I don't know if this thread has been started for this year's applications. Good luck to everyone!!
Here is last year's link: 2018-2019 Psychiatry Interview Invite Thread

LINK TO GOOGLE DOC is y'all prefer that instead:

Instructions from last year's thread:

1. Keep the list in the body when you reply
2. Please sort alphabetically by state
3. Try to say what school/program you are adding in the subject line
4. It would be helpful if the person who FIRST adds a program could also include the date they received their invite.

Please include these instructions when you quote - And quote the last list available!
Step 1: Click on the blue "QUOTE" button at the bottom right of the last post (don't copy and paste since it will not pick up the HTML code for boldface fonts).
Step 2: Remove the bracketed things at the very beginning and very end. (QUOTE=username;numbers) and (/QUOTE) - where the parentheses are brackets.
Step 3: Make your additions, then post. Please type what you are adding in the title/subject line so people won't have to search the whole post to see what you added.

Good luck everyone!

This thread is very inactive compared to this time last year.

N = 2 university program PDs told me they're not doing anything till Oct 1 due to the Sunday release (9/15), the > 1k applications, and their desire to watch movies and/or enjoy these 2 weeks. Most IVs so far seem to be from home institutions.

Thank you for the reassurance, I needed some! My home institution waits for the MSPE but I guess I was hoping they would at least invite their home students early or something.

It looks like there are MANY fewer psych applicants on SDN this year. My gut tells me this season will be less competitive. It’ll be interesting to see if the data support this.

One of the university programs I rotated at had twice as many home students as last year applying for psychiatry and I've heard the same about a few other programs, but let's hope :xf:

At my home institution there are half the number of us applying compared to last year so maybe it will even out.

Adding a bunch from Google Spreadsheet.
If any of this is wrong, you have the ability to post a new list and don't need to message me directly. I'm just going off of what is on the Google sheet.

I believe the Carolinas Medical Center were just supplementals

So if we have not received invites from places that already have sent them out does that mean we likely won’t be getting an invite from them at a later time? (Unless someone cancels?)

I received all of my invites between early October and early December.

None in September.

Ended up with more than 20.

And on March 11th I saw the beautiful words “Match results: Congratulations, you have matched!”.

Don’t panic.

No. The 3 places I have scheduled via ERAS all still have open interview slots. You're fine

The feeling when one of them is your home program.

Long time lurker here. So do PDs review all of the applicants before sending out invites or send out invites as they see applications they like? So many of the programs I applied to seem to have already sent out invites...but not any to me lol.

Definitely varies by program unfortunately. One PD told me they liked to look at as many candidates as possible before sending out invites. I’m no expert but I’ve been screening secondary applications for medical school and this includes reading and grading the secondaries, reading the personal statements, and reading the experiences section + doing a short write up on each candidate. I get ten a week and if I do more than 5 in a day I start to get tired. This stuff takes so much time and energy. It’s easy to forget that programs are getting ~1000 apps and even though some invites have been sent, there’s no way they’ve even scratched the surface all that deeply at 10 days in. I feel your pain, I’ve seen some similar thing happen with programs I would love to invite me but I guess we just have to trust the process.

Most programs send out multiple rounds of invites regardless of what method they use to do their initial reviews. It is way, way, WAY too early to start fretting about programs not inviting you.

Hey guys, if I applied to a specific residency-fellowship track (i.e. research, child) along with the main program for a specific school, and am no longer that interested/set-in-stone in that track, is it okay to express this during interview? Do you think this will count against me?

Hey guys, if I applied to a specific residency-fellowship track (i.e. research, child) along with the main program for a specific school, and am no longer that interested/set-in-stone in that track, is it okay to express this during interview? Do you think this will count against me?

If you aren't interested in a track, you could 1) withdraw from just that track or 2) send a note replying to your interview invitation expressing that you have decided that you are only interested in the main track.

It's ok to interview for a track if you're genuinely on the fence but if you're not... don't waste people's (including your) time. You'll just shoot yourself in the foot with child or research interviewers who will either be annoyed that you aren't really interested in their track or you'll feign interest but won't be able to ask the questions that you need to ask to the main track people. It shows some maturity to say "actually, I'm not ready to commit to the specialty track right now."

Depending on what program and what track, you may actually end up in a whole different application review process that may make you differentially competitive by checking a different box (depending on whether you're application to the track is stronger or weaker than to the main program).

They're approximately 150 interviews behind the total offered by this point in the year. This could be attributed to a combination of decreased over-offering relative to actual available dates AND the increased applicant anxiety which keeps applicants away from the spreadsheet, SDN, and reddit. I applied to 88 and a significant number of them show no invites extended yet, so it could be slower or spreadsheet avoidance/ignorance.

2-pre MSPE and 2-post(ish) MSPE. Who are these people getting so many interviews? Also my top "safety" just sent out IVs recently and I didn't get one and I want to cry.

I don't even know what a safety is at this point. I thought I applied to enough "safeties" based on Residency Explorer (being in the "upper 25% of matched applicants"/"above range of matched applicants" at those programs). I have plenty of schools where, based on my numbers and extracurriculars, I thought I was competitive at. All of them have been pumping out interviews to anyone but me. Only one has invited me and they are regional. The non-regional ones aren't even looking at me. "Safety" or not, I only applied to programs I genuinely liked in locations my partner and I could see ourselves living in so it's killing me to not hear from them.
