NYCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I feel the same...lecture-based all the way! The letter says that you have two weeks to transfer out/in of DPC once the fall semester starts, but doesn’t everybody (DPC and Lecture) start together for the first few months of classes? I wonder how they expect students to decide in such a short amount of time 😕

DPC and LDB are together for the first system which is called Fundamentals of Osteopathic Medicine. After Fundamentals is over, LDB and DPC are only together for Anatomy and OMM Lab + Lectures.

would anyone in the DPC track mind giving some feedack?

Hey boys and girls, I have a quick question I need to post in a public forum because if this question is left in my head I may die:

I have been Accepted to both UNECOM and NYCOM. I was on ASA for the class of 2011, reapplied and was then accepted for the Class of 2012. I interviewed in January of '08 at NYCOM and recently recieved acceptance into their DO Program. I am going to present my list of pros and cons of each school. If you wish to comment please do, I just need to get this off of my chest.

First off, money is not really an issue, I will be using loans to pay for everything. Medical school is expensive (UNE and NYCOM ~ 37K), this we all know too well, but each school brings with it a different education.

UNE
-Wonderful Faculty, Students, and Alumni (<- For you Wook) which make UNE seem more like a family than anything else. This provides a supportive learning environment in which anyone can excel
-Small Class size
-Superb facilities, 4 ppl to a cadaver, complete dissections, Amazing OMM lab, lecture halls, note taking service, (?Robotic patient simulator?) etc.
-Beautiful location, its on the ocean for pete's sake! How could anyone not like that locale?!
-Low cost of living. This is a large factor for me, I am from upstate NY (being an ISS or OSS has no bearing on my medical school choice) with biddeford and portland nearby, plus skiing and hockey abound I can balance out the streeses of medical school with relaxing, recreational activities

BUT

-Not affliated with the large teaching facilities like those of NYCOM, not quite sure about UNE's clinical reputation
-Relatively small alumni network
-In a rural setting which subconsciously promotes rural and PC medicine
-I am an EM freak and NYCOM has an EM department as part of the school
-The Issue of Biochem course which is now at the forefront of the UNE forum (I am paying for a great education yo!)
-No support network

NYCOM
-Excellent clinical rotation within the heart of the NYC/NJ/CT metro Area
-Technology abound! Streaming video of lecture as well as OMM
-ICC and Robotic patients first and second year
-Beautiful location on Long Island
-Vast Alumni Network
-Local Support network (4 cousins and aunt and uncle in NYC area)

BUT

-Cost of living on the Island is unheard of, and queens isn't much better
-Large students:cadaver ratio
-Students seen during my interview were not very welcoming, unlike those at UNE
-General dissarray of the admissions department (I scheduled and Interview in december for January 24th, on January 14th I get a letter from the AD saying my application is being thrown out because I have not taken action, very shoddy for a medical school)
-Mandatory attendance, not a big negative but I study best away from lecture

These are just a few musing, If I have missed anything please correct me by either replying or PMing me. My knowledge of UNE has dwindled seeing the last time i was there was march 2007.

I am not asking you to sway me in any direction, just point out the pros and cons I have missed and your opinion of what I've stated. Thanks for your help!!!

I was in a similar situation as you. I was accepted at NYCOM, UNECOM, MSUCOM, LECOM, and TOURO-NY. I ultimately decided to put my deposit in at NYCOM because of the technology, hospital affiliations, and alumni network -- not to mention that i only live 45 minutes from NYCOM so i know the area better than biddeford (although Maine holds a special place in my heart and i would love to live there). One thing I have to disagree with you about is the students at NYCOM... I found them to be extremely nice and extremely friendly. following my interview a group of students walked up to me and asked me how my interview went (you kind of stick out when you're wearing a suit) and offered to give me another tour of the campus since mine was sort of rushed. I also liked that the student body was diverse at NYCOM... lets face it, theres a lot of white people in Maine and if you plan to work in a big city, thats just not realistic.

Exactly. That is why I chose NYCOM over UNECOM. For me, the only negative about NYCOM is the cost of living. Maybe the student to cadaver ratio, but I think I can deal with that. 🙂

The student to cadaver ratio really isn't that big of a deal. Remember that NYCOM does anatomy along with it's systems (not as an individual thread). The 1st years just had their last anatomy lab this past week. The first few labs everyone is gung-ho about cutting and doing all the work. After that, most people don't want to do it, so if you really do, you'll be able to do as much as you want. Also, even though there is a high ratio, there are a ton of students, which still means there are a ton of cadavers. If you go in at night to review, you definitely have a wide variety to look at. I did most of my anatomy learning outside of the assigned lab time, and ususally there were no more than 15 other people in the lab at the time (often my bf and i were the only ones), so we had our choice ~35 cadavers to look at. Plus, the way they split up the lab now (and a 1st year can correct me if i'm wrong, because it was different for us) 4 people cut, then the other 4 come in, and the 1st 4 teach you what they did, then leave, and you can review it with just for, then the next lab, it switches. That way there are only 4 people at a body at any given time.

👍

After the first month, most groups end up with 1 or 2 people who REALLY like to cut and will do the dissection. Spending 2 hours cutting away fat and fascia isn't really that fun . Everyone else isn't really that interested in cutting. From 9:00am to 10:45ish only one group of 4 is there, after that the 2nd group shows up and learn from the first group. It's really pretty efficient.

I don't suppose I can push back the date the $1,500 deposit is due? I have a few places I would prefer that I have not heard from yet.

Never thought i'd be happy to loose 1500 dollars but hey.

Neways i'll be giving up an acceptance to NYCOM. One of the best DO programs out there and congrats and goodluck to those who are accepted and still applying.

Does NYCOM notify you when they've recieved your AACOMAS, or do you have to wait to see if you will get a secondary/interview?

hey did anyone accepted have similar stats as me (3.63 overall 3,42 science gpa 26o mcat 10p9b7v)? I am so stressed waiting for an interview. They are my first choice. I recently got that mcat score in January ( got a 22r first time). I am a ny resident and live 10 minutes away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I heard only half their class is filled up. Did everyone send a DO recommendation?

I applied early, interviewed and accepted in December.

3.357 overall
2.968 science
26Q 10p8V8b
yes, i sent a DO recommendation.
i'm not sure how much of the class is filled up, but I know that NYCOM interviews pretty late into the season so good luck.

thank you... good luck in nycom. They have an amazing match list....

I'm currently going to NYIT (where NYCOM is located) for its Doctorate of Physical Therapy program, and am also applying to NYCOM for fall '08 (as well as other schools). Is there anyone else who also goes to NYIT? Just wondering!

BTW I do agree with what people are saying, that the campus is beautiful, facilities are great, and students are diverse. The cadaver labs can be crowded (partly because they share the lab with us PTs sometimes), but you can find lots of downtime.

We never dissected at the same time as the PAs and other programs. There are a lot of people in there but every other body belongs to the opposite group so there is plenty of space.

AACOMAS Application verified and sent today! Those of you who were interviewed at NYCOM, how long after your AACOMAS did you recieve a secondary in the mail? Wish me luck!

Yikes, very late in the cycle. I received my secondary a month after.

I submitted primary in october and got one letter saying they got it and I haven't heard a word since, not even reply to an email. 🙁

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if anyone from the 2/21/08 Interview group heard anything from adcoms.

I also need advice from anyone who can provide me with any...my interview lasted 10 minutes and I'm weary about why it lasted so short.

My interviewer was nice. She asked me what I knew about Osteopathic medicine, who I look up to, and what my strengths and weaknesses were.

I took her on a journey of how I ended up where I am today.

We chuckled at how expensive Starbucks coffee is, since I worked there as a Store Manager, and she was drinking from a Dunkin Donuts cup.

I asked her two questions, one about the DO/MBA program and the Mentor Project at NYCOM but she didn't have specific information about the programs.

Has anyone had a short interview and felt the same way - and got accepted? or rejected? My counterparts in the group had interviews that were 25min long. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! paranoia!!!

wow, thanks for the reply!

were you interviewing that day too? or are you already a student?

Congrats!!! Are you psyched? Or has it all settled in already for ya?

After a long while, it has settled.
I am still excited about starting medical school though.

Has anyone been asked questions that you didn't expect or weren't prepared for? I just got an interview invitation in the mail today!

Also, for the supplemental app, should I leave the "Osteopathic physician who is recommending you" line blank since I don't have one?

I interviewed in January. I got a call the next day. I was so excited but now I feel like it didn't happen. So wierd.

I interviewed at NYCOM on Feb 27th and loved it! The students were so enthusiastic, the campus was beautiful, and their facilities/technology were amazing. They told us we will hear between 1 and 4 weeks, ahh I can't wait any longer! Everyone keep your fingers crossed crossed for me😀

About a week and a half after my primary was processed, NYCOM gave me an interview Invite. I hope all goes well

when was your primary processed? I am still waiting on them. I got my new mcat score monday and sent it to them tuesday of last week. haven't heard anything since. I got a 22r my first time (9b9p4v). were your stats similar to mine 3.63overall gpa, 3.42 sci and my second mcat is 26o(10p9b7v). I cant sleep anymore lol, have yet to receive an acceptance from a DO school.

Hey buddy, my primary was processed Feb 7th. Don't loose hope just yet, they do tend to interview till the end of April, maybe even May and since you sent in your second MCAT (which is pretty good for NYCOM) I'm sure they will look at your application again. Hey, at least they didn't reject you just yet. I went to Cornell, Overall of 3.6, science of 3.5, 27 MCAT. A lot of research, did a research honors thesis, was an EMT for 3 years, and some good LORs. Also I'm instate. I'm also waitlisted at a US MD school now, but I was waitlisted last year and i didn't get in. Thus, this year I applied to the DO schools as well. Again, your second MCAT score is something that get your application a second glance at and I really hope you get an interview at NYCOMs.

Hey

I hope this information helps you but my primary was completed in October (10/21/07), Interview Invite in February (2/05/08), Interview on (2/21/08) and awaiting a decision. My mcat breakdown is exactly the same as yours (26O, 10p/9b/7v) and my GPA as an undergrad is overall is 3.83, science 3.85, and my graduate GPA is 3.73.

I worked for Starbucks for 5 years while studying, went into management for 2 years after graduating, became an EMT, and while TAing, finishing my Masters in Chemistry this May with a publication and NIH grant in the works for my research in catechol synthesis. I am currently working for the NYC DOE as well as a consultant.

peterish...I left it blank if this helps, but I don't know what the outcome of my interview is. Has anyone been accepted without the DO recommendation letter?

I hope this helps you guys cause everyone has been very supportive of me here.

who's ready for ssbb??????? lol

hi everyone.

its my top choice and im almost thinking about writing a letter of intent.
any help/comments are appreciated. thanks.

Anyone have any idea when the next adcom meeting is?

I'm between LECOM and NYCOM and there is something I need to know to make my decision...

For clinicals/rotations, they send you to different hospitals... I heard they can be in different states. Is this true? Where are some states/hospitals that students are sent to??

I know for LECOM it can be halfway across the country (PA to Florida!), so this could be a big factor.

Thanks.

Most of the rotations are in NY. There is one in the albany area, some in buffalo, kingston, Binghamton, one place in PA, Some in Jersey, and CT. A lot of these are taken by people from those areas who'd like to spend some time at home, but there is a chance you'd end up with one, even if undesired.

NYCOM's clinicals are, for the most part, done in the NYC/Long Island area. Here's a list of our hospitals:

http://iris.nyit.edu/~nycomec/

There are some students who do clinicals in New Jersey or Buffalo. I am not sure how many exactly go, so maybe a 2nd yr or higher can clarify it 🙂

I would also like to know when the next adcom meeting is... anyone??

I thought that they pretty much allow you to choose your clinical rotation/sites. Can anyone clarify?

I'm still waiting to hear back, its been awhile since my primary was completed (at least 2 months) and I haven't hear anything. I got the letter saying I was complete but should I call them just to make sure?

I'd love to go there, I live about a 20 min drive from there so it would be perfect for me. (not to mention that I have a friend who went there and he loved it)

There are regional rotations (where you would be in one hospital or group of hospitals for all of 3rd year) which you apply for and interview and stuff. If you don't do that, you rank all the rotations based on which hospitals you want, and there is a lottery (all done by the computer). For 4th year you're more on your own.

Any current NYCOM students out there late application success stories??

I will be one hopefully 😀
Interview on Tuesday!!!!🙂😱😱
