Official 2012-2013 GI fellowship application cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Give it until mid-September, Cowabunga. I know for a fact that there are some programs who just started reviewing applications now. The last possible common deadline for applications is 8/31/12, so it only makes sense that the programs wait until after labor day weekend to make final decisions.
I did contact some programs and they told me their deadlines was 8/31. Invites will come out in the next couple weeks.

There are a number of programs I have heard nothing from that have offered others both rejections and interviews. I'm guessing they means I'm sitting on the bubble? Any thoughts?

I'm in this position with Vandy and Univ of Chicago. What about you?

They did for some people. Probably , some of us are on the waiting list....

Did U Chicago send out any invites yet? Just only rejections?

Did anyone hear from University of Toledo, Hershey, Cooper, Allegheny General or UMDNJ (Newark)?

BTW, why do all AMG's suddenly wanna do GI?
something going on behind the scenes that IMG's are not privy to? Just wondering out loud

2008: 319 AMG Applicants and 622 Total (51.3%)
2009: 309 AMG Applicants and 608 Total (50.8%)
2010: 312 AMG Applicants and 627 Total (49.8%)
2012: 343 AMG Applicants and 677 Total (50.7%)

Looks pretty consistent to me. My suspicion is that given this is the first year of the new match timeline, there has been a year and a half since people last applied. This gave a few extra people starting their PGY3 year (previously who would have considered and possibly deferred on applying as a PGY2) time to get more research and apply now. I would guess that the total number of applicants, both AMG and IMG are up this time around. Given that there are relatively the same number of spots, maybe this is what you are perceiving?

hoping for the best ....

Got Robert Wood Johnson interview.
Rejections from rush and case western today.

Can any one give me hope that interviews will still trickle and will not be left in drought! IMG mania !!

don't lose hope yet. invites are just starting to really come out. i got 3 this week.

places near me like hershey and UMDNJ (newark) have not sent out invites yet. they are still in the process of reviewing applications. if you really want to know, be like me and call the program to ask what stage are they in their application process.

northshore LIJ has 3 spots. they used to only take 1 internally, but now that the health system is now university based, i'm sure they're trying to take 2 internally now. please comment if you're more qualified than me on this one.

according to the list, tufts hasn't sent out anything yet. i do think there are a good number of programs still reviewing applications for a first time. then there will be those that are reviewing for the 2nd wave of interviews.

don't lose hope! give it until mid-september.

Love Letter from Univ Chicago! at least I can hear something today

thanks for the reply.
I am wondering if calling increases the chances of getting an interview call. From the core of my heart, I believe that it does not make any difference as the call goes to PC who have no say in selection committee. If it is otherwise, some one can correct me, I can start making calls. I would be more frustrated if I make calls just to know the status because at the end of the day, calls matter more than the knowledge of application status.

this is my personal opinion. if you do call the office, you speak to the PC. don't underestimate the PC. in the majority of the programs, the PC plays a major role in screening the applicants. only the applicants that are chosen by the PC go onto to have their applications reviewed by the PD. again, this is for an unknown percentage of programs (other programs screen applications differently). see this other current thread to get a look at the role specifics of a PC in cardiology fellowship -- http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=941759

anyway, i digress. i do not think you should call to facilitate an interview. it's really to see what's going on with the application status, whether invites have gone out already. maybe you missed the deadline when you submitted your application, etc. i do not think you should call the PD or even email the PD. that shows desperation. if anything, you should have your current residency PD to advocate for you, or a GI attending that has written a LOR on your behalf. they are really the best to validate your candidacy, rather than yourself.

IV At University of Manitoba for Canadian match lol. Finally.
