NYCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

Was the acceptance envelope small or large? I'm out of town and am thinking about asking someone to go to my house to check the mail but I don't want them to open it!

It was a large thin envelope, not the type that you get your credit card bills in.
 
Hey Everyone,

I interviewed at NYCOM this past week, and I LOVED it. I really, really hope I get in! The only con I see about NYCOM is....the cost. The financial aid handout with the tuition projections was scary!! I just need to hear from current students that the cost can be manageable, if you live solely on loans. My mom can't help me at all so the cost of attendance will be solely mine, along with around $55k for my undergraduate and MPH loans. Is it possible to live when you get out of medical school with close to $300k in loans?! I also hear murmurs of not being able to defer loans for residency anymore, although I don't know how much truth there is to it. I guess I just need some reassurance that the cost should not be a deterent because I LOVED NYCOM and I really hope to attend there. Thanks for any advice in advance!

NYCOM's tuition is pretty comparable to other private school tuitions. In another thread here someone posted a PDF with tuitions for other DO schools:

If money is your main concern, and if you get into your state school (DO or MD), then that would be your best bet. Hope this helps!

Describe large, I was informed by my friend that I received a decent size envelope from NYCOM. I dont really want her to open it, but then again I dont want to wait till wed morning to know:scared:
 
So, I interviewed with NYCOM on Nov 6th in the morning. I got my acceptance letter on Sunday, Dec 2nd. I guess Thanksgiving slowed everything up a bit (but they did tell us it would take a month). I think i'm gonna pay the deposit. I have also been accepted to LECOM, MSUCOM, and UNECOM. I personally didn't like LECOM... just wasn't my style. I absolutely loved UNECOM but i'm from NY and hope to get into NYC hospitals so NYCOM just seems like the right choice. Thought that would help some people with the time between interview and acceptance notification. 🙂

hey man congrats and thanks for sharing the timing between interview and acceptance! who knows? maybe we will be classmates! do you mind sharing what were your stats in terms of gpa/mcat/ec's? i'm interviewing on dec 11.

haha, don't worry about it, it will probably be an acceptance, if it is not an acceptance, then there is nothing wrong with that either, we all end up somewhere.

yeah, no prob. gpa = 3.4 overall (3.2 science and 3.6 nonscience, or something like that) 27 on the mcat (9 psci, 11 bio, 7 verbal). I do cancer research, very active in volunteer organizations, and clinical experience at a hospice and in a local hospital's ER

good luck on the interview! i'm sure you'll be fine. It was super laid back

Question to students who are already matriculated.... is anyone here doing the DO/MBA program in nycom? if so , how is it? where do you take your MBA classes? Do you graduate in 4 years?

I don't know how likely it is that I'll be sending a deposit. Are you people that got accepted going?

I'm sending in the deposit. NYCOM is my top pick of osteopathic schools. I have another interview at Virginia Commonwealth University in January, but i'm leaning toward osteopathic medicine over allopathic. I'm sort of looking forward to OMM lab the most
 
OMM at NYCOM is pretty great. We have a beautiful lab and a great department. The professors/doctors are all extremely helpful.

What exactly is beautiful about the lab? It just seemed like a room filled with tables.
 
It's a pretty new lab so all of the equipment is nice and new. It's also a big, bright, sunny room with lots of windows. When I was interviewing I saw some sad OMM labs (no adjustable tables, cramped space, no windows, etc.), so it makes me appreciate what we have at NYCOM even more. It definitely makes having to be in there every week for a couple hours that much easier.

ok now I am mad. why wasnt this mentioned in the letter? I thought I could wait till march or something...grrrr important things like this should have been written in big bold letters. NYCOM..you are upsetting me already😡

Ditto on this feeling as well. I interviewed just recently and I loved the OMM vibe. I'm crossing my fingers. I hope I get in! 😱

the admissions office told me it was a computer problem... they printed out the wrong letters or something like that
 
do you guys think that I have a shot at NYCOM given my stats (mdapps in my profile) and given that I applied super late?? note that I have a very strong upward trend as of recently and am on par to have near a 4.0 this semester....

so i interviewed today
but i am very confused
the lady who interviewed me wouldnt talk about anything else but my research experience

i felt like she was implying that i am better off doing a phD
but i kept emphasizing that research is somethin i do on the side, my main goal is to become a doctor
i am little worried now
she was dry
 
Same with my interview... all the lady wanted to talk about was research and my volunteer hours at the hospice. But i got in, and i'm sure you will too. Its still early on in their interview cycle.

on a separate note, i filled out all the paperwork to send in my deposit today. did anyone else get a little sick writing a check for $1500... i guess i should get used to 1) being broke and 2) spending money that i don't actually have haha

Yea, some people get one of those stress interviews, they are just measuring your ability to handle it:laugh: .

You guys were so somber in your dark suits as you walked into the library today :laugh:👍. It's so early in the application cycle for us that I imagine you all have a very good chance of getting in. Good luck all!
 
does anyone know what their student to cadaver ratio is? no one wants to give me a straight up answer to that question, which worries me.

they bombarded us with the financial aid lady at first
i thought that really dum of them
if you are trying to attract students, you talk about all the good things about the school first, its histroy and sucess and what it has to offer, not how much its gooing to cost, and you leave the cost to the end, after the tour

so the lady put us in depression

yea thats what they did to us on our interview day, they told us how much it is going to cost at the end of our tour. Still, the financial aid lady scared us alot.
 
Well apparently they didn't make a decision on me... I interviewed the first week and although everyone else is hearing back, I haven't gotten anything.... The problem is December 14th is next Friday and I have deposits due for my other acceptances.... nycom is my #1 right now and its really gunna burn to drop 1500 on ccom and then have nycom give me an acceptance a week later ahhhhhhhhh... I guess I will call early next week...

where do you live? I am guessing those who live very close to school heard back first- the way regular mail works. why can't they e-mail everyone... it is easier.
 
Bitterpill: 8 students per cadaver. The way that lab is set is that half of the class is in there at a time (150 people or so) and each lab group is divided into 2 groups of 4. For each lab, 4 of us are dissectors (have to be there by 9) and 4 of us are peer learners (have to arrive by 1030). And we switch off for each lab so we all dissect equal amounts of time. It is a pretty good system; when you dissect you're not crowded since only 4 of you are there and when you don't dissect you either have a free morning or can catch some sleep.

Everyone was friendly, it was a pleasant experience, no need to be nervous.

Advice?: be curious and ask good questions and also be careful about what you say before your interview , or with people who will show you around, I think how you act your entire interview day counts, not just the 20 minutes they talk with you in your interview.
 
I got a letter back in October saying that the school would be sending out interview invites starting in November. I haven't gotten an invitation or a rejection yet, but I don't know what to think.

I was just accepted at NSU-COM, but I would like to know about the rest of my schools that I applied to... you know?

YUP, this school looks fantastic. But growing up in big cities and living in one now...the idea of suburbia freaks me out...........
 
I have an interview next Tuesday...nervous..:scared: I hope i won't say anything stupid😱

Wow they changed that from last year. It was still 8 students per cadaver with half the class there at a time, but we all were there from 9-12. If you wanted to dissect you could, or if you wanted to just watch/study you could do that too. I liked having 8 people per body because after a month into it the thrill was gone for me and I didn't want to cut anymore and the real gunners of the group got to do all the cutting which made them very happy. It worked well for all of us. I guess the new way works well too though.
 
so, i got a snail mail about sending my reference letters. Is it their usual thing for everyone who applies? I thought it was an outright rejection since envelope was so thin. I almost got little upset before I read the darn thing. :meanie:
 
When I called a few months ago to verify that they had received everything they need from me, I was told that I'd get a letter if they were missing anything.
