HI, I am a PGY2 resident in a community program, will apply for GI fellowship next year.
My credentials are :
STEP 1 : 250, STEP 2 : 247, STEP 3 : 231, CS : pass
Had neuroscience research: 6 months before joining the residency
Publications: 1 GI case report submitted in ACG. 3 more submitted case reports but not related to GI
Greencard Holder
In my program, we don't have enough time and opportunity for research

I want to know if I apply next year with a few more publications in GI, what are my chances in matching? also, people alys discourage saying that its not possible to match in GI outside your own program? Please guide what I can do to increase my chances to match?

For you - step scores (although downtrend is of some concern) - you will likely pass most filters however
Against you - community prog, lack of research, GC

No one says "it's not possible to match outside of your own program". If they do, they don't know what they're talking about and you need to increase your sample size of "people." Few programs will delve into whether your program does/does not allow enough time for research - you can mention this - but hard for this to come across as anything less than an excuse.

Apply broadly...very broadly. Consider research/chief year (if available).

Busy day

I wish there was a way we could also post our step score intervals (ie 235-240) on the google response sheet to estimate what their Score cutoffs were for this year.

I wonder if they were higher Step cut offs this year given the volume.

Hey guys, long time lurker who’s now scared out of his mind and looking for some advice.

AMG from top 40 med school, mid tier residency.
Step 1- 250s
Step 2- 250s
Step 3- pushed back because of Covid, taking it this week

4 manuscripts, all GI one first author, 2 second author. 6-7 posters mostly GI.
LOR: 1 PD, 2 GI, 1 IM (all pretty average)

Applied to 97 programs and only have two interviews so far (one from home institution). I applied to a lot of the places that have already sent out interviews, but obviously not to me.

Do you guys think not having step three is preventing me from getting any interviews? I thought I would be a pretty competitive applicant, but having only two interviews right now it’s kind of freaking me out. Thanks for your help!

Not sure about the step 3 but are you confident in your letters? They can really make or break in this game.

I really don't think not having Step 3 is preventing you from getting interviews. Generally, nobody really cares about Step 3 unless you fail it or maybe pass with the absolute minimum score. Given your step 1 and 2 scores, I don't think anyone is doubting your ability to pass that test and given the delays due to COVID, that's even more a reason for programs not to care.

It is however, a bit unusual that you only have 2 interviews (in the context of applying to ~100 programs) one of which is your home program with the pretty solid CV above. Of course, I don't know the whole story - perhaps the average letters you mentioned may be less than average? A poorly written or wishy washy personal statement could set you back. When you say you applied to a lot of places that already sent out invites, are they just the top tier ones? Because if so, I wouldn't be surprised as those places are complete crap shoots, especially this year.

so I know my PD letter and my IM letter are strong. I wasn’t able to view one of the G.I. letters, the other G.I. letter was good, but it was a little brief. I honestly didn’t think much of it at the time because the letter says the writer would strongly recommend me for any program, so I though it was good enough. My personal statement was pretty generic, but I didn’t really have a great story or reason I want to go into G.I. other than I just really love the field.

Yeah I’m not sure if it’s just this application cycle or what. I was told I’d be a very competitive applicant. I’d say about 5 to 10 of the programs that have said our interviews were definitely top 15 and I wasn’t expecting an interview from them, but they were a few interviews from programs in my residency state as well as my medical school that I didn’t get interviews from that are pretty average programs.

Are you sure your IM program is mid tier? Some consider UCSD or OHSU mid tier and then people at say, stony brook or SUNY think they are also midtier IM when they are really more low tier academics. The name of the IM program carries a ton of weight.

This is a great point. I overlooked this.

I wouldn't be too worried then. From what you're telling me, 5-10 top programs (which you weren't expecting interviews from anyway) + a "few" programs (I imagine another 5-7 at most) is still ~15 out of ~100 you applied to. What I would do is reach out (or have mentors do so) to the aforementioned average programs in your state and your med school's program that you didn't get interviews from and re-iterate your interest - it cant hurt.. There are plenty of reasons why good applications can get overlooked.

This application year more than any before it (and possibly any that come after it if the pandemic eases) is the ultimate 'seller's market'.

Aside from having the scores, AMG, and research (all which you have), if things do not improve in 1-2 weeks, I would have a trusted mentor review your application for any perceived weaknesses (ex. lackluster letters/personal statement).

I disagree with some of the posters above about Step 3. It may not matter as much to the urology resident who's already in a 5 year training program with a set career trajectory. If you're an IM resident with sights set on GI, you are not in the same boat. You do not want to stick out in anything that may even begin to be perceived as a 'negative' or 'incomplete' (Step 3 included). Obviously, things are out of your control at this point, but it is sage advice to take it as soon as possible after medical school ends...not just for the brain drain over time when it comes to peds/OB/etc topics but also for situations like you are describing.

Does geography matter? I am in the midwest and most of my interviews are from midwest programs. I guess any given program in a distant region (coastal, southwest, south etc) would wonder why I would apply there with no program-specific reason or familial ties etc?

Hey guys, just another applicant here who is having a disappointing season

IMG - Community program, PGY3

Step 1 - 247
Step 2 - 238
Step 3 - 210

Research
Posters - 4 at national conferences
2 retrospective cohorts - 1 published in Hepatology
1 case report, 2 in the works

No luck so far.

Any suggestions?

When emailing programs, do we email PD or coordinator or both?

You got filtered out of many places due to Step 3 (Most likely)

Super disappointing season. I heard match day is getting pushed to a later date since everything has been delayed. Anyone else heard of this?

Also, what’s a good way to email programs. I’m planning on waiting a little longer, but in terms of what to say... how do you convey interest without sounding annoying?

A lot of people have already done this at my program and not a single one got a positive response or result out of it. Programs are probably too busy and have enough stuff to read so another paragraph on an email about “interest” probably will be trashed at this point.
The best would be to have your program leadership get them on the phone.

PGY-2 IMG at Mid tier community program in the south with an average GI match prior years.
Green-card
Step 1 250s
Step 2 250s
Step 2 CS 2nd attempt
Step 3 pending
No gaps in CV
Research published all GI - 8 manuscripts: 2 first author, 1 second author, 3 third author (all studies, no case reports)
Research submission/near completion all GI - ~10 manuscripts: 3 first author, 2 second author and 4-5 as other author (all studies, no case reports)
>25 posters in DDW and ACG (all studies, 2 case reports)
Will have really strong letters from mentors, I am kind of sure.
I will be apppying next year. If anyone can reflect on how much can failing Step 2 CS hurt you in GI match, would really appreciate that. I have been working hard on research but the feeling of getting filtered out is depressing. Asking to see if there is any way I can do something to overcome the negative effect of CS attempt- like actively reaching out to programs? Or doing away rotations (if the pandemic allows me to do that), higher step 3 score or anything else from any one's experience?

Thank you
The season has been strange so far -Wishing you all Goodluck!!

Seems like 1st week of September so far has mostly been just the tippiest of top tier getting love.

I received an invite from Coney Island Hospital earlier today but they addressed me by the wrong name. Did this happen with anyone else?

Is wave of interview of thing? Or if you applied to the programs already listed here but did not get an invite means you are out? Thanks.

I've received a handful of invites after the dates posted so I do think people are starting to decline/cancel interviews and at least somewhat of a second wave exists (I am starting to cancel/decline myself). Good luck everyone, there are still a lot of programs that haven't sent out invites!

What is you guys' standard approach to answer the "tell me about yourself" question? I usually give a super super condensed version of where I grew up, my training experiences thus far and how I got interested in GI. I feel like this can be gleaned from my CV and personal statement but not sure what else to add to this that would not make it too long winded. Thanks.

I talked about myself. Not GI related, but who I am as a person and what is important to me. Where I'm from, activities I like, things that are important to me.

I always talk about experiences in research, academic and training and close by talking about my personality

Thank you
The season has been strange so far -Wishing you all Goodluck!!

you will match if you rank 3 programs. my feelings tell me

Many programs may have filtered you out because of your step scores. At my home program, I was told by the PD that they don't generally look at IMGs under 240 and AMGs under 220; and that program is only mid-tier. Only thing I can say that has worked for me in getting past filters is referrals from faculty and/or current or former fellows.

Feeling very dreadfully like the top tier AMG candidates applied very broadly because of virtual interviewing, and are now "hogging" all the interview slots. I haven't gotten a single interview that wasn't from a direct referral. The Program Directors must know that these top tier candidates won't realistically match to their mid-tier program though, right?

For GI, an AMG with <220 isn’t impressive. Passing is around 200. I don’t think PD is asking for too much if they screen out <220 It’s not like they’re screening out 250.

Everyone wants to apply to 100 programs and then gets pissed off when they get screened out. You can’t expect a PD to review 500 applications.

I would play this like a waiter bringing out a wrong order to your table that you actually want...."you guys order the ultimate appetizer sampler?"

Assuming this is step 1 score? How much does step 3 matter anyway

like others have said before. Probably 50 top applicants with the same 20 invites and the programs don’t even know it.
Is it humanly possible to attend 20 interviews especially with a busy residency schedule? I suspect once they are satisfied they have heard from places they want, cancellations will ensue. Just a guess

Definitely depends on what rotation you're on. My program tries to put people on consult/elective for at least 2-4 weeks during interview season, and it's pretty easy to take unlimited days off during those rotations without even involving backup coverage
