Official Umdnj-som Class Of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was going to ask the same question about accepted students day so I'm glad you asked...and congrats!

Congrats to all those just accepted!!!

Can't wait till we meet each other on April 13th 🙂

Someone from SDN had IMed me wanting advice and I didnt get to it or write down the name. Whoever it was, you can send me a message on SDN or try me on aim again (though I'm rarely on).

If you are referring to a letter of rec, then no, it isn't necessary. However, I would strongly recommend that you furnish the office with one letter from a doctor, be it MD or DO ......

I was accepted to UMDNJ without a DO LOR but I have some strong recs from a few MDs. To echo what arsenewenger said, just make sure you have somebody (MD or DO) that can speak to your clinical side.

I didn't have LOR from DO or MD, and it wasn't a problem for me. But now that I think of it, my graduate advisor is an MD/PhD and wrote a letter for me...

Has anyone definitively decided on doing the Pre-Matric program?? I’m going back and forth on it – while I would love to get a head start on school, I am also cognizant of the expenses that I would have to bear by moving to Stratford early…

Any opinions? I’ve been out of school for a few years now, and though I remember a great deal of the undergrad material I was taught, I’m keen on getting back into the “swing of things.”

This is the first I've heard of it...

It is tempting me!
But I'm not sure about moving there early for it.

Thanks!

That's definitely something I'm going to consider since I haven't been in school seriously for ~2 years, but I don't know if I can afford to quit my job that early (esp if we're paying our own living expenses)

I'll have to weigh some pros and cons and do the math.

I actually haven't been in school seriously - EVER!
But whatever I was doing, it has been waaaay more than 2 years since!
Plus I wasn't a science major so I feel like it would be a real bonus. But again, it's that leaving work early and also basically having no summer!! 👎

i know that my friends who did pre-matric really enjoyed it and they seemed b tight b4 school started b/c they made friends earlier than the rest of us. and i c how it helps them now in things like anatomy, my pre-matric friends remember alot of stuff they did in the summer. i would've like 2 do it last summer but i had 2 work until the fri b4 white coat ceremony so that i could make enough money 4 that big amount of $$ u have 2 put down initially 4 an apt. if u can afford the time/cost, i think its a great idea 2 do (and some of my friends will b the teachers prob - me, i'll b doing research during the day.

Thanks Alchemist. Do you know if certain apt. complexes give you the first month of rent for free?? If that's true, then it would make moving down to stratford early a lot more feasible......

Thanks - more tempting even... yet giving up my last free summer like - EVER ....ooo.. that's tough.

in a way. if u tell them u're a student (some places ask 4 a copy of ur acceptance letter), then alot of them will take 1-2 months rent off. 4 echelon glen, they multipled the monthly rent by 11 and then divided it by 12 and that was the way they gave me 1 months rent. though they added $25 montly pet rent. i think my friend at timber ridge got 2 months off. stonington, chalet gardens, and kingsrow also had a similar offer if i remember. i'm not sure what the landings or lakeview do. just mention and ask 4 student discounts, i seem 2 remember that alot of places gave u deals on rent or lowered the security deposit. echelon glen the sec dep 4 a student is $200 but i had 2 pay the full deposit since i have pets. hope this helps

u have summer after 1st yr if u *really* wanna not do anything. but i wouldn't suggest it since residency programs like 2 c that u use ur time wisely. 2nd yr u don't get summer since rotations start in mid-june. though they do finish in may and have a month 2 study 4 boards but i know some ppl who r taking their boards early so they can use may as vacation time. maybe someone else online on sdn who did pre-matric can answer more specifically than me??

Hi everyone!

I received my acceptance letter in the mail today (very exciting)! Is that Pre-Matric program required because it said something about that on my acceptance letter. I'm wondering if any of your letters mentioned something about it being required. Thanks!

I don't believe it's required.

I'll have to go find my acceptance letter. Frankly I was more focused on returning the info than the specifics of the letter, but I didn't catch anything about the pre-matric program.

ok, I just checked my Acceptance Letter and it said nothing about the pre-matriculaiton program at all... 😕

I would assume they can't make you join the program. Well, they probably could, but they would more likely recommend it for certain students. I would check the wording of the letter.

pre-matric program is NOT required. its just sth the school offers 2 help ease students in the rigors/material in med school. maybe they're mentioning it in more recent letters cuz we getting closer 2 summer. i wouldn't sweat. sth nice 2 do and meet ppl early but don't worry, u won't b behind if u don't do it.

i 4got 2 say that 4 some students the office wants them 2 do pre-matric if they feel they would benefit from it due 2 some factor in their background. i don't want 2 elaborate on the exact reasons i heard but its the admin really trying 2 make sure everyone starts off at least at a similar background in terms of sciences.

did any of you start to fill out the fafsa form? any ideas on when we should start?

Yes - you can start any time. But I'm still waiting for my tax return stuff from work so I can file that, and then finish my FAFSA.... 😴

I might have been asked already, but do we have to enter our parent's info for FAFSA?

I actually did fafsa without yet filing taxes...You can return to it at a later point and updae ay information you need and they will readjust your report.
I believe most people do not have to include their parents' information (unless you fall into one of three categories specified in fafsa)
As far as umdnj policy goes, you can look on their financial aid website, under "financial aid applicaion instructions" http://www.umdnj.edu/studentfinancialaid/app_process/packet_forms.htm
The only problem is they have not yet updated this page for 07-08 school year (but i can't imagine too much will change)

Eh - I don't think so. I think if you're in a graduate program you're off the hook, but I didn't read the small print, either. Find out from an expert. 😀

u do not need 2 fill out parental info. only in specific situations like u r trying 2 get 1 of those disadvantaged social or economic background scholarships 4 example.

they just sent us out an email about applying 2 b ur pre-matric instructors. its tempting and it'd b cool and i meet the requirements but un4tunately, i'm will b doing research in piscataway during the class times. if only the classes were at night, then i'd get 2 meet u all early...

What kind of research Alchemist??

Good to know! Although I should have my taxes done this Saturday so it can all be just plain DONE! (ha ha - I WISH!!)

Does anyone know any current SOM students that purchased a condo?? Financially speaking, it seems pretty wise to pay for a condo rather than to burn your money on rent.....

I'm thinking about doing this...

UMDNJ seems like a place this makes a lot of sense, since you can stay for 3 or 4 of the years you're in school. Doing this for a place where you don't know what you're doing for year 3 & 4 doesn't seem to make any sense at all!

i know quite a few ppl who did this and if u have the money 4 the down payment, its a good idea. i think some ppl also have houses.

Just to clarify, Pre-matric IS required for SOME students. Please make sure to contact the office to make sure. Welcome class of 2011!

Did everyone get the calendar in the mail??!
Oh man - that September photo leaves me wondering.... WHAT were they thinkin'??!! :wow:

I just got the calendar today...
I don't get it.

I don't get what? The calendar? Or my comment about it?
I don't get the calendar, myself...or the act of sending it... but...okay. 😕

your comment. September seems normal enough.

Just something about hanging a picture on the wall of someone with their mouth wide open & like, 17 people huddled around her....
Strikes me as a bit bizzare, I guess...

So I've never filed for financial aid before... Once it has been processed what do you do? Call the school and beg?

you designate the school on the FAFSA. The school will automatically consider you for as much aid as possible. I imagine they'll discuss specifics about loans and scholarships(?) at accepted student's weekend.

Thanks! Okay so I just have to sit tight, hope, pray, cross my fingers, toes, whatever... Maybe there's some other form from the school on top of FAFSA? In fact, I think there is... isn't there?

It's quite possible. I haven't heard anything about it... but I assume they'll give us the form when it's available. Gotta get 'em the FAFSA before they can do anything...
