NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
how are students notified on their acceptance? I have received mixed messages from NSU faculty, students I met during my interview, etc.

Look on your webstar account that you used to submit the primary and check its status. If you see Provisionally accepted, you're in! 👍

in my case I had to call. They didn't update my webstar for a month after I found out about my acceptance. I was the first or second interview group though.

mine was updated on webstar first, then an email a few days later, then an acceptance packet another week later.

Mine was through Webstar ~4 days post-interview, then a certified mail pickup form < 5 days post-interview (which I missed because I was away at a different school by then), then a congratulations email =)

hey guys, i know some of you have gone down and looked at apartments already, and a friend of mine who is currently attending NSU has suggested some spots to look it, but what I'm wondering is when we should actually be signing a lease and such...thanks!

anyone familiar with the admissions process post-interview? Is there a particular day of the week the adcom meets to go over apps and make decisions etc?

thanks

even though people are looking around, it seems like people arent going to sign leases until 1-2 months before they move in. so my guess end of may or in june. people were discussing this in the "Medical Students" forum under NSUCOM Class of 2013.

Admissions committee re-reviews your entire file to make a decision on Wednesdays. Then after admissions committee makes a decision, the dean signs off on it the next day... Thursday. Then it usually takes somewhere between one to seven days for people to hear what that decision was.
I'd check Webstar first... most people find out first via Webstar.

Ok people. If you are asking about anything admissions wise, where to fly, how to get to campus, where to stay, or pretty much anything pre/post interview then you can rest assure that it is somewhere in this thread! Most likely multiple times. I'm not trying to go super d!ck mode or anything but these are almost the exact same questions being asked every couple of days. Show some initiative and browse through a few pages before just posting a question.

And search using the search this thread tool, too. 42 pages is kinda long...azcom took me a while to get through and thats only 12 pages!

I was trying to log onto webstar to find out post-interview information but I haven't the slightest what my webstar login and pw are. I did the secondary back in September and apparently I didn't write any such information down.

Any ideas?

Hey, I know you guys have already answered all the questions about when you usually hear etc...

I know they usually make decisions on Wednesday and you find out on Friday.

I was just wondering if anyone who interviewed last Tuesday has heard back yet? I know Ellen mentioned that they might not even get to any of our files last Wednesday. Anyway... anyone?

Anyone have any idea of what the count of acceptances given so far is?

Anyone have any idea of what the count of acceptances given so far is?

I know that you asked this a while ago and never got an answer so I will attempt to explain my thoughts. Unfortunately, I dont have a definitive answer for you and Im not sure how someone would even find out that number.

Regardless, here are my thoughts:
-After being accepted you sign up for an online group to receive orientation info. In the group right now are ~112 people. I would imagine these 112 people are pretty set on going to NSU since they activated their NSU accounts, paid first deposit, signed up for all the prientation info, etc. But, there are probably sill others that just havent signed up yet.
-In November and December I was seeing very high acceptance rates for people post-interview. After the new year... that trend seemed to shift to being a high number of waitlist spots.
-The Dean at our interview said theyve had more applications than ever this year and all of them were sent in EARLIER than ever before as well.
-There are always people who interview late (lets say after Feb) and still gain acceptances. I dont think that NSU has filled up all their spots yet. While the number of interviews/acceptances may be decreasing.... there's still spots left.
-Also a lot of spots will probably open up March 15th, which is the deadline for the next deposit ($1050). People that have multiple acceptances will be narrowing down their choices by then.

Thanks for the response. That makes sense. My AACOMAS was just verified yesterday, so I imagine it'll go out to the schools in the next couple days. How long did it take to get a secondary?

Most secondaries I got within a few days of my AACOMAS verification. But all the essays in the secondaries are on SDN (search for them, or i think chocolatebear still has them on his profile)

so you could get started on them now. Nova's was straight forward and didnt have an essay, just some busy work info like volunteer and shadowing experiences..

When I am checking my app's status online will I be looking at the slot labeled decision or application preference? Webstar is an awkward system...

After signing into the Admissions part, click Fall 2009 (might be two on there, if so click second), read next to "Decision:"

Thats where you will find out your status

I'm one of the acceptees, but I'm still waiting for 2 interviews. I am also one who has not signed up for the online group. I'm leaning towards one of the other schools instead of NSU, so don't give up home!

Admissions claimed that their app rates were up 7% this year

NSU's deposit policy is a heck of a lot better than LECOM...if I want to hold LECOM-E, I have to drop $1500 within 15 days...😱 I'd expect to see a lot of movement in NSU around March just because I think a lot people will have made a decision then, but not because NSU has a bad program, imho.

you should hear back very soon. but i heard of one person having to wait almost a month. hope for the best and good luck.

It took me almost a month to hear, but they kept mailing stuff to my parent's house while they weren't there and my webstar wasn't updated.

I interviewed in Feb and had to wait almost 2 months. As the classes start to get fuller (you'll see this everywhere) admissions turnover will slow down.

how does waitlist work here, do they just tell you you are on the waitlist or they rank you?

ughhhh..got the "alternate status" ltoday. i looooved this place. do they accept letter of intents? if so, who do i send it to?? also, do they accept updates on grades?? i am praying and hoping and wishing and begging to get in here!!! i LOVED the area!

anyone have any idea of what the alternate/waitlist movement was like in years passed?

Not sure about waitlist movement in years past. But they would definately accept updates on grades.

People in this thread have sent letters of intent this year but i havent heard if any have worked yet. I dont think the waitlist gets looked at again until mid march so thats probably why. As long as you do it respectfully I dont see any harm in sending one.

Just dont beg and plead. Instead say..."this is my first choice because of x, y, and z." and then "since my application was sent in, I have begun a new medical volunteer position____, and I have also worked with a DO an extra ___hours at ___hopsital." etc etc. just list why youre more qualified than ever to become a student at NSU.

I wasn't able to submit my secondary until early January.
Was that way too late?
Do I still have a shot?

As long as the deadline hasn't passed when you submit and you haven't be rejected there will always be a chance. Obviously the earlier you submit the better, since there will be more open seats. Your chances depend on the strength of your app and the strength of the other applicants vying for the remaining spots. :luck:

I wanted to let everyone know that we are going down to Ft Lauderdale the first weekend in March. I will take pictures and post them on the new SDN Flickr page! If anyone wants to meet up, just let me know! Also, I am reading through the 44 page off-campus living guide from NSU and it has some good information about the area and some discounts at area apartment complexes! Here is a link to download the PDF if you don't already have it:

http://www.nova.edu/reslife/offcampus/forms/offcampus_guide.pdf

Let me know if there are any problems with the link and I will gladly email you the PDF as an attachment.

Submitting secondary in Jan is pretty late. If you want a better answer of what your chances might be then give me some of your stats, location, etc. Otherwise, hopefully youll get a call and best of luck.

Thanks aterry. Thatd be great to post some more pics up there. I'll be going down end of March during my spring break. Let me how the housing/apartment search is looking when you go!

are there any statistics on how many people get interviewed. how many people get offered admissions? The out of state students? Student demographics?

this is from usnews, not guaranteed to be accurate.

Total admissions data 2102 applied, 481 interviewed, 366 were accepted, 228 enrolled
In-state admissions data 516 applied, 203 interviewed, 160 were accepted, 138 enrolled
Out-state admissions data 1586 applied, 278 interviewed, 206 were accepted, 90 enrolled

2007 Total medical school enrollment 916
2007 In-state enrollment percentage 49 %
2007 Percent of men enrolled 50 %
2007 Percent of women enrolled 50 %
2007 Percent of minority student enrollment 33 %
2007 Percent of underrepresented minority student enrollment 18 %
2007 Percent of international student enrollment 1 %

i havent seen an acceptance for the new year interview folks yet on sdn. im sure the alternate isnt something to really sweat about. they might be offereing 1 or 2 folks per interview day acceptances and putting the rest of the folks on alternate status who WOULD have gotten acceptances if they interviewed earlier.. im sure it will move plenty...thats what im hoping at least.

Your GPA is great and should help. MCAT is a little low but nothing that will keep you out of an interview in my opinion. Residence-wise I was just wondering if you were IS or OOS but it wont factor in too much since NSU is a private school and not too in-state specific. Hopefully you have some good shadowing, volunteering, and LOR.

Because your stats are good, I think you'll have a shot. If your a female or URM than youll have an even better shot. If I were you I'd call to verify that all of your materials are ACTUALLY IN. Because if they didnt input one of your LOR or didnt receive a signature page...they wont process your application through.

just found out that i was put on the alternate list. guys know the percentage of accepted last year on the alternate list?

anyone have any idea of what the alternate/waitlist movement was like in years passed?

fyi: the next deposit @ NSU is due on March 15th...I would expect that since NSU's initial deposit is only $950 and LECOM-Erie/Brad's was $1500 that there could be some movement for those Bradenton folk who are really interested in their program. Many other interviews are beginning to wrap up and people (such as myself) area really honing down on their options and deciding what programs are ideal. Spring is coming, people are beginning to see light at the end of the North snow tunnel, so the alure of a warm climate may be starting to dissipate, too

Personally, I would expect some movement in the waitlist...but again, I'm an applicant, too...so take it with a grain of salt =)

:luck:!

The huge sums of cash these schools expect us to have laying around is killing me. Wasn't the first grand enough?! 😎
