Official- USF COM Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok guys...The last time I looked at this thread was 24 hours ago and I am really surprised to see how much activity there is on it since! I am really happy because I started the thread. 😀 To address the out of state student issue, I was told at my interview that they will be accepting 10 out of state students for the first time this year. So those of you on the waitlist hang in there!!! Next about the classrooms, I was at USF a little over a week ago and Mr Larkin said that we would be using the school of nursing classrooms because the old classrooms are too small to house the students and faculty, but that they are upgrading the nursing ones with wireless and they are going to be ready for us in the fall. Thanks for all the info on books, it was a real help. For those of you who are currently med students, you guys have a big brother big sister program i take it because the girl I hosted with for my interview offered to be my big sis and she has lent me a bunch of her books and she too confirmed that a lot of books are not worth buying, that class notes suffice. Current students, correct me if I'm wrong on this big bro big sis thing. So those of you who hosted with someone for your interview contact them I'm sure they have some hand me downs that they can lend you before they start studying for the boards. If not wait for the fall and I'm sure you will be assigned a big bro big sis that can guide you accoridingly. I can't say for sure that you will all be as lucky as I am because I love my big sis she is amazing!!!! If you guys run into any problems don't hesitate to pm me because I can ask the few current students that I know there. Thanks to the current MIs and MIIs that have been posting on here as well. Its been a great help. Congrats to all of you who have been accepted and good luck to those of you who are still waiting. I have my fingers crossed for you guys! Let us know when you get in so we help each other out! Go class of 2008!!!! :luck:

Yes, there is a big sib program at USF, in addition to a few other support group stuff.....you'll see, but it does make adjusting easier.

Also, looks like I was wrong on the classroom thing as I reread the email we got from one of the deans because I got the room numbers mixed up. Looks like we will be in the newly remodelled classrooms in the Nursing school. Those rooms are bigger but the seats sucked, and they already have wireless in those classrooms (we had our Profession of Medicine and Ethics classes in the nursing classrooms at the beginning of last year). Hopefully the seats and tables will be much better now. But I was right about the new labs though. Lots of people study in the labs so new furnishing in there will be sweet.

For anybody who's wondering about getting your ID card.... I went to the St Pete branch yesterday and was told you can't get it til Aug9. That's false according to Dean Nicolosi: you have to bring you acceptance letter as proof that you're in the incoming class ONLY if you go to another branch besides Tampa. If you go to the Tampa one then you're fine. Apparently the instructions we got in the mail left out this detail (now to spend another hour driving to USF and back....)

Oh, and the St. Pete Times has an article on page 1B today (June 9) about some professors leaving. Anyone know the implications of this? I wouldn't think that we would be affected.

2 doctors quit faculty of USF medical school
By LISA GREENE, Times Staff Writer
Published June 9, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two prominent doctors have left the faculty of the University of South Florida College of Medicine, the latest in a series of developments prompting changes at the school.

Dr. Robert Christensen, chair of USF's pediatrics department and physician-in-chief at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, has left to work for a large hospital and health care group in Utah.

Dr. Robert Clark, chair of USF's radiology department, resigned after changing jobs at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa.

Those vacancies became public a few days after USF officials confirmed the school's anesthesiology residency program has been put on probation. The school's dean was told to resign last fall after asking faculty members to donate to a political campaign.

USF is no different than many medical schools that are seeing rapid turnover in a changing environment, said Dr. Robert J. Belsole, interim medical school dean and interim vice president of the health sciences center.

"Medicine is changing quite a bit, and we're being faced with changes in the clinical arena as well as the research arena, and you have to be on top of things, make up for things that come down from funding sources," Belsole said.

Tight funding for research and teaching positions, combined with a shortage of doctors in some specialties, makes it hard to keep medical faculty members, he said.

Christensen, a well-known neonatologist, has family in Utah and accepted a job with Intermountain Health Care that offered more research potential, USF officials said. Christensen, who is between jobs, has sold his St. Petersburg home and could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

"It's a great opportunity for him," said Dr. Lynn Ringenberg, director of USF's pediatrics residency program. "This was a decision that the chair felt was too good to pass up."

Christensen began looking for a job working with researchers he knew after several of his key lab researchers left, Belsole said. The pediatrics chair also is difficult because it involves working in Tampa and St. Petersburg, Belsole said.

Clark resigned from the USF faculty and as chair because he changed jobs at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, Belsole said. He resigned as chief of service for radiology service to become clinical director of its new Molecular Imaging Laboratory, according to a Moffitt memo.

"I brought Clark in and asked him to stay as chairman and he chose to resign," Belsole said.

USF's radiology department has less control over imaging equipment than departments at most medical schools, Belsole said, and that has been frustrating for the faculty. Many medical schools have their own hospital or own at least part of an imaging center.

Clark did not return calls Tuesday, and Moffitt officials had little to say about the change. Clark has been involved with Moffitt's work as part of a nationwide trial sponsored by the National Cancer Institute to screen heavy smokers in an effort to detect lung cancers earlier.

Belsole has asked Dr. Martin Silbiger, a former dean and radiology chair, to become interim chair of radiology. But the departments could remain without permanent leadership for some time. Belsole said he is unsure whether he would appoint permanent chairs since he is the interim dean.

Belsole said he decided this week that he probably will apply for the permanent job. He stressed that the changes mirror challenges faced by other medical schools and said 90 of the nation's 126 medical schools have named new deans since 2000.

"You go to a meeting and the oldest dean there has only been there three years," he said.

The two empty chairs could trigger a site visit from the group that accredits medical schools, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. That group visited the school's anesthesiology program after its chair departed and recently put its residency program on probation.

Belsole said he is not worried about the anesthesiology program's future.

"Most of the citations already are taken care of," he said. "There is no citation that is really a death threat. If we get our ducks in order, we can get it reversed."

Citations against the program included having too few anesthesiologists to supervise medical residents during evening and weekends, canceling educational conferences and not having medical residents see patients after surgery.

Documents from the council say USF put a new policy for seeing post-operative patients in place last December, but that was after the site visit.

I don't think this has any implications at all, at least for students, but it sucks to have more bad publicity at USF, especially after that Dean of the COM fiasco a few months ago, since it's really a good school.

One: The anesthesia program was put on probation a few weeks ago. That is old news.. Actually, I think it has been almost a month and a half/two months at this point. There are many reasons that things occur that you will not read in the newspaper. If you are worried about the residency program in anesthesia and you haven't started, you need to relax. Worry about the fantastic education that you will get and how you will make the most of it. Oh, and big deal. J Hopkins was on probation for a while due to hour issues of their residency. So stop stressing. Even the best of the best and the worst of the worse have problems. Cannot be avoided. Just work hard and worry about yourself.

Two: Stop worrying about school. You have enough worrying to do when school starts.

Three: SolidGold... GET OFF THE 'PUTER and let's go get a beer! 🙂

Four: Everything SG said was on target with the books.. Listen to him. He knows what he is talking about.

Five: I hope out of state tuition isn't what they told us it was going to be this year (they always publish an out of state rate). It was through the roof...

Good luck to everyone, stop stressing, go relax, don't be a gunner and play hard while you still have the time.

Physical Diagnosis
Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination - a must buy!!!!

Before you buy this book, wait until you get to school. You can find it cheaper online than in the bookstore, however, it will be cheaper if you buy it in the bookstore in the long run. You will HAVE to purchase the online access to take your quizzes and such and that will run you about 25-40 bucks. (I cannot remember for the life of me).... So for what you will save, just wait, or buy a used copy of the book online then order the access through the company that produces it.....

Allygator, out of state tuition is $50,000 for this year. Amazing isn't it.... why would you go to USF as an out of stater? I don't get it

Thanks for the advice on the book allygator and thanks for the info solid gold. I have no idea what happened a few months ago with the "Dean of the COM fiasco" so if someone could enlighten me on this subject it would be helpful. While I was in Tampa my mom read another article in the paper about how USF doesn't pay their professors very well and that is why a lot of them are leaving. Of course they were talking about the university as a whole but my mom freaked out and wanted to know if the teachers there were good. I was trying to calm her down and tell her that no matter where I go to medical school the education will be the same...after all we will all learn the same stuff and we are all going to be doctors. Solid Gold and Allygator, if you guys have any thoughts on this and on how the professors are it would be really helpful 🙂 Thanks so much for all the advice. Oh and for those of you who are freaking out about the parking permit and id cards and what not, it was all in the student affairs packet that was mailed to us. Everything can be done by mail so for those of you who don't live in the Tampa area, don't worry about driving down. They will mail you your id card and parking permit so you have it ready for the first day of school. 🙂

I don't get it either... It amazes me that people would try to even get in out of state. Yes, they do accept out of staters, however, no one is crazy enough to pay tuition out of state.....

Last year it was in the $40K+ range.... Man. What a way to blow $40K...

🙂

As for in state tuition, it's a bargain but I thought it would be a few thousand cheaper than the quoted estimate of $15k or $16k, I forget the exact amount off the top of my head. For some reason I pictured $12k, but I guess I can't complain considering the alternatives.

Hey all!
zinjanthropus suggested that we all should limit our posts to this thread just so we don't have to check both. So tell anyone you know who is going to USF in the fall to start postin on this thread 😀

In response to what DrPharoax said about all of us meeting up at orientation with our SDN screennames on our name tags so we can put names to faces :

I seriously agree that we should somehow plan to meet somewhere during orientation so we can all put a name to a face. How do people feel about chatting on aol instant messanger? I wouldn't mind giving my screenname out because after all we are going to be students together for 4 years. So if you guys woudln't mind chatting on aol instant messanger for those of you who have it PM me the screenname or post it as a reply to this thread. 🙂

well - i'm glad people are agreeable to limiting posts to this thread - much simpler than checking both.

SK14CAT - the quality of professors is fine at USF. Many of the graduate programs are rated highly and, as you know, the medical school is monitored by a national standards group. If you check Chronicle of Higher Education, you can see that the overall pay rates for faculty are not too bad for USF but you have to consider two things..1)all florida public universities are below the national average for junior and senior level faculty and (2) the cost of living is low in tampa compared to many other cities with major universities, thus the salary can be lower.....i believe that i saw the same article you referred to but the writer didn't take these points into account

the article actually compared usf professors pay to that of uf, fsu and even fiu, usf being the lowest. to tell you the truth i didn't even read the article it was my mom who did and she was all concerned. but thanks for your info 🙂

Can anyone PM me with any apartment info they found? I'd like to get an idea before I head there.

So far I understand to stay north of Bear Ave. and Bruce B. Downs and that Tampa Palms is nice and that going further north is cheaper.

Thanks for the link, mikedc.

What is everyone doing this summer? Just curious as to how everyone is relishing their last summer break for a while....
I'll start, I guess. I just got back from Europe. It was a month-long trip cut a little short because my friend I was traveling with became VERY ill and we had to be evacuated from Geneva. Oy vey. Other than that, it was a wonderful 2 1/2 weeks in France and Italy.

Now that I'm back, I'm working a menial summer job, catching some rays, and savoring every minute of this HOT Florida summer.

Tomorrow, I'm heading to USF to get that ID card and parking pass. Don't forget, if you're going, to bring your USF acceptance letter as proof that you're enrolled.

Everyone else?

About apartments...I used to live in an apartment complex near USF; it's about 2 miles from the campus...

My aptmt was 2 bed/2 bath for 690/month, I think...theyre really nice apartments. i think they also have townhouses and such...

It's called the Plantation Apartments...I don;t think many people know about them; they're located right behind the 7-11 on 56th, near Fowler...for school, u would just hop onto Fowler and you're right there...

Check it out if you're looking for something!

My summer: lots of pool, lots of Xbox, going back to my old job as surgery front desk clerk at Shands hospital (saving money for stuff....mainly a laptop).

I might hit up a theme park or two, and I want to take a road trip to St Augustine sometime in July.

😀

SolidGold-
I noticed that you said earlier that Gross doesn't begin until November. If anatomy is 200 hours and spans only the fall semester, how is this possible? J

Also, is the curriculm table from the usf web site accurate? Thanks!

http://www.med.usf.edu/MD/curric.htm

I know this was for SG, but I'll answer this anyway....

Profession of medicine: 3 weeks. This should end by the end of August.
Biochemistry: 10-14 weeks or so. This ends by the first week of November.
Anatomy and Physiology: Starts in early-mid november and runs through April.
Neuroscience: Starts at the end of April and runs until June.

For DrLexygoat:
My summer is consisting of chilling, working and then moving to tampa. Just trying to get as much r and r before med school starts. Mike, DrPharoax, and I have already started chatting on aim and its made asking questions a lot easier. We are (well at least I am) eagerly awaiting the rest of your aim screennames so if you are so inlcined let us know so we can get more acquainted! :luck:

Yeah! We are movin' on up!!!! Thats great news 😀

Hey guys... Mr. Larkin called me this morning...I'm in!!! 😛 See you guys in August. 🙂

Congratulations Jenn!!!!!   PM the rest of us your aim Screen name. A bunch of us have already started chatting. See you in august!

Oh one more thing I forgot.... I'm sure a lot of you have already gotten the packet from 12-pac..those of you who have been getting in off the waitlist I'm sure it will be in the mail soon. Anyways, I have been talking to Kareem one of the 12-pac chairs about getting us a message board for USF. Don't get me wrong I love SDN but a lot of it is now geared towards the people who are applying right now. It takes a while for me to scroll down and find this thread. He thinks we are gonna get one real soon so I will keep you all posted and as soon as I know I will post the link to it on this thread! 😀

Is anyone here doing the prematric program? I was just wondering how that was going. I got onto the Blackboard and started looking at some of the powerpoints for anatomy. Just letting people know that there is some material up if you want to get a head start and are not in the prematric program.

Congrats Jenn 👍 See you in August 😀

Congrats, Jenn and to everyone else who got in! I will be joining you guys in August-got in off the waitlist in early May. I'm finally joining this thread (1st post on SDN, actually).

so the 12-pac committee forget a wee little detail on that sheet they sent us about for order shirts, lab stuff, etc: who to make the check out to. i already asked, so maybe this post will save them a few emails. we're supposed to make the checks out to Peer Advisory Committee.

on a related note, does anyone know what the 12 refers to in 12-pac? or for that matter, what exactly they do?

Congrats Jenn!!!

12 refers to 12 people on the Peer Advisory Committee. They are 12 people from the class before you that organizes events so you guys can meet some upperclassmen and ask them any questions you might have. They also set up the whole big sib program. They also do a few other things as well, all to benefit the new incoming class. I guess you guys might have already gotten info about what activities are being planned.

😀 😀 😀 😀

The prematrics have the biggest advantage in that they work with the cadavers early, but just looking at these powerpoints might be useless without an anatomy book to go along with it.

Ok, I think I caught up now that I have my Road Runner back

Congrats to Anitsrch as well! Its good to see people posting on this thread again it was dead for a while. Still trying to get us our own message board keep you all posted on that one! See u all in august!

I just wanted to say what's up to the USF Class of 2008. I was accepted in early May off the waitlist. I did my undergrad at USF and have lived in Tampa for the majority of my life so if anyone has any questions about the area feel free to ask. I look forward to meeting everyone in August. SK14CAT, starting this thread was an awesome idea and I already feel like this is going to be a very tight class.

USF Class of 2008!!!

What's up with this Professions of Medicine class? Like I was surprised to see we're supposed to read a book beforehand. Anyone have anymore details?

POM is a 3 week long class that gives you a feel of what medicine is like, its a pretty easy class. You have a couple of group presentations to work on though so there is some busy work and its 8:00 to 5:00 everyday 😴 . What book are they having you guys read? We did not have to read anything beforehand.

We have to read "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" by Tolstoy. It's very short- 125 pgs. We don't have to read it beforehand. We were just told we will have to read it, and of course we're free to start it before august.

Here's an important question I haven't seen addressed yet: How's the food over in the HSC cafeteria? Tasty? Expensive? Healthy?

I picked up the book last week on my trip to Tampa. Being the eternal summer-slacker that I am, it is still in its bag... the book can wait for a while.

I've decided not to do the prematric program, for purely selfish reasons. I really want, and I think, deserve this summer break. I'm enjoying waking up at 10am every day, catching some rays. I know a few people who took it last year and while they said it was a good class, you tend to forget everything by the time gross and biochem comes around again.

Is anyone planning on doing any refreshing over the summer? I may need to look at my biochem and/or anatomy book. Anyone recommend this or should we go purchase the books for next year and use them?

Congratulations to all those who are getting in off the waitlist!!!! The more the merrier 😀

"The Death of Ivan Ilyich" by Tolstoy

Yeah, we had to read that too, but not during POM. We had to read it during our Ethics course during block B1 (after POM). I don't even remember why we had to read it.

Hey all....I just wanted to thank you guys for the encouragement and I wish anyone else on the waitlist goodluck =) I am heading to Tampa tomorrow to search around for places to live......I saw some previous posts about apartments...if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know 😛

Oh yeah.. my AIM Screenname is Neongirl82....if anyone is chatting send me a message 😀

For all those interested in chatting, my screenname is USF2BDOC.

USF College of Medicine Class of 2008

Thank you to everyone who has been posting on this thread!!!!! I think we have gotten pretty aquainted with everyone so far and have all exchanged aim screennames...except for few of you! So what are you guys waiting for? and if you have friends who are going to be in our class too please tell them to post on this forum. and a great big shout out to USFGRAD for posting that reply about me. you are very welcome for starting this thread....and speaking of which.... we are going to have our very own forum on a usf website! you will all be getting a letter from 12-pac in the mail about it with instructions on how to join. How a know all of this you ask? Well I have been speaking with one of the 12-pac chairs Kareem and asked him if there is any way we could have our own message board through usf and the request was granted! I don't know about what everyone else thinks but I think SDN is now more for the class of 2009 as they have started their application cycle. So more info on that soon and if you guys don't receive any info on it in the mail you can pm or im me, same username for both and I will be happy to help you out. I think they are still trying to work out a couple of kinks.
Ok, about Ivan, I already read it and for those of you who haven't you are not missing much you can read it in a couple hours and I have been told that if you read it this early you will have to read it again during the class. Drlexygoat, please don't think about studying (this is the advice that has been coming from the class of 2007). Just relax and don't worry about summer reading or getting a head start on anatomy. at least we are not like UM who has to read 5 summer reading books which are all required to be complelted before school starts. and for all of you who are worried about the prematrics having a head start, I was told by the class of 2007 that those who did it last year really didn't have a one-up on the rest of us and actually they were very tired and burnt out by the time may came around. So just have fun this summer! We all deserve it!
I'm really happy that we are all getting know each other and I am super excited about meeting all of you in August. I can already tell that this is going to be a great class!

Oops forgot one last thing... if you guys need any advice on books or want to know anything about our first year IM Kareem one of the 12-pac chairs who's screenname is KAbdelfatt. And a special thank you to SolidGold you have been sooooo helpful. I really appreciate all your advice and active posts 🙂

Ok drumroll please.... ta da! We have our own forum on a USF message board.
