I know that like many others who have their hearts set on U of Maryland that they were disappointed when they received that waitlst letter. I am currently on the waitlist and I would like to hear other people's experiences past or present and advice on how to get acceptance off the UMD waitlist. Positive vibes are very much appreciated!

Nothing to offer really...I'm kinda impatient now; the Committee still hasn't drawn up the waitlists, at least for my group (interviewed 3/12). I mean, I interviewed at another school at a later date, and have been holding that acceptance for awhile now.

nne, did they tell you where on the waitlist you are? I'm still waiting for my letter, to be sent next week. Supposedly if you're on the top or middle you have a shot. If you're on lower, then it's not good. PM me about this if you like, we'll try to corner the dean together and make him cough up our acceptances:laugh:

hey nne97080,

good luck getting off of the waitlist. the waitlist is tiered (low, middle, high)...i've been told from someone in the admissions office that it is numered as well...but applicants can only find out what tier they are in. If you are in the lower tier, "You should seek alternative options!" You should also continue WRITTEN correspondence...and LOI if you haven't already and update letters (semester's grades, publications, new ECs, etc.). i hope to see you and aznwangsta this august. PM me if you have any questions.

Definitely keep up the correspondence- every two weeks send a letter and try to make it somewhat significant. I was very persistant with waitlist status at my first choice (Udub) and I was accepted on Tuesday. This is good for you guys too- because I immediately contacted Foxwell at UMd and gave up my spot. Good luck!

Actually, I was told that we would know our ranks within the next two weeks. So I am waiting and hoping that it would be top. I know how you feel. I interviewed at maryland in january. It sucks waiting but I think it will be all worth it. I have faith.

Sooooo, any more thoughts about when we can expect this thing to start moving? It's so sucky to still be waiting this late in the game...I'd really like to know what's going to happen.

Yeah, I got my letter of waitlist today. It said that I'm on the top third of waitlist. Sounds good, but given that there are 180 on this list, I'm somewhere between 0-60, which is still a large difference for waitlist. Aug 18 is the last day to possibly be called for acceptance. This whole overlap with orientation and waitlist policy is really absurd.

Yeah I got mine after interviewing in early Jan. Dr. F said that one of the interviewer did not like me. I got placed on lower third meaning that I am between might have some hope and don't even think about UMD on the list of 180. While I feel bad, I am thankful to God for other options cause I would have died if UMD was my only hope! What do you guys think? Should I pull out from the waitlist or should I let it run its course? I sent the little letter, but I am still trying to decide if I should just go ahead and pullout. By the way congrats aznwangsta if you are on upper third I was told by someone on staff (extremely reliable insider) that you will most likely get in really.

Don't pull out! Unless you know you are called elsewhere for sure! Did Dr. Foxwell explain why the interviewer didn't receive you warmly? Maybe you can request from him another interview...I heard from someone that applied last year that you can actually request 2nd interviews...good luck, I'm rooting for the both of us to get in!

Well guess I will hang in there, but yes I do have other options so I am not too devastated. Thanks for the support, just would have loved to attend UMD

Anyone get off the waitlist yet??? I have some friends who declined Maryland recently...still waitin' for Dr. F to contact me.

Thanks for digging up this thread, I've been meaning to ask the same question. I haven't heard a thing. Any ideas if it's by phone, email or letter that we might be contacted? I want to know where my obsession would be best directed. 🙂

I called Maryland today. The secretary said that no one has been pulled off the waitlist yet this year because no one's withdrew! Can you believe this? It's mid-June! I know for a fact I have one friend that did withdraw. I dunno...I'm setting my heart out for Penn State cuz none of my waitlisted schools are givin' me love.

🙄

the economy plus a 50k+ a year budget at private schools must be attracting students to their state school

anywho, i guess umd, like other schools, gives out more acceptances than spots available during the admissions process...sucks that not enough withdrew to let some waitlisters in...but then again a lot of schools waitlists havent started moving yet...give it another week or so i guess

I was on Maryland's waitlist too (middle third). The woman in admissions I spoke to said that 200 acceptances were sent out for a class of 130. No one is going to be pulled until enough people withdraw thier applications to drop the class size below 130. I asked how many she expected to come off the list. She said some years they had taken up to 20 waitlistees.

Almost hopeless for those not in the top tier. I withdrew my application even though I would have really liked to go there. I am just sick of checking my mailbox everyday and don't need to prolong application hell until August 18th!

wow kong...that's depressing stats. Only 20? Why would they even have a middle and lower tier? Just in case the whole class goes down? From the US News site, they accepted 320 total last year. So I would expect if they sent out 200 thus far to accept the next 120...top and hopefully most of midtier??? anyone else have more input on our chances at this point? hope y'all have other places to go...

🙁

yuck, that's grim news...I definitely like your spin on it though, aznwangsta. who knows? good luck everyone!

Yeah, don't give up hope anyone. I was told that up to 20 people ENTER off the wait list. At this point, they may need to go 100 deep into the list to find 20 that haven't already made up their mind to go somewhere else, such as myself.

K.K.

Just a heads up.... things will probably start moving for you guys pretty soon.

I just got a letter from Maryland telling me to drop my other acceptance or withdraw my application. It was definitely a Form letter, so it looks like they're trying to put their foot down on people holding multiple acceptances.

Any Maryland news, I am glad to hear the last poster along with other Maryland acceptees is being forced to withdraw all but one acceptance...it is late june and I no longer wonder why this process takes sooo long.

Anyone know how well the upper and mid-tiers fared last year?

How is it that people still have multiple acceptances...? Is it just people who recently got accepted off waitlist elsewhere and debating which school to go to? Or there are rebel post May 15th acceptance holders?

I was pulled off the waitlist at Baylor, that's why I had multiples Accepts in June. And just for some finality, I officially w/d from UMD so somebody is getting off the waitlist for sure. Good Luck!
