Where all did you apply? Did you have all three letters of recommendation uploaded at the time?

I applied to SUNY at Buffalo, SUNY Stony Brook, NYU, and Columbia. And all my recommendations and transcripts are all in.

When did the last letter of Rec arrive? My account was verified end of October but my schools refused to look at my application until the third letter arrived last week.

That's so frustrating! I've heard Columbia likes to take their time but usually NYU is more prompt. At least no news is better than bad news?

I definitely agree with that, but the anxiety to find out is driving me crazy! Where did you apply?

Some of the schools you applied to may not have started reviewing as of yet, especially if they don't do rolling admissions. Columbia's early deadline is today, so they've probably just started reviewing applicants. Also, based on the previous threads, they seem to notify applicants sometime in late January/early February and then March.

I thought so too. But I could have sworn some people began hearing decisions back from NYU and I got worried.

Checked the thread--I don't think anyone heard back from NYU, including me! I just got one of those "we received your app" emails. Also, if you have any questions about SBU, lmk! That's my alma mater 🙂

Okay haha probably mistook something. And I definitely will 🙂 do you think calling and asking them about their typical decisions period is a good idea? NYU is honestly my #1 choice rn.

It doesn't hurt to let them know you're interested, especially since this may be the first time you call. Also, since you're local, consider going to an informational session! For another school, based on what current students told me, it seems to be a pretty smart move to show them you're very interested. They also take attendance of those who actually came (at least for the school I visited).

Probably will be like my 4th time calling tbh but I’ll put what they tell me up here. Thanks for the advice 🙂

Quick question for JHU- on your SOPHAS did you put Summer (July) 2018?

Yes, it looks like on SOPHAS the Full Time/On-Campus option shows up as Summer 2. The application portal said classes start July 2, 2018.

I am afraid I am cutting it really close with my applications as I had planned to have them all finished by 12/15, but see that so many of you have already submitted and received acceptances. I think that my stats are pretty good (3.5 GPA, V165 Q153 and have been in contact with my top two choices' admissions offices), would being on the later end of applications affect my chances of getting in, or just scholarship odds? TBH I am not expecting scholarships no matter what as I do not think I am competitive enough for them.

If anyone can quell my fears it would be very appreciated! I would hate for my anxieties about my making my personal statement perfect affect any potential acceptances.

For anyone else that applied to NYU, they should be starting giving decisions around the end of this month but more so early/mid January.

Hey! You’ve got a lot of really good experieince! I would highly encourage utilizing those in your personal statement and interviews. You’ve got a lot of really good schools listed there! I would also include UCLA, UCI, and UCSD, especially if you’re ok going to Southern California. UCLA in particular has a very strong public health program.

If you are applying through SOPHAS 12/15 should be fine! I applied around 12/30 last year to a mix of MPH and MHA programs and received positive news from almost all of them. Scholarship odds may be slightly reduced, but I think you’ll be ok—I definitely received scholarship offers from multiple programs even if I applied late. I am strong proponent of making sure to really speak to your experience and why you would be a good fit! I’m sure you’ll do great 🙂

Hi Everyone! NYU just emailed saying that my application has been sent in for review 🙂 has anyone already heard back from them? If so, how long did it take them to review your app?

Hi and thanks for your encouragement! Did the schools you applied to have a deadline before 12/30?

Hey! I got the same thing too a while back. I called admissions today and they said that decisions (at least for me who submitted 9/29 and verified around 10/6) should be out end of this month into early/mid- January. I could imagine yours to be somewhere around that time frame. But I would call admissions to be sure.

Hi and thanks for your encouragement! Did the schools you applied to have a deadline before 12/30?

A lot of the schools, if not all of them, had priority deadlines on 12/1 and 12/15. Since they all had rolling admissions, I was still able to submit my stuff at a later time. You do give yourself the best chance if you submit earlier, but it isn’t the end of the world if you don’t!

I know I'm way behind most of you, but I'm just completing my Experiences section in advance of starting to submit today. My question is about providing contact information in the Supervisor section. I did ask a supervisor at my current job for an LOR, but it was not my direct manager - I've been keeping my application very quiet because even if I get in, matriculation wouldn't be until August of next year; I'd have another good six months of work and I don't yet want people to see me as leaving or gone.

My question is, do you think it's false or misleading to put my LOR-writer's information as my supervisor, or should I just fess up to Boss man and put his contact info down?

I was in a similar position to you when I was applying! While I’m unsure on what your company’s culture is like, in my experience, my supervisors were very excited about me applying to graduate school, and my boss would check in with me from time to time about my progress.

I do not think it would be misleading to include your LOR-writer’s information down, but I don’t think it would be too detrimental to leave your direct manager’s information either. In general, I don’t think that many universities contact your experience references at all!

Don't worry! All schools have different timelines. Some schools start reviewing and sending out decisions as soon as applications start coming in. Others do not begin releasing decisions until a certain date or until they reach a certain number of acceptances. Some schools roll out decisions to individual applicants, some send out acceptances in waves, and others release the majority of decisions all on one day. In many of these circumstances, the date of verification and submission won't change the date you receive a decision. It all comes down to the individual school. Last year, I heard back from some schools just weeks after applying and others months later. They will come in before you know it!

Since I see you applied to Columbia, I'll give you a heads up that last year, they sent out the majority of their acceptances all together so everyone who applied within their deadlines heard back around the same time. Last year, I was notified of my acceptance on February 8th. I don't have experience with the other programs you applied to, but I wouldn't worry. Good luck!!

Ah, thanks! I think my boss would honestly say "good for you!" if I told him my plans - people around here are very supportive! It really is more the thing where I don't want to be seen as temporary just yet, especially since we're a little short staffed at the moment for various reasons. But you've given me something to think about - thank you so much for the advice!

And isn't it so true? It's so easy to get in our heads about these things when it probably doesn't matter a bit. A little perspective is good sometimes.

No problem! Honestly, I completely understand. It’s so easy to get caught up in the details when something is important to you. Good luck with applications!

Hi! You are the only other person I have seen that has applied to Tulane's Tropical Medicine program. It's one of my top choices and I'm going a little crazy waiting to hear about a decision. I am curious how long it took to receive your acceptance after your application was verified? It seems that some of Tulane's departments get answers back in a matter of two days, while other departments take three weeks. Since no one else has mentioned tropical medicine, I have no idea what to expect. THANKS!
Tulane was the first school I heard back from! I submitted on 9/15 and was accepted on 10/13. Good luck!

Once submitted around this time, how long do programs usually take to get back to students? Particularly interested in Harvard, UMich, and UCLA?
Not sure about UMich, but UCLA and Harvard release decisions starting in Feb.

Hey does jhu, harvard and usc consider Gpa more than gre as my Gpa is low 3.01 and gre is high 324 and multiple experience in clinic and hospital will my Gpa affect my admission?

Not sure about UCLA, but Harvard releases its decisions in Feb (according to previous years' MPH threads).

As for UMich, it seems that it's very much program-dependent... looks like some folks here have already heard back from Epi!

Hi all!

Current 1st year Columbia student here, just dropping in to say hi! I'm about half-way through the first semester of the CORE, and it's crazy to think that I was submitting apps just a year ago! I'm an Epi student with a certificate in Applied Biostats, and I am absolutely in love with the program here! I had such a hard time deciding between here, Hopkins, and Yale, but I could not have asked for a better academic program here at Mailman.

If anyone wants to know more info about the CORE curriculum, (which is so different than any other SPH's), Mailman in general, or anything else, let me know!

My stats are all on last year's thread as well.

Happy app season, and best of luck!

hey there- can accelerated mph students take certificates at Mailman? Thanks a ton!
