Hey all,

My name is Herschel and I will be going to NYCOM in August. I have been accepted for a while but I just came back to this board. I have been working this past year. I live in Brooklyn and will be commuting.

Anyway, nice to meet everyone.

reading the Orientation packet it does not seem that we are getting a stethescope from the equipment fee. Also I remember reading in the class of 2009 thread that we will have some kind of fair where we will be able to purchase various items for med school.

hopefully a 2nd year will comment on this.

When did you get the orientation packet? I havent received anything but a bill from them.

Accd to the Office of Pre-clinical education :

YES, REAL classes start on Aug 22nd, at 10am. The woman didn't specify what exactly, but orientation stuff is essentially all covered on Aug 21 and Aug 22 before 10am.

🙁

(So Mike, you will have a very happy 23rd b'day ....in class!!)

the orientation packet was just posted on the NYCOM 2010 webboard/messageboard -- you can download and print it out -- you should have gotten a letter with the username and password for the board recently....

I don't think you can opt out of any of the fees. I am going to be a third year, and we have the same fees. Some people have told me they are for things like using the patient simulator and the standardized patient lab, but I am not sure if anyone really knows. We had to buy our own equipment, like a stepthoscope, bp cuff, otoscope, etc., but during our first year we were given a tuning fork and a reflex hammer before December break, but I don't know if the first years got them this year.

Ok, ok, I'm probably wrong -- the Diagnostic equipment fee must be for something else.

But still, shouldn't the listed allottment for "books and supplies" be the amount of money we will need to spend on things such as the Bates guide to Physical Exams and the stethoscope and such? Will we get the loan money we've taken out to cover that, in our hands, with the reimbursement check?

i need to stop posting confusing questions here -- apologies!! 😳

I didnt get that letter. I'll call in the morning for the access info.

Thanks!!!

Hey,
Does anyone have a link to an academic calendar for this year, or even last year? If not, do you know what the general school year is like compared to undergrad? I know we start late August obviously, but when does the school year end? And do we generally have the same breaks as undergrad (winter break, spring break, etc) or are they not as long and frequent? Thanks in advance!

That MCAT score should help balance out the low GPA. I'd say you have a good shot at most DO schools.

All the lectures are available for streaming online. I'm wondering why one is required though? Couldn't one stream the lectures from a pc at home if need be?

Same here. I got the letters Hunter mentioned (thanks, btw), but am still waiting for the webboard info.

Looking to switch my cell phone carrier.
Currently, I use Sprint, which is semi spotty in Bklyn. I'm thinking about switching to T-mobile. Anyone have suggestions to what I should get? ie, which has better reception in the Glen Cove, Westbury area?

Thanks!

Your chances are good. If you can get a reference letter from a DO, it will give your application that extra *umph*. (Some of the schools actually require it I think)

NO, you don't need the laptop. Don't listen to the handbook. And if you do get a laptop to stream the lectures, all you need is a wireless card. Don't listen to their minimum specs and required USB drive. I was using a 6 year old laptop. Also, don't listen to their book list either. Read my previous post.

If you have a 2 year contract expiring with sprint and are considering staying with them I'd try to squeeze them for a very nice phone. I wanted a $600 phone they have and managed to get a $600 credit to use for my phone bill. On top of that I sold my old phone, PDA, and mp3 player.

does it have to be a PC? i was planning on getting a newfangled mac with the intel chip (so i can run windows if it's that or death...) but so that i can be mac-based as much as possible...hate those damn pc's.

foresee any problem with that?

it's good to know we don't HAVE to have a new 256MB USB key! I mean, everything and THEN some that i have ever tried to put on my 64MB and 128MB keys for work fits with plenty of room to spare. I think requiring a 256 one is ridiculous unless they are going to GIVE us one for free 🙄

also.....your list of what books to buy and what not to buy was very helpful. However, i wanted to know what you and other 2nd years think about needing Bates Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 9th Edition. In our orientation handbook that was just posted, it says we should get this book before orientation and start familiarizing ourselves with it. But it's like $80.....so do we really need it, and need it now? It says the book (and other equipment like stethoscope, etc) need to be purchased for a "new innovative" part of the curriculum called Doctor-Patient Relationship. Is that something new for us Lecture based first years or is that a course the class of 2009 had as well?

Thanks SOOO much for your help!!

Since everyone is gonna be playing their favorite sports at the next get together in the park, is anyone interested in doing any kickboxing or grappling sparring? It might be fun to roll with some of your future classmates 😀. Let me know if I should bring my gear if anyone is interested!

Me too, me too 🙂. I have spoken to numerous people who say Macs are fine. The only concern the school has is seeing/hearing straming video/audio and using their daily PDA logs in second, third, and fourth years, but I am positive we can do it on a Mac. I am getting one!

Theres one bedroom avaliable in a 3 bedroom apartment with 2 third years. Its great to live with older students for advice and old stuff! The house has all utilities included, is brand new and was renovated last summer. The house has 2 bathrooms . The tenants are 1 male and 1 female. THe place is nice in a nice neighborhood. We have a washer and dryer, plenty of parking, the landlord is great and responsive. The price of the room is $733 and its very LARGE. Theres plenty of room for putting a large desk and a queen size bed. If you have any questions or are interested in the room email me at [email protected]

I stopped by the admissions office on thursday and picked up a copy of the letter. If you aren't close to the school, you can call and have them resend it to you or fax it.

I used to have a mac as part of a program I was part of as an undergrad. I sold it and got a PC after the program was finished, but I guess the only thing I can think of is viewing PDB, Palm Database Files in third and fourth years. But I guess Mac has a PDB viewer of some sort? I haven't remained up to date with the mac software. Anyway, its 2 years from now so no worries 😀
I have to admit though, the ibook I had was so much lighter and easier to carry than the bulky laptop I have now haha

so we do have regular classes the 22nd? thats a bit ridiculous! We wont even have time to meet eachpther and get used to the school...plus it seems there is still orientation stuff that Friday -wats going on?!

i dont think those are regular classes...im pretty sure they are workshops.

Agreed. They are just workshops. It wouldn't be an ORIENTATION packet if it were about our normal classes. It'd be called a "schedule."
Apparently people didn't read my previous post, so i'm gonna paraphrase here. Take a few deep breaths, calm down, and go enjoy your summer. If you've called admissions more than 3 times this past week, that's too much. Relax, seriously. School is going to be stressful, and making urself crazy over these stupid things isn't going to help. So every person go out tonight and have 1 drink for every time you called admissions or financial aid in the past week. Do it, really.

I lost the link to the nycomloans application that was online. Does anyone know what it is? BTW Has anyone recieved their loan amounts yet? Did you guys get both subsidized and unsubsidized loans? Thanks!

Here's the link to NYCOM Loans..
http://apps.nslp.org/easiapp/school/00278202//

I recently filled out my GradPLUS loan application on there and it's still processing. I could be wrong (anyone feel free to correct me if I am), but I think even if you fill it out right now, it doesn't get processed until July 1. I read that somewhere on a different website.

As far as the Stafford Loan stuff goes, I believe the first $8,500 of your loan is subsidized (so you don't pay interest on it while you're in school), and whatever else you got in the Stafford Loan after that, is unsubsidized. So if you do get the full amount from the Stafford Loan, you would be getting $8,500 of a subsidized Stafford Loan and then $32,222 of an unsubsidized one on top of that.

Hope that answers your question. Let me know if it doesn't and I'll try to help.

So I applied to the DPC (PBL) track.

Kinda excited, kinda scared. At first I was anti-DPC but now I'm kinda diggin it. My only worry is that there will be TOO much independence and we might miss some important things 😱 But I suppose time will tell..

Thanks knicks! 😳 I was confused because I just got my loan papers in the mail. And I got both subsidized and unsub. (BTW I'm totally confused by this whole process.... ) Anyways, I thought I would be getting only one kind so I was surprised when I recieved both. Yeaaah.. soo now it makes a little more sense.

I was told we'd find out in mid June. I haven't found out yet.

Any of you golf? It would be great if we could get a group together and play at Bethpage (not the black, but one of the other courses). I was thinking that the week before orientation might be best since many students might not move to the area until then.

Any takers?

No, a MAC is perfectly fine. Install internet explorer or firefox and a ppt viewer and pdf viewer, dvd player, media player and that's all you need. They give you some cd's in NYCOM and they are all mac compadible. I use a PC, but I'm sure a mac is fine.

We also had Doctar-Patient Relationship but I never got the required book "Bates Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking" and I did fine. However, I might get the book before my third year to study for hospital clerkships since my friends say it is good. Anyways, you can get by without buying the book even though it is "required". I never bought it.

does NYCOM give preference to in-state or region students, what are my chances in terms of location being from michigan?

No preference but a large percentage of those applying and going to interviews are from the Northeast.

wanted to bump this.

We actually will use Harrison's in class? I figured that was going to be one of the unnecessary books.

What is the ISBN for the dictionary you recommend?

One of you guys wanted to know the schedule for last year. Here is my approximate schedule for this year.

Somtime at late August was orientation for about a week.
The the fundamentals Thread was from August 29 - End of September.
Really easy thread, where they baby you and give you lots of breaks. Don't think Medical School is this easy. The next thread will be MUCH harder.
Immunology thread was from October 11- about November 22/23?
Not as easy as the first one. Now you get to taste what medical school is like.
Intergumentory system thread was from November 28- Dec 21.
Neuro 1, Neuro 2, and Neuro 3 ran from January 3rd to April 12. Neuro 3 is when we started to do anatomy dissections. Now medical school gets much harder since you have to know the dissections for the practical.
The rest of the year until May 31 is Musculoskeletal System.
I have no clue if your schedule will look anywhere near like it was this year, so don't take this seriously.

Advice. DON'T BUY ANY OF THE BOOKS THEY TELL YOU TO GET until you start the course for at least 2 weeks since you will over buy and not use 3/4 of the books you get. I have 7 extra books lying around that I will never use bec. I listened to the school and bought the required texts. You only need these books:

-Grant's Dissector,
-Grant's Clinically Oriented Anatomy,
-some anatomy atlas (Grants, Netters whatever),
-Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine (THIS is a must have since I think it is the most comprehensive and well written medical text in the world and helped me out a lot).

The following books I used for myself (not required by NYCOM) but I think are really cool:
-First Aid for the USMLE step 1 (will help you a lot studying for exams GET IT),
-Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple (more useful for the boards but does help you out when you are confused),
-Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple (saved my ass in Neuro). -Get "Mosbey's Dictionary of medicine, nursing and health professionals" since it is really good (look up all those medical terms/ diseases you never heard of).
-Maybee get the biochem book they require since maybee I used it like 2 times.

This is all you really need for NYCOM in my opinion, since these are the only books I ever use. Buy other books on a need to use basis. If you see that you need them, buy them.

I disagree with most of those book recommendations. Here are mine.

- Harrisons is available free online and has a search engine with updates. So is Robbins pathology, on mdconsult. Learn to study with a computer folks, the time of having 10 textbooks wide open on your desk is a bygone era.
- robbins review of path
- Pretest series: bad questions, good explanations.
- Micro is the only book worth getting in the "made ridiculously simple" series.
- Moore's is the textbook you want for clinical anatomy
- Rohen's atlas for practicals. There's like 50 old netter and clemente atlases in the library. Also many good websites exist.
- BRS phys, path, gross anatomy, and cell biology. The rest in the series are weaker and/or outdated.
- first aid, duh.
- lippincott biochem ... eh, I've used it once or twice. There are plenty biochem and molecular bio books free at pubmed.com, and what little clinical crossover there is, Robbins covers it adequately
- lippincott pharm ... the best of the worst. goodman&gilman is the champ of pharm. pretest pharm is great.
- savarese and the book written by the 2 nycom fellow grads for OMM (nothing else exists, so might as well have both).
- OMM textbook is one of the worst textbooks ever made, but you should get it because you will definitely need to stuff up there.
- for motivated students, a qbank... figure this out on your own, but its a good impetus for "correct" studying.

I played the yellow (the easiest at Bethpage) last week, and it cost me about $47 ($16 for the cart, 31 for the green fee??? something like that). You dont have to be that good...its a public course so they get everything from really good to really bad. I shot a 102 and my friend shot a 114. I would say that most people who play there shoot in the mid 90's.

Do you play often Hunter?

Actually, i disagree, simply because I CALLED the Office of Pre-clinical education and the lady i spoke to ASKED Dr. Bryant and called me back. So supposedly it's straight from the horse's mouth that we have REAL courses, and not just orientation-related workshops.

Don't get me wrong, I was as surprised as you all were. Which is why I called that office -- see my post on the previous page, this is really what they told me. In fact, they were the only ones were able to give me a definitive answer.

Just sayin'! Don't freak out, but just be prepared, we might have to listen and learn starting the 2nd day we get there.......

Hey,

I'd be in to play some golf...I usually shoot low 90's, but hopefully by the time NYCOM starts that number decreases! Also, Is there anyone who would be interested in sharting a 3br apartment where the rent would be something like 600 to 700 a person? There's two of us already, just looking for a 3rd.

Cheers.

Can anyone tell me what the max amount we can take out in Grad PLUS loans?
