MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dammit Well that just sucks for us Canadians..I soo regret not applying earlier.. 🙁.. I already there atleast 5 of us on here that have been waitlisted, so Im guessing there are a couple more out there..

SO do we need to respond to that email though? it tells you your three options but there isnt like a website where you can indicate what you want to do next. Or do we just reply to that email and let them know? or do we just not respond??

I'm sure not every Canadian with an acceptance is going so I still think you guys have a good chance. MSU will definitely send out Canadian acceptances this month if people haven't paid their deposit. Then there are Canadians that may have gotten accepted to another MD or DO school they prefer. Then there are those who are also on the waitlist but may not attend (ie my roommate). I have a feeling it'll move. 👍

Thank you for the encouraging words and positive attitude. I really needed that lol.
Yup so i guess I well keep my fingers crossed!

Hey guys sorry for asking this a third time but no one answered my question. Do we need to respond to the waitlist email? or do they automatically assume we are interested in staying on it unless we specify other wise?
Thanks!

I was under the impression that if you want to stay on the waitlist, you sign the statement of technical skills or whatever, and then send it back to them?

Umm what do you mean by statement of technical skills? is that the email they send us with the 3 options of visiting the campus, not visiting, or removing ourselves from the waitlist?
So were suppose to check off "no I do not need to visit the campus" and mail it to them?

For those admitted, I got the site placement email today. Sooner than they mentioned, which was January. good luck to everyone

I also received my site confirmation today! I was placed at the site I picked as my first choice (East Lansing). Best of luck to everyone!!

I was just accepted today!! Have faith, they are still giving out acceptances 😀

Congrats!! 👍 Outright accepted or off of the waitlist? Mind sharing stats and complete date 🙂

Accepted! Not off the waitlist. I haven't heard a peep from the, until today. I thought they weren't going to look at my application because I don't have the best stats.

24 MCAT
3.45 sGPA
3.66 cGPA
A ton of volunteer/working/extracurricular hours.

I was complete in the middle of August.
Good luck to all of you still waiting 🙂

Does anyone know how many weeks are given for board prep?

Does anyone know how many weeks are given for board prep?

Hopefully one of the M1s can answer this because I know part of their curriculum change was done to give them more prep time (or so I've been told...)

I got my acceptance email yesterday on the 11th!

Very excited and just caught up on SDN after not being here for awhile.

IS
Complete as of 8/15/12
Paid Work Experiences: between 1800-1900 hrs
Volunteer Experiences: over 550 hrs less than 600
ECs: btwn 1200 and 1300 hrs
MCAT: 25
I had a terrible undergrad sGPA but my grad sGPA is btwn 3.3-3.4
Non-traditional applicant

I do have question about pre-reqs. I have one to take next semester and was wondering if I could just take it at the local community college or should I sign up at a near-by university?

Thanks! Good luck to those still waiting and congratulations to those with acceptances!

DOtobe23 and prettyinpurple congratulations! 🙂

You can take them at a community college, I am doing the same thing. I emailed admissions and they said as long as it is from any two or four year school and their accrediting agency is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. You can also take them online if they're not at your home university. Makes it alot easier!

Congrats! Not implying your app is bad lol because it's not, but do you think there's anything about your app that made you stand out? I'm a fellow instater complete in July with no word since then 🙁

The Tuesday acceptances are awesome but it makes me wonder if they will be meeting today. Hmm?

got email at 10:37 today, freakin, couldn't believe it so called if they didn't make any mistake...i'll be a doctor lol

Emailed today at 10:30am (MSUCOM time)
Wait Listed.
Stats:
MCAT 24O
cGPA 3.7
sGPA 3.6
Biochemistry and Biology Double Major
Lots of research experience
Lots of EC's (not necessarily the most unique, just a lot of them and a lot of time dedicated to them!)
Great LOR's
In-State, although attending an out-of-state undergrad institution
I have other offers, but I'm holding out for MSUCOM, it is definitely my first choice. ( For one, its a phenomenal school!... and home is only 45minutes away with bored, empty-nester parents = all my laundry done and meals made for another 4 years! lol)

I forgot to mention, I was complete as of 11-08

Congrats ochos & DOtobe23! You two give me hope since I wasn't completed until 11/19.

Thanks everyone! Congratulations to ochos!

I'm not offended at all...I feel your pain. Umm, I don't know exactly what would make me stand out. My MCAT was a lot lower than I was striving for but what's done is done. Like I said, I'm a non-trad applicant. I applied previously in 2010 and since then I went and got a master's degree. I am bilingual(Spanish speaker) and have decent depth and breadth in my work, volunteer, and shadowing experiences. I do know that my letters of rec were pretty awesome for MSU! I lucked out that my advisor/prof of two grad courses used to teach at a DO school in Texas and really knows how to frame me in the best light possible. I also discussed how to focus my essay with a recent COM grad & he gave me some pointers. Sorry this wasn't very helpful but wishing you the best in this cycle!

Wonderful news! Thanks 🙂 Being able to take this course at the community college will be so much easier with what not having to commute and plus the price can't be beat. Gotta keep saving for deposits and housing lol.

Thanks again! Best Christmas present ever 🙂

I hope that the Adcom here sees something that stands out in your application. I feel like it's a bit hard to determine myself what will and won't catch their eyes.

I wonder if they will meet tomorrow or if they are already on winter break. I'm in Michigan and I kind of wanted to go visit the Lansing campus while I was in town. I only checked out the Detroit campus last time I was in town.

Technically the campus is only closed on the 24-25 & Jan 31-1. But I know most faculty members take off at least after 4 PM today, (which is when all grades are due). So I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't meet this week or next.

This is all coming from a current UG and Full time staff @ MSU.

That's good to know. My UG school finished class last week and the teachers had to input grades by midnight yesterday. I know a few of my teachers will be taking at least this week off.

For those of you who received offers last week, what was the deadline for accepting?

to pay first payment 750$ until January 31st, so technically everything turned in by that date
to pay in full by the February 28

Does everyone get either waitlisted or accepted? Haven't heard anything about denials...

And is everything via email? The waiting game is brutal!

Seems like it is only acceptance and waitlist for now. Personally I would love to just know already. I've been complete for FIVE months! 😡 makes you wonder if they looked at your file and just didn't make a decision. And yep everything is through email.

My buddy was pulled off the waitlist today (or he seen the email today).
I believe he was complete mid-September, waitlisted beginning October.
Canadian, 3.96, 30P
G'luck fellow Canadians

That's awesome news for Canadians. Perhaps a couple of you other Canadians will get good news.

That is amazing news!! I was afraid the Canadian wait list would not move much if at all (after may 15) but its great to hear that it is moving! I was thinking about sending in a letter of interest with an academic update for this semester. Any thoughts?

I believe we'll get something like 2 months to prep for Step 1.

Congratulations to everyone that has been accepted and stay faithful to those that are still waiting. People have been accepted close to orientation before.

3.96 GPA and a 30mcat, yikes, no love from Canadian schools?

I would guess that it is an unbalanced 30? Canadian schools love the VR section for some reason and most of them put much more emphasis on VR then the rest. ( Ive actually heard of some one getting in with a 22 at U of C because their VR was 11).
