Ok so I got TWO separate letters from Sallie Mae (one telling me about my subsidized Stafford award, the other about my unsubsidized), I also got ONE letter from the NYCOM Fin Aid office (it's a summary of the Sallie Mae stafford awards), and i got ONE bill from the BURSAR's office of NYIT.

Try calling in mid- morning, I usually get through around that time I think! Lunchtime is impossible!
I will PM you Clair Jacobi's direct # -- she either always picks up right away, or I've left her voicemails before and she's called me back the next day.

You can also try email. Clair gets back to you on the same day or the next day. I emailed the address written on the finaid letters. [email protected], I believe.

My first post in the Official NYCOM class of 2010 thread since I'm officially accepted yesterday after being on the waitlist since my January interview!! I'm just curious, am I the youngest person accepted so far? I turned 21 on march 1st 😀

Congrats Man! I think you may be the youngest. Did that mean you took the MCAT when you barely 20 (apr 2005)...haha. I was actually going to take the 2003 MCAT and apply for the class of 2008 but i backed out of studying that January right before i was about to register for the test and extended college to the full 4 years. Im 22 now. Thats awesome though, youll be under 30 when you clear residency! Welcome.

Wow u are young and congrats.

What do you guys know about Westbury, is that a good place to live in or invest some money into buying a condo there?

Fromt he research I've done, Westbury is a decent place not as expensive/swanky as Roslyn or Glen Cove, but nice. The areas i've seen seem safe enough.

Westbury is really nice. Expensive to purchase a condo. Going rates are 420k for a one bedroom 480K+ for two BR. Co-ops are usually what people look into but their maintenance fees are high. I'm currently looking for either a co-op or condo 1 or two bedrooms. If you would like a roommate/ co-investor drop me an email and we can talk. This place that I found in Westbury is gorgeous. Great for nicer living and not expensive at all for what you get. If you want to check it out give drop me an email.

Turned 35 in March. I'm an old dog.

Thank god I'm not the only 30+ old fart on this thread!!!

Just called the FAO to check on the status of my award letters and got told they were waiting for a proof of citizenship from me. Of course, that was news to me. One more thing to keep in mind…

Well here's a random question from me. Did anybody get their NYCOM/NYIT e-mail addresses assigned yet? My school's alumni director wanted mine, although I am not in too much of a hurry to send it to her. I was just curious though. Thanks in advance. 😎

Does anyone know when they're going to update the Orientation 2006 or Class of 2010 links on the NYCOM website? I'm anxious to see what's going on when we get there!

Does anyone know if NYCOM has white coat ceremony? 🙂

Hello everyone I was recently accepted and wanted to introduce myself, my name is Lisa I will be 27 in about 2 weeks and will be moving up from NJ. Until this point in time I thought I was headed to OU-COM so I have not kept current with NYCOM threads. I will read through the old threads but I was wondering if you could direct me to the best way/place to look for housing and roomate options. THANKS!

Hey Guys, This is my first post on the official NYCOM 2010 thread 🙂 HELLO!

I know most people commute to NYCOM by car (hence the humongous parking lot) But do you know if any use public transportation to get there? I remember seeing bus stops on the way to the NYCOM campus on the day of my interview, so this made me curious if a car was necessary. Being raised in Brooklyn, I am only now getting my driver's license and am wondering if having a car is completely and utterly necessary. What y'all think?

Put it this way...my family has been on Long Island since the 50's when they moved out from Brooklyn. I don't know anyone in my family or friends that has ever used public transport on LI other than taking a train into the city. Is it completely necessary to buy a car, I'd say no because there are buses and you can call a cab. If you want to run down the block for a sanwich or up to the grocery store, do you really want to take a bus that stops probably not too close to where you want to go? Old Westbury is very different from Brooklyn where you can walk 5 minutes in any direction and find something to eat. I definitely reccommend you getting a car if that's feasable. It is practically a requirement to have a car on the Island. We're all going to be 200k in the hole when we graduate, what's another 5k for a cheap car

I think we were told that email addresses and full webboard access would not happen until orientation on August 21st.

Ahh I see I see. Well, I am not too anxious to send that e-mail to the alumni lady- although, I wish we did have Webboard access now- haha its all good though. Thanks! 🙂

How's everyone doing? I had a quick question regarding locations around NYCOM. I've been looking around at apartments and I was wondering if anyone knows how far East Meadow is from our campus? I checked on Google Maps and it claims 14 minutes, which isn't too bad- but I just wanted to ask here and see what the realistic time is haha. Once again, thanks in advance! 😀

I posted in the financial aid forum, but it seems like it's getting mostly looks and no replies or comments. I hope you guys can help me!

Hi everyone. I'm so confused, and I was wondering if you would be able to impart some advice.

I graduated from undergrad in 2004 and consolidated my loans with sallie mae, 21K (all fed subsidized). I worked for a year and paid off some of it. Then I started going to school (Jan 2006) for a masters program, which I took out another fed subsidized loan for, 2K. During the few months going to my masters program, I deferred my loan payments.

Now I will be attending school again in the Fall (Aug 2006), do I need to consolidate my previous loans again? Does consolidation waive my right to defer?

I thought I would just post here because I'm afraid of getting even more confused while talking to a loan rep.

Thank you so, so, so much in advance.

Juls

I know theres a shuttle bus on campus that takes u to islip but its suppose to be a 50 min ride, there were some stuff about taking the bus on the nyit old westbury page.

"And if you need to travel to Central Islip, luxury shuttle buses run between the two campuses throughout the day and evening. It's a 50-minute ride, so you'll have time to catch up on studying, socializing or sleep."

I know one of the buses I'm not sure if its the 20 or 22 that stops on campus only during the weekdays, but the buses aren't going to run as regular as it does in the city though so u should check out the schedule. I'm from the Bx and really didn't want to get a car b/c its a hassle in the city but bought one for school b/c everyone says u need it in LI

I think calling your lender directly and talking to a loan rep who handles your loan directly (as you seem to already be doing) is the best way to get a specific answer to your situation.

But here's what I think -- whenever you enter school, you should automatically defer your loan payments. So entering NYCOM willl put all your previous payments on hold. Since they are all subsidized, nothing will be accruing interest while you are in school, which is great.

You definitely don't need to consolidate your first set of undergrad loans again -- once consolidated at a rate of X, it stays consolidated at that rate. No, consolidation does NOT waive your right to deferment -- anyone who is in school at least part time can and does defer payments.

But one thing I don't quite understand -- did you consolidate your most recent 2K loans once you graduated from your master's program? Or is that still hanging out there waiting to be consolidated?
I am not sure but I think if you can consolidate these with your old loans, that might be best. But i'm not sure how that works so that would be a good question to ask your loan rep....

Hope that helps? 🙂

the webboard has 1 post in there about available housing which is posted in this thread. Those of us who have webboard access are only able to view the board and not post until we get email addresses. Also we can't view what the current students are posting.

Oh yeah, I did get general access into the webboard a while back- I committed to NYCOM back in february but I was a little late to join the community on here haha. I guess I was referring to the personal webboard access though. Its all good- we'll get more info soon enough. Thanks!

Just FYI, I called the Fin Aid office to ask them a couple of questions, and while I was at it, I asked them why first-years haven't received any list of costs, any breakdown of charges, etc.?

As usual, the FA lady said that information wouldn't be given out until - you guessed it -- until orientation.....

But I urged her to give me an amount. I mean it's not like they don't know how much NYCOM will cost this upcoming year 😉

So here it is = $43,277

That includes all tuition, all fees, as well as books and medical insurance. So basically everything pre-living expenses.

Oh and btw, I called the Admissions office too, and the woman I spoke to had NO IDEA if Orientation was one day, two days, one week, two weeks, whatever long......she told me to check the "website" that was sent to us in our information letter about when to show up, even though no new information has been posted there, like, ever

Info about orientation was posted this morning on the message board site! It looks like its the entire week

Is this a certain allowance for books we will need for first year?

i think they allot about $2,000 for books

(check page 16 of this thread for the breakdown of costs posted by someone from the class of 2009)

Hey,

I will be starting as a 1st year at NYCOM this August and was wondering if anyone else is looking for some roomates to share an apartment or house. I am 24, male, clean, quiet and will probably be studying at school a lot. Outside of school, I play a lot of basketball, tennis, and golf. I am into music, whether its underground hiphop, jazz, or american folk kinda stuff (yeah, I am all over the place with music).

I am interested in living in the areas of Port Washington, Great Neck, New Hyde Park, or even Floral Park.

Lemme know, I think if you click my name you can e-mail me.

i just took a look on the webboard and read all the orientation stuff and I must say it just hit me that I will be in medical school! how crazy?!

what exactly is Diagnostic equipment? and by uniforms do they mean scrubs b/c i believe i can get it cheaper then $125 or is it the white coat?

that posts starts off with "dear second year student". We do not get white coats until second year so that is probably what it is for. Also since this is a bill for a second year student it is a rough estimate of our bill. It also has expenses for boards and travel to boards that we will not have.

Hey,
have any of you received any letters from nycom, any information not related to loans?

Do we have class on the 22nd? I'm confused by the wording. It does say classes TBA and then right after office of preclinical whatever but are those our regular classes or are those classes to tell us how to be a good medical student? I really wish we didn't have to wait until orientation to find everything out!

I think it just hit me too that I'm going to be a medical student 😀

I called the Office of Pre-Clinical Education but the woman who picked up the phone, though very pleasant, was ALSO not sure if the "classes" that start on Aug 22nd are "real" courses or just intro-to-NYCOM kind of classes.

She is going to find out from Dr. Bryant and call me back....I'll let you know what I find out.

Also, yes, don't worry, those charges for Uniforms are I believe only for 2nd years, as are the charges for Boards, travel, etc. The diagnostic equipment is probably the charge for the stethoscope, etc. that we have to buy during orientation (it says on page 3 of the orientation handbook). I wonder -- does the FA office give us the money from our loan disbursement for equipment and for books? Meaning, is that part of the "reimbursement" check we will get?

Anyone know if we can waive out of the equipment fee? I received a stethescope as a graduation gift.

Does anyone know of any temporary housing available during the first couple weeks of school? I won't be able to move into the house I've rented until after sept. 4th and don't want to commute from jersey everday. Any places that do weekly renting?

reading the Orientation packet it does not seem that we are getting a stethescope from the equipment fee. Also I remember reading in the class of 2009 thread that we will have some kind of fair where we will be able to purchase various items for med school.

hopefully a 2nd year will comment on this.

I don't think you can opt out of any of the fees. I am going to be a third year, and we have the same fees. Some people have told me they are for things like using the patient simulator and the standardized patient lab, but I am not sure if anyone really knows. We had to buy our own equipment, like a stepthoscope, bp cuff, otoscope, etc., but during our first year we were given a tuning fork and a reflex hammer before December break, but I don't know if the first years got them this year.
