haha yeah, i hated going down there to pick up my test that they spread out on those folding tables outside. Sometimes you'd see a 40% peek out and you'd freak out that it was yours.

It was Mudd hall, as in Seely Mudd. I dont miss that hall one bit.

It seems to be right across from campus (an in a garage no less) but 68$ a month.
We now can / 'have to' reserve the spot online at http://parking.case.edu . It needs our Last name and our social security number for id. (the medschool has put our names into the system so it's good to go.

Also, a packet was sent out yesterday from the admin office... Don't know what's in it, but it's comming.

May I answer this Q for you? 53 is the nearest lot we can get. It's across the street from med school, and next to the school gym.

where is that venue, from case? in august, the cure (with a bunch of other cool bands) are coming there, and a few days later is lollapolooza, which has its best lineup in 10 years.

It's in Cuyahoga Falls - hidden deeply in some wooded valley. 40-60 min. drive from Cleveland.
I got lawn seats - I'll have picnic there while watching them! oops, it's Blink 182, not 128! They have a bunch of people lined up for this summer!!

Here are the prices for Waldorf from last year. I would probably add $20-$30 to each price for this year.

The prices include heat and A/C. There's outdoor parking for free and indoor parking for $45/month.
 
If we're moving to Case from another state, does anyone know if we can keep our current state residency info (driver's license, license plates, voter registration, etc) for all 4 years or do we have to switch over to Ohio? Any benefit to being an Ohio resident, i.e., lower taxes, lower school costs, helping the Democrats win Ohio, etc?

Yep...they have a new greatest hits album (with three new songs) and are touring this summer as van hagar. sorta ticks me of that's its a greatest hits, because they already have a live album (which is for all intents and purposes a greatest hits) and a greatest hits vol. 1. wish eddie would just make an instrumental album.
as a guitar player, I don't care much about the singer/vocals/lyrics, but hagar is a great guitarist in his own right, so he's ok by me (although i think his playing is just a little overshadowed in the band 😉 )
 
So I'm heading over to cleveland tomorrow (and friday) to look at apartments, Any places besides the triangle and waldorf that I need to look at?
 
First stop = admin office to get a copy of the packet they sent you (if you haven't gotten it yet it has housing info), also cuz they have a housing list... I glanced at it briefly.

I would look at the apartments up and down Overlook, that's where a lot of people live. it's a lot cheaper and the apartments are bigger than waldorf (though older) and within walking distance (10-25 minutes) to school.

Last night I had dinner at the Mongolian BBQ in Coventry Village - Coventry road at Euclid Heights Blvd area, there are quite a few restaurants, bars and shops, a lot of college looking people hang around. And there are many smaller older apartment buildings along Euclid Heights Blvd near Coventry. It's around 2 miles to Case.

Also, I sometimes go to Aladdin for dinner on Cedar Road ( connecting with Fairmount). There is a big Starbucks cafe full of Case students, and you have to try the Gelato place there, that's my favorite ice cream store. Yum!! Giant Eagle grocery store is across the street. There is a jazz bar prettyy good too. There's also a billiard hall and bar. I think Overlook leads to that area, and many older apartment buildings along Overlook. There are quite a few houses for rent too. That area is only about 1 mile to case. But it's still more convenient to have a car! You probably want to buy at least two weeks stuff when you go gocery shopping!

The Reserve Square apt is right off chester, a beeline to Case from downtown. They have 2bdr for about 1k, but as a case student you pay no app or deposit fee and you get 10% off and all utilities are included. It is exactly a 10 minute drive to campus which isn't bad. The whole setup at Reserve Square is pretty shnazzy with an indoor market and all that good stuff.

waldfor was exactly what i heard it would be. And old and dingy but overall clean apt packed with med students. It seems like the walk up that hill would be a little dangerous in the winter - slippery slope and all. And walking up that hill during hot summers probably isnt fun. 1k for a 2bdr

I was impressed with University Circle, the newly renovated place right next to the med campus. They are really nice and the 1bdr is very very roomy. The best part was that it was literally 3 minutes from the closest med buildig which means you can walk indoors to class during the winter. I think that'll be key for my so cali warm weather behind!

It was sooo gloomy all day, just like my interview day. I hope it isnt like that all the time there!
 
I'm actually thinking about living out in North Olmsted (off the 480 west of the airport) or Westlake (west of the airport (North of N Olmsted, off the 90... or was it the 2)... It feels much more like the california suburbia that I'm used to. Off the 77 and south of the 480 was also suggested to me as a nice suburb... Dunno. There's a mag in the admissions office that talks about the different suburbs.

Anyone know of better burbs to live in with newish housing?

Anyone know what the commute is like during the school year during the time I would have to be on the road to get to class? (480->71->90->322)

That sounds like a 30-40 minute drive daily. I don't know if you want to be doing that for four years.
 
It is. I'm from Cali! Driving calms me. When I'm freaked out, I hop in my car.
20 min commute to HS.
45-50 min commute to work for the past 3 years...

But you're right. If there is a closer suburb, someone let me know.
I might look off of 322 but further east of campus than you.

Mike did you check out the neighborhood around the Reserve Square you mentioned? I don't know where that it, but I know there are some less safe parts along Chester road. I think east side of Case (Cleveland heights, university heights, shaker heights) is very safe, west side of Case is downtown, just like many major cities' downtown, not as safe as I would like.

The recent gloominess isn't very typical, but right on the great lake, we have to expect some rain...

on West side, North Olmsted is a little bit older. Westlake is much nicer, with many expensive new houses being built. But it takes 40-45 min. to drive to Case - going on I-90, then go onto Martin Luther King (slow drive, 25 mph, through Wade Park), then onto Euclid Ave, then Case. There are a bunch of appartments near the I-90 westlake exit, along Detroit road. Much newer and pretty inexpensive, and they have pool, gym etc. But I don't think it's a short drive to school though, as it's not as diverse or cultural as east side...

On east side, farther out is Beachwood, a nicer and newer sub. There are some nice apartment complexes, but more expensive. There are more upper scale malls, but it's farther away than Cleveland heights, university heights, and shaker heights.

I live in Rocky River (and will continue to). This is two suburbs away from Cleveland on the West side (it goes Cleveland > Lakewood > Rocky River > Westlake). Rocky River has many many many older smaller apartment buildings (in fact, there are two right at the end of my residential street) with two bedrooms in the $700 range as well as some larger more modern "McPartments", which costs more.

North Olmestead (a bit south of Rocky River and on a different highway) also has a large proportion of high rise apartments and some newer McPartments (such as Butternut Ridge off of 480 and across from the big mall). Westlake is a "newer" suburb and has many more of the larger McPartment complexes - such as those that line 90.

Lakewood is the closest suburb to Cleveland on the west side. It looks very similar to Cleveland Heights, with many older and smaller apartment buildings (and if you are rich, a few high rises on the lake).

If I were going to live on the west side, I would live in either lakewood, Rocky River, Bay Village or Westlake (all of which more or less border the lake and have I-90 run through them) rather than the more southerly North Olmsted (and those on I-480). The reason being that I-90 is a straight shoot into downtown and from there you can take Chester of Euclid right into campus. Likewise, you can take I-90 past downtown and all the way to MLK blvd, which is also a straight shoot into campus. Both routes from Rocky River take about 25 minutes - no problem. If you live in a suburb on I-480, you have to take that to I-71 into downtown, which takes longer and is much more congested at rush hour.

Anyway, I'm commuting into campus from Rocky River, and quite frankly I like the drive. A few minutes to myself. The only time it sucks is when there is sleet or 2 feet of snow on the ground.

Reserve Square is right downtown (on the border of downtown, anyway). It's not particularly unsafe (at least not during the day), but after dark the city is dead and desserted. Just something to keep in mind. I don't favor living downtown. The reason being that it is not yet residential (despite all the wearhouse conversions) and therefore does not really support grocery stores, video stores, etc. The grocery store in Reserve Square is EXPENSIVE!!!!!

Why do you call larger more modern apartments "McPartments"?

I think what I've decided to do is to not actually find a place at this time. The hotel I'm in (in N Olmsted) does extended living for 32 a night. That's less that 1K a month with all amenities included (ac, fridge, cable,wireless internet, etc). When I'm certain I'll be at Case, then I'll figure out where to be. I've got parking now and that's the important thing... I just don't want to make a commitment on place and location after being here for less than a week.

I think I'll take a drive through / into Rocky River tonight or tomorrow. 🙂
 
Ya Mike, for the 2 days before you arrived, it was bright and hot. The two days before that, it was beautiful. Right now, it's slightly overcase but decent.

Ha!!

It's a term in some usage around here to refer to the super large tract housing going up (and common) in the wester and far eastern suburbs of Cleveland. These are very large, cookie-cutter, vinyl clad homes that sprout like weeds in the rural(istic) suburbs of Cleveland (and elsewhere). We call them "McMansions" (I think that is a pretty ubiquitous term nowadays). I refer to the newer, multi-unit, low rise, vinyl clad (with brick accent, of course) apartment building as McPartments for the same reasons. They are large and corporate and owned by out-of-state lords and they pop up wherever there is room.

That's not to say I oppose them (I almost always prefer them to older smaller apartment buildings because of ammenities and condition), but I'd be less than truthful if I said I prefered McMansions to a smaller, quality 70 year old brick center-hall colonials (spoken from my ugly, aluminum clad - blehc!!! - 80 year old garrison colonial).

Reddly, you missed the Indians game with Neil and I on tuesday. We left you a few messages on your cell (or something). I got free tickets from my wife's company. Third row from the field. When we were seated, people standing on the field were at eye level with us. Best seats I have ever sat in. I could smell the third base coach when he farted.

Can you tell me what preorientation is? i didnt get the pack yet. I would consider going earlier to meet some of you guys before hand and settling in.

preorientation is on august 4th at 1, and it consists of a lunch, "what to expect in first year" discussion, and an optional tour of the school.

Did the waitlist move at all this year? I haven't heard of anyone getting off. Last year, no one got in from the waitlist because like 10 students had to repeat first year. I wonder what's keeping the waitlist from moving this year.

So... 7% of the class failed and had to repeat. Is this normal?

As for WL movement, I'm going to assume that a number of Case people are from Cali. And, it doesn't seem like alot of movement has happened there... Davis was way late and that might be impacting them... I'm still hopeful.

I'm under the impression that the fail rates hover around 5% so 7% is within the normal range. For example, 17 of georgetown's 160 students either failed or left after year 1 last year.

They need to talk to the CCLCM folks. And Case needs to also learn how to make nicer brochures --> see the CCLCM one for an example of how it's really done.
