New York COM (NYIT-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

Hello Jay,

I just had my interview about a week ago. I was in the morning session so right around 8:00am, a faculty member approached our group and called a name, bringing one candidate back. There wasn't any sort of prep for the day. The interviews are one-on-one and last between 15-20 minutes-ish. I guess each interviewer is different. My interviewer (a lady) was quite vague and just asked me to expand on my application. Every question was essentially, "Can you tell me more about, *this*." The other interviewer apparently just went through a checklist of questions without any small talk, but the candidates all said he was very relaxed.

If you happen to get the same lady that interviewed me, definitely be ready to defend OMM and how it can be incorporated into your preferred field of medicine. Advocate for OMM. It wasn't that bad! Just relax. 🙂
Thank you so much for your input!

Does anyone know the actual address of the school, because I feel like the address given in my invite is wrong

I mentioned this previously in the thread " DO NOT USE THEIR GPS ADDRESS!!! I dont know if anyone else had that problem and the people at admissions office looked at me like i was the first one with this problem BUT there is a problem. If you use google maps, go the to address that comes up for NYIT/NYCOM in old westbury. Their GPS address got me relatively close but still 15 min away by car! You can google their GPS address and see how far it is from when you google NYIT/NYCOM in old westbury just to be safe." I used the GPS app on my phone and just wrote the name of the school. Good LUCK! Hope this helps.

Got an II today, will be withdrawing. Good luck to everyone else applying.
AACOMAS stats (because someone usually asks anyway): cGPA 3.5, sGPA 3.41, MCAT 35

agreed, I was a few minutes late (didn't really matter) because of this issue...not sure why they are still giving out this address!

Good to know that I am not the only one that had that problem lol. They still give it out because apparently when THEY plug that address into a GPS or google or w.e. else they use, it shows them the entrance to the campus. Now I don't know what they plug it into but I plugged it into a GPS, a GPS app on my phone, and google , and it does not take me to the actual school. The whole thing is just weird especially that they were surprised that I couldn't find it for a really long time. Oh well..

For those who just had their interview, did the school mention anything about switching their entire curriculum to PBL next year? I just read a thread on the pre osteo forum stating that the school is doing this and they're starting with the class of 2018. Don't know how much truth there is to this......

I interviewed in november and they didn't mention anything about that. They said if you want PBL you would have to apply for it.

Yea I had my interview on Dec and they made no mention of that also, but I think someone mentioned that they just made this change last week. Again, I'm not sure how much truth there is to this.

I had my interview in Nov and they did not mention it at my interview as well. It would be very unfair for them to make these changes without letting everyone know. I hope this isn't true.

For those who had there interview last week or those who had it yesterday or today, could you let us know what they said about the curriculum during the info session? Did they mention at all about the entire curriculum being PBL? Thanks!

Honestly the best way to get to the bottom of this possible conversion to a purely PBL based curriculum is to call the admissions office or send them an email. Mention that there is a rumor going around that the school plans to do away with their lecture based curriculum and switch to PBL, and ask them if there is any truth to this or if it is just a bunch of gunners trying to scare applicants away from a school that they may have their sights set on.

There is a lot of bickering going on in this thread and the other "thoughts about NYCOM" thread, the best way to get an answer is to call or email the admissions office.

has anyone been accepted under the condition that they complete the medprep program? anyone know about this?

As of a week ago when I interviewed, their DPC program was restricted to appx 36 students and everything else was lecture-based.

And if that doesn't satisfy you, then krarndt is right and you should call the admissions office.

interviewing here mid february. not too late considering they don't start interviewing until november and that they have a class of > 300?

Hey, if you don't mind, can you provide a link to the "thoughts about NYCOM" thread. I can't seem to find it and wouldn't mind reading it. Thanks!

I interviewed this past Tuesday, and although they did not mention the new curriculum during the main session (they spent most of the time talking about their 36-student PBL program), my interviewer shed some light on it.

He said this was all still in the works, but they are planning for lecture hours to be reduced. Some of the reduced time will then be used for groups of roughly 18 students to meet up and discuss cases with a moderator, similar to the PBL. However, due to the fact that they are accredited under a specific curriculum, they can't just change the entire system that quickly. Thus, it seems like you'd have maybe 1 or 2 of these group meetings a week, from what he said, in addition to lecture (which will be reduced compared to now). He also said that they are hoping to expand clinical opportunities to the lecture-based curriculum as well (as it stands, only PBL students get to shadow doctors in the first year), but he seemed less certain about that.

I haven't heard anything about this. Conditional acceptance still sounds like a good deal though...congrats! What do you have to do?

i haven't gotten accepted yet. but i've perused previous threads and that was offered in the past. looks like they changed the program slightly though and as long as you attend and complete the program you're in.

search the medprep program on nycom's website.

i will be interviewing in feb anyone heading up to old west bury then?

Crickets. Do they do silent rejections? I have been complete for 3 months... Good luck to those interviewing

II for Feb received today! I thought i would never hear back from this school, i even declined my acceptance to other D.O. schools, just so I could be in the NY area haha

Thanks. Yes, I tried that yesterday, but nothing comes up.

They stopped funding this program a few years ago so it is not active as of now.

Interview invitation today! It is a surprise as I completed the whole application on 1/13/2014. I love their high work efficiency. I have already called NYIT to schedule an appointment, but I didn't receive a confirmation e-mail from them. Will they send me a confirmation e-mail?

Congrats! You probably have some awesome stats?

Not really, but I am an in-state applicant. My GPA is about 3.80 and MCAT is 29. However, my GPA in China is suck, only ~2.50. It seems that NYIT-COM ignores my oversea GPA as I have finished 120 credits in a US college. I got 6 in VB as my first language is not English. VB is Greek for me.

Hey guys, current 1st year here. If you have any questions about applying, the school, the city, or anything else feel free to PM me or post. Good Luck to all this cycle!
Could you give my some tips on interview? I am so nervous about it.

Congratulations! That gives me hope, as I have not completed my application packet quite yet.

My goodness I have been complete since September and I heard zilch.

for those who sent in their deposit, did you guys hear anything?

I received a letter in mail about a week and a half after mailed it in, stating that they have received my deposit. However, I called the school before I received the letter and they were able to confirm it over the phone without a problem.

Question to people who've interviewed here and taken the LIRR. Does anyone know how close the N20 bus stop is to Hicksville station?

Did anybody who interviewed in November or early December and was told they would hear back in January get a response yet?

Waitlisted today after interview last week. Sigh, I thought the interview went great. At least I didn't get rejected
