NSU Master of Biomedical Science 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know this isn’t the thread for it, but since a bunch of us are looking for options to get into dental / med school, I thought maybe someone might give some input.

What do you guys think about those certificate programs? for ex) FIU has a certificate in molecular and biomedical sciences. Would this help an application? Obviously this doesn’t hold the weight of a masters program but it’s also shorter (an economic option?) and could possibly be completed before the end of the cycle.

I know that program gives a guaranteed interview as long as you maintain a high enough GPA, which for a MD school is not bad but is also a gamble.

Any idea if it also helps pre dents? It does specifically say that its similar to med school, but I'm not sure if the same applies to dental. At this point id rather take courses similar to my first year in dental school than retaking the DAT. I might speak with NSU program advisors. the certificate is also only 14 courses, which seems similar to NSUs one year masters program.

I think it helps if you do well. But the FIU program wasn’t an option for me because federal loans don’t cover it. I’m wondering if it’s the same way for other non-degree granting programs? Just something to consider.

FIU's certificate program is a nice way to get into their MD program, but I heard the program is very challenging. For one thing, I believe I heard that their grading system pins you against your classmates which means there is no room for failure. The GPA requirement is super high for either a guaranteed interview (if you didn't apply to their MD program) or guaranteed acceptance (if you did apply to their MD program and got waitlisted). Lastly, the certificate program does not qualify for financial aid which means you have to find the money to pay for the 9 month program (~20k-25k).

Although their certificate program has its challenges, their MD program is very good from what I hear. I have friend who's finishing his second year and moving on to clinicals. He's loving it there. However, he agrees that the certificate students have to work that much harder to try and get in.

Anyone knows anything about Barry master of biomedical science

Oooof! Guess a masters is my only other option then! 21k is a lot of money for a certificate lol.

I know that schools like their program. I saw on the 2022 class profile that they had a bunch of students from Barry’s MBS program.

Has anyone considered PCOM’s MBS? I’m pretty sure they do conditional acceptance for their DO school as well but I know they at least do a guaranteed interview.

Anyone know if they're still sending out interview invites? Or should I assume I didn't get one?

Interviewing early May! Excited, yet nervous as I have heard this program is very difficult. Look forward to the potential opportunity.

We can only go off of last year’s thread which noted there were 3 batches of interview invites. Not sure how true that is, but I would not lose hope yet.

Congrats! Would you mind sharing what the earliest and latest interview dates they let you choose from were?

Thanks! I wonder if they will send out the second batch before the last interview date they gave you, anyone have any idea?

If i'm not mistaken, i was informed over the phone that admission decisions would be done by the end of May. So, i'd assume they'd send out the 2nd batch before may 13th

In 2007 they sent out 3 batches of interviews on April 6th, April 10th, April 24th. Last Year, Also 3 batches were sent for this cycle on April 9th, 12th and May 2nd. This year so far April 18th. Given that in 2017 the last interview day was May 12th and in 2018 the last interview day was May 16th, and this year the last Interview day is May 13th. I’d say there’s a good chance another round should be sent out between Friday and Monday the 29th and I am not sure if this year they are having a 3rd batch.

Does anyone know when rejection letters are sent out? I'm just curious to know if we were rejected would we have known by now?

Has anyone gotten an interview invite for the second batch?

Congrats! at least now you have something to fall back on!

Thank you! I wish I could just go into Nova but this give me a sense of peace in case the stay in ghost town with me.

Congratulations! I'm going to apply this Monday to Barry as well.

Thank you! In anything I can help just let me know. They normally are pretty quick in making decisions.

Does Barry have a linkage to anywhere? Maybe I should apply too..

I would like to know the same thing. I also want to find out if students have tried to apply to medical school/dental school while in the program.

I just know that this past cycle 30+ accepted into Nova dental program were from Barry.

I wonder how long their semesters are and what classes MBS students take during the Fall and Spring semester? I heard some programs like NYMC end their semester in November and post grades just in time for students to still apply to medical/dental school concurrently.
