Hi everyone whose appearing for the nbde part 1 for jan or feb (or anytime early next year).. Im starting this thread so that we can all motivate each other, and keep each other updated on our progress. so that we dont get lazy, but rather stick to schedule and stay focussed.

**Please dont ask for books, or material or study partners in this thread.

Lets keep it solely for
1. Motivating each other
2. Sharing any mistakes or tips to study better
3. Asking questions during preparation
4. Anything you wish to share with others while you are studying
5. Review or questions regarding books, decks, tests that you are using during this study period

Thanks, and i wish good luck to my fellow test takers 🙂

I have searched a lot about that and found out that the pass/fail system would start since jan 2012.I also found out that universities may change they application requirement since 2012 if the NBDE scoring be changed.I heard from a friend of mine who is now a student of UCLA that it is possible that schools take their own exams but he wasn't sure about that.In my view if the system be changed, then it would have effect on every thing.because of a medical problem,I couldn't prepare for nbde until now.I bought all of the text books and going to prepare for the exam.certainly I would take this year but I don't know what happens if I apply in 2012.

thanks for the input...all the best to u!!!

is histidine essential or non essential in adults??

Hey zappy..about the histidine from the USMLE videos it says that histidin and arginine are essential for the child but not for the adult..arginine required during the periods of positive nitrogen balance.

Hey guys I have many questions to ask..

-why removal of anterior pituitary increase sensitivity to insulin?
-increase in basic amino acids (arginin and lysin)stimulate glucagon and insulin secretion?! this is from USMLE physio..the decks states that decrease plasma basic amino acids promotes glucagon secretion??
I hate these paradoxical information it is so confusing.
it i more reasonable for insulin to increase with increasing level of amino acids cause it enhances protein synthesis..but for glucagon I am confused.

-why lactic aciddehydrogenas increase in myocardial infarction??

1.LDH isozyme-1 is present in the cardiac muscle...which usually increases whenever there is a tissue injury in the heart...releasing LDH-1 in the blood...therefore the rise.
2.For pituatary and insulin sensitivity refer this link🙁go to discussion)

hope that helps.👍

Most susceptible sites in nervous system for the effects of acute ischemic anoxia
motor end plates
sensory receptors
synapses on autonomic ganglia
synapses in central nervous system

this question is in sample prometric test.. and i cudnt even answer this 🙁
regarding this question, don't panic i knew the answer from the choices.
think with me, we all know that motor end plate (sk. muscle), and sensory receptor is outside the CNS. so choices 1 ands 2 are out.
in addition the most common a of stroke is the middle creberal, specifically the lenticulostiate a, which pass through the basal ganglion which is a motor synapse inside the CNS.

So, Now you know the answer?

Hey thanks haam that was really helpful ... how are last days treating you???

Stimuli for increasing the rate of thyroid stimulating hormone secretion???
heat/cold/stress???
acc to decks..its cold.sm other book says its both cold n stress😕

cold n stress ,both would cause an increase in TSH...but in comparison to stress cold causes a higher secretion of TSH...

was reading some article ...will post if i get more info on this...🙂

Hello everybody , i am new here and i have one question.
Can you, please tell me do you study just question and answer from the decks or you study everything that is on the back side of the deck? thanks

BTW i am taking my exam in march in NY anybody this month and location?

aurite... i think its liver.. read it somewhere ... next one is ... i wont be knowing the answers of these questions ..so they are open for discussion.. i do have ideas , but wanna be sure... i read these questions in some "prep for PG book"...
what is most commonly mistaken as subgingival calculus ?
dens in dente , concrescence.. or anything ... ???

Occasionally, the enamel pearl may be mistaken for calculus during a clinical exam.

here i am being human. don't worry i was gonna post ASAP😀

I did my exam in feb 10th . to start with IT WAS EASY. The exam is easy. Don’t worry at all. You’ll do great I assure you and you will remember all my words.

First of all, at the night before the exam sleep well and eat your breakfast and drink your coffee. It is a pretty long exam and you will feel so hungry in the middle of the exam. Don’t depend too much on the 1 hour break, as I did, it will finish so quickly and I don’t know why???

Secondly, as I said the exam was easy, there are little, and only little, that were confusing or difficult but most of the questions are easy and spotted directly.
At the last week, read your notes over and over and do the ASDA again and again. There are repeated questions but not that much. Keep the difficult decks aside so you could get back to it ASAP. My only advise if you finished studying is revision never attempt to study anything new especially in the last few weeks.

I know that last days are extremely difficult but you have to hang on, these are the last days of your hard working. Try to be clever in your answer choices, never rush, and stick to the basic. It all rotates around the basic, know the physiology pretty well, DA is a very important topic. Never leave a subject left unstudied in the outline as much as you can because the questions distribution is not as mentioned in the outline so please watch out.

This is what is on my mind right now. If I remember any thing I’ll write down.
Good luck to all of you and please pray for me to have a great score, which I wish to have.

dear being human, the big thanx to all of you. we are here to help each other.
regarding your concern, relax the immuno part was easy , most of the questions are stright forward. i didn't study the immuno from kaplan instead i read the microbiology recall book which has 5 chapters for immuno. kaplan is too much and most of the questions were superfecial not deep.
Hint: memorize all the type of interleuckin actions it is important.👍

regarding the lower limb, i wasted almost 2 to 3 days reading the lower limb and no questions i could find in the exam for the lower limb. unlike the upper limb which is important not only the arm also the forarm. and for the neuro read the important nucleous such as the Trigminal and facial. all the questions are in concerned with these two.

as i said the main problem with the exam is that some parts are not included exactly as they posted in ada.
Hint: if you have time read Forensic dentistry.😕

lastly, for the DA, i do recommend that you read whatever source you have IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.

thanks for sharing ur exp Haam...All the best !!! and pls tell me this too where did u do DH from?????
sorry but if by DH you mean dental anatomy, this is my answer😀

i read the dental anatomy from decks, kaplan and my dearest friend Wiki, god bless him!!!😱
i went to the exam fearing of the dental anatomy but it appears that i studied pretty well. the questions in DA isn't stright forward you must know the occlusion good , the boarder movement, shape of all teeth, the
characteristic features of individual tooth. in the middle of the exam i wished to expand my knoledge in DA just to feel comfort when i choose the answer. but thanx god most of my selections were right.

dear being human , i'm here to help.👍
regarding the neuro anatomy it was a shock for me. i read decks , kaplan and snell. but most of the questions are stright forward. on the other hand, neuro physiology was a bit difficult , not too much. so my advice if you have enough time read neuro anatomy from kaplan and neurophysiology from the book or physiology recall.
the neuro physiology from kaplan is not that good.

you will have questions releated to peri/ endo but all correlated to the basic so don't panic.

my only advice is stay calm and never panic, you will need your brain with you, not all the questions are stright forward and need a little thinking. so again, eat your breakfast and drink your coffee and go there as calm as possible and you'll do fine.

hint: don't forget to take your own notes and revise it before the exam. and fantastic memorizing tips that i gave you their links.👍

good luck to all of you, and i'm here to help anyone.
PLZ PRAY FOR MY MARKS, i wanna place the dancing banana once in my life😀

Hi haam,

thanx for all that information...it really calmed my nerves about neuro anat but still kaplan is like so much but still better to do more than less...now got to think where to study neuro physio from..by kaplan do u mean the review or the notes.....well i guess wiki would be best in addition with kaplan review for basics coz i didnt find much in kaplan notes about neuro phys...
by the way u are surely gonna do u r banana dance and i am also gonna do it for u when u get ur admission for sure...we all surely will get thru this phase with flying colors and who knows we can be going to the same college...so gudluck and hope for the best👍 will surely pray for u...

Hey Nikhil, i'm anaita... just happened to read this thread and followed up those acland anat videos... they are really good.. thanx

hey....i m also preparing nbde part1, planning to give exam by feb march.....from where nd how to get acland anat videos.....plz suggest

thanks Haam.....but i really meant Dental Histology...😀 !!!!!!!1Dental Anat is sooo imp ....!!!! and did u get a whole lot of Histology questions in ANAT SCI????

sorry but my mind is blocked:laugh:

regarding the DH😱, i read the decks, kaplan and ten cate book. ten cate is a good source but not that i like too much because it is not organized. my advice, read the salivary gland histology, embryology, and anatomy very carefully. according to my humble experience it is the most important topics in the histology and anatomy. know the type of secretion, the flow rate and the names of the duct are extremely important.👍

for the embryology of the teeth, i had not experience any time questions but memorize it as it might be asked by them.
and for the histology of teeth , know the important features of enamel, dentin, cementum and PDL. it is of extreme importance. so watch out.👍

one of the unexpected events that happend to me during the exam is that questions are mixed, so you'll not find the anatomy questions alone. it is all mixed up to mix up our rusty brain:laugh:

there are only 200 questions from the N series.

for me i read the old papers all of them and evaluate myelf in each division from 100, and for the N series from the whole 200. try to solve all of them and know why is it this answer. there are about 30 questions from old papers, but as everyone says don't take it for granted.

the prime goal in my opinion in the last weeks is revision and revision and revision. i suggest that you don't read anything new to your brain. JUST REVISE.👍

thank you so much being human for all these nice words.
by kaplan i mean the notes not the review. there is a recall book for physio, but i didn't use it. i read the notes of my school.
being human listen to me, STICK TO THE BASIC. don't roam around details you'll lose your informations easily just know the basic so you can conclude the answer by yourself.
for the neuro physiology, now the conduction of the nerve it is of prime importance.👍

by the way to all of you, what works for me is just for me so it might not work with you too. know your goal , plan for it and then act the way you feel comfort. i spent alot reading basics and revising day and night for each topic before i start the new one because i know my self that i forget so quickly but in the last days i just passed through the important informations which i revised almost 4 times in the end.
GOOD LUCK

Hi haam,
thanx for all that info....i surely got it by what u mean about sticking to the basics...i think each exam of asda emphasizes that fact even more and we roam about going into the details forgetting the basics...anyway gudluck for ur score and thanx for everything....:xf:👍

Hi all,
I have been reading these posts and they helped me a lot with exams. Thanks to everyone.
Gave my exam last week and thought I would share my experience.
So, to begin with... the exam was EASY.About 60-65% questions were basic level direct questions which could be answered easily . Very few questions were indirect and confusing and few of the questions were direct, but answer choices were confusing.
There is no shortcut to ace this exam. I did not find NBDE first aid very useful as they have so many errors and the book is full of buzz words. Its of no use. Utilize time understanding the topic as few questions need you to think.
Not many repetitions at all. The ones that were ,were all basic to mid basic level. That was disappointing.
Questions from tough topics like neuroanatomy and neurophisio were a joke. I could have answered them with my memory from BDS!Just 2-3 questions.
Had vague questions from liver, pancreas and lower limb.
Still,I would say it was not bad at all.Kaplan Q bank helped me a bit.
Materials I followed...Decks,Kaplan review notes and Q bank( Especially micro and physio),USMLE for some topics, ASDA papers (all the years),Wiki.
When you are just 2-3 wks shy of giving your exam, don'y waste time looking for remembered questions or looking for answers for weird questions. Total waste of time. There are not many repetitions at all .
I have noticed, questions from topics vary on each exam and can't really predict a pattern.
Stay calm and good luck to all.
