Official UCSD Countdown Thread, former "I'm in, UCSD,.."

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
you guys are so awesome! thanks! i feel bad having this spot when you all deserve it so much more. i'm pretty sure i'm withdrawing, so best wishes to you all.

the email was from dr. resnik, and i actually wasn't on the waitlist. this was the first i've heard since my interview a few weeks ago. that could be a good sign though, maybe they're just behind and haven't gotten to the waitlist yet.

i hope this spot goes to one of you!! 🙂 🙂

are they giving you a timeframe in which to make your decision?

I wonder why some SDNers here who were placed in the "Acceptable Pool" were able to find out their position. Others who contacted the Office of Admissions, especially today, were not able to do so. I guess this proves to be another way in which the process is random.

Also, does anyone know what day next week the letters regarding waitlist (or rejection) information will be mailed? Thanks so much for the information.

It will keep a few people out of their hair while the alternate list is finalized. No one has heard that they were at the "top" of the pool have they? As far as I know, you only know if you are in the pool or drowning.

the lady i talked to this morning sounded so pooped out.

she was actually kinda shocked when i asked right away for my position in the apool 🙂

I guess i'll just wait.. it'll be 1 or 2 more weeks right? we'll be getting letters soon.

I remember weeks before when I called, they would ask for my amcas id. and then tell me that i'm still in the apool. The didn't tell me where I stood. I suppose back then they didn't have an idea of that. I think it'll depend who u get when you call.

Hero and Jefe, I wish you the best of luck at all of the medical schools you are still waiting for, especially if either of you have not been accepted yet. I have read a lot of your posts and I really sympathize with both of you. You two keep your heads up because things will work out! You never know, all three of us may be classmates. Keep hope alive and read Watcha's post that appears earlier in this thread if it even begins to wain. Good luck!

they sound like they're being slow. i'll probably send the withdrawal before i get the letter. i agree, the person who answered the phone sounded so tired!

luck everyone. 🙂

Has UCSD finished all of their interviews yet?

Yes, according to Dr. Resnik they wrapped up all their interviews in mid April this year.

I didn't get interviewed by Dr. Resnik, but some other interviewees were. Does he have more decision power in the committee? Also, did they deliberately match interviewers and interviewees?

It's probably too late and useless for me to ask this question, but I am just very curious.

I interviewed with Dr. Resnick, so I'm sure they must have matched him up with only the best applicants... 😀

Using that logic, I'm guessing that since I was interviewed in April, they were also saving the best applicants for last when they scheduled the interview dates.

If I remember correctly, Dr. Resnick interviewed 3 different people the day I was at UCSD. I got the impression that he was pretty intimately involved with the admissions process. On the other hand, I don't feel that there was any benefit gained from having him as one of my interviewers.

If he did in fact like me, I hope that he has all the power in making the decision on my file. 🙂

I withdrew my spot, so there's one more open. Good luck to everyone.

hell yeah, ginseng, thanks a lot!
i hope i can take your spot as the official UCSD nutritional supplement 🙂

To everyone swimming in the acceptable pool, have any of you heard whether or not you have been put on the wait-list?

would we find out this week or the next?

By the 3rd week of June you should receieve a letter telling you if you're on waitlist or not. It will arrive via regular snail mail. The reason for the delay is that the UCSD office will be closed for 1 week for renovation...

thanks Sammyeam! how'd you get this info? Wish this waitlist would move as fast as UCI's...

3rd week... pple's lives on hold doens't matter i guess.

Hero, it seems that you are currently on quite a # waitlists, I'm just curious which school is your absolute first choice??

"By the 3rd week of June you should receieve a letter telling you if you're on waitlist or not."

So I was right.... Someone in the Admissions told me i'll get the mail by mid-June. Oh, wait, actually I was WAY OFF; the 3rd week of June is after mid-June!

~~~~Happy happy joy joy (doing a tap dance on my own head).
Sammmeyeam, my man, if you got that info from a friend in the Admissions Office, could you please kindly tell him/her that a few new pieces of furniture can wait until the letters are sent?
I mean, if furnitures could talk, I believe the couch would say "yeah, sure, I can wait out on the hallway until people's lifelong dreams are taken care of first."
And I believe that new candy machine with Skittles and M&Ms would also voice her opinion, "You are right, Mr. Couch, those poor bastards on the waitlist applied last summer, and I believe 5/15 would be long gone by the 3rd week of June."
...Anyway, I am going to get totally drunk now. Wake me up 6/21, cool?
What's up guys,
The information about letters being sent by the third week of June (by the latest) is directly from Mrs. Whitson, the director of Admissions...
You guys were correct about the waitlist: it will consist of mainly the top half of the acceptable pool... they will try their best to tell you your chance of acceptance. I have no idea how many people are on the waitlist... does anyone know?
You will receive a letter if you are on the waitlist, or even if you get rejected... it will come by snail mail, no more emails... so don't waste your time.
It appears that additional information does not really matter (e.g. letter of intent, etc).. you're basically ranked and your fate is determined. It just depends on how many people withdraw. All we can do now is just wait.
They have accepted 220 students, and expect to accept about 275 in total.
Between now and mid-June, it doesn't look like they will give you any info about your position on the acceptable pool/waitlist... you have to wait until you get the letter.
Goodluck to everyone... and please post any updates. Thanks
Hey all! I just wanted to say good luck to every1 still waiting on the waitlist. Keep your heads up. I'm rooting for you all. 😀
1, 2, and 3 are all balanced out by their pros and cons and I'd love to go to any of them. They are sorted by their tuition. Since my bro is in pharm school at USC, tuition is very important to me.
1 UCSD (Hold, hoping for waitlist)
2 OHSU (Hold, hoping for waitlist)
3 USC (waitlist)
4 SLU (waitlist)
Well... on the bright side, at least we don't have to worry about constantly sending updates and all that! :wink:
hmm...i was going to post this on the medschool orientation/start date thread, but i couldn't find it. i just called the admissions office and they said that orientation this year will start on 9/3 and instruction will begin 9/9. yeah, more vaction time for us!
Hey UCSDers--
Good luck to everyone in the A-Pool. I'm just letting you know that I'm withdrawing my spot. I hope whoever gets it enjoys!!
Holy crap 9/3 and 9/9!???? Wow. That's like almost a full month after UCLA starts. Sweet jesus, that's awesome.
I'm going to have 3.5 months of summer hehehehee
I got Dr Resnik's email today and now I am deciding b/w UCI and UCSD (and I only have til the end of the week) :clap: ...any input? I also had a couple of questions, if you guys have a second. Does UCSD have honors/pass/fail or just p/f
How are the class hours, is it 8-4 every day or are there shorter days?
and finally...how do you guys feel about the infamous rumors about stressed out UCSD students...help...
I will help u with the info I know
UCI is honors/pass/fail
but UCSD is pass/fail only...
best of luck...u have two great choices..
ok here is the link for the match lists, click on the schools u are interested....are u interested in a top residency position or simply becoming primary care? :clap: very happy for u
Match Listings
actually ucsd is p/f the first quarter only and is h/p/f thereafeter
anteater,
when did you interview? was this after being placed in the acceptable pool? thanx
stephanie ur a fellow bruin 🙂
which schools are u waiting from? best of luck with ur choices :wink:
Anteater, I'm curious to whether you were accepted off the acceptable pool as well. Some other post said that from now one "resnik emails" would no longer be sent.
Hey everybody,
To answer your questions...I was in the A-pool since the end of Feb and I interviewed in the end of Jan...does anyone have the link to UCSD's weekly class schedule, I was still wondering if it's 8-4 or do they have shorter days. Thanks
•••quote:•••They have accepted 220 students, and expect to accept about 275 in total. ••••since anteater was recently accepted, does that mean that the accepted have withdrawn below the class size?
hey anteater,
I'm choosing between uci and ucds, too. check out the comparision in the allopathic forum. what are your current thoughts? good luck deciding!
I am very happy to see movement occuring from the "Acceptable Pool." Hawkeyes, Darwin, Anteater, and others have been fortunate enough to receive the e-mail from Dr. Resnik. Congratulations!
Although I have been quite depressed about my predicament regarding UCSD and UCI the last few weeks, I feel optimistic now about my chances. I have a "feeling"/premonition an e-mail or phone call will be coming to me from either of these schools over the next couple of weeks.
Good luck to all who are still waiting. Movement is OCCURING! By the way, Hero, do not worry if the number of acceptances is above or below the class size, since movement is occuring. We will all never truly understand this process.
california -
i sent you a pm
yea.. it's just weird when i called (just yesterday) to see my status (like where I am in the apool) but they said that decisions/ranking of waitlist won't be mdade till next week.
Hi there,
I'm fairly new to the forums, but I just wanted to share my story. I interviewed for UCSD on Dec 20, and was promptly put in the a-pool. I haven't heard anything for ages so this past weekend I sent a letter of intent and an update to both Dr. Resnik and Linda Whitson. I didn't receive an email, but this past Wednesday, I received a call from Linda Whitson. She delivered the news that I was accepted. She told me was that an email was sent to me to call Dr. Resnik a week and a half ago and I never responded. She wanted to make sure that I truly wasn't interested. I NEVER received that email (my email happens to include my middle initial that is often overlooked)! She remembered my name from the letter I sent and called me back-- of course I accepted the offer. I've never felt so fortunate. I almost lost my chance to get into my dream school.
I asked about how the admissions process was going and she said the class was filled and the waitlist will be formed next week. She also mentioned the bit about the admissions office being closed in mid june... nothing new.
Please, please, please, those of you who are waiting, don't give up. Hero, Cali, etc etc... i really wish you the best of luck! If you can, update anything (no matter how small) including your strong desire about going to UCSD. If it's the school you want, do everything you can to let them know-- if I didn't send that timely interest letter, my med school predicament could have been drastically different. Check up on your status, because who knows what could happen.
I wish all you waiting UCSDers lots of luck-- i've lurked around for awhile, and I really sympathize your status. I was waitlisted to 5 schools this year (waitlisted at 5 schools the year before) and was quickly losing hope. This changed it for me. Keep the faith...
And to those that are definitely going to UCSD, I look forward to meeting you soon. 🙂 To those going to the summer program, I look forward to seeing you sooner. 🙂
rexlax, thanks for your support and congrats on your acceptance! i need to find something to do like pick up garbage so i can tell UCSD about it 😛
i don't think it will be long before we start hearing something from them.
Hi RexLax,
Congratulations to you!!!! :clap: :clap: :clap:
I look forward meeting you in the Fall!
For those still swimming in the pond: good luck, I will keep my fingers crossed for you!
Chnobli
😀
hey all, just wanted to thank you all for the support. As Cali mentioned, I did get off the acceptable pool today! 😀 I'm super thrilled, and am also deciding btwn UCI and UCSD. I originally thought that it would be a no-brainer, but started to hear the rumours about the SD students and saw how happy UCI students were. Any feedback will be appreciated. I, too, will look at the comparisons on the allopathic thread. Good luck to everyone! I hope to meet you ALL this fall.
Hawkeys,
I cashed in my chips yesterday, and chose UCSD over UCI. Everybody I talked to, i.e. UCLA faculty, recent UCSD grads and just random friends told me that it's a great program and I should go for it. But the recent grads did mention that the basic science work load is high the first two years, possibly higher than in other med schools. Wow, I cant believe poor UCI is going to be losing so many students to SD (I really did like UCI 🙁 But I think you are gonna be working hard at any medschool, might as well go to a school w/ a great clinical and basic science program. Also, I was told that UCSD grads come out skilled and thus have make great interns...we'll be happy in the end about chosing UCSD but we might have to work extra hard the first two years...any thoughts?
Since all of us new acceptees missed the second look weekend, any suggestions on how we can make up for it? 🙄
Yeah, anteater (you'll have to change your name now, he he), I was thinking the same thing about the second look weekend. If anything, maybe we could coordinate a few of us just going down there to take a look around. Maybe even look at some of the housing while we're at it. I know the second look weekends are supposed to be held before May 15th so that those holding multiple acceptances can choose - a second look weekend held now would be a waste of money for them. But we should try to get 10-15 of the new acceptances and let them know we're coming - maybe they'll do something for us.
As for the brutality of the curriculum - I know some pretty smart people who have gone there and got rocked. But they, nor their classmates, never failed. Remember, the people that get into UCSD are those who EXCEL academically. UCSD definately produces academic physicians. While other schools place more emphasis on EC's (not that UCSD doesn't), it's a lot like Washington U in that it really likes those who, I hate to say it, tend to be gunners. That said, if you're cool with possibly never being the top score, or graduating top of your class, you will be fine at UCSD. Like I said, it is rare that somebody fails. Just go at your own pace and be concerned with your own progress rather than the progress of others, and UCSD will probably make you a happy person. At least that's the attitude I'm taking about it. We'll just have to all suck it up for 2 years, have fun, enjoy the beach and community, and reap the benefits that UCSD will confer upon us when we're done. Those of us who are accepted - we truly are fortunate. Those still waiting - I want you all to get in. You all seem like such a great bunch of people to make up the class of 2006. See you all in the fall!
so, do you see yourself as a "gunner," Darwin? I truly am not being sarcastic here, just wondering. Because I know I'm not a "gunner," hence UCSD rep. concerns me greatly 😕
