New Jersey Schools Part II

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Called NJMS on monay. They made cuts on the alternate list. So if you havnt gotten a rejection letter yet from them, you're still on it. Of course that doesn't mean much since they don't expect anybody to be taken off the alternate list this year. 🙁

hey guys..
any idea how competitive it is getting into the jersey schools?? i hear there are about 1500 applicants from jersey each year (not sure how many of them go to jersey schools though)... a heck of a lot from such a small state.

New Jersey is actually a big state. 11th in population with around 8.5 million residents.

"NJMS anticipates over 5,000 applications for 170 places available in the Class of 2012." -NJMS admissions site."

"RWJMS welcomed 156 students in the entering class of 2007 out of 3,551 applicants, which is 12% more applications received than the previous year and significantly above the national increase in applications of 2.3%" -RWJ Admissions site

They don't break down applicants by state, but I think it would be safe to assume more than 1500 NJ residents apply to the NJ schools each year.

You can schedule interviews at any of the three campuses. There is no orientation at Camden so they do recommend you visit the other two even if you choose to interview at camden.
I also like RWJ because of the camden option. Are you from South Jersey?

i actually never saw camden until my first day as a third-year. i was a late switch (feb of my second year) and it was just about the best decision i've made in the last five years. if anyone wants to check out camden, just call the admin office. one of us is always happy to show students around (mostly because we all love it here and like to spread the word).

yeah, i'm a fourth-year now and i've never heard anyone badmouth njms. or really mention the school at all other than to say they know someone there.

Any of you guys interviewing or interviewed at NJMS or RWJMS recently ?.

I interviewed at NJMS on 9/22 and was accepted on 10/30. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

In general, it's pretty easy to get in (by med school standards)--as long as you're from NJ. OOS students get the shaft, especially at NJMS.

These #s are from US News: RWJ: 1211 IS apps, 289 accepted (24%); 2340 OOS apps, 65 accepted (4%). NJMS (no "accepted" #s, but extrapolated from RWJ's accepted/matriculated ratios): 1210 IS apps, estimate 333 accepted (27%); 3470 OOS apps, est. 41 accepted (1%).

I'm OOS (DC). Guess I'll be one of the only non-NJ students at NJMS...

I interviewed at NJMS in late september and have not heard back. Being realistic, I have way above average stats for them and am in-state but had a really bad interviewer. I'm thinking he shafted me in his interview report. Ass. Oh well screw NJMS

Your frustration is understandable, but assuming you didn't get in because you had a bad interview and you haven't heard back yet is premature at this point. If you look at the acceptance thread, they're calling applicants who interviewed in late September. FYI, I thought I had a "bad" interview as well, but I think that's their intent. Be patient...
