How much was medical and dental insurance a year if you are on the schools plan? I want to compare to my current plan to see if it is the same.

From my bill:
Dental = $296.40/yr
Medical = $3998.76/yr

Does anybody know if NYCOM gives us Microsoft Office? I know my undergrad did, but I can't install those CD's anymore. I'm buying a new computer, and I'm not sure if I should get it with Office or not.

Thank you hunter and gatherer. What is the deal with co-pay's and perscriptions? Thank you in advance.

Nope, you're on your own for that. Either order it with your computer (usually an extra $100) or find someone with it that has the necessary registration codes.

At the NYCOM clinic everything is free. Copay at other offices is $10. Perscriptions are $5 and $20 from what I've seen. Not sure if the non-generic price varies but sofar i've only seen $20. Also, if you're currently paying for insurance, you have to switch to the school's. The only way you can keep yours is if you are on a parent or spouse's insurance.

Hello to my fellow classmates, i've noticed in a number of postings that the 2010 students keep telling us to relax and enjoy the summer yet we are still very wound up in details regarding being ready for that first day of school... i figured I would try and lighten the mood :)... what's everybody doing for the remainder of the summer until this 4 year study session actually begins? Vacations, beach hopping etc.?

My vacation just ended :( I was in Europe for a month, I had the time of my life. Once I find a place to live, I'm just going to relax, go to the beach conveniently located half a block away, and chill. Actually, my parents and my sister are both going to be gone for a couple weeks (they're going to seperate places, just at the same time) so I'll be all alone. Maybe I'll throw a huge party. My grandparents who live downstairs probably won't mind too much :D

Thank you for the info. KateGia.

No problem.... Also, just a tip, if you are staying on your parents insurance, and are from out of town, make sure there are doctors in the area. All students can go to the clinic for free, but if you need to see a specialist, you're not going to want to have to drivehome. I was going to stay on my parents' insurance, and i'm glad i didn't because since i've been at nycom i've had to go to 2 specialists, and my parents insurance doesn't have any doctors on long island.

Where in europe? I was in Italy for 11 days last summer and it was breathtaking. I'm on my way to the Galapagos in a month or so.

We just got rejected from Coop...the reason..we are too young. It was very nice coop apartment though, we dont have time to search what to buy and to be rejected again so we are looking to rent an appartment. I guess this is what I am going to be doing for two weeks, plus working. :) Not too much fun,but its ok. I am looking forward to start studying...Who else going to to DPC program with me??? :)

Where in europe? I was in Italy for 11 days last summer and it was breathtaking. I'm on my way to the Galapagos in a month or so.

We were in Madrid, Barcelona, Nice (with a night pretending to be rich and famous in Monaco), Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome (I've been to Florence and Rome before so didn't mind having less time there), Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, and Krakow.

It seems like a lot I guess, but it was so worth it. But I wished we spent more time in Prague, that place is gorgeous. Also seems like a strange itinerary I guess, but last summer, I did a 3 week Europe trip, so this trip, I went to most of the places I wasn't able to go last summer but really wanted to. And we flew from Rome to Berlin on Air Berlin, so it was quick and cheap.

Now, I really want to go to the Scandanavian countries. Really badly. But i guess that'll have to wait until I graduate medical school already. Summer between first and second year won't work because my best friend is getting married, and she's not allowing me to go in case I get run over by a bike again, only end up with more than scrapes and bruises and can't be in her wedding. I guess I can wait 4 years until my next trip :(

Greetings, newbs...err...I mean, the esteemed nycom class of 2011,

Is anyone interested in purchasing some used books?

I also have 2 years' worth of nycom powerpoints, old tests, and various other crap. I'd be happy to unload...err...I mean, pass them on to a future esteemed colleague.

:)

hey guys just wanted to let you know about available housing. i'm a male, 3rd year student

3 bedrooms available in a 4 bedroom house in westbury, ny. Rent is currently $450/month (but the landlord might increase it to $500 this year). Cable/internet/utilities usually adds up to $100/month at most. The house is in a quiet area and in walking distance to pharmacies, grocery shops, restaurants, bank, etc. Additionally the house is a 10-15 min drive to nycom at most. If interested, please email at [email protected]

whenever you buy anything online you may find the opportunity to enter a coupon code. Some people may do this already but whenever you buy online (hotels, trips, books, electronics, etc.) do a google search for the item or website and include "promo code" "promotion code" or "coupon" or "rebate". I've saved a lot of money buying books and electronics this way. You may have to go through a few pages to find a good code. Of course never pay for codes or give personal info for them and don't go clicking on all the links on those sites. Buying direct from the hotel website or book publisher could also save money. Sometimes more by using google to search.

Recently I saved $100 on a 5 night stay just by doing a search on "obitz promo code". I was so excited to see the $100 savings I missed the $150 code under it. :(

Think this deal expires mid July.

So I have a question- do you guys think that a 30 minute driving commute to campus is too much for a med student? I am looking at places in Queens and was wondering if I lived on the more west side of Queens would that be too much.

Also, I know I talked to someone at the housing department regarding living in Brooklyn and he said he wouldn't recommend that. But even with a car?

I guess I'm too used to driving long distances, but I want some input from people who know and are in the same situation before making a decision. God I can't believe I don't have an apartment yet!

hi there... i commute from franklin square which is about 5 minutes from the queens border...i haven't had any problems so far... takes me about 25 minutes without traffic and 35 or so with traffic..really don't mind it..

the only thing that sucks is test days...i get nervous there's gonna be an accident or road work, so i leave my house around 6:30 am for an 8 am test...end up sitting around for an hour before the exam

I live 22 miles east of NYCOM, with no traffic its 25 minutes but most days its more like 45 minutes. I like the drive, its my time where I'm not studying and I don't feel guilty about it. I normally rock out to the radio and relax a little bit. If you can get over the stress of traffic its fine.

People seem to be very sensitive about the whole commuting to medical school issue, and who knows, they may be 110% correct, but I'm going to be a first year this Aug. as well and I live in LI but VERY close to queens so I too have quite the commute ahead of me, 30-45min every morning. At the same time I'm also used to driving long distances, I commuted to High School an hour each way (not saying med school compares to HS but still). I really think it's all about what you're used to and what you're willing to put up with. If people are always used to dorming and walking to class then a 30 minute commute might be scary, but for those that are always used to it, I can't imagine it being THAT horrible. Although I will say, Brooklyn to NYCOM is a definite NO. That's my 2 cents on the situation and I'm sticking to it :)...hopefully it won't bite me in the a$$ once school comes around.

Absolutely don't commute from Brooklyn. I live in Brooklyn, and just got a place out in LI. I thought about it, and then I drove to NYCOM for my interview. It's just too long and if you take the Belt Parkway, there is always traffic.

Also, if you don't mind driving, 30 mins isn't bad. Me, I hate to drive, and I go crazy in traffic, so there is no wya I would do a 30 minute commute unless i had no choice. If it was 30 mins on the train, fine, but 30 minutes driving, every day, each way, forget it. Just keep in mind there could be traffic when you drive, so the 30 minutes might end up becoming longer.

Congrats to all who are in and good luck to those who are still waiting!!!
I commute from Brooklyn. Well, when classes were optional it was fine. Now that the classes are mandatory it will be a disaster. However, I have to say, if you are carpooling, it's still doable because you can study in the car. I am not moving to LI. There are 4 of us and we are all staying put in Brookyn. What will come out of it? Time will tell. By the way, my friend had moved to LI during his first semester and moved right back about 3 month into school. He hated LI. However, the decision is all yours because in order to get to class at 8, you have to get up at 5:45 am and in order to get home without traffic you must either leave school before 2:45pm or after 9pm. But I am staying in Brooklyn.

Wow, thanks for all the help! I would have been lost without all this advice. Yeah the commute from Brooklyn is longer than I expected it to be just because I thought going outbound there wouldn't be as much traffic.

Anyway, looks like I found a place 12 miles away from school in Bayside, Queens which will be about a 20 minute commute so that works out just fine by me. I'm not visiting the place beforehand because I live too far away, so let's hope it's not the size of a shoebox!

Do you have anybody who could visit it for you? I would just be really nervous, because sometimes, landlords might omit the bad parts of the apartment. We visited one place that sounded really nice. Duplex, 2 large bedrooms, basement, etc. We saw it, and there was water damage under the windows, and don't even get me started on the bathroom. I would have been afraid to shower in there. And the 2 large bedrooms? One was large, the other was about the size of a full size bed. You put the mattress in there, and that's it.

So really no one who can even see it for you? Friends, relatives, anyone who lievs in Queens?

Sounds like we visited that place too. IS it in LI???

Good luck to all you guys/gals. I'm from Staten Island and can't take the 1hr plus traffic of the LIE lol. I'm not going to be attending NYCOM but you guys should definitely stay close to the westbury area.

I'll be where there is no rush hour lol

Your apartment search experience does scare me into considering having someone look at it for me. Although, and this may sound really naive, the girl sent me numerous pictures of the 2 rooms, bathroom, and kitchen from multiple angles- altogether about 4/5 shots per room.

But, you're right, even so it might just be too much of a gamble. I'll work on getting my Manhattan-centric friends to make the trek to Queens!

Definitly work on it. I personally wouldn't believe photos, just because it's easy to hide something, and also photoshop. You can easily paint out some mold on the wall with a simple click of a button. I don't want to scare you, but I would just be really cautious about it, and would definitly try to have somebody you know to check it out for you.

hey sucke--um, new class people...

saw some posts about living stuff, thought i'd add my unsolicited $0.02. i live in Forest Hills, Queens, and am DPC so had to be at school every damn day last year, but it's been a great place to live. wouldn't have lived closer for the world, no matter a measely 20 min less commute. godawful 'burbs. anyway. Forest Hills is nice, convenient to the GCP and the LIE, has everything you need in walking distance (24 grocer, movie theaters, barnes and noble, starbucks, restaurants, etc.) and is only 20 min by express subway to the first manhattan stop. if your car breaks down, the LIRR is here, too, so you can still get to school. it's easy parking, easy drive to brooklyn for those hipster-inclined, and just generally a nice place to live. i like that school and home have been two distinct things, even if i study a lot even not at school. the mental separation was a lifesaver. i am, though, a "non-trad" and not one for massive isolating indoctrination type frattish living.

i laughed so hard i snarfed my bourbon out my nose...NYCOM give you something you can just as easily pay for on your own? hahahahaha! never!

also, funny how for an institute of technology how i had to partition my Mac to run as a PC so i can stream, and how lame our email system is. huh.

more bourbon, less typing. i know.

Trying to decide between tablet PC and traditional laptop. Are the lecture notes available to download before class? Ideally I would like to download the notes and be able to add in my handwritten notes and diagrams during lecture. Anyone out there using a tablet have any advice to offer?

The CORRECT notes that the lecturer will use is available for download about 85%-90% of the time. We had one professor notorious for making "last minute" changes in the slides and she knew we didn't like it too. LOL!

I used to study from the PC powerpoints and used to admire the tablet PC users. As time went on I found it easier to just use paper 80-90% of the time.

From the class of 2010 I know of at least 5 students in the Rego Park/ Forest Hills area. there is probably much more than that in the area and in all of Queens. We commute against rush hour traffic and have some options on the route we take to school which is nice. As was said by others you should know your personality: are you a commuter or not?

The restaurants/bars in Forest Hills do make me wish I was back in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. :( After all I am a gourmand. I cry every night I settle on T-Bone, Tower Diner, or the gourmet restaurant Applebees.

In my opinion, I would go for the regular laptop...its much easier just to write your notes on the actual powerpoint print outs, sometimes the handwriting on the tablets gets really messy and its just a hassle to have to go print it out later if you want, why do that when you can already have the printout with your notes handwritten onto them?
good luck!!

I just got my new laptop in the mail, and I love it. It runs so fast. And I don't understand all the hate about Vista. It's not that bad, but the user account control thing was majorly annoying, everytime I clicked on something, it would pop up, so I just disabled it.

Anyone else getting excited? It's almost here. In about a month, it'll be move in day, and then classes will start. Crazy. Does anyone, maybe from the class of 2010 know if we will need any medical equipment, like stethoscopes during first year, or can we wait to get them?

you can wait to get them. there will be a day with approved vendors at the school for the lecture kids, and the DPC kids have to buy a specific package (so DON'T buy equipment!!).

Are the approved vendors a better deal than if we buy the stuff from somewhere else on our own?

Are the approved vendors a better deal than if we buy the stuff from somewhere else on our own?

short answer: NO

Long answer:This was discussed a few times in this thread.

I only purchsed my cheap sphygometer (about $50 I think) and my littman cardio III stethescope ($147)from the vendors.

otoscope/opthalmoscope (about $120 total) I purchased from ebay as a pocket welch allyn set. reflex hammer and tuning fork was given to us by NYCOM. Don't lose these since that is about $25 worth of equipment! I purchased a small black bag from Target for about $15.

Some people used CVS or other drug stores to purchase cheap sphygometers and ebay or allheart.com for other equipment and scrubs.

Trying to buy the exact same items from another source to save money will be tough since the vendor does NOT charge for shipping or taxes. I think I had to wait a week to pick up my items that I purchased from the vendor so no convenience factor there. I wanted to be sure my stethescope was 100% legit so went with the vendor.

The vendor does not have battery powered pocket scopes. The cheapest set they have is about $500. Comparing my oto/opthalmoscopes to other more expensive scopes I don't see the advantage and most clinics will provide you with these scopes anyway.

If you want to get the pocket scopes off ebay you should start looking now if you want to get them cheaply. They are probably still a good deal if you can get both at $200.

Some people went ultra cheap and got nurse stethescopes. I have to draw the line somewhere though!

whatever you decide do some searches on SDN under "otoscope" "stethoscope" etc. so you will at least be more informed consumer. Listen to the vendor sales pitch/demo.

Noonday states DPC folks need specific equipment so don't get cute!

Very niiice :) I'm nervous because, despite the warnings and advice, I won't be able to have anyone check out my apartment for me. But on the flipside, my roommate (who I haven't met in person) is a resident who has been really friendly and more than helpful so I'm hoping she wouldn't knowingly screw me over.

Did you do your undergrad in Boston? I'm not from Boston, but I went to school there and worked for a bit afterwards.
