NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay. I applied to their school and received an email from them with a pdf file attached. However, the file is password encrypted and I have no idea what password they want. Anybody with the same problem and any help?
If you are talking about the copy of the secondary you submit and then they say they are going to email you, mine was 'corrupted' and I was never able to open it.

Did everyody get the email telling us that orientation is august 3rd? Seems so far away.

edit: nevermind, I see the update in the "groups" posting...

ashley-
go into the "DO class of 2013" group, and on the main page there is an announcement saying it is really on August 3rd and not in July like the e-mail said

Hey thanks for keeping me on the ball. I have been checking that group but there hasn't been anything in a while. You rock!

I really don't think I'm on these Class of 2013 emails from Ellen. I never get them, ever. 👎

does anyone know exactly what we do during the orientation week, since I assume that we aren't actually taking the normal classes that we would generally take.

I've been getting e-mails from Leslie at my primary e-mail account.

It doesn't really make sense to me why she'd post the update about orientation in the group if the original was sent via e-mail. I wouldn't have thought to check on SharkLink if I hadn't checked in here on SDN!

In any case, I'm getting really excited for school to start! 😀

orientation....medical school....nova....YAAAAAY!

Do not listen to the lady at the help desk. I am pretty sure she has no clue what she is talking about. She says we need to register before we can access Sharklink. According to Ellen, we need to access Sharklink in order to fill out necessary documentation to be able to register. Anyway, I emailed Dawn Laforte, who is the contact person mentioned in Ellens email I believe, if we have problems with Sharklink. Here is her response:

Due to a technical error, the Shark Link System is unavailable. We will send an email once the system is back online.

Thank you,

So don't sweat it. It is not even close to the time that we should be rushing anything. Be patient and I will see you guys in August.

I called the office to ask some questions and Dawn is a complete *****. It was obvious that she did not know what she was talking about and eventually she had Leslie assist me with my favor basic and simple questions. The girl sounds like she is strung out or something. Thank goodness that Leslie was able to help me. So, if you have questions call Leslie instead 954-262-1416 or email her at [email protected]. She is very friendly AND she knows what she is talking about.

Don't be confused 🙂 ...there was a scheduling change orientation will begin on August 3, 2009. If anyone chooses to live in gradaute dorms you can't move in until after August 1, 2009 that is why the date got pushed back.

any questions or concerns contact Leslie 954-262-1416 or [email protected] Dawn who we were directed to speak with is a ***** and sounds like she is completely clueless....Leslie will help you

Anything by Atul Gawande. So so so good. You can read a bunch of his articles on newyorker.com, or his books Better or Complications. Can't recommend him highly enough.

I read Complications. Pretty good, but I don't know if it was my favorite

I also read On Call, by Emily Transue, MD, Internal Med. A little depressing, but very interesting. My fav

Also Stiff, by Mary? Roach (no joke). Kinda interesting with a different take. One really cool thing I learned was that there was a medicine made long ago in Egypt (if I recall correctly) from humans who ate so much honey that they SWEAT HONEY before they died. Insane...

Yea. Nearly every medical book I read is the same, so I like to find things with history of factoids. Same reason I read "Knifeman" and a few other history type books.

So..Is it too early to say we have only 157 days left until orientation?

Dumb question that I haven't been able to find out myself yet.

When reviewing the 3rd year rotation schedule, seems like we are locked into the core rotations only with only 1 exception, right?

I think I was too psyched during the interview day to absorb this crucial information. My main concern is getting my audition rotations in Y3 INSTEAD of doing them in Y4....is that possible? I'm not seeing how these rotations are laid out yet...thanks!

I'm thinking that EM, Gen surgery, and for a stretch Ortho or plastic surgery, and fallbacks of Family Med or perhaps peds (really unsure of peds though). I highly doubt that I'll consider Radiology, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Cardiology, or OB/Gyn, and I'm doubting IM.

Btw...when is this new website going to be put up??

TIA!

I *think* almost every school has pretty rigid 3rd year, and people don't start doing audition rotations until 4th year.

audition rotations during third year is worthless. They probably won't remember you and you don't have your skills polished enough to really wow them over the fourth year students that are doing audition rotations.

I heard that they were helpful...then when you are applying to the rotations during the beginning of the 4th year, you'll already have rotated there. Some programs, from what heard, require that you rotate through there. Although 4th year @ the beginning gives you some time, but its < ideal from my understanding...?

i read stiff too... and yes, by far the most outstanding part in my memory was the honeyed people. the people would die from malnutrition (eating nothing but honey) and then their bodies would be cut up and placed in jars of honey, stored for a few years, and then sold in the market as medicine. used for bruising, I believe. pretty wild.

I have been reading this book called Molecules of Emotion by Candace Pert Ph.D. She is a classic trained scientist, did her Ph.D at Hopkins where she discovered the opiate receptor. she went on to discover many other neuropeptide receptors in other parts of the brain, body, and even on white blood cells. Anyhow, each receptor that she found in the brain, she also found on the surface of WBCs. And her theory of why is that the WBCs act as intermediaries between the brain and the body, allowing for neuropeptides from the brain to reach the organs. therefore allowing the various neuropeptides (from stress, joy, etc) to affect the organ cell transcription by influencing the secondary message system. thus, our emotions can be affecting our health. and there is evidence of a body-mind connection. pretty cool. her book is a good read. she interweaves the story of her life, and is an all around inspiring scientist and woman.

oh yes, and other scientists have similar research findings that corroborate hers. their findings can be studied in the field of psychoneuroimmunology.

158 days would be to early. 157 is okay

I have been reading this book called Molecules of Emotion by Candace Pert Ph.D. She is a classic trained scientist, did her Ph.D at Hopkins where she discovered the opiate receptor.

So when I was a senior in highschool, I was taking AP biology and we had a test on the second day of class (tuesday) on the first two chapters of the book. One of the questions I missed on the test was "who discovered the opiate receptor" .... it was a little foot note, on a little picture. It was our teacher's way of making srue we'd never forget to read ANYTHING.

...to this day, i remember candice pert.

lol.

Oh dear.

Pick a school and/or hospital where you think you might want to do residency. Find their web page for "visiting students" or "elective rotations" and find the rules for (what they don't call) audition rotations. For comparison, the U of Washington has a pretty standard page for this.

You'll find that you are expected to have completed all your 3rd year core rotations before you are allowed to rotate elsewhere.

You'll find that each hosting institution has forms and schedules and a very set process for applying for auditions.

You'll find that you need your home school's permission and cooperation.

Now look at the match organizations, nrmp.org for ACGME, natmatch.org for AOA. Look for the timelines of the match, and you'll see that you have almost six months from the start of 4th year (July) until your rank list is due (Jan/Feb).

Which means that you need to plan to do auditions first thing 4th year, to set you up to apply and do interviews in the fall, to set you up to rank programs by the due dates.

Highly recommended reading, skim for now: Iserson's Guide to Getting a Residency.

Best of luck to you.

All accounts I've read from 4th year through to residents and attendings have said that unless it is a home program, they probably won't remember you. You will be competing with not only the 4th year audition students but also the 3rd year students at the home institution. Its better to just perfect your basic doctoring skills in each speciality and then wow them later on. Baby steps.

I still have heard nothing from NOVA and I applied in October... What is going on???

Thanks for the clarification Dr M! I've asked a few of my friends who are Y2 MS who really couldn't give me such a direct and informed answers!

:luck: to you, too!

I was wondering if Nova takes interviews without getting the DO letter first, or do they put your application on hold until it's received?

Also, for all those who already interviewed, roughly how long was it from when your secondary was submitted to when you got the interview invite? I know it's different for every applicant, but it might be good to know...

Thanks 😳

Did AACOMAS in May, secondary for Nova in July, interview invite in October, interviewed November and accepted less than a week from the interview. Hope that helps!

Primary to AACOMAS was sent in August (but not released from them till October 1st), secondary to nova sent by second week of October, heard back from for interview end of november, interviewed mid December, and heard back from 9 days later about acceptance.

where do we go when we interview. i see that it starts at 9 but not where to go.

Terry Health Professions Division (HPD) Building. Actual address for that building is 3200 South University Drive I believe. Zip is 33328. Good luck!!

I took the Hampton Inn hotel shuttle along with about 6 other interviewees...free and worth chatting it up with others and just relaxing...my rental car sat at the hotel. I checked out the building the night before and memorized the route...it was < ~8 min away so I was fine either way. Its a HUGE campus, btw...don't just drive around and expect to magically find it without asking someone specifically. I didn't and I'm really good at getting around new places.

Its a pretty darn nice building, facing a pond/small lake which appeared to contain a fountain. Large pillars with a over-hanging roof so you don't have to worry about rain getting out of the shuttle.

Inside the door, they have small museum-ish appearance with lots of glass cases with a small front desk. I don't recall if I even checked with the front desk, but just make an immediate right at the desk after entering the building, as per the instructions in the interview invite email. Go though the (double?) wooden doors of the admissions office. They have a PA program which is less formal; most likely they will be interviewing at the same time.

When we were interviewing back in December, the admissions room filled up really fast and they moved some of us to a lecture hall. Just go in the admissions office and wait...they will come find you. You don't have to hike around the building looking for them like we had to =)

They also give you a black NSU pad-folio with a pad of paper, but no pen. I always bring my own pen + pad, but it was a nice bonus. And the name tags actually stay ON!!! 👍👍👍

My group was large (~ 30) people, but my interview was really straightforward and relaxed.

Good luck - you'll do fine!!
