Nah I don't celebrate thanksgiving since I wasn't even a US citizen until June. Also I'm vegetarian and pretty much only eat South Indian food so I doubt I'd do anything.
In regards to parties I didn't mean like birthday parties (though I don't throw birthday parties since I hate being the center of attention)

South Indian food is pretty good.

I'm Indian and we don't have any family nearby so we invite all the other Indian families in the same boat and we have a huge Thanksgiving party with Indian, Asian, and American good. We also have two turkeys for those who eat meat, a traditional American one and one made with Indian spices.

My favorite is sweet potatoes with the pecans and brown sugar topping. I also love a good dinner roll.

That sounds amazing!

I could never live if meat was in my house, I specifically chose my roommate because he was vegetarian

Vegetarians have fun on Thanksgiving too 😉 I actually 'converted' on the eve of Thanksgiving two years ago!
Well, let's not let this thread sink to the bottom. What is your favorite side dish at Thanksgiving?
Totally green bean casserole.

Eh I understand but my mom is Veg and my dad is non-Veg so everyone eventually learned to put up somewhere, somehow.

Ah, everyone in my family including every extended family member I've ever met is vegetarian. We're pretty particular about preserving our Telugu Brahmin lineage.

even if its tofurkey? 🙂
Yeah that just sounds weird and gross

Did you know that none of those at the first Thanksgiving were US citizens? 😉 You don't have to be American to give thanks for your blessings, and for the bountiful harvest and for friendship and mutual assistance.

I had a professor in college who was an immigrant and a widower so he often ate with students in the cafeteria. He was fascinated with what people ate at Thanksgiving besides turkey. Although we were a pretty much "white bread" school, there were ethnic differences in what we ate with, or before, the turkey (lasagna, pirogues, sweet pickles, etc.) You can certainly enjoy special occasion foods of your ethnic tradition at Thanksgiving without eating turkey.

Most people throw birthday parties for others and not for themselves.

I'm actually really thankful for getting IIs considering my background and experience. My family doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving either but it's always a good time for shopping in the states!😀

Doesn't mean it didn't come across that way.

Try to put a couple random smiley faces in your posts to ease the tension 🙂 works like a charm

I always insert random emojis and GIFs when I text people or post online but IRL I have a RBF :yeahright:

But emojis and smileys do always work like a charm~ XD

lmao good to hear XD

This thread seems to have derailed from its original purpose. Where am I supposed to join the no-interview pity party?
It's probably too early for a real pity party. Better to show up late (like all parties). Although, sitting alone in a room with a pity-party pinata could bring it to a new level... More fruitful to talk of food and distract yourself and see what happens over the next month and a half.

If you get concerned (like I did last year), planning and starting a new activity (or fixing whatever deficiency you think you have) in December or January still gives you a lot of time before you reapply (if needed). Until November or December, there's really not much more than you can do in terms of your application.

Speaking of which: custard pie is among my favorite holiday meals. Where I'm from, it (and any other pie) can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

I grew up eating all Thanksgiving food made 100% from scratch, so all the stuff I eat now just tastes bleh. Especially the dry boxed stuffing and that weird cranberry gelatin stuff.

Yuengling is the first thing that came to my mind 😉

In all seriousness, joining the 0 II party myself. LM ~68-70, complete late August, 1 rejection, silence from all others.

Except Campbells cream of mushroom still had chicken fat in it until a couple years ago. I was glad when it changed.

Idk how y'all vegetarians do it, assuming you don't eat meat by personal choice and not because of religious beliefs. I mean hats off to you guys, but my version of celebrating a big life event (like getting into medical school) has to start with a medium-rare filet from Ruth's Chris 😀

Have fun with that

Welcome to America, Now eat turkey and get fat like the rest of us good patriotic Americans.

EDIT: Or just eat your culturally appropriate food, just remember to get fat.

I mean it's not like I'm unfamiliar with what Thanksgiving is; I grew up in the US after all.
I just can't identify with it. My traditions are thousands of years old and stem from a totally different culture. This seems too forced and artificial for me (though for others it may feel natural).
My home really is its own enclave of India in America. I don't even speak English with my family.
Honestly most Asian families (and other nonwhite immigrants) I know don't celebrate Thanksgiving.
Also I do the whole giving thanks thing everyday anyway.
You need to expand your circle of exposure.

I agree with this sentiment. Every immigrant family I know celebrates Thanksgiving by creating their own cultural cuisine. It is also the function of being the only day off that most of the all of the workers-blue collar, tend to have together.

Your anecdote isnt more than his. He may live in an area where most dont.

Tbf, most asians i met didnt celebrate thanksgiving, ive traveled my fair share

Do you spice the turkey using Indian spices? Because I know of a few families that do that. Delicious.

My anecdote doesnt take away from the gist of the argument, that perhaps interacting with people different from oneself is a positive force for everyone involved.

I am also Asian if that helps, and I also immigrated after OP did.

Applied to 11 schools. Complete mostly in late August. 3 or so in September and 1 three days ago. Applied to 4 OOS state schools that are OOS unfriendly and 7 schools that are mostly in my LizzyM but some slightly more research heavy than my experience. 100 hrs clinical volunteering and 64 hours shadowing is my clinical experience. "Meh" sort of EC's at least compared to people on here. Getting comfortable, it could be a longish year.

Vegetarianism is one of the most integral aspects of my identity

How do you know when I immigrated

This tbh. Go to any of the high density Indian neighborhoods in the tristate area and I doubt you'll find a single family celebrating thanksgiving. Probably applies to other Asians as well.

Just gotta be patient!

I think all of SDN shares the sentiment.

There's some positive aspects to all the waiting, I think. It can be nice to accept that you've done everything you can for now, let go, and let the ball be in someone else's court for a while. You can focus on the other parts of your life that are important to you.

I meant all of SDN wishes Baratheon would get a damn II allready.

Yeah how are you going to be a doctor without any... patience

I'm a monster

I agree. Especially if we can get more people to post random comics in the social thread, since I kinda feel lonely over there 🙁

I wonder. Will vegetarians be able to eat synthetic lab grown meat? Or will it still be against their beliefs

Can Brahmins touch Dalits? It might be difficult doing a physical exam.

Depends, those with religious and cultural reasons will probably abstain anyway.

The "Meat is Murder" people may come around though...
