Anyone know another site where these get posted? It’s so hard finding stats on admitted residents, and this thread is dead and useless.
On behalf of everyone here, I would like to apologize for the uselessness of this thread. It is abysmal and shameful that people not share their personal information with you.
You deserve better, so here it is:
This is what you need to get into an OMS residency (I have applied multiple times, so I am an expert):
1)
CBSE: 60+ at a minimum, 65+ if you are otherwise baller, 70+ if you like nice things. I think the average at the Parkland interview was 75.
2)
Class Rank: Top 50% at a minimum, 25% if you are otherwise baller, 10% if you like nice things
3)
Letters of Recommendation: Good ones, mainly from OMS. One from the chair. They probably won't even read a letter written by your prosth faculty, even if you've slipped a crisp Benjamin in there.
4)
Externships: Do enough. I was told 4 weeks minimum at different programs.
5)
Research: Nice to have, not a need to have. This alone won't get you interviews.
6)
Extracurriculars: Learn to play the flute. All of the best OMS programs prefer someone good at blowing things. Also, you have to be jacked. OMS is the orthopedic surgery of dentistry, and it's important that you look the part.
7)
Internships: If you do one, make sure it's somewhere you will get good letters and experience or somewhere they usually keep their interns if you're feeling lucky.
8)
Graduation Date: It is harder to get interviews the further out from school you are. This is a real thing.
9)
Nationality: Be an American. It is harder if you're not, even if you're Canadian (which is pretty much a friendlier, less racist American)
10)
Interviewing: Don't be a weirdo, a butt-hole, or a try-hard. If you are any of those things, hide it.
Good luck.
