Notes on a Scandal: Texas Waitlist!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
congrats to everyone getting off waitlists. and to everyone still waiting, best of luck!

So where are you going to be now? We're going to miss you at UTH!

edit: dur stonybrook. 🙂 sorry good luck there!

I assume Stonybrook base on his sig?

Congrats to all the people that got off the waitlists. 😀

For those of you who are sending update emails/emails of intent where do you send them to? A dean or the school's office of admission? Or should it be done by letter?

I want to send somethin gto UTSW, even though tthey told us not to, where would be the best place to send it?

i work at utsw right now..I think if you address it to whom it may concern and put hte location as tower of power, it will make it to the right person.

tower of power? are you beigns serious i have no clue

Everyone knows what you mean when you say the tower, and tower of power would probably make the mail offices day, but I dont recommend doing that 😀. Although I'd like to see if it actually made it. ..so yeah..joking.
Going crazy bc i really just want the..your in or not final say

in my experience, snail mail is the way to go. i'd address it to the admissions committee. i've also seen people addressing it to the dean so i guess it depends on how utsw handles these things.

one of the doctors I've been working for since sept (I interviewed oct 19ish) is on the admissions board.

that fact didnt help me. Although he could have told them I was a bad employee, or he had no opinion

I meant to ask, what made you decide Stonybrook over UTH?

Significant other is at Stony Med. While I know it's usually not recommended to make a decision based on a sig other, I was more worried about all the traveling I'd have to do if I went to Houston (to see both my family, which is in Dallas, and to see my sig other) - I'm pretty sure it would disrupt all my studying. With Stony or UTSW, I at least eliminate one side and make it easier on myself (although of course UTSW is my number one choice and I'd hack off any body appendage if it meant going there).

Between Houston and Stony, I didn't mind going to either, really they were about the same to me, and I mulled over all the little things each MD program had to offer and it pretty much came down to an even split. Except for the tuition, which isn't so bad once I switch state residencies (yeah I know you guys are vomiting at the thought of giving up TX residency, but hey I can always earn it back later).

It was funny because I was so indecisive since both schools were pretty much equally good that I asked everyone I knew for their two cents and they flipped back and forth like a fish out of water. So then I just made it a question of where I felt I would do better at - since the professional side of it wasn't so much an issue, I looked to my personal life.

I guess it's kinda strange because all that changes for UTSW, I don't get that omg I will slice off whatever you want vibe for either Stony or Houston - I suppose that's why UTSW is my #1...

Sounds good to me.

Seems like Wes Norred's email inbox is flooded anyway, so this is probably better.

Just to let you know I am waiting to relinquish my spot at UTMB until I receive a form to put my name on. Maybe other people are doing the same. I'd prefer to receive a form than just trusting the one line email. SO either today or tomorrow hopefully.

are we going to get an update email tomorrow from UTSW? So does that mean that whoever did not receive an email from wes with an acceptance probably won't get in through the may 15th cut?

I read his last email to say he'd try to email a more detailed picture this week, much like his other email said update end of april.
I don't know who found out that they were goign to email last thur/fri but being as they were accurate, if whoever that was could find out again, that would be great.

Why is there only waitlist movement at a couple of school? This sucks! Come on TCOM!!!

I talked to a friend who called TCOM yesterday and whoever she spoke with said that there was "some" waitlist movement; she also said that after speaking with current students, that MOST of the waitlist mov't occurs BETWEEN May 15th and June 1st, so I guess take that with a grain of salt.

i have this awful feeling that there is going to be virtually NO waitlist movement this year. please let this not be true! could someone please get a phone call on here so the rest of us can have a renewed since of hope!

anyone heard of movement on the TAMU waitlist? i'm hoping for similar elation. lolz

Congratulations, did you write them a letter of intent?

Thanks.

I wrote them a 2 page LOI back in march. I really think it helped and encourage writing one if you haven't yet. it's not too late, good luck :luck:

Sweet, I hope my LOI (also sent back in march) pulls through as well...

ugh the weekend I mail my LOI/update letter, the postage goes up. as if my paranoia wasn't on full alert already...

smoothdriver - 2 PAGES??? What could you possibly talk about? How many ways is there to say "hey i'll cut off my genitals if it means i can get an acceptance"

this is like watching paint dry.

has anyone spoken with Wes Norred to see when the next generic update email is going to be sent?

I thought the deadline for this year has already passed? Are you planning to do it next year?

I applied this year on the exact deadline and got waitlisted =T but I got a call today to go to the Master's program! So...now I will be going. Yayee something to look forward to. Also, the lady I spoke to said that TCOM accepted a few people on the waitlist over the weekend and 3 of them were accepted into the Master's program. Which means, they gave up 3 spots for the Master's program. Sooooo....all in all there was TCOM movement over the weekend....

I keep trying to decide when I'm going to lose hope...is it too soon? For the past two weeks I've said, "one more week than I'm giving up."

Congrats on the Masters program, although I know it's little consolation.

I totally forgot that some waitlisters will inevitably from the postbac program, and I suppose may have a higher place on the waitlist. Hopefully there's still enough movement for the rest of us.

nice. you'll like the postbac program. even though it feels like a step down early on, you'll quickly realize that at TCOM the postbacs are held in high esteem because those that eventually make it into TCOM do very well.

Yeah I'm very excited but it sucks bc I have only a few days to find housing and move all of my belongings and.... take care of everything here. =T I just hope I get into TCOM so I don't have to study for the Mcat again. haha Well thanks for heads up!!

hahah well i can recommend you to a few apartment places. i, like you, had to rush to get everything all together. also if you're from nearby, like arlington or grand prairie, i'd recommend just staying at home for the summer since you only have 2 summer classes and one of those is shadowing a doc for 2 clinics i.e. 2 days.

yeah....that was right after the great disappointment the match was so i had a lot to get off my chest at the time. i came up with as many updates as i could and praised the school every way possible and how well it fit me. I sent the letters to deans and the adcoms. maybe a bit too much, but i guess it paid off in the end. 👍

Not to completely discount LOIs, but I don't know how much help they really are, especially for Texas schools. For Texas schools you already ranked schools by your preference. They know if they are your first or last choice. I never wrote an LOI, and I was one of the people who was accepted off UTSW's waitlist from the top 1/3 a few weeks back. Even in the update emails from Wes Norred, he says no updates are necessary, and there is nothing you can do to affect your application. Don't mean to be the voice of doom, but LOIs seem redundant if you already ranked the school first for the match (and yes, I know the match does not include out of state schools).

UTSW is the only TX school that says they have a ranked list. Also, I don't think the individual schools see where they are ranked.

yeah UTSW is the only one that said it was ranked. Everyone else says pool. Though I think the schools may know, because A&M (Filo) had said they didn't think they would have too much waitlist movement because the majority of their class ranked it 1 or 2. So I think they at least know where they were ranked by each applicant. They may not know how that applicant ranked other schools though.

Random thing happened today and I was wondering if this happened to anyone else

I just got an email from tech saying they have set up an "eraider" account for me.
Problem is I never finished the application to tech

Maybe you should just show up for orientation on August 1st and if they ask who you are, just tell them you have an eraider account.

Got the tech eraider email as well.

As for LOIs being unimportant, I disagree, even if Wes Norred said don't send things. It can't hurt you, especially if you are on the waitlist, what more can they do to you except reject you?

Besides, if you have updates, that's also good to include anyway (I got published twice this month, I figured that might be worth throwing in my file), I don't know if it will change the position on the waitlist, but it's also for peace of mind, knowing that you did everything you could.

except I'm in at ut-h and waiting on utsw. There's a reason I never finished my tech application.

I wouldn't even know what to write or who to write a LOI to.

Dear Dean .....
