Took the exam yesterday. Was very exhausted but didn't feel as bad as with Step 1.
Non-US IMG studying in Australia, had a low Step 1 (low230s) hoping to match anaesthesia this year.
Total pre time: 3 months with no dedicated. On rotation for the entire time.
Resources:
- 1 round of Uworld only - 73% average untimed tutored system over the course of 1 year after my Step 1 last June.
- Uworld incorrect for only OB/GYN, surgery and paediatrics .
- Reviewed my own Uworld notes twice (205 pages)
- MTB2, MTB3, Secrets selected chapters.
Self-assessments:
- UWSA1: 250 (4 weeks out)
- NBME 7: 235 (3 weeks out)
- UWSA 2: 260 (1.5 week out)
- Free 120 right after UWSA 2: 83% (1.5 week out)
Test day experience:
- Overall felt like a mix of NBME 7 and UWSA 2. Long questions were longer than Uworld, and short questions were only 3-4 sentences/incomplete clinical pictures or testing very specific knowledge.
- 2 blocks of 38 questions, no drug ad questions but got 2 abstracts. They were pretty easy once you know what they are actually asking- similar to Uworld.
-Biostats were not too bad. Uworld covers it all. Had 1 per block I think?
- Theres this new questions format: it's like a discharge or admission summary, super long and detailed but organised.I'd suggest reading the HPI only and then jump straight to the question. I've never seen those before!
- Yes, immune deficiencies, lysosomal storage disorders were heavily tested.
- ID: Sketchy micro is not enough. The presentations were atypical, and the images were not the usual ones you can find in most study resources. Honestly I'm not sure how to prep for this...
- 3 auscultations , lots of x-ray and CT. Yes know your abnormal heart sounds and chest sounds.
- Some of the diseases were not included in any of the resources, including Uworld. I got them correct only because I rotate at an academic tertiary hospital and go to medical grand rounds....
- I took break after each block. Fatigue kicked in by block 7. Eyes were blurry.
- Didnt have time to review any questions. 1-2 minutes left for most blocks. Randomly clicked at least 4 questions in some of the blocks 🙁
Tips:
- If you can take Step 2 right after Step 1, do it! Got at least 10 questions on specific pathology findings, genes and inheritance patterns.
- Uworld covers 60-70% of the knowledge base.
Counted at least 15-20 questions wrong. Any chance I could score >250???? Will update my score when it comes back in 3-4 weeks. Hopefully I can have my report back before Sept 15th!
