Official UNECOM class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Gioia and jmarra (and whoever else is going to the MOA conference starting Friday)...

Anyone planning on going to the UNE student thing Thursday night? I've got class late so I won't be making it, but I'll be there Friday morning. We'll have to figure out if/when we can get together sometime this weekend. See everyone friday.

Jon

Hi JonB!

I won't be going to the MOA conference, nor the student night, after all🙄 - prior engagement conflict...

However, would you mind posting your experience for the rest of us?

I'll actually be up there from Feb. 19-22, if you guys are around..

The former posts about coordinating a group meeting later in the summer sound great as well.

...have a good one🙂

Hey all,
What's the student night? Haven't heard about it yet...

I'm definitely up for meeting up later this spring. Wonder
how we can get in touch with some of the other students???

Allison

Hi Allison,

I guess you could go to the campus and hang out to meet students (?). Did you stay with a student when you interviewed? That is a good way to keep in touch with UNE life.

I am out of state right now, but the admissions and student life departments at UNE have been very helpful. 🙂

Sorry Allison,

Did you mean students like us, who are entering, or current students? Disregard my post if inapplicable.😱

Oops, my post was kinda unclear!!! Those were two separate
thoughts.

One thought was that I was curious about the UNE student night
everybody was chatting about.

The other thought was that I agree it would be terrific to get together
with other UNE 2008 folks before we get started this summer.

Sorry!! Allison

Hi Jon!
Glad to hear you had a great expereince! Sorry I couldn't make it up I had an emergency arise. Do tell us about the conference!

Also to everyone WHen do you think is a good time to set up a meeting of our class? I bet we could try to get in touch with Lisa Lane or someone to getg word out to the entering class.

Janelle

Maybe the first part of July?

That sounds like a plan. Im sure most of you will be settled in by early july. Also, since I live here and go to UNE now, let me know if any of you decide to come up. We can meet up and get to know each other. Ive been here for 4 years so I can give a pretty good tour of the area and the school itself.

I look forward to meeting all of you!

-Scott

Awesome, Shoddy18!

Thank you for the hospitality

🙂

What do you like most/least about living there?

Hello everyone,

I've been silently reading all your posts for the past year or so, and would like to thank you for all of the helpful hints, tips, information, and support you guys have provided. I applied to UNECOM in october, after waiting for my MCAT scores, got my secondary in january, and an interview for 2/5. My notification was sent out certified mail, and arrived on tuesday with nobody home. My mom got home too late, and was unable to track down the mail lady before she had to go to work. I was forced to wait the whole agonizing night until weds morning when she could go get it from the post office. She called me at 8 00 and let me know that I would be going to medical school at UNECOM next year. I look forward to arriving on campus and being a part of this class of 2008 with all of you!

Hello My fellow UNECOM classmates! Congrats Haskell on your acceptance!

I finally found the apartment I will be moving into early July. Yay! I was wondering if we could maybe set a date for our entire class to meet? I know it's a little early, but I know that a few of you have weddings to attend (and participate in) as well as other engagements already planned out.

Should we try for a weekend, when most people are off of work and out of school? How about Saturday July 10th? Is that alright for everyone?

Feel free to email me: [email protected]

-Kelley (from sunny Florida)

Congrats on your acceptance Haskell!!! I look forward to meeting you. Tell us about yourself. Where from?

How are you KMWMorris. I returned your PM and called your phone when you came up, but I never heard back after I left you a message. Sounds like everything went alright w/ the appartment search. Where did you find one? Hope all is going well. July 10th sounds like a great date. The condo i am moving into has a large gathering area w/ a BBQ grill, pool, etc., so maybe we could all get together there. On campus would be great to.

-Scott

CONGRATULATIONS HASKELL! Good for you 🙂

Sounds like things are wrapping up with getting the class list finalized. Did everyone go through the UNE website's list of apartments or the newspaper or call a realtor to get apartments? anyway, just being curious... Also Congrates Haskell, that's a relief isn't it? Well, best of luck finishing out the semester (for those of you still in school)! See ya this summer.

Jon B, D.O. (at least according to the Maine Osteopathic Association) 😀 see my above post 😀

way to go, haskell! 🙂 welcome to the team!

is anyone out there looking for roommates/know of anyone who is looking for a roommate starting in july? i'm just starting to look at places, but it would be nice to have a roommate set up before doing all the lease signing and all that ... if you're interested, send me a PM or AIM me at joanspice. i'm super easy to live with, dependable, responsible, and fun (all qualities of all future UNECOMers, right?) i've lived with guys and girls, random strangers and best friends, bookworms and partiers, and things always worked out in the past. maybe that says something about how great a roommate i am, i don't know ... 😉

hope you are all well and i wish everyone a happy valentine's day 😍 and three day weekend

joanie

Jonb, I found my apartment through the UNECOM website. i called a few of the landlords and asked a million questions, and then they all sent me pictures of the places to my email.

How is everyone doing with obtaining loans? I have filled out the FAFSA, but I don't know what I should do next.

IS JULY 10th OKAY FOR A CLASS MEETING/PARTY/GET-TOGETHER FOR EVERYONE?

1. Sweet J, will you be my friend??😀

2. Shoddy18, I just received number 2 PM this morning....

3. kwmorris, I personally cannot commit to an SDN/UNE meeting date yet: I will be overseas and in Cali. with dates yet to be finalized. However, I will go with the majority.

Should we wait until April to make plans, since more SDN UNE'rs might jump on board between now and then?

Hi.

This is my first post on this site and it is a good one! I am joining you guys as part of UNECOM class of 2008. It has been a long road so far with many interviews and tough decisions, but UNECOM is just too good to pass up. Well, anyways, now for trying to find a place to live/finding another male med student to live with, preferably a fellow 2008.

It has been a long road so far with many interviews and tough decisions, but UNECOM is just too good to pass up.

Congrats, outofit18!! You summed it up well!

outofit18 .... cheers!

kmwmorris ... wow, you must be super bored at work! i'll send you an email ...

gioia ... consider it done! now if only it were as easy to find a valentine as to find a friend ... 😛

and p.s. can i just add how pumped i am right now, since i just booked my flight to europe. 6 weeks of hostels, pubs, and museums!! woohoo!!

Sweet J,

Have a blast! I love it there. Maybe you'll find a belated valentine on some winding cobblestone street, outside of a cafe!😉

The ONLY sad thought that ever entered my mind about being a DO is that western European countries refuse to acknowlege a DO's license to practice medicine - only manipulation and OMM therapy.

HAPPY V-DAY EVERYONE😍 !

Congrats outofit!!! Welcome aboard!

Gioia: Maybe it would be better if we waited to set a date for the SDN/UNE gathering. Where are you going overseas? And where in California? I know that SweetJ lives in CA, so maybe you two can meet up!

JonB: How is Biochem going? 😉

SweetJ: I might be looking for a roommate soon. My place has 2 bedrooms.... I will let you know.

Peace,

Kelley

Hey guys,

Thanks for the warm reception. I will be making a trip up to the UNECOM, possibly tommorow, to get a feel for the areas around the school. Any thoughts on the best location to live? It seems like Saco is an ideal spot being close to UNECOM, and closer to Portland.

Hey Outofit, Where in boston are you from? I'm out the red line in Quincy, near the wollaston stop. Also, anyone else here from Boston?

Jon

Hey JonB,

I am from Davis Square, Somerville, on the other end of the red line.

Hey Crew!

I, too, will be joining you at UNECOM in July! I am anxious to meet everyone!

-sandiflipflops

Hi Sandiflipflops! I like your user name... WELCOME!

kwmorris : I will be in LA and Northern Europe visiting family- wanna come?

Yo outofit18,

what the hell you doing on SDN... shouldn't you be on your way to visiting UNECOM?

and way to come to our party last night. hahaha it was fun though.

-kingcer0x

Wow! I haven't logged on in a while and I've missed a lot!

Congrats to Haskell, OutofIt and Sandiflipflops.

You know, I think we should keep using our usernames
once we start school!!!! 😀 As a matter of fact, I'm looking
into my crystal ball and I see a sign outside a medical
clinic that says:

Shodddy 18, D.O.
Sandiflipflops, D.O.
jonb12997, D.O.
OutofIt18, D.O.

😉 Well, that one might scare people, but funny to think
about...

More soon!
Allison

Hi SANDIFLIPFLOPS! Welcome to our class! Where are you from? Somewhere near a beach I am guessing...

Gioia: I would love to go to Europe! When are you going?

Bluesunlily: How cold is it in MD right now? I am supposed to fly up there for my friend's graduation from the Naval Academy and need a heads up on the weather...

-Kelley
(kmwmorris)

I am also wondering about the weather in MD. Im giong to a conference in Baltimore Feb 26th - 29th. I was in D.C. this time last year and they had just gotten a huge snowstorm, and everyone was saying that that sort of weather was unusual.

-Scott

Hi!

For those of you inquiring about Maryland weather... I may be able to help you out. I go to school in southern PA, not too far from the MD border. Considering how chilly it has been, I must say that the weather we are experiencing right now, is quite nice: lower 40s and sunny.. not a snow flake in sight  Grab some mittens and come visit! Oh.. and leave your flip flops at home.

-sandiflipflops

Hey Everybody,

We've been having a chilly winter in general. Temps get into
the 40's somedays, but highs have mostly been in the 20's
and 30's. It's been a real bummer for my cycling season --
been having to train indoors.

The weather can change at the drop of a hat, though. When
you two are here it might be really sunny. In the meantime,
snow expected tonight...

Allison

For those of you who live close to UNECOM: What banks are in the area of Biddeford, or Saco? I need to switch to one that is up there...

Thanks!

-Kelley

I have been using peoples heritage bank ( a division of bank north) for the past 4 years. Ive been happy w/ them. You can do all of your banking online and what not. T he only ATM on campus is a peoples heritage one.

There are also many fleet banks in the area. Even though I havent used fleet in the past, I would have to recomend them. My girlfriend uses them mostly because it is a national chain, and pretty much anywhere you go in the North East has a branch, so you dont have to pay fee's for using an ATM.

hey all,

has anybody received anything from unecom recently? it's been
forever since i've heard from them...

also, anybody ancient like me? i'm 27 will be 28 be the time you
all meet me. anybody else take some time before starting med
school?

shodddy, if you want to grab a cup of coffee while you're down
in b-more let me know. i live right next to the hopkins undergrad
campus and about 3 miles from downtown.

allison

I called the Fin. Aid office today at UNECOM, and they said that I still needed to take the Entrance Interview and quiz online on their website, as well as choose a lender for my loans. I guess it was up to me to find all of this out, so I am glad that I called them! They said that they haven't started processing the med students' loan packets yet, and expect to receive my statement of how much money I am able to receive in 3 weeks. Until then, just relax and enjoy life!

Bluesunlily: sorry, i'm just a baby at 22 (as of today!)

-Kelley
kmwmorris

bluesunlily,

I would love to get together for a cup of coffe or something. Infact, a friend of mine who is also comming to the conference is currently an MSI at UNECOM. Ill bring her along to, incase you have any questions, she will be the one to answer them.

The conference I will be attending is the NCEMSF conference, hosted by the Johns Hopkins EMS Group.

The conference will be at:

Renaissance Harborplace Hotel
202 East Pratt Street
Feb 26-29

I will be staying in the hotel.

We wont be getting in until late thursday night, but I will be free to explore the city most of Friday the 27th, so that would be the best time for me. I have been through baltimore a few times, but only to the airport, so I have no idea how to find my way around the city. If you want, we could meet up at the hotel some time friday and go from there. Maybe you could show myself and some of my friends around the city.

Let me know what you think.

-Scott

Cool Scott! Friday will work just fine for me and
I've got a car and will be happy to show you around.

Will pm you with my phone number and more info!

Allison

p.s. I ran home for lunch and waiting there in the
mailbox was a letter to our class with some information!
WOW! Ask and ye shall receive, eh?

Hey Crew!

For those of you who have found apartments, where will you be living? I found a nice place just 0.9 miles from campus! There is a chance that I may be looking for a roommate, so let me know if you are in need of a place to live!

Happy Birthday Kelley! I'm a youngin' too - just turned 21 not too long ago.

-sandiflipflops

I know everyone is excited about getting started and getting to meet and greet all of us students, but I wanted to change the subject real quick and then we can go back to talking about parties and the such.
I am just about to submit my FAFSA and I was wondering if anyone filled out the part about their parents. It says that students chasing a medical degree should, but I am a married student with a new child of my own and figure that my parents won't be playing any part in paying for my education. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
And I plan on moving out in June, so keep any get togethers posted here so I can come.
Thanks.

Hi,

Happy birthday Kelley. I am 23, so I guess that puts me right in the middle of the age group. Just wondering if any of you are living in Saco? I think the prices are reasonable, or maybe that's because I've been paying Boston rent for the last 4 years! I am interested in living with another MS1 male, but haven't had a chance to meet anyone yet.

outofit18

I'm 21, but I turn 22 on easter sunday, so I'm in the younger crowd. As far as the FAFSA, I was told to not include your parents on the FAFSA b/c it'll be harder to get the full federal financial aid package (your estimated contributions will be higher). That's what I was told at one of my interviews anyway. That apartment so close to campus, is that year round? B/c if it is, that's great that you found that so close!

Jon

Hey Jon!

Yes, it's year round 😀 Have you found a place yet?

-sandiflipflops

Hey, that's great that you found that so close to campus! My fiancee and I found an apartment like a mile out pool st. It's a little over 3 miles to campus (197 Pool st, I know other COM students live there). So we're liking that, plus we get to have our Maine Coon Cat live there with us. Kind of cool!

Jon

  happy birthday kelley!!!

about the financial aid stuff ... at one of my interviews, i was told to fill out the parent information part no matter what. and on the fafsa i think it says that if you're born before january 1, 1981 you're categorized as independent and it doesn't matter what your parent info says. i'm not sure what the deal is if you were born after that date (i'm 23 and will turn 24 right before we start school). i could be wrong about all of this, but that's what i remember ...

for those of you in new england ... are there wells fargo banks? and does anyone know anything about verizon service in the area? i'm stuck on a contract for a while, so hopefully the coverage won't be too dreadful.
