Someone had to do it....just received my orientation packet this week and am looking forward to meeting everyone that 2nd week of August.

Right now I'm working at St. Vincent's hospital in Toledo Ohio in the microbiology department as a Medical Technologist, and trying to enjoy what free time we have left before the books start to take over. It is going to be here before we know it. I'm ready to move to Iowa, but I will always say GO BUCKS!

Welcome to the family fly, you'll love it next year. Just be ready to study.

Welcome to medical school! Be sure and find some time to relax this summer so you are ready to go in August. If any of you new DMUers have any questions about moving to Des Moines or anything else post it here and I am sure you'll get an answer.

Welcome Class of 2010. You have made a very wise decision in choosing DMU/CPMS. It is an excellent program that will prepare you well.

Remember we are THE College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. No other school can claim that.

what do you guys know about signature place apartments? Can any of you give me some ideas on where to live in the west Des Moines area? Also, What do you guys do for fun in des Moines. Thanks.

Right on, I'm graduating with a Microbio degree in about 2 weeks. Starting at DMU too. Can't wait. I hear Des Moines is a nice city, but I am also wondering what there is to do there for fun? I'm looking at an apartment in Downtown Des Moines, any comments? Let's learn about some feet!!

Downtown is nice and close to the campus, also you are going in the opposite direction of rush hour traffic so a big plus. I'm not an expert on apartments in that area. As for West Des Moines, onco are you going to be living by yourself? If you are married or plan on living w/ someone, I'm a big fan of Maple Groove Villas. Cheap, nice townhomes. They are rent controlled so one person in the household must have a job, and the total income must be below some amount. I'm not sure on all of the details but if you google Maple Groove, you can find the info. If not, the only other advice I'd give is stay away from Wellington. Bad bad place. I did not live their but I have heard lots of bad stories.

Here's a website that you might look at: http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/IA-West-Des-Moines.html

I haven't received my orientation packet yet. 🙁 Then again, I didn't receive my interview packet BEFORE my interview either...

I'm excited (yet nervous!) for next year!! I got my BSc in Occupational Therapy in 2005 from the University of Alberta. This past year I took school part-time in order to get more "sciency" courses under my belt.

I know I'm being a complete nerd - but are you guys planning to read up on anything over the summer? I have good intentions to look over biochem and anatomy - but I have a feeling I'm never actually going to get to it. 😛 One thing I think I should "study" is Celsius --> Farenheit conversions and the Imperial system. 😕

I am reading a lot but more for fun than anything else. I was thinking about skimming over notes to maybe get back into the mode, but we really won't know what to focus on (that is my thought process anyways)...so going over notes is lower on the priority list. Instead I am going to try to hang out and have as much fun as possible.

I have a lot of things lined up, pearl jam concert, cubs game during memorial day, and Vegas trip in July (maybe I can win some money to help with tuition  )

I'm also going to try to get in a lot of golf before august, and it looks like there are a lot of courses in des moines....thats an added bonus.

Hi,
I will also be attending DMU this fall. Can't wait to meet everyone during orientation!

I was planning on just looking over anatomy and some biochem, but pretty much just taking it easy. We'll learn all that stuff, seems over bearing to start it when we really don't know the emphasis. Golf sounds great. Plus, if you've never been to a Pearl Jam concert-go, it's the most amazing concert experience you can ever have. Can't wait to meet everyone also.

For anatomy go over everything. We covered everything this year. Biochemistry is a very well taught class. They had the best notes we have had this year. If you have a Biochem book from undergrad just skim through it a bit and pick up the basics. But most of all enjoy the summer because you will be working your tails off soon enough.

I'll also be in the incoming podiatry class at Des Moines this August, I'm taking a couple filler classes this spring term so I can get my BS. Right now one of them is personal health with a bunch of football players that are all PE majors.....hmm, I'm thinking they're taking a spring class so they can be eligible to play ball this upcoming fall.

Can't wait to start...I could but well.....you know

By the way DMU students get a 30% discount at all the Des Moines public courses! It's a pretty good deal, but it sometimes makes it hard to stay in the library on a beautiful afternoon. If any of you new guys are around and want to join some of us third years for a round just let me know.

Hey everyone! I am also starting at DMU this coming August...Class of 2010 here we come!!!!

Right now I'm focusing on a finding a place to live, and I'm finding it an overwhelming challenge. Can any of you suggest a good place for me and my spouse to check out??? How are the 3000 Grand?? I would like a place that I could either walk or bike to the school from?

Hey "purfexshun" I am from Calgary! Looks like the Canadians are taking over!!! Look forward to meeting you! What are your plans for moving? Right now I think I am going to rent a moving fan and drive, I was told it is about a 20 hour trek?? Maybe we could caravan it? By the way, even though I am a true (hardcore) Flames fan, I am cheering the Oil these days. Hope you guys make it to the dance, love to see them there!

Just an FYI for you married new students you may also want to consider buying a townhome or house. My wife and I bought a house about 3 miles from campus and it's great. Our monthly mortage payments are less than the rent at 3000 grand apartments and even if we are only able to sell the house for what we paid for it it is like living rent free for four years. There are quite a few people in my class who also bought and are happy with the decision. As long as you are in the mid-west where real estate is cheap you might as well take advantage of it. As for apartments there are a lot of them within walking distance and the best way to decide which one you like is to just make a weekend trip down here and check them out. If anyone has any questions about buying for the first time let me know. It can be kind of intimidating at first, but well worth it.

Hi CanPod, you didn't happen to have your interview at the end of January did you?

As for moving, right now I think my parents are going to fly down with me to help me set up and I'm gonna try stuffing everything into 5-6 suitcases! I don't know how I'm going to do it though! I think I'm going to have to leave many of my clothes behind 🙁 ... but hey, maybe it's an excuse to get tons of new stuff!

Have you heard/done anything about a US student visa yet?? I emailed Meghan about a month and a half ago and she told me some "Multicultural Affairs" dude would contact me soon. I haven't heard anything yet though so I'm getting kind of worried...

Haha, I can't believe how well the Oilers are doing this year. It's absolutely crazy!!!!!!!

3G is pretty nice. I would suggest you look at Grand Colony. It is within walking distance and most of the units have been remodeled in the past few years. I also had several classmates at the Imperial. They seemed to like it. I would shy away from Terrace Hill.

Relax! Enjoy your summer. There will be plenty of studying in your future. The last thing you need to do is burn yourself out before you start.

Hey Golfers,

Forget the Des Moines public courses. They are short, expensive, and lack creativity. The best track for the money is in Panora, a small town roughly 40 minutes west of Des Moines. Lake Panorama National is a resort course with very little play. It is just over 7000 yards from the tips and in really good shape. Depending on the season, there is an all day rate that is very reasonable. Right now it is $35 all day with a cart. The course has a lot of character and rarely plays the same way twice due to Iowa's wind. If you go, you have to eat at PJ's in Panora. It is a little mom and pop restaurant with great food at low prices (Bring cash, they don't take charge cards). Another great course is Rolling Hills. This course is located just south of Norwalk on whatever highway 63rd street becomes. It is short, but in incredible condition. There is a 9 hole course with an adjacent 9 hole par 3. The nine holer is $20 for 18 with cart and I think the 3 par is $10. The guy who runs it is named Randy. He will frequently let you on the par 3 for nothing if you have played the big course. This course is great for you first years out there. There is very little play so you can get your rounds in pretty quickly.

FYI. To all of the first years looking for an apartment, Ankeny is a suburb that is just north of Des Moines. The drive is about the same as West Des Moines, maybe a little faster. It is a really nice area just off of the I-35. You might look to see what is that area also.

Hi,
I just had a quick question pertaining to the usual dress during school at DMU. Is professional dress required in the classroom and such, or can you go to class in sweats and a t-shirt, or anything in between? Just curious so I can be better prepared for next year. Thanks for your help.

There is a dress code but it is not super strict. I usually go in a tshirt and jeans. If you do want to dress a little more professional, wear a polo. You will need to dress professionally anytime you have a SPAL or work in the clinic. A lot of people wear hats (I'm guilty) but I would suggest not wearing hats in class. If you wear it do class, take it off while the lecture is speaking.

now I'm disappointed, I thought there wasn't really a strict dress code and I could just show up naked, I thought it would be ok as long as I had my laptop....well so much for that idea I guess

That is what Ilizrob wears to class. So you might want to call each other so you don't wear the same color socks.

thanks for the heads up, I usually rock the flip flops but that will have to end later when it starts getting cold out.

Or are you talking about socks as in classic red hot chili peppers
