This is a low base to live and work in North Dakota. You could def negotiate up to 275K easily. But it should be at least 300K offer to work somewhere like that. The hospital makes mad money off podiatry.

Sounds like my current gig. Great opportunity!
Lol, only 100 miles to Fargo or to Bismark!

That is good money for only seeing that tiny volume... 3000pts/yr + 200 surg proc/yr is about what I do.... very lax.
That climate/area is simply horrid, though. It'd be a bit like an IHS job with slow clinic and boring area... but a bit busier and bit higher pay and less nonsense. It's still low end pay for pod hospital FTE job, and although COL is certainly low, the place is absolutely nobody's dream location. They should pay more to attract/keep anyone decent... but, podiatry. They will get applications regardless.

California but not super expensive area....still that salary is low

Yeah, prob only gets 200-300 apps for that one.

They’ll fill the position but they won’t get flooded with applications. You can’t list a top end salary of $225k in Modesto and expect a ton of interest. But your point stands. They’d get 0 MD/DO applications if they offered sub median MGMA compensation for physician openings. Podiatry on the other hand will form a small line (not even 100 people will apply), for this one.

I’ve seen people take jobs that seemed awesome at first but turned out to be a total grind—either the pay didn’t match the workload, or the promises about bonuses and hours were way off. So, it’s super important to ask about stuff like bonuses, hours, and what others in the same role have made before you commit.
If you’re open to trying something different, I came across a role as a dialysis technician with a job outlook is 11%. It’s growing faster than a lot of jobs and has some good opportunities to move up. Might be worth checking out if you’re thinking about switching things up.

For the area, the salary seems to be far below market rate.

I’ve seen people take jobs that seemed awesome at first but turned out to be a total grind—either the pay didn’t match the workload, or the promises about bonuses and hours were way off.
I have seen many a DPM take jobs that seem not-so-great at first... then turned out to be a total grind or even lower pay than advertised. 🙂

Regardless of pay, calling another man "my boss" - esp after over a decade of school - just doesn't appeal to a lot of ppl after awhile. Dunno. It is semi-palatable (for awhile) if the boss runs the office well and supports and pays the doc reasonable. After a bit of time, it's just not fun to have someone working less than you and getting paid a chunk of your production, though... even if they are cool.

...for any pod job, it's pretty much the owner/manger that makes or breaks it if employed job, it's the call/supervisor if hospital employ job, or the payers/saturation deciding success level if solo/owner PP.

Getting paid as an employee is hard enough in podiatry, but remember that even a fair/good pay job opening is open for a reason. Many pod PP/supergroup jobs are fine enough until they yank your base (mostly/only bonus) and you realize it's difficult to take any time off without taking a pay cut. Same for hospital jobs... often ok until another admins change or until another pod leaves and you're taking too much call... or until they "switch" your best support staff to ortho or OB or ER or whatever other dept.

A whole lot of podiatry (and doc jobs in general) jobs are just dreadful with terrible staff/management for your assist/scheduling (VA notoriously, but also some PP or hospital gigs). It drove me crazy to be working with incompetent ppl off the street... then managers re-assigning any who you finally train to be adequate or who manage to show up reliable and on time. Forget that.

You're correct, sir. It's difficult to find a job paying ~200k in California now, especially for newbie!
I have had a few ppl tell me they're accepting a low pay job to stay in Calif (would be low pay in midwest, terrible salary in CA). It's sad. I advise them to keep looking... go unemployed for a couple months if needed... even do a fellowship to buy time (yuck). It's very saturated, though.

Some of them have had a bit of a bait-n-switch pulled with a verbal agreement (or even a written) that changed 11th hour as they finish training. Crazy... but I think a lot of employers are just wise to how many apps they get for podiatry jobs.

The private PP jobs there generally pay same as most other places (not adjust for the much higher COL... they don't need to). I had talked to a few owners in central Cali about buy in/out years back, and they both offered me terrible associate contracts that I didn't think would attract anyone at all (they both did find people... one fellowship trained at a top fellowship).

You're correct, sir. It's difficult to find a job paying ~200k in California now, especially for newbie!
There is a large hospital system in California paying 300k in rural LCOL (lower...at least in California terms - not LCOL north Dakota terms) areas....source: trust me bro. And online. That's how I found my most recent job - practice match/link. Sometimes it's just that easy.

Wenatchee-East Wenatchee is 100,000+ people when you include the Quincy, Leavenworth, Entiat, Waterville, etc. communities that would feed it. Gotta be 50-60k just in city limits. Plenty of operative pathology.

Is there really *one* podiatry job up on a ACFAS website podiatrycareers.org right now?
I have never seen that before... usually 5-25 at any time.
I saw it is a website minor re-design, so making sure I don't have settings on wrong or something. 🙁

And, naturally in podiatry in 2024, the one job listed has "Fellowship preferred"... despite no docs in the group having done one. 🤣

I'm not sure what you're looking at. There are plenty of jobs posted. See the two I screen shot. One is looking for a psychiatrist and the other advertises to practice where you vacation in Saint Albans, Vermont.

The one I found advertises "6 figure base salary" like it's a selling point. And I'm sure that 6 figures means the low 100s.

Is it the 1950s still?

Yeah, I found it now... it put some filter on for my zip code, so I only saw one. It has 28 or so when I take off filter.

Not sure that's "plenty" for 500 or 600+ residency grads a year, but better than one. 😀

Probably Susanville & Banner Health. Banner was giving out 60k bonuses in 2018....and 100k student loan payback. Reno is a great city. Yes California taxes but thats the cost of not living in a sh**hole like Texas...

Texas (and other red states) are the best states to be a doctor imo, just look at litigation laws/limitations compared with blue. Also taxes…

Sounds like you don't live in Texas. There is more to life than "but ma taxes"

Also have fun with Texas property taxes

I previously lived in Texas (and liked it there) and now live in a state that is pretty similar to it. California taxes are absurd compared to Texas even considering property taxes. Also take into account how much people can sue you for and how easy they make it to sue - states like Texas have it much better for docs

Practicing medicine...sure. Living a healthy active outdoor lifestyle....not so much

anyways, this a good job with student loan payback. Better than associate life in Philly or NYC

What happened to the residency they used to have?

I hope that pays well.
The posting states that it's a research/academic position; that usually means a lesser salary compared to other practice types if MD/DO jobs are any indication. Likely still better than some of the worst PP offenders, but overall a shame - they require ABFAS certification, and taking any kind of lesser pay after suffering for certification would be a huge loss of ROI...but I guess there's the feeling of accomplishment of having gotten an academic position
