btw, there seems to be quite a few ppl from Hopkins that i met who are going to be at CCLCM this fall...what's up with hopkins and case

It essentially came down to two factors. First, I liked Case better. From what I've heard, the students there are extremely happy because there is no class rank during the first 2 years. Also, at Case I think you get a clinical education that parallels the education at Hopkins. Starting in your first year, you can really get your hands dirty at Metro. Plus, you have the option of doing any or all of your rotations at the Clinic. Second, Case did offer some benjamins. It wasn't quite full tuition, but it's still about $120,000 cheaper than Hopkins. I talked to a few physicians that graduated from both institutions, and the answer I got from all of them was that I should attend Case without any question. I think people tend to look at rankings and matchlists way too much. The fact is, Hopkins won't open any more doors than Case. If you're a good student and a good person, you can do whatever you want.

That reminds me that the Chief of Urology at Hopkins is a Case grad.

Very well said Regular!

What won over my heart is that whenever I talked to Case's people, from admission dean, to admin staff, to financial people, everybody was so willing to listen to me and so reasonable and warm... I felt I was sincerely respected... They didn't treat me like one another applicant... They remembered my name, they understood my circumstances, and I just felt comfortable with them... When I had my interview there, I just felt they weren't pretending anything or trying too hard on things. I liked that... I like places that don't put too much emphasis on formalities. :luck:

I'm glad to hear it. I couldn't agree more. It just wouldn't have meant the same thing when a Hopkins. . .no way. . .now how. . .even if my life depended on it. . .nobody, like me, had said it.

I, Myself, on the other hand, am going to case because I wear a house arrest anklet that does not permit me to leave Cleveland. Also, I like it.

Spartans ROCK!!!!! 😎

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how the grant/Case loans distribution look from year to year. Will the aid we get this year be similar in subsequent years, or will it change? If students with high academic credentials are given a lot of grant money initially to entice them to come, does Case then do a bait and switch and lower their grant amounts in future years since by then they would be locked in. The only students who would have stable aid are those who win those various scholarships that guarantees them so much money every year.

good question. I think unless you finances change dramatically, you school based aid wont change that much. If they did the bait and switch technique, I think there wouldve been a uproar a long time ago - and we would know about it.

I got a place today in Shaker Heights! It's a really cool one br. within walking distance of shaker square. If anyone is still looking, AZ management apparently doesn't have anything in shaker heights (well one two bedroom, which I imagine is gone by now), and they don't seem to have anything anywhere else on the east side--i could be wrong though...they were very confusing when I talked to them on the phone. When I called them earlier in the week and told them I wanted a place near Case, they said that the Fairhill Apts/Gardens were the only ones...that two br was the last thing left.
I got my place through Montlack. The only problem is the building has only one washing machine (!?). They seem to still have several places, and i think more will open in june.
on a related note: It was FREEZING in Cleveland today. I wore shorts and a polo thinking it would be 80. more like 50!

rest assured, it was unseasonably cold today (Saturday the 15th of may). Yesterday it was warm in the morning and early afternoon, but got colder in the late evening. For the few days before that, it has been hot as balls. This coming week should be warm and then I do not expect it to go down again until September.

Where is this apartment off of shaker square. I looked at an apartment once right off the square. It was in a long, low red brick building. Very inexpensive, as I recall. Shaker Square is nice - plenty of places to eat and do stuff (good bookstore on the square, as well as a great Mexican place).

Good luck everybody.

are you living alone?

exmike--living alone, yeah...its a one bedroom. $550 a month plus $30/mo. for garage parking ($10 for outdoor--first come, first serve.) they pay for water, heat and gas, and I have to pay the electricity. It's about what my sister is paying in cinci for a one br, and i think this place is a bit nicer (though the bathrooms are comparable...ugly yellow and brown tiles, small...) the kitchen is also small, but i usually just use the microwave. My philosophy is (and my sister, who is a MS3 at cinci, will verify this) unless you know your roomate well, it's probably better to get your own place. Keep in mind that med school classes tend to be too close for comfort as it is, and you may find you need a "private retreat."

Judd...the apt is one of the Colony Apts. It's right across the street from the trolly track. It's a red brick place, but not very big.

Oh, another place to consider is university circle inc. they have newly renovated places literally within view of the med school. very nice, but the prices ranged from $640 for an efficiency to $680 for a 1 br with a good view of the peter b lewis building.

Well just found out my cousin got in USC dental so it looks like I wont be living with her.

I'd like to live alone but I think its more efficient to have a roommate. Any non smoking, shoes off indoor, clean people want to live with me??!?

Ah, you had me until the "shoes off indoors" bit. I can't tolerate the feeling of my pants legs under my feet. It's just one of those things.

Here's a link to the video of the white coat ceremony for the class of 2007:

http://mediswww.cwru.edu/video/wccermony.htm

This gives us incoming students a good inkling of what to expect.

For those of you who watched this video - why didn't the students (most of them) shake hands with the person who just helped them put the coat on?? They automatically and quickly turned to the next prof. or dean in the line and shook that person's hand instead... to be polite, shouldn't they shake the hand of the person who just helped them with the coat? I just want to know the rule here...

Mr Reddly You should really go to the ceremony. Last years was really nice and they had a great speaker. The talk about how you make the transition to patient care and how you are now their collegue, dont believe it though.

Mr Reddly said:
I was wondering... Is that a required event? Will they know if you kinda sorta miss it... totally on accident of course. 😉
I guess if you have a stand-in for when they hand out white coats you won't be missed. Although, people are going to be scratching their heads when they look at the class picture and they see somebody they don't recognize. 🙂

We can be the first class to shake hands with the person who puts our coat on for us. you first. 😛

Any wait list movement? I am anxiously waiting for some decision.

im on the waitlist, but havent heard anything.... im praying that i get an acceptance soon, but if not i will be at cinci in the fall, which I am stoked about anyways.
I had another LOR sent to case, maybe it will help!

Hey everyone!
I don't remember if someone already posted this, but I found the old survival guide online and thought it might be helpful to you new folks to the thread (as well as the oldsters among us). I think its from 2002...

Student Survival Guide

If you haven't already found a place to live during school, I would suggest that you go look within the next 2-3 weeks. I went this past weekend and found a great place. Nicely done efficiency, clean & safe building, 5 minute casual walk to school, free parking, and only $425/month. I think the best deals are available now because students are ending their leases soon.

Did you have to start your lease as of June 1st?

Also, what buildings did you look at - what was "really" walking distance, what looked really grungy, etc?

Mine starts in July whenever I want, and it's pro-rated for that month. My rent is 550 a month, so for example--if i move in july 15th, I pay 275 for July.

Oldtimer--
what rental company is it? is the apartment in cleveland heights?

I'm starting my lease on Aug 1. The current tenant is still living in that apartment. He should be moving out within a month. The landlord is a really nice and cool guy. The location is great because it's literally a block away from the medical school. According to Yahoo, it's only 0.3 miles away. I timed myself and could walk the distance in 5 minutes.

Another apartment complex that I liked a lot is at 10820-22 Carnegie Ave. You can get a 1 BR apartment that has a decent size living room, bathroom, and kitchen for $525/month. The apartment is nice and clean. No utilities are included. The apartment complex looks safe. The parking is also free. It's about a 6 minute walk to the medical school. Call Brian at Primo Management at (216) 407-8214 or (216) 407-8216.

You might want to also look at some of the apartment complexes on Overlook Rd. I've heard that many medical students live along this road. In fact, my student host when I interviewed lives in one of the complexes. The downside of living here for me was that it was a lot farther (1.1. - 1.7 miles according to Yahoo and it took me a good 15 minutes of walking from the medical school, not to mention that big a$$ hill to walk up) and the rent is higher (expect to pay at least $500).

I jotted down a bunch of phone numbers to contact for the Overlook complexes:

(in descending order of proxity to school)
2415 Overlook: 216-320-5800
2441 Overlook: 440-446-0803
2440 Overlook: 216-751-7103
2473 Overlook: 321-4508 (area code either 216 or 440)
2477 Overlook: 216-932-4832
2536 Overlook: 440-446-0803
2540 Overlook: 216-932-4832

Good luck apartment hunting!

according to Judd, parking passes are hard to come by 🙁

Hey oldtimer, what was the cost for a 2 bedroom and a 3 bedroom (do they have those?).

exmike, I'll be looking outside and driving IF viable.
Thinking about looking into rental costs of houses (etc) in the vicinity instead of apartments within walking distance if possible.

exmike said:

I am - preferably the Shaker Square area. But, I am going to CCLCM, and the housing options in that immediate neighborhood are not very spectacular 😉

If anyone is looking for someone to share housing away from campus, PM me - I'm hoping to buy a two bedroom condo, and I'd like a housemate!

I just got a letter today from Case urging me to choose between case and another school within a week, or I'll lost my spot at Case. the letter was dated 5/20, but it didn't come until late this afternoon (5/25). And I already sent in a withdrawal letter to the other school almost a month ago. Could there be something wrong? I'm a bit worried.

Worry not. I got the same letter, which referenced a school I withdrew from some time ago. I simply called the woman mentioned in the letter and informed her of my intent. She was very nice. Just call her tomorrow and tell her where you are going. She told me that it is common for some other schools simply not to inform AMCAS that you have withdrawn. They know this - so relax.

Thanks Judd! I called and everything is fine now! That was really scary. Ellen was very nice and I'm feeling much better now! See you in August!

When are you going to switch from "likely" to "intended"?

hey,

has anybody who is doing financial aid at Case filled out this fabled "master promissory note" for federal money borrowed through Case? I have not heard a word from them on this issue since I did the entrance interview.

exmike, where are you still on the waitlist at?
