I sent out like 45. Definitely above average stats.
Anyhow, I'm gonna try and chill. This isn't as fun as I thought it would be!
Fear not. I looked over previous invite threads for the programs that I applied to. So far, I over applied (including ones where much less competitive applicants from my school matched in recent years). Of the 20+ that I applied to, in the past two years only 4 programs had offered interviews by now (per forum invite threads). Some programs offer interviews to those that have rotated there/whose schools are affiliated very early on. Of the total number of dates that interviews offers were reported for for these programs (~87 program dates/2 years), only 8% were before 9/21. 100% of programs sent out invites after 9/21. However, these next nine days should see the invites roll out, as the past two years 29% of offer dates were pre-deans' letter (10/1). By 10 days post dean's letter (10/10), 70% of invite days had passed. 2/3s of programs still sent out invites after this date.
Of course this is based on SDN posts and doesn't count the number of invites/program/date. However, this data is very much in line with what Monkey House stated... (Longwood, in fact, extended (at least one) invite on 9/24/13, but there are no SDN invite records from his program pre-mspe last year). Based on this analysis if you have 0 offers by 9/21, meh. No offers by 9/30, it's a only tad concerning, have a beer and maybe look to see when the programs you applied to typically send out invites. Consider an extra safety or two? No offers by 10/10? Maybe it's time to send a nice e-mail or two to a place that might have written you off based on location with a little update letter and consider sending a few more apps.
