As 2018 approaches and people are starting to rev up for their CK studying I figured I would start the 2018 Step 2 CK Experiences and Scores Thread.

As always please follow all of the forum / NBME / USMLE etc.. rules and regulations when posting.

My dedicated starts tomorrow, have about 6 weeks to study over the holidays. Hoping for a 250 +, scored a 26x on step 1.

Good luck to everyone taking the exam in 2018!

hey congratulations 🙂 can you please share your score? did you drop score from assessment exams?
My score was higher than any nbme, but lower than my Uworld tests. I believe if I time and actually read the 40 questions instead of guessing, my score would have been within my Uworld assessment.

Hi Everyone I've been lurking on SDN since my premed days. Never made an account cause I figured I don't fit in with the super smart ppl here who score super high on exams. Made one today to help the below average students 🙂 I just got my Step 2CK score and I don't have words to express how happy I am.

Started studying in May, but not seriously until June.
Step 1: 222

NBME 6: 198 (4 wks before exam, before really studying)
UWSA 1: 209 (3 wks before exam)
NBME 7: 211 (2-3 wks before exam)
NBME 8: 203 (6 days before exam, was ready to delay my exam at this point. Cried lurked on SDN, studied like a maniac, decided to keep my date and trust myself. I read that NBMEs are not super predictive and that UWSAs aren't as predictive on the lower end.)
Free 120 at exam center: 83% (3 days before exam, read online that anything about 75% meant you are ready to take it.)
UWSA 2: 211 ( 2 days before exam, I was really scared. Still stuck with my exam date, keeping in mind that UWSAs are not predictive with borderline scores.)

Step 2: 233!!!!

I am so happy with my score I could not have asked for anything more. I went through UWorld 1x during third year, reset during my dedicated, and did most of my incorrect questions. I did offline old NBME exams. Used OME, StepUpTo Medicine for topics I struggled with. MTB 1 pass. I always reviewed explanations and why I got things wrong.

Like mentioned before, NBMEs and UWSAs are not predictive when you're scoring borderline. Maybe my environment affected my scores too since its not in the prometric center. Regardless >75% on the Free 120 is really what pushed me to believe in myself and take the exam.

Walked out of the exam thinking I failed, marked 50% of questions. I was able to get to every question but only had 1-2mins to spare per block so couldn't review marked questions. So glad I took my exam and didn't delay because studying more would not have helped me. I honestly had no idea what some of the questions were even asking.

I hope this post helps someone. Good Luck!
I just wanted to thank you so much for this post. I literally was sitting here thinking I wish someone posted something like this.
Can I ask why you think your practice test scores were what the were? As in, what could you have done during your studying to help improve your score or was there something you did in the last couple of days or even on test day that made a difference?

I wish I knew. I think I psyched myself out during each practice exam I took or second guessed my gut answers when I was unsure. But I think the score difference is significant enough that I think its more than just that.

During my last week I went through 60% of my uworld incorrects, got 70% through online med ed questions. I think my UWORLD avg during my pass during dedicated was ~66%, I did not remember any of the questions since I had done them to study for shelf exams. I went through MTB in two days as a review and to catch concepts I didn't know. I wrote these down in a small notebook and reviewed it everyday. I reviewed my biostats equations and biases.

But even with all this I didn't do as well on my final UWSA2, two days before the exam. Sooo to be honest I have no idea how it could've jumped that much in 2 days. I think its simply that NBMEs and UWSAs are not as predictive in the < 220 range. While studying I did at least 120 questions a day. During my last week I was doing at least 200 a day, mixed blocks of my incorrects and OME questions. I think this has a lot to do with my score jump.

Hope this helps 🙂

Step 1: 241
Uworld 1st pass: 67%
Uworld 2nd pass: 84%
NBME 6: 243
NBME 7: 235
NBME 8: 247
UWSA 1: 252 (1 month before CK)
UWSA 2: 258 (3 weeks before CK)
Free USMLE: 85% (9 days before CK)
Step 2 CK: 256

Step 1: 231
UWSA 1 And 2 for step 2: 240
Real step 2 CK: 229

Not sure what happened. I took the test and it felt difficult as expected. Anyone know my chances at matching into IM? Don’t have any research. Have a few volunteering experiences.

DO student. Here's some stats for us average or below average peeps.

UW 1st pass: ~60%
UW 2nd pass: 79% (80% complete)

Level 1:450 (didn't take step 1 because I took a NBME practice test and score was barely passing)
UWSA 1= 224 (4-5 weeks before)
NBME 7= 220
NBME 8= 213
NBME 6= 232 (7 days before)
UWSA 2= 224 (5 days before)
COMSAE B: 590
Free 120= 78-79%

Step 2: 235
Level 2: 630

Walked out feeling okay, but remembering lots of questions of missed. Also ran out of time on many blocks. But overall can't complain, hopefully will be enough to match EM.

This gives me so much hope to take the test. I find it so crazy here with everyone with insanely high scores on their practice tests like 2 months out and then take the exam and get the same thing. Nice to see someone not doing well on the practice tests and make a decent jump on the real deal congrats. Any other advice for people like us during exam day? Did you see a lot of common themes etc. Anything worth reviewing in the last month. Anything you wish you did differently?

Hey everyone, found this forum very useful as I was meticulously tracking my progress so thought I would share my experience. DO student here. Just took Step II, will update as the results come in.

Step I: 230

Step II prep:
OME sprinkled in
UW First pass (throughout third year): 67%
UW Second Pass: 83%
UWSA 1 after first pass, probably 6 weeks out: 249
UWSA 2 after 2nd pass, 2 weeks out: 245

Waiting on results of step II.

Alright. Step 2 final just came in: 259.

Overperformed by ten points on my best self assessment.

Idk if I’m the best person to give advice lol. Continue doing questions and add a second qbank if you have time. Concept wise I honestly don’t know if there is a good way to prepare for the exam. I feel like they purposely tested on things not found in review books and UWORLD. Several random step 1 style questions which you can’t really prepare for too. But just trust what you know and give it a shot.

On exam day pace yourself. Your brain really gets fried by the last two blocks, so plan breaks accordingly. Felt like I was running on autopilot and guessing a lot towards the end. Stick with what you know, don’t get stuck on a question and overthink it. You will be thrown crazy questions and have to guess, it’s ok, that’s normal.

In the last month review the things you’ve struggled with. I wish I had wrote down things which I had a difficult time remembering when I first started studying. Only did that during the last week, cause I’m lazy and hate writing. I slacked off when studying, I think I could’ve worked harder. I guess you just have to find a way to get out of the rut after a week or two of studying.

Good luck!

I didn't feel like **** after my test and now I'm worried. Everyone who felt like **** did extremely well. I felt okay. The anxiety is setting in.

hey! I am a DO student too who only took Step 2 Ck not step 1..I was told to still take step 1 because idk how programs are going to view only a step 2 plus comlex. What are your thoughts on this? Have you gotten any real feedback from programs about this?

Not sure yet, I heard EM in particular often cares about Step 2 more than Step 1. But still many programs have cutoffs which they use Step 1 score for. Of course its better to have Step 1+2 but I figured it's better to have just Step 2 than no Steps at all. Not sure how helpful that was, but yeah. Good luck!

Test is on Friday. UWSA1 last Sunday- 268. UWSA2 today- 252. I felt like UWSA 2 was extremely difficult, and I had a ton of things marked. Do a lot of people have this big of a drop between the two tests? Should I feel confident if my goal is like a 244?
Alright, I had the same experience. UWSA2 was WAY harder than 1. So many ambiguous questions, several "What would you say" that I just disagree with, etc.

My test is this Monday, so it really shook my confidence, but it's nice to see i'm not alone

Congrats and thanks for posting! How did you hear that UWSAs are not predictive for borderline scores?

Congrats!so proud to have this type of person in medical field!I wish the best ahead of you.Do you think Uworld +CMS+NBME enough to pass 260?
It should be more than enough. Some people don't like it but I loved first aid, it helped organize the material and the rapid review definitely got me a few questions

Congrats and thanks for posting! How did you hear that UWSAs are not predictive for borderline scores?

Hours of digging deep into the sdn posts from this year and the past lol. I also compared my possible to score to the predictive value of the free 120 and took my shot. A few posts from 2017 and 2016 mention that you should be good to take the exam if scoring > 75%. Im sure there’s lots of other students like me who have similar experiences to me but don’t post on here.

Yikes, I just finished USWA and got a 213. Not pushing it back, but guess I'll finish reviewing it and work on finishing the 2nd run of uworld. I do feel that had I done USWA 1 today, it would've been a better score lol. Not letting it get me down b/c I usually score lower on practice tests, but was hoping for at least 230 on it. Definitely need to go over ob/gyn and peds tho:cat:
edit: As I am reviewing, it seems there's a lot narrowing down to 2 choices and picking the other one b/c I overthought it, silly mistakes like CI questions that again, I over thought and the rest are "duh" moments. At some point I kept re-reading questions because I forgot what it asked... will def be going to sleep earlier these next days *sigh*
So I guess I'll just keep updating lol
I just took the free 120 and got an 86%. Not saying that guarantees anything but I do feel a little better, even though they were relatively straightforward. With that said, I asked for a sign as to whether I should take this as planned, and after seeing that lovely post about scoring higher than the practice tests and prometrics calling to let me know about my exam Friday, I'll take it as a sign to push forward :xf:

Hello! Just thought I would share.

Step 1: 256
NBME 6: 245 1 month before exam
UWSA1: 261 2 weeks before exam
UWSA2: 267 1 week before exam
NBME 8: 267 1 week before exam (took same day as UWSA2)
Step 2 CK: 276

I thought the best study resources were UWorld, Step Up to Medicine, and First Aid Step 2 CK. I honestly thought MTB2 did not have enough information or go into detail. Timing is crucial during this exam - DO TIMED TESTS! Taking two tests the same day also helped to mentally prepare for the exam and how long it would be. I felt terrible after taking this test and was completely surprised by my score. Good luck!

hey man, literally SAME experience for me as well. 271 UWSA1, dropped to 251 UWSA2 today. confidence is completely shook now. Exam in two days. I guess it’s just going to go how it goes, no clue where i stand.

Read this on the ECFMG website
"Necessary modifications to the test item pool will result in a delay in reporting for some examinees who test beginning the week of June 30, 2018. The target date for reporting Step 2 CK scores for most examinees testing the week of June 30 through mid-August will be Wednesday, August 29, 2018."

Is this only for IMG or does this also apply to students here in the U.S. who tested during those dates? I didn't find anything about this on the actual USMLE website.

Ok to anyone who walks out of the Step 2 exam thinking they failed can you just tell your brain to stfu there's about N=100000+ experiences of almost EVERYONE feeling this way leaving Step 2. You're going to hit your UWSA so why even worry until the day you get your score. There's nothing you can do and this has just become the typical exam experience. Go out and celebrate. Chances are you passed if your assessments were decent.

If I can thumbs up and repost anything it is this. I definitely thought I did terrible. I know we all think that after exams, and I read this thread and heard people always thought they did poorly, but this one was especially so. I even bargained with myself before opening the score report that as long as I passed, I would be happy. I haven't studied enough throughout the year, and definitely looked stuff up afterwards and it was all wrong; Annnnd after all that, got a 250 by some fn miracle.

If youre waiting on your score, dont dissect the test. period.

this is terrible!!! I didn't know about this

Congrats. How long did you prepare for it? How did you use Uworld ??

I imagine for everyone? So I take it that we will be getting our scores in order starting on August 29th?

Hi guys.

Can you guys tell me what percentage did you guys get in UWSA 1 and what score did it correlate to? And could you mention the same for UWSA 2 as well (if you've taken that too). I'm about to give UWSA 1 in a day. My exam is on 8th August, 2018. Uworld first round was 70%. I've been doing UWorld second the second time (timed random). Done 6 blocks so far (along with revision of my notes), and I'm getting 84% average.

So yeah, it'd be great it you guys can tell me the percentage correct you got in UWSA1 and 2 and the score those percentages correlated to!

Thanks a a lot. Will post my experience once i give my exam and get my result back.

UWSA 1 - 87% - 270
UWSA 2 - 85% - 267

I had a terrrrrible experience with Step 1, failed it, retook it so on. So I had a LOT of Step PTSD to contend with. Therefore, my studying started in April (doing elective rotations while studying). I used UWorld, MTB and Kaplan Qbank.
NBME 6: 187 (baseline)
UWSA 1: 224 (3 weeks later)
NBME 7: 202 (2 weeks after UWSA 1)
NBME 8: 203 (2 weeks after that, 1 week out from original test date)
Pushed test back a month.
Took UWSA 2, 2 and a half weeks later, 1 week out from new test date: 228

Took the real deal on July 1st, 2018
Final Score of 229, some people might be disappointed but I'm freaking losing my mind I'm so excited I passed the first go round. Thank God or the powers that be or whatever. Step exams are the freaking worst, I have terrible test anxiety and think they are not AT ALL representative of someone's ability in the hospital or clinic.

1st time poster. Applying anesthesia.

UW % 1st pass: somewhere in the 70s
NBME 6 (baseline): 220
NBME 7: 226
NBME 8: 238
UWSA 1: 259
UWSA 2: 252
Step 2 CK (6/25): 251

The exam was a beast. Marked literally half of the questions in every block (I mark the ones I don't know or the 50/50 ones). One of the few times I'm glad to have possibly the hardest exam I've ever taken. The progression of difficulty level from Step 1 to Step 2 is exponential. It's ridiculous. Hope to inspire those who walked out of the exam feeling defeated. Trust your UWSAs.

In retrospect, the key to doing well is to do well during 3rd year rotations. Learn from your patients. Reading for 1 hour on 1-2 patients (everything from epidemiology to management like on uptodate) is more useful than superficially reading up on 5 patients on your patient list, IMO. I did UW once during the year, then reset during 4 weeks of "dedicated" (I was on a rotation so no dedicated time like step 1). Used Online Med Ed throughout the year but not during dedicated. Used Step Up to Medicine during dedicated. As with all exams, the money lies in doing as many questions and learning from them. Good luck fam.

Quick question y'all. If one were to take their exam by August 21st, would it be reasonable to expect a score back in 3-4 Wednesdays? Because the 4th Wednesday would be Sept 12th which would allow me to apply as soon as apps open. Or is the delay in score reporting too difficult to predict and it may very well be after that? Any idea?

This forum was a huge help when preparing for Step, so I figured I would share my experience. I'm a 1st time poster US MD student who is applying EM. I took Step 2CK June 30th. The "print permit" tab disappeared Sunday, July 22nd, and score was reported July 25th at 11am eastern.

Step 2CK: 265

Step 1: 242
Shelf exams: 77 (IM), 83 (family), 83 (surg), 84 (peds), 86 (OB/GYN) 87 (psych), 92 (neuro)
Uworld average 1st time: 74% (untimed, during specific clerkship)
Uworld average 2nd time: 90% (timed, random, 50% completed)

UWSA 1: 262 (7 weeks out)
NBME 7: 243 (4 weeks out, WTF?)
UWSA 2: 260 (1 week out)
NBME 8: 267 (3 days out)

I did Uworld + incorrects once during clerkships, then I restarted Uworld about 8 weeks before step 2ck and made it half way through. I was on rotations for the first 7 weeks. These were lighter rotations, so I was able to study 3-4 hrs/day for 5 days a week. I had 1 week off for dedicated prep. I occasionally used First Aid, Step Up to Medicine, and Uptodate for reference whenever I felt weak on an Uworld question, but about 95% of my studying was with Uworld. The real deal was pretty similar to the UWSAs, but just a little faster with a little more difficult content.

Step exams are the freaking worst, I have terrible test anxiety and think they are not AT ALL representative of someone's ability in the hospital or clinic.

Wow that is an amazing accomplishment based on the scores provided. Congratulations! This is a feat nonetheless. As someone who is getting exactly the same scores can you give me some advice on how I can also pass with my exam coming up in about 4 weeks. I just finished my first round of Uworld and also got the same score as you on NBME 6. Can you give me some advice on what you did to get to the UWSA score as well as test day advice. Thank you again and congratulations

Yet another lurker here! I read this thread often while preparing for CK, and I wanted to contribute now that my results are back. I completed about 65% of Uworld throughout 3rd year. During dedicated, I spent 4 weeks reading FA for CK and finishing UW (800 Qs) and redoing my incorrects (650 Qs).

Step 1: 238

Uworld first pass: 75%

NBME 6: 245 (baseline, 4 weeks out)

NBME 7: 243 (3 weeks out)

NBME 8: 256 (2 weeks out)

UWSA 1: 268 (1 week out)

Step 2 CK: 260 (06/23/18)

Congrats. How long did you prepare for it? How did you use Uworld ??

Hey! I started studying hard during my final clerkship (probably mid April). I used UWorld throughout 3rd year during each clerkship and then went through it again during my last clerkship. I always choose a random group of questions and I prefer the timed tutor mode. Any questions I got wrong I jotted down notes in Step Up to Medicine or FA. I think I got probably a 75% first pass and an 87% 2nd pass. Hope that helps!

For those who might be feeling crummy waiting for their scores to return...

Took CK June 30th. I only had a few hours of sleep (if any) the night prior. There were multiple blocks (2) where I had like 5-8 questions I had to guess on because I ran out of time. Most of the blocks I had only 30 seconds to answer the last 5+ questions. I was so tired by the end of it, I had a hard time focusing on the screen. Needless to say, when I walked out, I felt like absolute poop.

CCSE (4 weeks prior): 220
UWSA1 (2 weeks prior): 240
UWSA2 (1 week prior): 248
Free 120: 82%
Real deal (Step 2 CK): 245

Moral of the story - trust your scores - even if you feel like poop afterwards. Good luck everyone 🙂

Seriously... Idk what to think but I'll try not to think about it...the stress only triggers my gerd

Honestly, did great on step 1, felt confident coming out of it. Dedicated 6 weeks for this and feel like a dumpster fire. Literally each block, at best 20 I knew, 10 were 50/50, and 10 hail Mary's. Kinda ridiculous to take a test and see things you've never read about before or at least seen in a practice question or 2. Hopefully we both killed it and are just plagued with self doubt.

Yeah, similar experience... didn't "kill" step 1and definitely thought I failed but it's good enough for psych, so I wanted to do better on step 2. Practice tests weren't great but I changed a lot of them to incorrects with them. Idk, the exam initially was ok but then they kept asking questions from different angles. At times I think, okay, we're good; at others, I would think to myself what would happen if I fail CK...I can't come back here again lol.
I agree, I'm hoping for the best outcome!

Took Step 2 CK yesterday. Honestly worried because it didn’t feel as horrible as I expected based on what people have said lol. Don’t get me wrong it was VERY tough, but also felt doable at times. Lots of random thing i’ve never seen and down to 2 answer questions, but felt okay at the end.

I was all over the place on practice tests (271 UWSA1, 251 UWSA2), so no real clue where I stand. Just hoping for above average at this point I guess. Will update when scores release (scary lol)

Sadly it's going to be a long 32 day wait!
