I just received an invitation for an interview at Penn State. I missed the call, but I should be getting in contact with the professor by tomorrow. I'm very excited!

Was the Penn State interview for clinical? If so, what track?

Congrats!

Thanks DuckyGirl, the Penn State interview invitation is for Clinical Psychology child track. The interview for Penn State is scheduled for Feb. 22 and 23. I just spoke with the professor who called me and she told me that about 17 people have been invited. I am not sure if this is in total for both days or for one day or if more students will be invited.

I'm a grad student at Baylor so if anyone's applying for Clinical Psych here, our interview dates are at the end of Feb. beginning of March. We're usually one of the last schools to send out interview invites because our deadline's not untill Jan 2nd.

Good Luck to everyone.

I really liked the Baylor program when I was looking. I wouldn't move to Texas otherwise.....as the critters and whatnot of Texas skeeve me out. You know how they say, "Everything is bigger in Texas"....they aren't kidding!! :scared::scared:

Received an invite via email to University of Kentucky. Dates Feb 14-15
Clinical program

I just received an email invitation from UConn for the clinical psychology program-child track....this is very exciting news! Interviews will be held Jan 30 and Feb 13.

hi, it is possible for the listings of the schools that have extended interviews to be listed alphabetically????? it would make the schools easier to find on the list. just a thought. thanks for putting together this listing. take care, heartsteps

Ummm, they are listed alphabetically 😕

has anyone heard back about interview invites from Stony Brook yet? I found the following information listed on the main list...

State Univeristy of New York at Stony Brook (Clinical Psychology PhD, phone interview on 12/26/07, in person interviews 1/9 and 1/14 - possibly other dates as well)

...phone interivew on 12/26 and in person early/mid Jan?? they sound awfully early!

oh no!!! this is making me super nervous. >.<

I thought the due date was 15 Dec 2007. Wow, maybe they've figured out the potential candidates really fast. It's kinda depressing to find this out.

rukahs, this doesnt necessarily mean that everyone that will be offered interviews have been contacted yet. its always helpful to keep in mind that

1. all schools are different with their process of inviting - some send mass emails either from a secretary or the director, some faculty send emails to invite you, some faculty call you, some faculty want to talk to more students then they will even invite, and ive heard some schools even might accept students just on phone interviews (im specifically speaking toward clinical psych phd programs)
2. all faculty members work differently - related to above, some take more time and effort into the process. and, people are on different schedules so depending on the school's process and the faculty's time availability, some people can hear a lot earlier for the same school.
3. that all being said, some schools are even willing to do second round interviews.

this is my second time around and i know the anxiety very well, so i offer you what i tell myself when i try to rationalize!!

rukahs,

i applied to stony brook as well [it's one of my top choices] and had a freak-out when i saw the school added. however, my friend just graduated with her phd from there and she said that when she was accepted she just got a letter of acceptance - no interview whatsoever. obviously that was about 7 years ago so things may have changed, but i'm willing to bet that each POI does their interviews/acceptances differently at stony brook.

I also had a friend who applied to stonybrook, got the phone interview, and never heard from them again...until about April/end of March when someone called her (don't remember if it was a prof or secretary) saying that she was admitted to the program.

Apparently a lot of the people who were initially offered admission end up turning down their offers, so Stonybrook definitely plows through their wait list.

Thankyou everyone who had posted a reply for my post. It is true that I am a bit anxious, but your comments really encouraged me alot. I wish yall luck! Thanx again 🙂

You have another 2 or 3 weeks before you really need to start freaking out. At that point, if you have no interviews by the end of January, I would consider that a bad sign. Still there will be a few offers in the first weeks of February.

If you know invites are out, then by all means, call and check on the status of your application. What is the worst that is gonna happen, they reject you? I know that at CU-Boulder when I called the program director was stunned that I didn't get an interview, she found the answer for me... "Not a good fit." Yep, that's all I got, but it was extremely valuable information. I heard that time and time again, my next time around I was a far better fit and had the interviews to prove it.

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyways. umm, I'm asking for a friend :bullcrap:

Anyways, if I know invites are out for a school I applied to and I want to call and check the status of my application because I didn't get an invite, who/what do I ask? Can I just talk to the department secretary or should I call my POI? Do I ask if all the invites have gone out and specifically why I didn't get an interview invitation? Is this going to piss them off?!

You should only check/ call to see if your application was entirely received. Calling or writing to ask why you did not receive an invitation for an interview is idiotic. The school or professor will just tell you some standard song and dance line about having many qualified applicants and not everyone could be invited. As Markp stated, it is still early so just sit back and wait. If you get an interview and then do not hear back, it makes sense to call to see if you are wait listed or still being considered.

I disagree. I know lots of people (myself included) who heard no good news until April.

There's really no need to freak out until April 15th.

RayneeDeigh,

Markp is discussing interviews. I think he is right in saying that most interviews go out near the end of January through the beginning (first few weeks) of February. So it is still early for many places. There are actual interviews which occur even in March but the invites have already gone out before that. So not hearing about interviews, especially when others on SDN Psychology are posting the interview dates, is not a good sign. Acceptances and waitlists, which you had (correct?) go out later - your April 15th date.

Yes I know that.

I was just saying that there's no need to "freak out" about it. I spent February in bed because I thought not getting an interview was the worst thing in the world because someone told me that. If someone can be spared that stress and keep a positive outlook until April, I think that's a good thing.

Hey Raynee. 🙂 I think what happened to you is quite rare, and the vast majority of people who don't interview at any schools in January or February don't get acceptances out of the blue in March and April. GiantSteps and I aren't telling people to abandon all hope, but it would make sense to prepare for other things (start thinking about or looking for R.A. jobs, for instance) if you don't hear about interviews by mid-February.

I think it can vary a LOT depending on the school. Check out the websites for the schools you are applying to - some say approx when invites will be going out (though some are annoyingly silent...). For example, the school I'm at openly states that invites don't go out til late Feb. and interviews are in mid March. I would say this is one of the late schools, but just do some research on your schools before you freak out. If you have lots of Jan.15 deadlines, you've got quite a bit of time yet!

hi everyone, i just received my first interview invite this morning via email from my POI at Kent State 🙂. There are 2 dates, one of which is 2/8-2/9. This is for the Clinical Psych PhD.

Good luck to everyone this week! Hopefully this will be an exciting week for all!

me too! (except I got a phone call) See ya there!

Has anyone heard anything or applied to U of Houston or Virginia Commonwealth?

I got an email from Univ of Miami Florida (health clinical psych) for an interview Feb 1-2.

I am so excited 😀
I applied to Miami's adult track- does anyone know if there has been an interview date set for that?

Sorry guys, I have to agree with Raynee here.

You are going to make people unnecessarily nervous about getting an interview in the next 17 days, which is slightly unrealistic.

I didn't receive my interview invites last year until mid-February. There are plenty of programs that don't interview people until March and therefore don't invite before February. You guys are right about the really competitive programs; most of the time, they will have had their invites out early because they want to snag applicants competitively. You are also right that if one applied to a school that has already sent out all their invites, one's chances are really quite slim. But for all the people who are top-notch competitors for the best programs, they aren't the ones worried about hearing about an interview by the end of January. Why? Because most of those kinds of applicants already have several interview invites (or will in the next few days), and so they have little to worry about.

The kind of applicants your comments will affect are most likely the ones like myself that are not the number one picks of several schools- we get selected off the waitlists and are extended a few, less-desirable invites and receive lots and lots of disappointing emails and letters regarding our status as, alas, rejected. We aren't necessarily the lazy applicants (we work hard, too), we aren't necessarily the less gifted applicants (we can't all have 1550 GREs), but we want to go to graduate school just as much as applicants who receive 7 interviews and 5 funding package options to go with their admission offers.

I think Raynee's point was that it's a little early to start worrying so many people, and I agree. It is totally possible to get invites later in the game than is desirable. Let us not forget what a difficult time this is and that many of us are just holding out hope for a program or two, even if we applied to 20 schools. For all of you who are still waiting for interview invites, we still have time, and there is still hope.

No, it's a good question, as others have said it's appropriate to make sure your application package was complete and was evaluated. The Graduate School secretary (aka God) will know if your application was considered complete (and therefore considered.) If it was, then sit back and hold tight, hope for the best and expect the worst if you know invites have gone out.

If after April 15th passes and you have not gotten any acceptances or interviews, then it would be appropriate to discuss what exactly went wrong so that you can improve your chances for next year. There is nothing wrong with asking for input and assistance after the dust has settled. I did this and was rewarded with tons of valuable input regarding my failure to gain acceptance my first time around. Hopefully you won't find yourself in that place.

One thing to not do is accept somewhere you really don't want to go. You really need to want to go there. This is hard enough when you do want to be there. It would be really tough going to be somewhere you are not 100% excited about going to. Had I gotten accepted at the one of the two programs I interviewed at my first time around I would have missed out on a life altering opportunity.

Mark

PS - There is no need to stress this early in the process. Hell some schools still have deadlines open!

Just a thought, we are not all waiting for interviews to PhD programs and we are not all waiting for interviews to PsyD programs but this thread is for both. This may have something to do with who is giving what advice, asking what questions, waiting for different schools, and the timing of it all.

I know I said this before, but doing this a second time, I truly believe that each school, each program, each faculty is different. Its great to take advice from others on this website, but just like any other advice youve gotten over the past several months or several years, know who gives you the advice and know that every person has their own biases.

Yes, chances are that MOST people will hear about interviews by the first week or so of February. But thats most not everyone. And because this process is just not quite usual, things happen....

Its hard to stay positive, (unless you miraculously already have several interviews) thats a given!!

Here is a thought and any feedback is much appreciated.

Since the big SPSP conference is in late February (21-24); is it possible that some programs may want to look at applicants after this--especially the social personality programs? Perhaps they might extend invites at the end of this month or early Feb---then interviews in March?

What do you all think?

btw: I agree with RND! 😉

SPSP is Feb 7-9, I'm gonna be there. Just finished my poster. 🙂

just a quick question..where would i find the list of schools that has been posted on this thread? is there a link where the list is separately compiled?

also..if one is asked to do a prescreening phone interview before the actual in-person interview, are all other applicants invited to the interview (by the same poi at the least) usually asked to do the same? i.e. im curious about the purpose of this procedure..

Got an interview from Maine - POI emailed and then called. Dates are Feb 11th or 25th--your choice (although she said those dates weren't quite set in stone)

It's the very first post of this thread (page 1). I go back and edit that post as new invites come in.

Mark,
That is really good advice. I misunderstood one of your previous posts and thought you were suggesting to call now for an interview status check. I didn't know people did that. That's where my confusion was. And I definitely agree that when you decide to accept an offer some where, you need to REALLY want to be there. But it'll be hard to turn down an offer that I'm unsure of if it's my only one! I hope none of us here are faced with that decision! btw, I've read some of your previous posts, and your program sounds AWESOME!

But it'll be hard to turn down an offer that I'm unsure of if it's my only one! I hope none of us here are faced with that decision!

I was in this boat (I had two offers but only one was financially do-able). My advice if this happens to anyone here (and just considering the odds it probably will) is to go with your gut.

If this happens to me, I'll just take a poll on SDN and let everyone else decide my fate

Just wanted to say that today has been the biggest day for invites thus far with the addition of five new schools to the list! Also, I noticed the hits for this thread grew by over 2,000 hits today alone! So glad everyone else is checking as obsessively as I am 😛

soo i got an email this morning from my POI at the university of maryland, college park (clinical psych, phd). the interview day is saturday, 2/9. the email also said that 20 people were being invited out of ~280. woohoo! 😀

but.. now i have to decide... kent state or maryland?... 🙁 even this part is stressful!

1. Congratulations!

2. "Kent State of Maryland?" That is the easiest decision ever. The answer is Maryland (well, unless you have some personal reason for needing to be at Kent). Tell Kent you need a phone interview or you can come later.

thanks! and yeah, i'm pretty sure i'll go to the maryland one. kent state has an alternate date, so problem solved! 🙂

was that interview for maryland college park or maryland baltimore county?

University of Kansas: Child Clinical PhD Program, email invite, interview day is Feb 25th

I applied to Counseling Psychology Programs... and I keep hearing about interview dates for Clinical Programs... anyone... ANYONE in my boat... the only school I have a quasi idea bout is UCSB (and lets just say my news isn't great).... When are my interviews damnit...

For the record... this is very nerve racking... much more so than my master's or undergrad...

I wouldn't really hold my breath about getting an answer about why you didn't get an invite from a school. The grad secretary might have the accept/reject forms, and it might say on them what criteria you missed (missing the department GRE/GPA cutoff, no profs with similar interests, etc.). It's more likely that a box saying something like "We received many excellent applications and could not accept everyone" (read: some people simply beat you out in research match/experience/whatever) is checked. In that case, the grad secretary is probably not going to be able to tell you why you didn't get an invite and is probably fielding 40 other requests for the same thing.

I'd say if you're really interested, e-mail the POI. Don't ask why you didn't get in, ask what you can do to make your application more appealing for next year.

I think that now is a good time to remind yourselves that nobody gets interviews everywhere they apply. It never happens. So, if you find yourself not getting an interview at one particular school, don't despair. It definitely does not mean that you won't get in somewhere else. Nor does it even mean that the faculty didn't think you were a qualified applicant-- just that there were other applicants whose interests and experience fit that particular program better.
