Sorry for not disclosing all the information. Just wanted to remain anonymous.
What made you apply to so many programs (42)? Just wondering because your stats and extracurriculars are good. Good job

Just me panicking about the whole process.
Also figured the opportunity cost i would be paying if i didn't match this year was way higher than the $ i spent on the application

[Edited]:

In the spirit of helping the upcoming OMFS candidates, I thought I will look at my path to OMFS in retrospect, and hopefully some of you will find yourself in similar shoes and benefit from it.

This is my first time applying to civilian programs because I was bound by my military obligation. I applied to a whole bunch of programs coz im Canadian and I have been out of school for 6 yrs. Little did I know there r probably only 25 programs that actually take Canadians. I mean I didn't do my due diligence by calling them one by one, but that's that. I guess it shows that it really only takes one interview to get you in. Obviously the more interviews the merrier, but make every single one count is what will differentiate you from the rest.

That said, I think what got me the mere 3 interviews were honestly my CBSE mark and my military experiences as it seemed that the Canadian Armed Forces have had some dealings with these programs/schools at some points... Or that these programs have some sort of military ties... so all my brothers-in-arm take notes. PM me if you want further details.

My contingency plan was to get an one year internship if it doesn't pan out this year, because I know the majority of programs don't know or won't recognize the military achievements that I have brought forth, but they will understand/appreciate if one has gone through an OMFS internship. So if your case dictates you to increase your chance of match by having more interview invites, internship definitely is one way to go. (dude I met during the trail went from 2 interviews - didn't match to 10 interviews this year while on an yr of internship; I hope he matched this time around).

Because of my military obligation, I was not able to apply to OMFS until 5 years in, but the biggest lesson I got was so long as you prepared yourself really well, you will make it. But if that doesn't get you the first shot, make your application more attractive and try again!

So good luck to all who are going to either apply or re-apply next year, you guys are all warriors, and you know it. And for those who matched, enjoy your program as I am sure the program you match is the best one for ya!

I decided to pursue OMS late. Class rank held me back. It took three years of not matching, lots of post-graduate work, and a significant improvement in my NBME score to be taken seriously and match to a top program. I'm sure this post will somehow be used for someone to steal my identity, but it's still less than what Equifax handed out.

Anyhow, congratulations to all those who matched. Good luck to those who did not and choose to continue pursuing OMS. If you keep working hard, it might just pay off.

Anyone know another site where these get posted? It’s so hard finding stats on admitted residents, and this thread is dead and useless.

On behalf of everyone here, I would like to apologize for the uselessness of this thread. It is abysmal and shameful that people not share their personal information with you.
You deserve better, so here it is:

This is what you need to get into an OMS residency (I have applied multiple times, so I am an expert):
1) CBSE: 60+ at a minimum, 65+ if you are otherwise baller, 70+ if you like nice things. I think the average at the Parkland interview was 75.
2) Class Rank: Top 50% at a minimum, 25% if you are otherwise baller, 10% if you like nice things
3) Letters of Recommendation: Good ones, mainly from OMS. One from the chair. They probably won't even read a letter written by your prosth faculty, even if you've slipped a crisp Benjamin in there.
4) Externships: Do enough. I was told 4 weeks minimum at different programs.
5) Research: Nice to have, not a need to have. This alone won't get you interviews.
6) Extracurriculars: Learn to play the flute. All of the best OMS programs prefer someone good at blowing things. Also, you have to be jacked. OMS is the orthopedic surgery of dentistry, and it's important that you look the part.
7) Internships: If you do one, make sure it's somewhere you will get good letters and experience or somewhere they usually keep their interns if you're feeling lucky.
8) Graduation Date: It is harder to get interviews the further out from school you are. This is a real thing.
9) Nationality: Be an American. It is harder if you're not, even if you're Canadian (which is pretty much a friendlier, less racist American)
10) Interviewing: Don't be a weirdo, a butt-hole, or a try-hard. If you are any of those things, hide it.

Good luck.

This sums it up well. It’s hard to post our stats because then we are no longer anonymous.

I disagree with this part. If you are a weirdo, a butt-hole or a try-hard, don't hide this during your interview, unless you are confident you can hide it for the remainder of your residency. You are just tricking others to let you in, and once you are in, you probably won't get along with others because you are not who they thought you were.

People do it anyway and no one cares. Post your details. Program directors etc have more important things to be doing than trolling forums, especially once residents have matched.

So many people on this forum want free info but then won't pay it forward.

I was kidding. About 3 parts serious, 7 parts sarcasm. Those people can't hide those things.

I would tend to agree. I have been on SDN for a few years, but I have hardly ever posted. That said, the information others have shared on here did help give me a reference point to target, which is why I decided to share my experience as well.

What exactly would being top 10 include (GPA) again? If I want to try and create a sort of benchmark for myself, what exactly would you suggest?

Also, are there any international students that matched this year?
