exactly what I was thinking. Usually you will see 2 or 3 people match Derm or Neurosurgery but some of these classes have 5 NS and 6 Derm. At first I was wondering if they opened up more spots, but maybe the big name schools are just sending more students in these competitive specialties.

Usually, when I've looked at the match lists, the big name schools send lots of their students into IM or surgical subspecialties. I just feel like this year there has been an increase in Derm people from big schools. I mean, it would make sense...if you're interested in skin, it's probably the best job in medicine. Make money working 8-5 with no call. Probably a chill residency too if you don't mind studying at home.

Lord almighty that is a ridiculously good surgery match.

4 UCSF (!!), 2 Penn, NW, Michigan, Florida, Colorado, BIDMC + others.

Michigan always does impressively with surgery but they filled half of UCSFs incoming class this year - wild.

there's no great mystery, it just varies year to year with individual interests in the class. We sent less than half the number this year to derm compared to last. And then sent 9 to ophtho compared to 2. It's too hard to interpret raw numbers. What you actually want to know is: what % of students who applied got into the specialty of their choice, and how high did they all match on their ROL? Both also difficult to know without insider info. Also remember that class sizes can vary greatly between med schools, e.g. 50 at Dell/Mayo compared to ~170-180 at HMS/Penn.

match lists are a fun curiosity as a med student, but if youre an MS0 choosing b/w schools what you want to know from M4s at the schools you are considering is: Does the school support all applicants into any specialty? Do they make you compete against eachother unecessarily? When is AOA given and how is it determined, if at all? How is the MSPE formulated at this school? It doesn't matter how prestigious your school is if they individually rank all applicants into a certain specialty on the dept. chair letter and then make you look "worse" than everyone else in your class competing for the same specialty when on paper you are probably all within a hairline margin of eachother on the CV. Does the school give preferential treatment to its own students in its residency programs, thus ensuring that students are more likely to match at all?

match lists are a fun curiosity as a med student, but if youre an MS0 choosing b/w schools what you want to know from M4s at the schools you are considering is: Does the school support all applicants into any specialty? Do they make you compete against eachother unecessarily? When is AOA given and how is it determined, if at all? How is the MSPE formulated at this school? It doesn't matter how prestigious your school is if they individually rank all applicants into a certain specialty on the dept. chair letter and then make you look "worse" than everyone else in your class competing for the same specialty when on paper you are probably all within a hairline margin of eachother on the CV. Does the school give preferential treatment to its own students in its residency programs, thus ensuring that students are more likely to match at all?

In my opinion, you're missing a third component: what % of students who applied got into the specialty of their choice, what % of students received interviews at their top choices upon initial submission, and how high did they all match on their ROL.

One cannot list a program on his/her ROL if one never even received an interview invite. "Top" can also be defined in any manner, including by the applicant, but regardless this is impossible to ever decipher on a large scale.

It always boggles me every time I see someone reading 1 or 2 additional matches to the specialty they’re interested in, and their mouths salivate.

Look at specialties that take a bunch of students every year, and see where those students go. It’s not perfect, but a way better measure of what you’re probably looking for.

Fair enough - I actually completely agree with you. I don’t think analyzing match lists matter for personal success, but if people are going to do it, there are better ways to do so than looking at niche specialties that take few students. I also think that US News is a terrible ranking system, and have spoken ad nauseam on it.

My bad for over-reading, been seeing too many sdn posts.

Agreed. My good buddy with a stellar app ranked and matched at a program closer to home so he could be closer to his S/O- this program would be considered "low tier" (aka dox rankings which don't mean much honestly) over yale, cleveland clinic, NYU, etc.

Regional preference is huge.

Sorry if this is dumb question, but is there any reason why this list doesn't seem to match with the information Hopkins published about its match (https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/som.../our-students/match-day/match_day_2021.html)? They don't provide a list, but on their chart, they say that the top five specialties were 1. Internal Medicine, 2. Pediatrics, 3. Anesthesiology/Psychiatry, 4. OBGYN/Gen Surgery, 5. Emergency Med/Urology. Besides Internal Medicine, Peds, and Psych the lists don't seem to match. (Urology, for example, is def not #5 based on the list above.)

I went through the match list given to us one more time, and my list is correct. The website is wrong. It should read:
1. Internal medicine (20), 2. Pediatrics (10), 3. Psychiatry (9), 4. Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Ob/gyn (8), 5. ENT, Emergency Med (7)

Downstate grad (not in urology though).

Downstate VERY well connected urology wise and has fed students to some fantastic programs over the past 6-7 years. Strong culture of interest among the med students there to research and get involved early. Can see where else they've matched in the past here.

I concur. My cousin is a Downstate grad and urologist and I work on the the West Coast with another urologist who is a Downstate grad. Both graduated 20+ years ago though. They’ve traditionally had healthy numbers entering that specialty.

I said that you can't find this on their website. If that is not the case then go ahead and find me a link for it. It is for public distribution in that it was distributed internally to students and probably to applicants for this year.

Then why did you reply to me to begin with? This document has never been fully publicly distributed. Not all matches are published because students had the option to opt out. In past years posters had the courtesy to block off peoples names. If students knew that the entire match list with names would be splashed out on SDN maybe more would have chosen to opt out.

What can anyone possibly do with the names? If someone wants to find out what you matched it will eventually show up on doximity.

As it has been said previously, it's difficult to analyze match lists without considering the students' regional preferences. With that said, I am going to so this to educate the readers, as "strong" IM programs are different from "strong" peds programs (MGH, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and Yale, for example, have mediocre to okay peds programs, definitely not exceptional. Even JHH's peds program is surprisingly not all that). I am going to assume that there are no regional considerations for those matching outside of NY (which is not true since it could still be their home towns).

My verdict: It's good, not spectacular. No one matched to the "big 3" (Boston/BCRP [note: different program from MGH], CHOP, Cincinnati). Can't comment on the military program but Nationwide and UWash are solid programs possibly in the top 10, definitely in the top 20. Within NY, Montefiore and Columbia are great programs with solid reputation. I believe NYU as well but I am not 100% sure on that one. Another thing that makes the peds list good but not great is the lack of pediatric combined programs (other than IM: anesthesia, neuro, psych, genetics), which to me demonstrates that there is not enough exposure to pediatric sub-specialties.
