but they emailed me later saying i need to re-send my fee waiver with a different documentation because they don't accept 2017 tax return, so i have a feeling that my application didn't start getting reviewed until 1/12

submitted: 12/7
application complete: 12/19
fee waiver re-submission: 1/3
fee waiver verified: 1/12

Are people still waiting to hear back from Columbia HPM?
Yes, I applied on January 15 and had my interview on January 26 and I've heard nothing at all. I called today and they said Admitted Students Day is today so call on Monday.

There is another admitted student day on Apr 6th. I am going to that one.

Pretty sure I was just rejected for the MSPH in International Health Systems from Johns Hopkins. Not too hung up about it as I knew it was a long shot but just to be sure, can anyone help clarify for me - my portal said: "Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to offer you admission to the program for Fall (August) 2018. Official notice of this decision will arrive by e-mail in the next 24-48 hours."

Just to double check - "at this time" doesn't mean waitlisted right? I'm assuming it's straight rejection. Thanks all and good luck to all other MSPH applicants!

I didn't apply to JHU but my UCLA rejection letter said something very similar, if not, the exact same thing. Sorry about JHU 🙁

dying to hear back from Harvard MPH in environmental health... I didn't expect I'd have to spend another weekend waiting in agony!

I submitted on Dec 1, 2017 and received admission on Jan 22, 2018. But I did not have an interview. Why was it required for you? I applied the 1-year HPM.

Yeah, it's borderline ridiculous not to get back to people earlier since we have to schedule revisit days/start evaluating our choices. But alas, nothing we can do about it.

I applied to the 2-year HPM. An interview was not required. I think the interview went well, that is why I am surprised that I haven't heard back.

Thanks a lot. That is cheering. But are you sure? Cause I saw on post on the other website said that one student got revoked for terrible GPA.
You can still have a salvageable GPA with Cs, I would say as long as your GPA is around a 3.0 your good. You might need a higher GRE though.

Hi guys!
I have applied to GWU, JHU and Dartmouth for part time MPH. I have been so far accepted to GWU and JHU, and I have an interview scheduled with Dartmouth! I was wondering if anyone ever got any $$$ from JHU? I am a lucky European and got my MD for free, so the thought of such a gigantic loan is frightening.

Hi guys,
This thread seems to have information on all the big names in public health. Top schools most of them. Any discussion for the middle tier. I have accepted MPH at Icahn school of Medicine at Mt Sinai for spring II session. Anyone here with me or with inside knowledge on this program. I would really love some information

Has anybody still waiting to hear from Harvard received an email this past Thursday sayin:
“As the Admissions Committee reviews degree applications, please note that the School also offers the Summer Session for PH studies. Summer Session affords students the opportunity to experience the classes and culture of the HSPH while also meeting and learning from leading professors and practitioners similarly dedicated to assisting others.

If you decide to apply for the Summer Session, you will need to apply via SOPHAS Express by March 5, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. PDT. You do not need to re-submit recommendations or official transcripts since you applied through SOPHAS for a degree program.

Applicants accepted into the MPH in Epidemiology, the Master’s in Health Care Management, the DrPH, and the MPH 65-credit program are not eligible to participate in Summer Session for Public Health Studies.”

I got this too but I think it's a generic email for all applicants? I applied to ScM-80 Epi

I was accepted into their Fall session; I'll be attending their admitted students day on March 23rd, and might be able to provide more information after then, if that helps? Congrats on your acceptance!

Hi all! Just declined my offers to Yale, Columbia and Upenn in case anyone is on the waitlist! Will be committing to Johns Hopkins!!! Thank you all for all the support - seriously couldn’t have made it through the cycle without everyone’s input and best of luck! Wishing everyone lots of success at whatever program you choose to attend 🙂

Has anyone heard from Columbia about financial aid?

Is anyone going to the NYU open house tomorrow? If so, could you post your impressions? Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it due to this awful weather on the east coast. Thanks so much!

I have a general question about financial aid offers. I am waiting back to hear from a couple of schools about financial aid. I have heard back from only one school about the award amount that they would offer me. My question is, do I contact the other schools I have not heard back from about this offer before or after they offer me their initial financial aid award? My concern would be if I tell them the amount I received from another school before they send their offer, they would only try to match that award when maybe before they would have offered more if they didn't know. (Hope my question makes sense!)

Columbia Admitted Students Day
For those who may be interested here are my paltry notes from Admit Day on Friday. I know there's another one in April so hopefully, others can fill in a few details. I have notes on the Population and Family Health breakout session, message me for details.
Career services
  • Lifetime free services
  • 1,150 alumni, more than 500 alumni-student matches per year
  • Reciprocity with other public health schools around the country (so if you move to CA you could use the services/platforms of a local school)
  • Individual appointments with career services offered
  • 88% employed in public health or healthcare within 6 months of graduation
  • 8% continuing studies after 6 months
  • 2% seeking employment
  • 2% not seeking
  • They have detailed data by department and certificate if you request it
Financial aid
  • They base need-based aid on whether three criteria: anticipated family contribution under $10,000 (the government makes this determination), whether you took out subsidized loans for undergrad, and whether you qualified for PELL Grants (or something similar) for undergrad
  • GRA and RA positions usually go to second year and doctoral students
Curriculum
  • Life course approach to prevention
  • Key features of our public health education: Comprehensive training, global focus, interdisciplinary (I missed a few)
  • Core: Faculty across school, mixed students from departments, 100 students per class
  • Integration of science and practice: 20 students in teams for one year, case study approach, applying Core
  • Leadership: 35 students randomly mixed from different departments, 7 weeks, once a week for 3 hours
  • Class sizes of 100 and 20 (cohort model) for Core and ISP
  • Other classes are smaller (I heard 20-60)
  • Certificates estimated to have 10-40 students
  • Cohort was said to be 400-600 students.

I don't think that ranking or big names are all that serious. I was accepted to a couple of highly ranked programs, but I am going to make my decisions based on financial aid, and the fit of the program. Mt Sinai is known to have late afternoon classes which allows students to work during the day. It is also a part of a large integrated health system with 7 hospitals across the city and a lot of well funded research institutions, and students have a lot of opportunity to get involved. They're also accredited, which is important as well. I think the program is also on the cheaper side but the trade off is the cost of living in nyc. Class sizes are much smaller so students get to connect with the faculty. A lot of they're faculty are also leaders in the industry and work directly in public health, which is something I like.
That's kind of what I gathered overall, but I'll be at the admitted students day to learn more!

Which track for the mph did you apply to?

Hi All,

Looking for some advice here. I applied late (verified 2/27) so I don't expect to hear back from schools soon, but I'm still trying to plan ahead in terms of living situations. I currently own a house in Berkley, MI (45 min - 1 hour away from U of M) and I rent it out. I applied to U of M and thought that if I got in, I could live at my house, get a roommate, and commute. That would keep my costs down because it would net out to roughly $200 a month for my "rent". I feel like the commute could wear down on me though. My current tenant's lease is up April 1st so I need to decide on if I want them to go month-to-month or sign another year lease.

*Assuming I get in and decide to go there* Do you all think it would be worth living that far from school in order to keep housing costs low? I'm not familiar with graduate class schedules, so does anyone know how much time I'd actually be spending at school? (ex. 3 days of classes/week or 5 days of classes/week)

I also currently work at a major consulting firm in health insurance. I was thinking about seeing if I could keep my job part time while in school to help pay for expenses. I'm able to work remotely. Do you all think that would be manageable while taking classes full time?

Trying to figure out the logistics of everything with so many unknowns is making me anxious, so any advice would be much appreciated! :nailbiting: Really kicking myself for deciding to apply so late in the game...

In at Columbia (SMS)! I heard back on Friday (3/2). For those that haven't heard back yet, stay encouraged. I presumed the late response meant a rejection. It looks like acceptances are still trickling in each week.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change your certificate/concentration at either Columbia or Hopkins? I am wondering if there is flexibility if I decide to commit to one of the schools. Thanks!
It's easy to change your certificate at Columbia. You will have a chance later in first year where faculty present each concentration and then make you decision. In other words, what you are admitted to currently is not set in stones.

However, for JHU, you would actually need to go through almost a similar application process as now to transfer to another concentration, which may possibly set you back in your time of graduate. This, I gathered from their website and they made it sounds quite difficult.
