It might be interesting to see what they screened for. I.e., a certain minimum gpa, total mcat, nothing lower than __ in any one section, etc. But a good number of people who got both secondaries and pre-secondary rejections would have to be willing to post their stats. It might help people decide whether to bother applying there this cycle (if they haven't already) and especially next cycle.

I got the same email as EBizzle, saying that they will be sending secondaries in a week, which is weird since why don't they just send the secondary directly? So I don't know if I'm getting a secondary or not.
GPA 3.78, MCAT 40, OS

I don't know, I think that even 3 rejections to 1 secondary is a little optimistic. Wake just isn't dishing out any love.

Well this is a rejections thread, the mood is supposed to be gloomy. I got the email telling me to check my status on the website. I had that same "your application is under review, we will contact you if we want anything else" status on their website for two days. today it switched to "youre getting a secondary, give us two weeks to email it to you." OOS.

This is true. However, non-rejectioners browse this thread too and so we're just trying to get an idea based on the info we have at hand.

I received the secondary today- I've heard that Wake is careful to screen out people with scores below a 10 in a section- just a rumor though

Ok, this is weird. I got the rejection from Wake on Wednesday. Now, a few minutes ago, I just got a secondary invite. I'm getting mixed signals here.

Got the same email from Wake to check status online and it just says that an email will be sent out.....not a good sign.

Also got rejected from University of Nebraska (7/20)-OOS
VCU (7/21)-they decided "not to pursue your file any further",
Indiana (7/25)-OOS (I think)

I'm a CA resident, average GPA and MCAT. Verified 7/10.

I'm not sure the rumor is accurate. I know a few people who applied to Wake this cycle with less than 10 in one section and they got secondaries. They're OOS too.

Sorry to hear. Good luck with your other schools.

I've heard the big thing screening-wise at Wake is no less than an 8 in verbal. Could be/probably am wrong, but the 10 in each section sounds closer to reality...

Also, they sent out some "official" secondary invites today via email. If anyone's waiting, the app isn't time-intensive at all.

Good luck...

I'm not sure what the reasoning is.. Got a 12 in verbal.. no luck here lol

What are the chances of getting an interview if wakes actually sends the secondary?

I interviewed there last year and if I recall correctly something like 60% of people who get the secondary end up getting an interview

I think we also need to remember that they might not screen on GPA/MCAT, but also on other things. For example, for all we know, they could be screening people without clinical experience on their AMCAS or without research. Or maybe they only want people who speak a foreign language, or something. Based on the info I've seen here and heard from other applicants, there doesn't seem to be a cut and dry stats-only approach at work there.

I am procrastinating from physics, so I shall peruse a few MDapps profiles to see if there might indeed be a GPA/MCAT combination in use, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

I myself doubted whether I should apply to Wake for quite a while (because of the screening deal), and eventually decided to apply - however, my app is not verified yet, so no word from them.

me too! what the hell? 😕

OK, I'm looking at those who have received an interview (so obviously, submitted secondary), and OOS, since I'm OOS myself - sorry to exclude the ISers :hardy:

Minimum MCAT is 22 (next highest is 27, though)
Maximum MCAT is 42 🙂eek🙂
Average MCAT is 33.5 based on appx 90 profiles (didn't have the stamina for more)

GPA for OOS:
minimum 2.85 (with 32 on the MCAT)
maximum 4.0 (d'oh :hardy:)

Average GPA based on 58 samples: 3.60

I think these data confirm that even if there IS screening based on stats, these stats are not the only thing they are looking at. I thought a certain range of MCAT/GPA combos was desired, but there were both extremely high and extremely low combos (from 56 to 82).

Just got a secondary from Wake, but also got rejected from Case Western today lol.

MCAT was in the low 30s with a 3.75 Science GPA if this helps anyone

you got rejected post-secondary, right? How soon after submitting your secondary did you get rejected?

I suppose I've been rejected from Wake too. I've been trying to log in for days to no avail, and I just got in today and it says, "You will be receiving notification of your application status by e-mail." Since some of you have gotten a status message recently that the secondary will be sent in about two weeks, I'm assuming that my message means a rejection when the mass rejection email goes out. Bah humbug. I do have an 8 in PS, so perhaps that was my flaw.

About a week, they haven't sent out my rejection letter yet, it's dated Aug. 10th. But I just checked my status online and what I'm assuming is the letter that I'm going to get in the mail said I was rejected. Oh well, Cleveland sucks away 🙂

I don't think Wake screens strictly by the MCAT.
Last year when I applied to Wake, I got the secondary with 6 on VR. (eventually got rejected), and this year I got it with 8 on VR.
There must be something else in their screening. (I'm not NC resident and don't have any ties to the state either)

Im sure i will be posting in this thread soon. Im getting depressed just reading this. This is a good time to pull out the keg of moonshine. Is there a limit to the number of schools you can apply to?So that i can start doing overtime.!Thank God for Island schools.Im gonna be in someone's class next year. Even if its Univ of Pluto school of Medicine Ya heard!!
What exactly is "ties to the state"?

Just got a letter of rejection from Morehouse for no specific reason. By the special grace of God, that's the only rejection I'm getting.

Then what do you think it is? I've got a 30 and a 3.7. And a grad degree. And I'm OOS. I figured it was the 8 in PS because I don't really see what else would be so objectionable in my primary. I've got community service, clinical experience, some research, etc. Ah, wait. Maybe my age? I'm over 30. Could that be it? Otherwise, I really have no idea what they're looking for in a primary.

Anyway, I'm all for screening. Nice of them to save me $100. It would just be nice if they posted what their general screening criteria were on their web site. Like Miami and a couple of other schools. Why be so mysterious? Yikes, now I'm getting worried that there really is something objectionable in my primary. I was told my personal statement was excellent by the pre-health committee. Hrm....

Well, I'm guessing a couple of things. Whether the applicant would be a good 'fit' for the mission of the school (area around Winston-Salem is pretty rural) or whether he/she is a re-applicant (which usually means he/she likes the school). There is no way they rejected you (if it's official) solely based on your MCAT or your age. Wake traditionally has been a Baptist institution, and the fact that I'm a Christian and my activities around church might have helped a little. I'm totally guessing. Wake's screening is just so random...

I got the wake secondary about a week ago. 8VR 12PS 11BS 3.96/3.96

Wake apparently uses a formula, just judging from MDApplicants - (10 X GPA) + MCAT = score. The cutoff seems to be somewhere around a 69 (with a few 68's) and above given a secondary.

This is interesting considering that Wake's past MCAT averaged just over 30 with about a 3.60 average gpa, for a score of 66.

The questions are presented as to whether Wake is trying to bump up stats for rankings purposes, trying to get a cushion for legacies, or simply thinks the majority of these applicants will actually attend WFU if offered admission. Their grasp may not equal their reach.

wait i'm lost...your status says they're no longer reviewing your application??

Sorry to hear about that. I applied there too, but haven't heard anything as of yet. Did they notify u via email or snail mail?

When you log in to check your status there is a message center at the bottom of the page, and it said that I had a message. The message was the rejection letter.

Got the Wake rejection
OOS
3.59 GPA
37R MCAT (12/13/12)

I got an Indiana rejection to keep my Wake rejection company.

On the bright side (I think this thread needs more happy feelings), I got secondaries from both EVMS and VCU despite my crummy stats (3.35 and a 30) and OOS status. Keep the faith people!

got rejected by Case Western too. For vermont, i'm in the pool for interview invites.

wouldn't it be fun if the wake people were following this thread and f*cking with ya?

I'm still waiting for my wake pre-secondary rejection. They've really been stringing this one along. I've had horrendous problems logging on to see my status over the past two weeks, but noticed last week that it said I would be emailed my status shortly. Then, silence. I called wake today and asked the woman when I should be receiving this email update, and she said probably sometime this week. She said they recently upgraded their system and have been having lots of problems. I asked if getting that interim status note about getting emailed your real status eventually meant a pre-secondary rejection, and she said most likely. Way to be definite.

I would appreciate it as an applicant if they could just quit with all of this ambiguous status page mumbo jumbo and just email you your pre-secondary rejection or a secondary invite like most schools do. They're making this way too complicated and drawn out for a pre-secondary rejection. Sheesh.

Well, the ones of us that were rejected first-batch received our rejections Wednesday of last week. Look for you shiny new present in your inbox tomorrow, say 8ish.

I'm right there with you.. except I have 3 to keep each other company lol.. add case to that list

Well, I can now officially post in this thread. As suggested, I got the rejection via email this morning. I have a 3.78 gpa, a 30 MCAT and am non-trad with a grad degree. No good to pass the pre-secondary screen at Wake apparently:

"Our Committee on Admissions has carefully considered your application to The Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Since we realize that fixed selection criteria can eliminate an otherwise qualified applicant, your application was individually reviewed and evaluated. Because of the competitive qualifications of our applicants, we sincerely regret that we will be unable to accept your application this year."

The fact that they mention that my "application was individually reviewed and evaluated" and wasn't just rejected based on stats alone does sting a little. What, they didn't like my personal statement? My community service? Hmpf. Less information from them would have been nicer for a pre-secondary rejection.

Sorry to hear it, phoenix1. Good luck with your other applications.

Thanks, saqrfaraj. I'm not too bummed about the rejection, but I am a wee bit concerned that there is something unsavory in my app that I don't realize is there. I would have been happier if they said I didn't meet their MCAT stats or something. Hopefully they're just being fickle, and it's not a sign of things to come (i.e., rejections clear across the board).

you can't look at it that way, especially with wake. they've rejected gobs of people so far, even ridiculously qualified candidates (if you don't believe me, go look at mdapps). only wake knows what they want down in wake. you'll be fine.

Oh look...a Wake rejection in my inbox! 🙁 Oh well, I'm not too bummed I guess. Rejection's already stamped on my forehead from last cycle...

alumni here and wake handed me my ass last cycle...not even a secondary.

Got the Wake rejection
OOS
3.59 GPA
37R MCAT (12/13/12)

I saw that and said "****!" Makes me feel better about the lovely Wake rejection that was in my inbox today.

Not that I truly care...I had no intention of applying to the school but my dad made me. Now I can tell him, "I told you so!"

(anybody else frankly a little relieved that it's one less secondary to fill out? I'm swamped and feeling a bit overwhelmed with the whole thing...)
