NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks aterry! I love sushi and I will definitely try it out!

Skiracr- if you like sushi, I highly recommend Marumi sushi off University in Plantation. We ate there and it was amazing. Even the normal ginger salad was really good and different! I also saw India House in Plantation and read some good reviews on it. La Brasa is Peruvian and it looked good too...I can't wait to eat all of these interesting cuisines when I go down again!

When does school start for NOVA? When should one have an apartment? I am hoping to get off the "hold" list at my state school, but one can never count on that... I must have really screwed up the interview to get put on that list at my STATE school.. ugh. Any information as to when I should have everything "set up" for my move to NOVA would be helpful.

August/2-3 months in advance (places will not have you hold a lease agreement for longer than that usually in So FL).

Look at a previous forum (2011). I believe I made a timeline for my classmates of things that must be done before the start of school. Hope it helps.

Orientation starts August 3rd and School starts the week after that August 10th. The white coat ceremony is August 9th which I believe is mandatory.

I think most people move down some time in July.

Good luck!

Thanks for putting things into perspective, because I know for a fact that it isn't better than green tea ice cream, which I'm eating right now.
Oh, no problem. Anytime. As far as I'm concerned, green tea ice cream trumps all.

anyone finding cheap flights to ft lauderdale lately?

LinkDO- check out kayak.com It has a setting where you can check the cheapest flights by weekend or any day. I have had great luck with them!

Just curious, has anyone who interviewd on March 5th heard anything back yet?

I received the following email from Albert Whitehead:

Posting on Public Websites

Dear Class of 2013!!!
I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that as a medical student you now have an expectation to conduct oneself as a professional. In these times of technology, I want to caution everyone to be mindful of the information that they post on line whether photos, or even comments that you may psot on websites such as myspace, facebook and Student Doctor.Net. Comments or photos that you post that are opinions or "fun" photos, might be considered inappropriate. I have scanned some of the most popular sites and have discovered some inappropriate postings and recommend that you take a moment and monitor what you have posted.
Best.........
Dr. W.

The tone of the email disturbs me. "Conduct oneself as a professional" and "Comments or photos that you post that are opinions or "fun" photos, might be considered inappropriate." If there is one pet peeve of mine, it is threatening sounding emails with ridiculously vague terminology. Whether what I post is "inappropriate" or not shouldn't have any bearing on my performance as a medical student.

Albert, if you're reading, I will comment on and post whatever I want.

The actions of your private life that you publizie online reflect not only on you, but also on your affiliations, such as your career, place of employment, and your place of education. Just because it doesn't affect your education doesn't mean it isn't going to affect people's thoughts about your education.

What's vague about it? Don't post pictures of yourself getting plastered at the local bar on your Facebook or Myspace page. Don't post lewd pictures of yourself with your BFF. I don't think the message was exactly vague or out of line.

The thing is that it really doesn't have much bearing in your professional life either. People usually don't care. I've encountered numerous physicians, businessmen, etc. that were known drinkers, womanizers, and all around not nice people but they still get solid business because they are good at what they do.

I personally hate having photos of myself online anyway, but now I feel paranoid I said something sarcastic and it was blown out of context. I have received messages on my facebook from a random SDN person before, which I found more rude/unprofessional than a stupid joke. I don't have anything against what he says and I know it was meant in good spirits, but it is still one of those things I could've done without hearing. I have seen some awful commercials for diets and supplements from "harvard medical doctors" and whoever else. I think those paint the school in a bad light, yet I don't think anyone is boycotting the schools for it. I think Dr. Will is a complete tool and is more unprofessional than most doctors, yet he seems to be doing alright for a nova grad. 😉

What Dr. W is saying is that doctors are held to a different standard in society. As stated previously, how we conduct ourselves is a reflection of our affiliations, whether it be NSUCOM, your hospital, or the medical profession itself. You may have pictures of yourself in whatever fashion you want, but to project it publicly is just not advised. Dr. W is not censoring our freedom of speech since he can't reprimand us for such violations, but he is ultimately protecting us. When applying to medical school, internship, or residency, there are going to be individuals who will use the WWW to find information about you. There are professors at NSUCOM who have FaceBook groups and can see any public picture you have on your network. Take it with a grain of salt. Things happen.

I wonder if there was a specific reason for the email. Is anyone going to look at more apartments soon?

I was accepted to WVU (MD program)... I am accepting bribes from those on the waitlist! LOL j/k. Does anyone know if NOVA allows "second looks?" I have some things to consider and I would like to visit again so that I make the best decision possible. Also, I was offered an interview at FSU and need to schedule that by tomorrow (if I choose to accept the interview offer). I am from Maryland so I would like to hit the FSU interview and NOVA second visit in one trip. Anyone have any suggestions on the feasibility of that? I know Ft. Lauderdale and Tallahassee are quite far away from one another.
Thanks

Hey, I recently went back to re-visit NOVA for a second view. I emailed admissions about a week in advance and they were very receptive. They gave us a parking pass and let us walk around campus with no problems. My dad was able to see the facilities of the HPD and the rest of campus. You should have no problems.

Also, before I go bugging admissions I wanted to ask here: I've been accepted, paid my two deposits, sent in my transcripts. Does anyone know what the next step/deadline would be?

I think next step is to get your shots in order, I want to say the deadline is before the start of classes.

I just think it's a little ironic that you made up a fake account and fake name to post this message. If you really don't care about what you comment or post online, why not use your real name? Why? Because there are repercussions for your actions. Which is all Dr Whitehead is trying to say. He's saying you must held accountable for what you do, especially as a physician. I agree that his email seemed a little cold and accusatory, but I get it... I understand the reason behind it.

I ended up calling admissions anyway just to be sure and they said the next step is an orientation packet which should be mailed in the next few weeks if everything else (deposits, transcripts, letter of intent/technical standards) is in order.

is NSU still interviewing for next fall?

not sure- its definitely later in the game but I dont think anyone on SDN would know as best as the admissions office. I'd give them a call.

Hey adizzle,

Which address did you send your transcripts to? (In the emails it says to send them to the Admissions office, but the NOVA website has another address.) I'd like to make sure they are going to the right place before I send them to avoid the hassle of resending.

Also, what do you all know about final transcripts and registration? I am taking a class right now that has nothing to do with med-school pre-reqs but the class doesn't finish till May 15, and registration begins May 1 (right?) Can I send in my transcripts from this school before this course is finished and have them "count" for registration and financial aid purposes before the class finishes?

I'm going early next month. How are people finding roommates? I planned on finding someone through SDN/facebook... At first, it seemed like a great idea, but I can't help feeling like a creeper messaging people. "hey, you don't know me...wanna live together?"

Do people already know their living situation before they go down, or are you guys just hoping for the best?

I would look at facebook and don't feel bad messaging people. I think so many people are in the same boat and they understand. It is right to be careful and cautious about living with someone you met online. One of my best friends met her roommate on craigslist though and they only met once and really get along well so who knows! You might contact student housing at Nova as well as most schools are aware of people wanting roommates. Good luck!

FB is a good option. There is an online Nova roommate finder under ResLife. Some people found their roommates during my year from that site. Depending on your preference, you may want to live with someone from your class, COM itself, a different Health Professional. Keep in mind that those not within a COM program may not understand study habits, med school etiquette, and what not. 😛

when do you guys think the waitlist will start moving for NOVA??

Leslie told me to send the transcripts to the following address:

PO Box 299000
Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33329.

Transcripts are all sent to the processing center, whether before notification of admission or not. Your transcripts are scanned and made electronic. That way it can be accessed by all necessary parties. Having a paper copy can be cumbersome.

Just reminding everyone of the NSUCOM c/o 2013 group on facebook. There are currently only 113 members (including students from current M1). It would be nice to connect with future classmates and roommates ;-)

I'm going down this coming Friday and should be in Florida for the whole next week, so if you are in town, pm me and maybe we could meet up!

If any one's coming down to do apartment hunting or anything and you need a place to stay, give me a shout. I've got an extra bedroom and I love having company 😀

bump. hope all is well with nsu'ers

hey does anyone know anything about gradplus loans or which loans we apply for after fafsa? will nova send us a list of ones we can apply for when they send us a financial packet?

anyone heard of any movement on the "alterante status" lists yet??

ya im interested in knowing when the waitlist moved last year, if anyone knows please tell

I doubt that there's been movement on the wait list since there are still people waiting to hear judgement on their interview.

linkDO,

I think NSU Financial Aid is supposed to send us info on all this.

So I just spent some time reading through some NSU forums from last year's cycle. Here's what I've come to understand:

-It sounds like between 10-20 people get off the waitlist.
-They had a March 15th deposit due date too... and the earliest someone heard afterwards was April 2.
-Most didn't hear till June.

Hope that helps in case some of you are freaking out. I know what it feels like. Best of luck to everyone.

Is that 10-20 people got off the waitlist and told about it on SDN or the adcom said that 10-20 people get off the list? Anyways i thought it would be alot more people get off the waitlist since their are so many medical schools in florida and people would decide to go elsewhere in FL.

10-20 was a number range reported by last year's applicants that were told by NSUs adcom people.

So i interviewed last week and Just checked online and I was given an alternate status. Anyone have any feedback on success of alternates at NSU, especially this late in the game? Thanks!
