Ohio State 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks so much @indysadventures - I do have to say, as someone that is doing this the first time (and juggling jobs and applications like everyone else on here) - this is not clear. After cross checking the tOSU email from earlier this week, then a clarification date email from tOSU, the presentation and the pdf.....and several of these forums (SDN and FB) - then the 2/15 date changed to 2/28; I am now walking away believing that for first years nothing needs to be filled out by 2/15 or 2/28? As long as we have filled out the FAFSA we are good?

That is what I understand as well, but it is so confusing, why send all that additional info? I think it’s just disorganization?

Yes, at the very least it's elaborate information so there's a lack of realization of how it reads to first year uninitiated audiences. Not that I want to talk about more confusion......but now that I have overanalyzed all the communication; across the communications they say we'll hear on final financial aid packages "before April 15", "by March" and then most confusing "in April or May". If one has to commit to a school by April 15, learning about final financial aid packages in May doesn't help, right? Or am I wrong on this?

For those of you who signed up to go to the admitted students day Feb 22, did you get a confirmation email after paying?

Yes, mine went to my junk though, so check there if you haven't already! It was sent from someone named Valerie Deramo so you know what to look for.

Genuinely a little upset with the whole FASFA thing right now. I submitted it today (February 15th the deadline day), about at 7:37pm CT which should have been plenty of time before midnight. However, now it says I submitted it February 16th? I am no clue why it is saying this. It says submission date February 16th. I will be so devastated if it turns out I didn't meet the deadline.

Does anyone know where the dinner will be on Friday for the Why OSU day? I don't think they mentioned it anywhere.

Are there tours and stuff for you guys this week? There have been many groups of people in the hospital who look bright eyed and energetic lately and are being shown around by current students.
We've got admitted students day on the 21st and 22nd!

omg i’m here i wanna know who you are hahaha
I was about to say me too, but then I actually paid attention to who posted it and I do actually know her 😂

Following this weekend, can someone please comment on how the dinner/ welcome day is? My daughter and I are trying to decide if I should accompany her in March, and if so, if I should attend both the dinner and lunch, or just dinner. We are unsure if there is information at the Friday dinner, or just throughout Saturday. Any information would be appreciated 🙂 and congratulations to all!

Hi! Fellow 2nd year! I brought my mom with me back when I went to my “welcome weekend” for the entirety and most people brought their parents too. At the dinner there is a faculty panel and you sit with student ambassadors. The following day there are student panels and tours. It’s a great opportunity for families to see our facilities 🙂

This is so helpful, thank you so much!!

just so I'm on the same page as everyone- we are NOT filling out any of the ScholarshipUniverse applications as first years? I'm still confused lol

... im still doing it because they haven't sent an actual email telling us it isnt for incoming 1st years 😳

Sorry I haven't seen any of this until now - you all are NOT meant to be filling out the Scholarship Universe forms. Those are strictly for current students, not matriculating incoming first years for fall. You guys unfortunately won't be eligible for any of those scholarships, only recruitment scholarships (which you will absolutely hear about by April 15 at the latest, likely much earlier) and ones that you solicit from outside organizations on your own. There is no situation in which you would receive one of the Scholarship Universe ones even if you apply, hence why you weren't emailed about these. You will be able to take out the full cost of attendance in a combination of Direct Unsubsidized and Grad Plus federal loans, there is no question about that no matter how much debt you currently have. The only situations in which you would not receive full CoA would be if you are not going to enroll at least half time, if you are currently in prison, or if you are currently or previously defaulted on any loans or have recently declared bankruptcy. Having a poor or no credit score or a lot of outstanding debt are not disqualifiers, unless you are not making payments.

I really wish they would send an email clarifying this because if I didn't use SDN I'd have zero clue we weren't meant to do it. In the financial aid email, they linked a presentation that included Scholarship Universe an an option for us 🙃

Hi! I was at the admitted students day today and loved it. I was unable to attend the Friday night dinner but it was still absolutely worth it to come on Saturday for the presentations and tour. My mom came with me and it seemed most people either had a parent or a significant other there.

Thank you to everyone on staff/current students that talked with us. It was SUPER helpful and I felt right at home :,) I have some tough decisions to make but truly this school is exceptional

I filled them all out and sent them in because the instruction did not specify to NOT do it, reading all of this now it appears it was a waste of considerable time. So how as a first year can we make an informed decision if we do not know what we are being offered for financial aid before the April commitment date? I am very stressed about this.

Sandra Dawkins posted a comment in the APVMA Facebook that they are aiming to send out scholarship information but the end of March for accepted students

@Natalie22 thank you for the info! Elsewhere "by the end of April" was mentioned, I think in the email that we received. A lot of information is coming at us and what is "1st year info" and what is "2nd-4th year info" is not clear.

@BaxtersMom I attended with my parents and I think it is absolutely worth your time. The Friday dinner does hold quite a bit of information so I would recommend attending. The Sat session is informative, the tour guides do not wear microphones so I recommend standing as close to the guide as possible. You do not get to tour the large animal hospital which was disappointing. It is a very impressive program.

Thank you for this information! She is really struggling to make a decision (blessed to have options!), so I think it's important to attend both events! She and I will be there 🙂 Best of luck to you and congrats on your acceptance!

I would pretty much plan to make the decision about where you're attending vet school based on the posted anticipated tuition, disregarding any possible recruitment scholarships. It's unfortunately a pretty small number of people that get recruitment scholarships, and it's unlikely to be a significant enough amount of money to make a real difference in the face of 4 years of debt. The VIN Cost of Education map is likely to be your best resource about how to figure out the best financial deal:

Recieved by file review today after being denied, It states that "I need more experience working with more animals besides handling and husbandry"

Which does not make sense, because I have around 3,000 hours of working as a veterinary assistant (doing much more than 'husbandry/handling') and doing surgery monitoring. At my clinic, we see all animals from farm, food, companion, exotic, avian, etc. and I put that on the application

Has anyone had this happen before?

This happened to me last cycle! The feedback like did not match my application lol I didn’t reapply bc I didn’t even know what to really fix.

Good to know that it was not just me lol, Ohio was one of my top choices, and the only school that I got straight up denied from before interviewing, so it was just frustrating that the feedback did not seem to make sense.

They have stressed to us that even just getting a job at a farm or a non-veterinary job in general does look very good on your application. Sure you know how to restrain a pig for an exam or even place a catheter in a ruminant but that doesn’t necessarily mean you know normal behavior, routine farm procedures, etc. especially since your clinic is mixed practice and you don’t work with certain species on a daily basis. Personally I think they really like lab/lab animal experience. A lot of the students here have some form of lab experience. I was rejected for a low GPA my first cycle but my second cycle I got a lot of hands on work with lab mice and was accepted without really increasing my GPA a lot.

I also did volunteering with feeding farm animals, volunteering with horses, as well as hundreds of hours working with laboratory animals, and doing research studies with them

Two out of three times that I got feedback I felt it did not really match up to my application lol

I applied on the Scholarship Universe webpage. They didn't say NOT to do it in the email, plus I was sent the information. Why send it out to students it isn't applicable to? Oh well, I will be redoing it if/when there are any I am applicable for.

Because you've been added to a listserv as someone with a Buckeyelink account, therefore you will get email intended for the entire student body. You TECHNICALLY CAN apply for it, but there are VERY few scholarships to which you are qualified. I understand it's annoying, but it's an overall administration issue from the financial aid department.

Thank you for this information as well! I agree with you, NCSU is her cheapest option. She is going to the welcome student event at tOSU and UF and will likely be at NC. She'd love to be at Ohio, but the extra debt makes it hard to choose it. (As she'd be happy at any of the 3 as far as program and location 🙂. (apologies if you reply wasn't for me lol, but we appreciate any and all advice!)

The cost between my IS and OSU is not a large difference, with the IS being slightly more expensive. They (my IS) will come out with financial aid packages in March, so I wanted to know if OSU will come out before April 15th

It did not read like a listserv email - it was an email to accepted students. But thank you for your response, clarity from anyone is helpful.
