Notes on a Scandal: Texas Waitlist!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To Snrub and Hope4thebest,

I received this email today after emailing TCOM...

"...We have had very little movement on the wait list, but it is still pretty early in the season. At this point, you do not need to worry about doing anything to improve your chances. The material contained in your application packet is complete and is the only thing we will need to make a decision, should we be in a position to offer you a seat."

So I guess those letters of updates and interests won't help.

well i called up utsw and like raidvenger already said, another update email would be going out on friday to everyone on the waitlist. damn i hope this doesn't mean they're done accepting this week.

dancer: you're right, this last stretch is going to be hard...esp now for me with school being done. i thought the mavs would give me a good two month distraction, but they proceeded to choke..again 😡 .

i totally agree....if the mavs had just gotten around golden state in the playoffs...it would've have given me something to look forward to do instead of looking fwd to checking my email everyday!! grrrr....don nelson...i really believe we could have done soooooo welll if we had just passed that one obstacle..it was really more of a mental than skills challenge!

Thanks ms_taken 🙁 hopefully waitlist movement will trickle down to TCOM soon.

I can only assume that it would, if all this UTSW waitlist mov't is as expected. TCOM waitlisters should benefit the most from all the mov't, since students generally ranked them lowest among the schools.

Does anyone know how large the waitlist pool for UTHSCSA this year is? How many applicants have they accepted off the waiting list in the past? It would be nice if the admissions office would just assign a rank to each person on the list and tell applicants which third they are in like alot of other schools. This way we can determine whether our chances of getting in off the list are realistic or just false hope and we can make personal plans accordingly. Any information that anyone can provide will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Bluemirage, your delicious avatar is going to wreak havoc with my summer workout plan and send me on a full-scale burger stuffing spree.

When I called they told me the pool is between 60-100, unranked. They claimed that each time a spot opened up, they re-evaluated the entire pool.
They said they couldn't speculate on how many would be pulled off, but in the past two years they've taken between 10-15.

Someone else called and were told a definitive 60 were on the list.

Someone on SDN got pulled off last week!!!!

:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: to the both of us!!

Thanks for the info and your best wishes! I hope we both get off the waitlist too! It will definitely make my life alot easier since I've been living here for a while.

That's ok...an occasional cheat meal once/twice a week won't hurt your diet too much 😉

UTSW waitlist email: 4:47 PM.....
33 people got off the waitlist 2 days ago!!!
I think that's quite a big number and doubt there will be waitlist movement as big as this one now...I wonder what this means for those of us in the top 25%..does this mean our application was bypassed and ruled off and now if there are any withdrawals they will focus on the 1/3 categories?

how big is the waitlist? I heard 230, so 33 should've covered the top 10%. strange.

we still have may 15th to go when a whole bunch of spots should open up.

Before the 33 offers, the top 25% had around 57 people and a 1/3 of 230 is around 77. So around 20 people got the "you're in the top 1/3" email. So if they focused on the top 1/3 two days ago, 13 other people were either in the top 25%, mid 1/3, or even bottom 1/3.

But how many of those 33 were OOS people?

I'm not quite sure why UTSW went through the trouble of dividing people up into top 10%, 25%, and the three 1/3s and just pass right by the top 25%...?

Well, no sense worrying... really not gonna make any difference stressing yourself out.

haha..this is getting weirder and weirder.

At this point I think those of you in the top 10% and 25% lists should call and tell them exactly why you're confused. Be nice and all but explain that you're now confused about exactly what the rankings mean and exactly what your status is. That's the only way anybody is going to find anything out.

You know, no one actually stated that they were in the top 10% and haven't got an offer, just top 25% and "top 10 or 25%." So top 10% of 230 is 23. Plus a few OOS'ers, maybe a few people from the 25% that doesn't really post on SDN, and then UTSW chose a couple people from the top 1/3 to better improve the diversity...etc of the class... and that's 33 people!

Maybe we're just on the lower end of the 25%. 😳

EDIT: for anyone that got accepted to UTMB off the WL, did you send update letters of any kind? just curious.[/QUOTE]

I didn't.

Congrats!!! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

seems like UTSW is confusing a lot of ppl... well at least they are telling you guys something??? other schools... *crickets**

So how much movement, in general, are we talking about come May 15th? Do people really wait that long to decide on a school?

okay but what was the point of making this waitlist then? haha i know you're just trying to find something positive, but seriously...this makes no sense whatsoever.

I guess it's just a rough preference scale... maybe maintaining the diversity of the class and such comes first?

you're right i think...diversity may be playing a role here...which still doesn't mean that i'm frustrated beyond imagination..
i mean i just don't understand why they would make brackets or categories if they are going to pass right through it...i mean yay for getting false hope!!

on another note: i've called wes norred a bunch of times in the past couple of days and let me tell you he is absolutely impossible to get a hold of..i'm guessing they are really busy with all this waitlist movement...i just hope and pray that someone gets a hold of him and gets some meaning out of this whole thing..at this point i would REALLY JUST like to know SOMEONE who got in from the top 10 or 25%....or give an explanation to why people were taken off the top 1/3...and the others weren't notified..

keep us posted guys if you hear anything!!!

yeah, i'm in the top 10% and didn't get accepted, hopefully i can find out what's going on by tomorrow

I'm top 1/3 and didn't get off the waitlist yet
I have to agree that diversity might be playing a role. Not so much that they're trying to make it more diverse then their original selection, but I bet they want to replace a white male, with a white male and replace black female with a black female. Which would quite easily explain their jumping over people

So before this whole waitlist business I was so excited to go to Spain for the next year and then reapply. But now, my heart is sullen again. I'm top 1/3 on UTSW and didn't get an acceptance 🙁.... hope they'll get to me...

So if I got a 4.0 in like 5 upper-level bio classes, should I send them an updated transcript? And should I send it to TMDSAS (even though I'm already submitting my reapplication) or to UTSW directly?

to be honest, I don't think they care too much to where its going to affect your chances above being top 1/3, but it couldn't hurt.

As far as the groupings instead of rankings to try to preserve diversity, that sounds like the smart thing to do, I never thought about it. The problem though comes from how many of each type can you have in the top 10%..5 or so max. So if out of the 33 people that dropped to open up spots, if 15 were of one race then you have to jump into the other groups.

I know they keep saying that since its different than last year, they have no way to predict this year, but I don't think it will be much different. Does anyone know how many big groups of movements they had in the past years? Or anything else about past years besides the 400ish people offered spots

anyone get in touch with mr. norred today? i'll only be able to try later in the day.

comets- don't you think that would be pretty unlikely? who knows..i guess we just need to hear from the horse's mouth.

Reasonably speaking, I find it unlikely that they made it through the top 10% and top 25% to let in so many top 1/3.
Making it past the top 10% though doesnt seem unlikely though considering there are 23 people in a diverse group. So really there aren't many in each group. So, having 33 people slightly skewed to one group could easily mean people in top 25% get in, with out all top 10% getting in, but not very easily mean that people in top 1/3 get in.
It is very confusing and hearing it straight from them is probably a better idea then all our guessing 🙂 What else am I supposed to occupy my waiting time with though

For those who are waiting, I just gave up a spot at Tech-- Good luck!!:luck:

David,
Did you ever get a hold of UTSW to ask them any questions today?

ms_taken, snrub I called TCOM today and mike told me that waitlist movement for TCOM doesn't really start until after June 15th. I thought this was werid because after June 15th medical school can only offer seat to applicants that are NOT holding seat to ANY medical school. hmph...

This whole process is so subjective and confusing. I'm going to concentrate on studying for the Mcat again and my 2008 apps for now. The uncertainty bites!

That does seem rather late, and doesn't seem to have consistency with the other Texas schools. Anyways, thanks for the update!

sorry guys...I tried to get a hold of him again yesterday and no such luck..he's a really nice guy but just IMPOSSIBLE to get a hold of ...
anyways..you think emailing him might be effective at all???

I'm a M1 and when I've emailed him with a question he has gotten back to me pretty quickly. Good luck.

Are any of you Out-of-state applicants who were waitlisted? I am (although I've been living in Austin for the past year). Be glad they gave you a range because I didn't get any top 10%, 25%, 1/3 etc...!

Wousers, oos= out of state. Looks like we oos'ers are all pretty much in the dark.

I emailed him early last week before the new WL email. He responded to it with the new waitlist email on thursday. Adding a line saying he has had a hard time keeping up with all the phone calls and emails, and then the generic wl email followed below it.
