My school has submitted my official transcript online about a week ago and has sent me text updates that it was put in the mail, but my application still says my transcript was not received. I emailed them yesterday, but I am not sure how long it will take them to respond. Is there anything else I can do?

Hi!

It looks like you’ve done eveything you need to, to make sure that your application is complete. The NPO office is likely working on processing it and those of many others. It may take a few days for your portal to update. As long as transcripts are postmarked by 02/05, your transcript will still be accepted. You’ll be fine.

The professor that wrote my recommendation letter sent it over email today. Do you know how long it will take for my status to be changed on the SHPEP website? I know they are probably super backed up since the application is due today, but I thought I would ask.

Hi,

I’m not 100% sure. Maybe a few days or a week? You’ve done everything you can regardless. Now it’s just a waiting game.

Application has (essentially) closed:

Future SHPEPers, we have reached the end of the application cycle for 2020 SHPEP. Congratulations on completing your application! I’m so happy that I was able to reach so many of you and offer my help in this process. Thank you for being open to my advice and I hope it has been of some help to you.

Now, we wait!

I wanted to post an unofficial FAQ that were some of the looming questions I had or heard of when I was applying. Just know that things may have changed and that the process may be a little different over the years.
  1. Something from my application still hasn’t shown up on my portal. Did you get it? NPO is probably processing whatever document you sent in, especially if it was sent in near the deadline. You can call them the NPO for more details.
  2. It’s March 15th. The site is broken. Whaaaa? It’s okay. You can try calling the NPO and to let them know. They will likely already be working with AAMC to fix the issue. You will be notified of your status/results with due time.
  3. It’s March 15th. When will my results be released? I am not entirely sure when NPO plans to release them. My year, it was at around 3:00pm CST. Keep an eye out from NPO for details about this. Results are usually released in waves to prevent the portal from crashing like it did my year.
  4. I was accepted to a/multiple site(s). How long do I have to accept my spot? 2 days. All decisions are final and not subject to appeal or change afterward. Make sure you can commit to the timeframe of the site so that a spot doesn’t end up empty if you cannot attend. You can only attend one site if accepted to multiple.
  5. I’m on the waitlist. When can I expect to know if I get off it? March 18th is when SHPEP begins to draw from the waitlist. You will have 24hrs to accept your position. You usually get some sort of notification if there’s a change to your status. Check on your portal frequently regardless. I had a friend almost miss accepting his application because he was traveling during the time. Mark your calendars!!
  6. I wasn’t accepted. Why? SHPEP is a competitive program and with such limited space, we cannot accept everything single qualifying student. NPO doesn’t usually provide feedback on an applicant’s application. Apply again next year if you’re still eligible! Stay strong and be resilient!
  7. I’ve been accepted! Now what? CONGRATS!! Wait to hear from your site. It may take about a week or two so that participants are confirmed and the site managers can begin to send out on-boarding information.
  8. “Site is full.” What does this mean? The site cohort has been filled. My year, some people managed to get on the waitlist even after this status was posted. Don’t expect a miracle but it has happened.
  9. I was accepted to a site and I’m also on the waitlist for another site I’m interested in. What should I do?!? This is a tough one. You run the risk of losing your acceptances if you wait to see if you get off the waitlist. You can try calling the site and see if they have any information for you but I’m not sure how open they will be to that. Use your best judgment!
Although the application cycle has ended, I am still more than happy to answer your questions here or via email ([email protected]). I don’t plan to be as active on here near March 15th since I’ll be a few days away from taking my MCAT by then but please send me an email update on your results, good or bad! One of the reasons why I wanted to become an Ambassador this year was to help others have the same rewarding experience I did. It would make me very happy to hear from those I’ve been able to help from SDN or from our previous contact.

Very good luck!! - Austin Rios, SHPEP Ambassador. :wacky:

Hello everyone!

With the coronavirus outbreak gradually becoming a more pressing issue in the United States, does anyone have any idea how this might impact the availability of various program sites this summer? Stay safe!

We got an email today and it seems like everything is still on as of now! Best of luck!

By no means am I an expert in immunology or infectious diseases, but everyone should do their best to be “business as usual” with extra precautions in hygiene. Most of what you are being recommended to do are things you should already be doing. Just be mindful and be alert.

I am in the same boat hoping that my own summer program doesn’t get cancelled. Fingers crossed.

I asked a friend and he said they might be out at midnight but I'm not sure

SHPEP is probably going to be cancelled. I go to undergrad at one of the SHPEP sites, and the hospital is completely closed off to non essential visitors. The dorms have also been closed for a few weeks. This pandemic is only going to get worse in the coming weeks/months. This is unfortunate for sophomores who can’t apply next year.

In the words of President Donald Trump “SAD!!!!”.

@merchsabr I applied to University of Iowa, University of Nebraska, and University of California - Los Angles. All for medicine. Definitely not going to UCLA (my top choice) due to the statewide emergency declared in California.

If they're ever going to cancel it, when do you think they would do it? I for example have international flights to book and I'm kinda stuck right now because it really depends on IF I am accepted at any SHPEP site, and whether it's gonna happen this summer or not.

I don’t mean to be discouraging, because I really hope we all get to attend our sites this year! But as an undergrad student at Howard who just had to evacuate, I don’t think that site is going to be very promising for those who applied. Housing is going to be tricky considering that most of our (current students @ Howard) belongings will be there until May or June, and we aren’t even allowed to be back on campus until further notice. Just a heads up.

Not accepted at UCLA and UW, Waitlist Rutgers

QQ and i go to Rutgers too 🙁

Edit: Rutgers and UCLA for Nursing, UW for Public Health

Accepted at Louisville and confirmed! Rejected by Washington and Nebraska. Any speculation on if the programs will run? I'm a rising junior so this would be my last opportunity.

Accepted at UCLA. Got rejected from Nebraska. WesternU has delayed decisions but I don't care about it now because I got into my top choice.

Huge congratulations to each of you!!

For now, I recommend that you think about your options for the summer before you accept or decline. I know COVID has brought concerns to you but right now, speculating whether the program will run will not help you much in the long run. This is undoubtedly a very hard decision but just know that the program will run if there isn’t a risk to your health.

Some of you have asked about waitlists. Unfortunately there’s no magical answer or tip that will get you off of it. It all depends on where you stand on that list and how many people accept their offers. You can try to email/call the coordinator at that site to remind them of your interest, but I’m not sure how helpful that could be. Anyone who said they got in because they “called to tell them they wanted to join,” could be by coincidence.

got into Iowa and Nebraska for dental! waitlisted at Columbia. Hopefully, COVID doesn't interfere with the program in any way....

Hey, I've been stalking this forum lowkey but this is what happened lol.
Rutgers-Not Accepted
Nebraska-Accepted
Columbia-Accepted AND confirmed
Anyone else get accepted to Columbia?

Accepted at UAB for optometry and waitlisted at Western. My first choice was Western and I really wanna go there. What should I do?
You only have 2 business days to accept UAB's offer and schools don't start pulling off the waitlist until Wednesday, so if you wanna run the risk of losing the UAB acceptance, id say go for it! I had the same thought, I really wanted Howard but I wasn't willing to risk losing my acceptance to UAB to wait for Howard when its possible that they might not even take me off the waitlist lol

I got accepted to both UAB and Western. Rejected by UCLA. Going to Western for optometry.

They waitlisted mine as well for Western, but got an acceptance email from them 2 hours later. I would wait for a day or two if you want to go there badly.

I got accepted and confirmed at Colombia University - Dental
Waitlisted from UCLA
Denied from UW
Very happy with the results. Hopefully everyone got into their top choices! 🙂
