Hi everyone. Congratulations on getting accepted to an SHPEP site for this summer!! This will be a great opportunity to meet new people, strengthen your networking skills and of course learn about your respective medical profession that you applied for. I hope the next six weeks in the summer will be an enjoyable and a new learning experience for you.

Applicants who are still waitlisted, please hang in there and check your status on a daily basis for any updates. I understand this can be anxious but hopefully good news will turn up for you. For those who were not admitted, please know that there are many other opportunities out there besides this program that you would qualify for. Stay passionate, motivated and work hard everyday until you achieve your dream.

I recently participated in SHPEP last summer with Rutgers University. Anyone who is attending there this upcoming summer, please feel to reach out to me if you have any questions! I would be happy to assist you and offer advise.

Hi, I’m accepted to Rutgers, Pharmacy this summer. I wonder how programs will offer clinical experiences/opportunities for Pharmacy students. Also, what did you guys do for the weekend? because I’m living nearby the campus, should I come home for the weekend? And what should I prepare to take full advantage of the program?
Thank you so much!

Congratulations!! I also participated in the Pharmacy program last summer with Rutgers and I am starting Pharmacy School this Fall. Since Pharmacy is relatively new to SHPEP there wasn't much clinical experience for us last summer. We had an opportunity to travel to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick with our preceptor and fourth year pharmacy students from Rutgers and shadow pharmacists in various settings including Retail, Research, Emergency Medicine, Clinical and Pediatrics. It was an amazing experience and taught us that there is more to pharmacy than just retail. Other than that, we were mostly educated on the profession of pharmacy rather than getting clinical experience in the field. Hopefully this year they offer more clinical exposure to the pharmacy scholars. The program definitely offers you clinical exposure in Nursing, Dentistry, Medicine and not just Pharmacy. Aside from Pharmacy, SHPEP gave me a lot more clinical exposure in Medicine and Dentistry. So you will have a good bit of clinical exposure in the other areas.

As for weekends, you are free to do what you want since there are no activities or classes scheduled. I also lived not too far from the Newark campus and would go home every weekend and come back Sunday nights or sometimes early Monday morning.

When I participated in the program, the main factor that I took full advantage of was networking with other scholars and most importantly the faculty and healthcare professionals because they can be a big help when applying to professional healthcare programs in the future, point you in the right direction finding a job opportunity and also give you the chance to shadow them in their respective setting if they allow it. During the program, I had the opportunity to network with an Otolaryngology Surgeon and was allowed to shadow her for a month after the program ended. As a Pharmacy major, I am interested working in a clinical setting where I can counsel and educate patients on their medications. Shadowing the Otolaryngology physician allowed me to observe patients under her supervision and watch how a healthcare professional interacts with patients in a clinical setting as well as learn interesting cases.

I hope this helps and answers your questions. Please let know if you would like to know anything else about the program.

COVID-19 UPDATE: SHPEP is currently in normal operating status; therefore, all scheduled programming will proceed as planned. The National Program Office is continuously assessing the potential impact COVID-19 could have on the implementation of SHPEP in the coming months. We are in close contact with SHPEP staff at each of our 12 program sites and regularly receive updates on any decisions made that could alter normal campus operations when summer programming takes place.

According to the AAMC, SHPEP is currently under evaluation. I know the uncertainty is uncomfortable. Stay resilient and remember that the deciding factors in moving forward with SHPEP programming will be student health and safety.

Shpep might be online and I don’t really like that because I won’t be getting the full experience. It’s not far maybe we can apply again next year

I agree. I don’t really want to do it online because that’s not what we applied for. I wish they would give up automatic admittance for next summer.

Where did you find out that it may be online this year? Was this said by SHPEP staff?

It was sent to your email
Oh okay, I didn't get an email about that. Was it sent recently? The last email I received from them was on the 12th of March about decisions and how they are assessing the COVID-19 situation.

All of this very unprecedented. Yes, an online SHPEP wouldn’t be the best, but those are the circumstances y’all may have right now. If you qualify next year, yeah do it!

UF sent out an email this morning that "the University of Florida Summer Health Professions Education Program (UF SHPEP) will not be able to take place on-campus in Gainesville this summer" and "it has been decided that we will instead offer a fully online program. This contingency is pending the approval of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation which provides the funding for all SHPEP program sites." I'm not sure if other sites have sent out updates, as well 🙁

Update from the SHPEP Website:

"COVID-19 UPDATE: In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the SHPEP National Program Office (NPO) has decided to forgo on-site programming and is currently exploring other options. The NPO is in close contact with SHPEP staff at each of our 12 program sites and regularly receives updates about the impact of COVID-19 on their respective campus operations. If you have questions about your participation in SHPEP this summer, please email [email protected] or call (866) 587- 6337 (toll-free)."

I'm really disappointed 🙁

I am very sorry for all of you who arranged for such productive and exciting summers but are being met with this challenge. If you are in need of someone to run your thoughts by, don’t hesitate to message or email me.

Is thy ere a way y’all can push Shpep back to July? Instead of online

I encourage you to reach out to your site managers and voice your concern. Unfortunately, I am not involved with this decision.

Hope you guys have been doing well and staying safe. I know this is not what we expected, but we will be stronger after all of this. Quick question, does that mean SHPEP this year will be transferred online? If so, would they be able to accommodate those on waitlists that are already full?

that would be awesome!

From what I’ve gathered from some accepted scholars is that their sites are preparing to make workshops/lectures available online to them. I’m not sure if it’ll be extended to waitlist/rejected applicants, just because that would be an overload of students to attend to and SHPEP funding covers the ~80 scholars per site. Not saying it won’t happen but just wait for more info.

I have a question will they mail us the materials like the lab coat etc in the mail. So we can get those full benefits as well

Hi! I'm still on the wait list. I've been checking everyday, and I was just wondering how long the wait list period lasts.

Hey everyone! I am in the Louisville Dental Program and I was wondering if anyone has not heard from their site in a while... The last email I got was the beginning of April and they said that they would be sending out a survey very soon but I have yet to receive that and I am not sure if I should be concerned that I am not receiving emails.

I got accepted to Colombia and I haven't heard anything from them either. So I think we're all in the same boat!

Received info on Friday, will probably look pretty similar at other sites:

“I wanted to update you on what the National Program Office has decided regarding this year’s SHPEP program as well as inform you on Rutgers plans to move forward. Rutgers 2020 SHPEP program will run for four (4) weeks this summer and all courses and activities will be virtual – there will be no on campus activities. That said, Rutgers SHPEP program will start on Monday, July 6thand end on Friday, July 31st. We are excited about the opportunity to have you as a SHPEP Scholar.

We are currently in the process of working through the programmatic changes to deliver a remote curriculum, and more importantly, to engage you as our Scholars.

As a reminder, please do not make any travel arrangements. Regarding stipends, the NPO is currently working on this and we will know more as they begin to finalize the changes to this year’s program. We will continue to keep you updated as things develop.”

Our stipends might as well be more for having to go through all this. They don't even have to pay for travel this year lol

If anyone knows of a shpep gc can someone add me too it. I’m attending the Louisville Pharmacy site

Is anyone choosing not to participate this summer? Are we eligible to apply next year if we don’t participate or if we do participate can we still apply since it’s not the same experience?

Once you participate, you will no longer be eligible for any subsequent year. Otherwise, you can reapply again next year, granted that you still meet the eligibility requirements.

Has anyone heard back from any of their sites recently? Got an update from the Rutgers site about 3 weeks ago and am curious to know if any other sites have finalized any plans/ schedule outlines.

APPLICATION OPENS: November 1st, 2019!

Hello Future SHPEP Applicant,

My name is Austin Rios. I participated in the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston program site in 2018. This year, I have been selected to serve as an SHPEP Ambassador. My goal as an ambassador is to help you, as an applicant, learn as much as you can about the program, serve as a guide throughout your application and even give some advice that may lead to a successful application.

Please feel free to read or watch my story!

Please use this thread to talk among applicants and ask for help when needed. Former SHPEP alumnus are welcome as well!

If you find my advice helpful, please let SHPEP/AAMC know! Each SHPEP applicant I recruit should list my full name (Austin Rios) for the referral question (How did you learn about the program?) located in the Personal Information section of the application. 🙂

Lastly, I may not always be online to answer your questions. Please never hesitate to reach out to me directly at [email protected].

Best of luck!

Hi

Is this for under-represented minority students only, or is it open to other students ?

I got accepted and confirmed at Colombia University - Dental
Waitlisted from UCLA
Denied from UW
Very happy with the results. Hopefully everyone got into their top choices! 🙂
I know I'm hella late but I'm thinking about applying to Columbia for dental. I was wondering if you would be willing to share any of your stats/ECs. I'm a sophmore so this is the last time I can apply, and since we can only apply to 3 schools, I don't wanna waste a shot by applying to Columbia if I don't qualify. I'm nervous cause I didn't get accepted to Columbia or Rutgers last year (I had a 3.84 GPA and a few EC's) //:

[For reference: My GPA is now 3.94. I think I have a decent list of EC (research+published paper, 2 volunteer positions, work as a public health ambassador on campus, pre-dental student representative on the pre-health advisory board at my school, president of a community service club, residential life hall council member, sterile tech at a dental practice, and have my own small business to sell handmade edible decorations). ]
