Notes on a Scandal: Texas Waitlist!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got in off the UTMB waitlist this morning (email from Theresa Silva). Initially I had them ranked higher than Texas A&M (where I have already been accepted), but at this point I am not sure. Also, I am an in-state applicant and I was a late September interview. Good luck to everyone.:luck:

Oh wow! Well, if it is what you want, congratulations. I know there are people like yourmom who would love you to go to UTMB, but stick with where you'll be happy. Keep us updated when you make your decision!

hmmm UTSW is skipping over sections of the waitlist eh

yay for bottom 1/3!

But seriously, I wonder why they even made the waitlist that large in the first place... >200 people on a waitlist is bigger than their own med school class. Even if they reach their 400 from last year, only looking at like top third/half the list. And why prioritize if you're going to jump groups...

I was in the top 10% of Southwesterns waitlist. which means I should've been in the top 23 on the waitlist. I didnt get an acceptance. So something must have happened between then and now. But the original email from Wes Norred said there is nothing more you can do to change your status now. So maby those letters of intent etc. really make a HUGE difference, or maybe something EXTREMELY fishy is going on. I just know that I'm tired of crying.

Hey Congrats on UTMB! So are you considering giving up your TAMU spot? Hoping to see some movement from them soon.

I just received an email from Wes Norred who informed me that many of the 33 people were on the out of state waitlist. That may be true but then how come on SDN people from in state are telling us they got in from being in the top 1/3 of the waitlist?? His answer to my question does not make sense. So the fishyness continues but with even more fishyness and less answers

I wonder why they sent out the update. In the first email, they said the number OOS was insignificant to the size of the in state waitlist. hmmm.... I sense fishyness... or at least less than full disclosure, which we've come to expect from UTSW

you're right, that doesn't really explain anything...very very strange.

Yeah I don't think UTSW qualifies as the hot cheerleader anymore (new people plz refer to Part IV or V or gosh I dont even remember which one it is anymore).

UTSW is more like the goth chick in the corner playing with a lighter - you sit at your desk wondering if she's going to light the classroom on fire or just fire up a doobie... She's dark, but it stirs something primal in you and you just can't help but wonder what's going through her mind...

And then again comes the question. If they are skipping through ranks does that mean that I should send a letter of intent to UTSW?

And what's the deal with May 15th? What's so special about it? is it when all the AMCAS people holding multiple acceptances have to choose their school?

yeah, it is when all multiple acceptances must be resolved.

With the letter, I don't know if it would make any difference, but if they truly don't look at them, it can't hurt you right? and if they do look it can't hurt!

I just spoke with Wes...he stated that of the 33 people admitted last week, a "significant" number of them were from OOS & they're on a different waitlist anyways (not part of the top 10%, 25%, etc). I also told him about people from the top 1/3 being admitted before others and then i asked if there's anyway we can further show our intent to go to UTSW....he stated that there's no way to further show your intent.

was anything said about IN-state "top 1/3" getting acceptances before top 10/25% ?

thanks for the update, i'm glad you got to speak with him, even though it sounds like he dodged the real question.

this is a fairly painstaking process that will drive one to drink 🙂barf: just in the stress of waiting. +pity+ I might have to do this to let of some steam:beat: , sorry peta. playing with the icons helped a little

awesome! good to see someone got through. so when you mentioned that people in the top 1/3 got in, what was his response?

he basically said something like..."people in the top 10% are doing the math and realizing they should have gotten in...but there are two different waitlists and a significant number of people were admitted from the out-of-state waitlist"...he never acknowledged that people in the top 1/3 got in

A significant portion of 33 is pretty significant to not be significant as stated regarding the significance of the OOS waitlist per the first waitlist email. I mean a significant portion of 33 is almost if not more than the OOS quota for UTSW. I mean that is pretty significant don't you think? 😛

Ok seriously, public Texas med schools are required to have at leat 90% of their matriculating class be composed to Texans right? Does this is mean most if not all of the OOS applicants prior to the 33 offers declined their offer from UTSW?

i have access to the usnews rankings and for the fall 2005 entering class, utsw extended 65 out of state offers and 25 matriculated. i'm taking "significant" to mean maybe about half? possibly 12-16 out of 33 for out of state...again complete guess. if this is the case, it would make some sense.

on another note, does anyone know how md/phd students figure into this wait list business?

The MSTP class was "finalized" on 4/15 and they have a class of ~12 now out of the 30+ they extended offers to. I think technically they can still change their minds to matriculate at other schools (5/15 deadline), but I don't think that's going to happen since they have to start lab rotations in a few weeks.

most MD/PhDs students are OOS, by the way.

Honestly, it is probably 90/10 that I will stay at A&M. I won't make a final decision until I get the packet in the mail, but I decided a while back in regards to different waitlist scenarios. Expect another UTMB spot to open up before June 15th.

hahahaha NOOOOOOOOO

*chirp* *chirp*

Anyone here anything yet today????????

:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Seriously...much too quiet in here! Where's all the action?! Lol, I guess today is officially the 15th so maybe I should be more patient... Show me some 😍 !

Is it at the end of the day of the 15th that OOSers have to drop to one school? So is it really the 16th that movement starts?

Haha, I love how we try to reason this out...

Well, I guess its just you and me today Diana...

Lol, I'm doing better...been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster these last two weeks (stupid boys  ). Would really really enjoy that elusive UTMB acceptance right about now...*hint hint* 😀 How's it going on your side, rowdyrock?

There is no may 15 equivilant date for TMDSAS schools b/c mutliple offers were resolved after the "match"... correct?? If so, is there any other crazy date/deadline upon which we might anticipate more WL movement, or is it just going to be random from here on out??

You'll have the trickle down from Baylor at this point. There was alot of Baylor waitlist movement today so if people choose Baylor over whatever instate spot they might be holding we should see some movement over the next few weeks.

i have no clue but i submitted my final update letter to TAMU this morning. 4.0 + best student among the grad students in the core curriculum has to be worth something right?

yourmom,
do you know how many postbacs will tcom take this year? i have a few ms1 friends there right now who are all rooting for me to get off of the tcom waitlist, but are also telling me that there are many postbacs guaranteed to get in for the 12 slots or something....

I thought the deadline for this year has already passed? Are you planning to do it next year?

May 15th came and went---where are all the new shiny acceptances????

I'm not waiting anymore, but I am waiting for friends 🙂

The only other date is June 15th, which is when anyone who has an acceptance will be dropped from any waitlists they are on. That will shorten up lists for people who don't have any acceptances.

congrats bro, that's quite good to hear

.

Does that mean your withdrew your spot for UTSW and are sticking at UT-H. I'm trying to buy some property and figuring out my fail safe date is a problem. June 15 may be a little too long to wait.

congrats david.
more movement = insanely checking email

I haven't withdrawn, but since i'm bottom 1/3 I am pretty certain I'm not going to make it in.

ah well, since they've already skipped to the top 1/3, and are now hitting the top 10%, I think skipping the remainders in the top 1/3 (and higher) to get to the bottom third wouldn't be out of the question

congrats on the acceptance david!!

I just got an email from Wes Norred very short and brief but says the acceptance letter is in the mail. I'm going to withdraw myself from UTMB very soon and I hope that opens a spot up for those of you that are waiting. I was in top 10% of waitlist. GOOD LUCK to EVERYONE.
