MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To be honest. I would just ignore the people who got accepted and would read others that have questions or concerns about getting accepted. Questions after being accepted is growing lol i have many as well

HELP! lol

Hey guys,

I was wondering how late it is getting at this point in the cycle for MSU? I ask because my second letter writer (my pre-med adviser) thought that it would be better for me to at least shadow a DO once before she writes the letter. She feels that waiting a few weeks would be worth it if she can mention that my knowledge of the DO profession is backed up by shadowing. However, I know that MSUCOM only accepts students until about December so I did not want to risk being too late.

So basically my question is this: Is waiting 2 more weeks for submitting all of my materials worth it if I can add DO shadowing (even if it may be just once or twice?) This would make me complete around late October which is very close to December. Just how important is it for MSUCOM that you shadow a DO? I have seen many people on this thread saying they were accepted w/o DO shadowing so it made me wonder.

-I have a 3.62 cGPA and 3.48 sGPA with a 34 MCAT (14p 9v 11b).
-I have done a post-bacc with 20 credits of 4.0.
-I have about 400 hours of volunteering
-I have over 2000 hours of clinical experience (where I scribed for a physician, trained as EMT, volunteered at the hospital).
-Various other ECs like president of club for years, sports, etc.

Thanks in advance guys!

Hi Guys,

My file was complete on October 3rd. I submitted my references and secondary in the second week of September but my MCAT score was just released last week, so I sent it to them as soon as I received it. I was just wondering as a Canadian applicant if stood a chance to get accepted with my stats.

My starts are as follows:

(4th year undergraduate student)

cGPA: 3.6
sGPA: 3.58
MCAT: 26Q
volunteer hours: 1350
extra-curricular: 1850
8 months of research experience in natural health product development

I know I'll find out one way or another but I just don't want to get my hopes up.🙁

I'd say very good chances it's still not that late in the cycle. Good luck!

Hey guys I have a quick question. I sent in my secondary via overnight USPS and its been a week and still not showing on their website. One letter is in and they overnighted a few days after I sent mine in. Should I resend or does it take awhile for it to show. Thanks

Anyone else hoping for an email this Wednesday?

Call them and be polite lol

I'd try email. They replied mine in a very timely manner (emailed them at night and received reply early next morning). Usually you'll get the "our office is short-staffed and we're processing all the files ASAP" but then you'll find your files updated shortly after.

Just got verified today. I know I'm rather late with my application, but do I still have a shot here? I'm IS with a 3.67 and 30P.

You have good stats and are IS so yes potentially. However, it'll probably be another 2 weeks until you get your secondary (I know it takes them a bit to send them out). I'd make sure to have everything ready to go and send in so you can get it in as soon as possible. Good luck! 👍

Thanks for the advice DrMeows! I skimmed through a few of the pages in this thread and couldn't find the essay prompts and other materials needed for the secondary application. Anyone care to share? 🙂

Describe a personalexperience or ethical challenge you have faced that has influenced thedevelopment of your character. How has this experience helped you to developskills and/or abilities that are essential to practicing osteopathic medicine?

^ that is the only secondary essay. i believe you're supposed to keep it to a maximum of one page typed 👍

Has anyone received the official admission offer in the mail yet???

Being someone who has gone through your pre-clinical years there already, do you think having less time off/more time in the classroom compared to other schools was beneficial? Do u think its more information than other schools or the information is just more spread out? (Idk if u can actually answer that last question since u don't go to other schools lol, but asking just in case!). Do u think the way those 2 years are set up is an effective set-up for the students to prepare effectively? Thanks for your insight 🙂

In my subjective opinion, we learn a lot more clinical based information. It shows when our students are on rotation with other schools.

Unfortunately, the current curriculum is lacking in step1 prep. Which depending on the specialty you're interested in, is arguably the most thing you'll do during all of med school. I scored well on step 1 however I had to put in a huge amount of independent studying throughout 2nd year.

I am very nervous about tomorrow...hoping to hear something :xf:

Rooting for you too DrMeows🙂

Good luck and I am hoping too. What time of day do emails usually go out?

LOL, good idea. Unfortunately, my phone alerts me every time I get an email. Stupid advertisements going to my inbox are driving me crazy.

Thanks for the info! Yeah it's interesting to see how different schools handle step 1 prep. Does MSUCOM normally do above national average do you know? (I'm going to assume yes but I don't have actual verified information, just speculation lol)

I just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck today. I am so excited to meet you all and finally become a Spartan! MSUCOM sounds like such an amazing school; I haven't heard a single negative thing about it.

May the medical school gods be on your side today!

Ditto to everything AspiringDO1 said!!!

I think most people last week posted after 1pm so I'm going to try to wait until 2pm before I feel bummed that I have to wait another week.

Maybe, I'll step away from the computer and when I come back in an hour all three of us can post our awesome news.

hmm...... wonder if saying that really works?

I think it's safe to say it's a dead week 🙁

I checked out the website and the OMED conference is going on Oct. 7-11, in San Diego. Perhaps they are all attending. I know I'd be in San Diego right now if I could be. 🙂
