I don't know if acceptance date makes a difference -- i was accepted in late December/early January but I also got my letter yesterday, detailing my Stafford award. I think it all depends on when you submitted your FAFSA and your NYCOM fin. aid papers to their office.

But then today, I got a BILL for the remaining amount of tuition/fees that will need to be paid. I don't understand. Why don't they wait and see if Grad PLUS goes through? Did anyone else get a bill for something around $18,000??

I got a bill for 17,666.50. According to the other pg included with the bill, this is 1/2 of the tuition, 1/2 of medical insurance, and 100% of dental insurance and fees. Will NYCOM automatically take this amount from Stafford, or will Sallie Mae send me a check and then I have to cut NYCOM a check? Also, whats the process if we're already covered by health insurance through our parents? 😕

Hey,

My landlord has another property for rent in Hicksville,NY (about 10 mins from school) its a 3 bedrooom apartment with 1 bathroom. It has 3 parking spots, and its NEWLY remodeled. Hes an AWESOME landlord and does EVERYTHIGN for you and even brings you food sometimes! The rent is 900 per person but EVERYTHING is included and with heat prices being the way they are this is a steal. The area is nice as well. If you are interested in it PM me and I will give you his contact information to call him.

Thanks!

The funny thing is -- before they send us a random bill, shouldn't they at least send all first year students an updated, finalized list of charges, tuition, fees, insurance, and costs for the coming year?!

(This is assuming none of us have gotten such a list since the "sample" list on interview day....right?)

😕

Nv, i think Sallie Mae issues NYCOM the money and they only give you what's leftover for your personal expenses. And i read somewhere that if you are covered by health insurance already, it is very difficult to convince NYCOM that this is adequate equivalent coverage to what they are offering. So it might be an issue, but we'll just have to wait and see.... Any class of 2009 members have any thoughts on this?

I spoke to the person in charge of Health insurance last week and was told that we need to submit everything to them ASAP if using another insurance. Otherwise you will get a prorated portion refunded on what seemed to be a monthly basis.

Sucks we don't know the finalized info for tuition and fees but at least we have the opportunity to secure loans now based on estimates.

What exactly do we need to submit? This is quite bizarre and suspicious for us to send them forms and have some random person decide whether or not I can opt out of their health insurance. At my undergrad, for us to opt out all we had to do was sign an online waiver...

I'm not sure so you'll have to call them to get things rolling. good luck.

You guys shouldn't freak out over the bill. While it says you owe them like 38k, somewhere in the middle it should say your expected staffard / financial aid deduction. Subtract your staffard deduction off the final bill and pay that (or don't pay anything). If your bill does not menchan staffard anywhere, then you need to get it processed soon, before the bill's due date. [IF YOU GUYS DIDN'T DO THE STAFFARD/ FINANCIAL AID PAPERWORK YET, HURRY UP BEFORE THE END OF JUNE]
For some reason, NYCOM puts your financial aid in processing mode for a long time so it only shows up on the bill as a "potential" or "expected" deducton. Don't worry about it.
During orientation, they have a date set up for insurance paperwork if you have private insurance and they will deduct most of the insurance costs if you have a good insurance. Bring a copy of both sides of your insurance card. This is what I remember from last year.

Anyways, NYCOM is finished for us first years now. I PASSED. YEAAAAAY

Anyone else get their Stafford award letters and NOT have it posted as potential or actual FA on their bill? I'll call them Monday anyway but just curious. Thanks!

yanky5 -- Congrats on being done!!!! I think the issue is that some of us have sent in our FA paperwork, gotten our Stafford award letters.....but then we got a bill for an unclear amount of tuition and fees ($18-19K?) with nothing included about the potential/expected fin. aid award deduction. That's the weird thing. We know we got fin. aid, so somewhere along the line, the billing people forgot to talk to the FA people........i'll be calling on monday to find some answers as well 😉

Onto more important things.......where are the party hotspots for NYCOM students? Local bars? Bars/clubs in the city? Gimme some names 😛 Where do y'all let off steam?

So I just saw "Friends with Money" and I highly recommend it! Go see it if you're in the mood for a funny (but not laugh-out-loud) movie with a lot of character analysis. It reminded me a lot of Crash, except not as serious. Anyway, go see it! 👍 👍

(get it? two thumbs up? i'm so clever..)

Dude I just realized that I can't read. At the bottom of the Stafford award letters it says that the loan hasn't been disbursed yet - once it is, the Feds will send the $ to nycom. I can only assume that nycom will post the $ to our account once they get it. So it's a disbursement issue - the letter just says we're approved, not that we've gotten the money yet. No idea how long disbursement takes.

yeah, i have to call NYCOM on monday also,, I got the same bill you guys got but I am on a military scholarship. Everytime I try to tell them this the financial aid letter tells me to call the registrar, the registrar tells me to get a hold of the Bursar..etc. until i get some unlucky secretary from some office there whos brain i can hear catching on fire over the phone after i tell her my situation. Getting the right people at NYCOM and the ARMY to talk to each other and straighten this out is going to be exciting!

Right....
but......

the letters from sallie mae or the summary letter from NYCOM's FA office say disbursement is on 8/22/06 and 1/10/07 (i think, don't have it in front of me right now)

but the BILL we all received says first years have to pay up by August 1st.

huh??

🙄

I think the Aug 1st due date is for those individuals who can either afford to pay the tuition upfront or for those unfortunate individuals who, for some reason, were unable to get their loans approved before or on that date. I think for the most of us who have been approved, and sallie mae says that they will disburse the amounts, the situation is under control.

At my undergrad, the bursar took an approval of loan amounts as a promise/guarantee that the money will be disbursed to the school, and as a result gave the students credit on their bills. I am not sure about NYCOM, and I will ask about it.

And man! I still haven't received my finaid letter yet. Bah humbug!!

So I called up the Bursar office this morning to talk about my military scholarship situation again. I actually got the nicest secretary I have spoken to so far. She explained that the letters that went out with the Aug 1. bill due date were sent by the Bursar office controlled by NYIT (the office i called), and that NYCOM has a separate financial aid office and that all i need to do is have them flag my file that I am a scholarship recipeint and things would be straight. She didn't know if they had done this, but then she transferred me to a guy named Tom Riley who is the Associate Director of Financial aid at NYCOM (thus effectively allowing me to bypass the crazy financial aid lady) to see whats up. He seemed alot less friendly and when i asked him if he could check and see if they were aware of my status and if it was in my folder, he quickly and dismissively told me yes. So i guess Im OK... now i just need to condense the burecratic nonsense from the military side and I am square.

So if i had to guess, those of you with staffords and such in the pipeline that got the bill and got scared like me are in a similar situation. Things are most likely square from the NYCOM end but there was a lack of communication w/ NYIT thus these may not have shown as pending on this initial bill. I dont know.

I also called the FA dept (NYCOMs not NYIT- found nymber on website) and I was told by a very nice lady that even though distribution of the FA $$ wont be till mid aug. we wont have to pay the tuition dedline of Auf 1st. As long as your stafford loan and such was approved you dont have to worry about the bill you got.

I got my finaid award letter, but it only lists the federal stafford loans. Did anyone here apply for SDS or PCL and have it listed on their award letter?

y'know, i've gotten apts. in 5 major US cities, one with the only higher housing costs than NY, and lower vacancy rates sometimes, too, and i've never heard of having to pay some idiot over 1K just to let you have the damn apartment!

this is BS. i'm mad. any way around it??

Search for no-fee apartments on craigslist or apartments listed by owner on craigslist and newsday. I found my apartment without a broker fee 🙂.

I remember a financial aid lady told me that usually they only gave PCL to third and forth year medical school students at NYCOM.

I got my award letter yesterday too. I guess NYCOM takes two disbursements the first one being 8/22/06 for 17,398 and the second being on 1/10/07 for 17,397. The total being paid out to NYCOM on my bill is 34,795. From what i can figure that is the cost with the 1,500 deposit already deducted but i dont think that includes health insurance b/c from my understanding of my scholarship the military makes me pay health out of pocket, and then reimburses me for a portion of it. I think a year of the school health insurance is going to cost around (i dont remember exactly) 3,400. I think this puts our first year tuition at something like 39,695 if you take the school health. That doesnt include books and living expenses though.

Just in case anyone else was wondering (but I think I was the only one), NYCOM will award SDS when they received the funding for SDS. So far, they have not received any funding yet. And PCL is only for 3rd and 4th years.

I thought that was a rumor we debunked long ago.......?

I am pretty certain we have orientation from August 22nd through August 25th and classes begin on August 28th 🙂.

Theres really nothing to it, it seems. I spoke to a lovely woman today, Karen, who said if we wish to waive health insurance, bring the following to orientation:

your medical and dental insurance cards (for some, both are covered in one card) and the date that you will "age out" of your parents insurance plan. (For lots of people that age is 23 and so you may have to go through NYCOM anyway). If possible, try to bring documentation of the date that you age out. She'll have you fill out a waiver form once you get there.

For those waiving out for other reasons, you'll have to check with Karen on what documentation to bring. 516.686.3984.

Thanks to HG for the heads up.

Anyone here hooked?

Don't ruin it for me! I'm just getting into it - I'm still on Season I. I remember seeing the previews for the show a while back and thinking, wow what a dumb show, it's gonna tank. And now I need my LOST fix. 😎

My first post in the Official NYCOM class of 2010 thread since I'm officially accepted yesterday after being on the waitlist since my January interview!! I'm just curious, am I the youngest person accepted so far? I turned 21 on march 1st 😀

I agree, Lost is an amazing show. I watched Season 1 after it had already aired, and then I sped through Season 2, its really addicting! The way they show the background stories of each of the characters is well done, including the way some of them subtly appear in each others stories. It just keeps getting better...

Lost is a great show, goot hooked a couple weeks ago, now halfway through season one and counting...anyone find it a "coincidence" that the man-of-the-earth, spiritual hunter Locke, is the namesake of uber-philosophe John Locke?

damn i thought I was young at 22, you "barely-legals" got me beat.

Im a bit confused with these award letter posts..did you guys get two separate letters, one a bill and the other the stafford award letter? or were both of these in one letter? I have gotten only the bill, sans award. If they should have come together I fear something is wrong with my staff. paperwork, if not im still wondering when the second letter will come....sigh, this is compounded with the fact that i can NEVER reach the FA office. seems to be the only one that never picks up the phone. Does this lady take 6 our lunch breaks, or what? no matter the time or number of calls, or if i get connected through another office, she never picks up.....ughhhh gonna go vent by watching episode 15 of season 1.

What is it about this day??

Ok so I got TWO separate letters from Sallie Mae (one telling me about my subsidized Stafford award, the other about my unsubsidized), I also got ONE letter from the NYCOM Fin Aid office (it's a summary of the Sallie Mae stafford awards), and i got ONE bill from the BURSAR's office of NYIT.

Try calling in mid- morning, I usually get through around that time I think! Lunchtime is impossible!
I will PM you Clair Jacobi's direct # -- she either always picks up right away, or I've left her voicemails before and she's called me back the next day.

Ditto, thats exactly what I received. I called the NYCOM FA office and they told me not to worry about the bill. Also, I usually call early (9 am) and get someone right away.
