Hi all!! I know it's usually crickets for Oklahoma State, but I'm a native that's been in Los Angeles for the past ten years and am returning to the country, so I have no issues being a bit louder 😀 Just wondering if there's any fellow Okies out there, or future ones! :hello:

There are actually quite a few current students that are on here pretty regularly and I'm sure would be happy to help with any questions you have. 👍:luck:

I'm applying to OK state this year too. I was hoping I wouldn't be the only one on sdn. Never been to Oklahoma though. I will be doing an internship there in September and I am very excited about going.

I'm applying instate. I've been out of school 2 years, but decided to apply for the first time this year!

The people are really great. The scenery is varied depending on going east or west, mostly very flat, but lakes are found throughout, and the thunderstorms in the spring are like no other!!

There usually ends up being more that come out as the process goes on. I ended up applying there last year. And like Emiloo said, there are e few ok state regulars around that should be able to answer any questions.

I'm preeeeeetty sure I'm applying to OK! It wasn't on my original list of schools because of pre req, but I ended up planning to take that class anyway. The vet I work with who is writing me a LOR went there and told me to look at the school and think about applying there. I like what I see so far!

Hey there Ok-State applicants. I'm one of those current students people mentioned. I'm about to start 3rd year. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and I will try my best to answer them. Good luck with all of your apps!

Samesies. Lissa is in state, and I'm out of state, so we should be able to cover most questions 🙂

Hooray!!! Glad to have three on board already

I do actually have a question as to the workload. Have you found that you can sustain a part time job or is there just too much on your plate with school? In undergrad, I've been carrying 20-25 units while still working part time, but it killed me.

Oh, and also what are the research opportunities? I think I saw something that was a summer internship, but don't remember what research was involved. My interest lies in food animal, narrowed down even more to poultry and the spread of disease by wild birds for organic free range farming, and would love to be able to have lab access. However, this interest could probably wait until I get my DVM :xf: and go after a PhD later. What is everyone else's planned field of study?

clinical practice for sure for me! after that... who knows! I have done a lot in small animal practices and I love it, so I could very easily do that. but I'm keeping my options open 🙂 I love horses and could find myself enjoying working with small ruminants and exotics to some extent. Also thinking about zoo medicine. I guess we will have to wait and see!

Hey applicants! I applied to OK State on a whim last year (OOS, on my third cycle, oh god someone just accept me) and they did! So I am getting ready to move out there in August and start classes. Definitely talk to the current students on here, they are invaluable in terms of knowing the program and the area and are great about answering questions. The admissions office is also really great, and always willing to answer questions about the programs.

Good luck on your applications!

I have alot of experience with horses as well as small ruminants, swine, and cattle. I would love to goninto research, I have been involved in quite a few undergrad research projects. They do have a dual DVMPhD program but you have to be accepted into the DVM program first. I would love to do research in immunology and vaccine development. I currently work at a pathology lab and I find infectious disease to be fascinating as well.

Huzzah!! :hardy: Glad you got in. You'll have to drop us a line once you start classes and let us know what you think :highfive:

Depends on the job. If you can find a job thats flexible days from week to week, those are easiest. Big plus if it lets you do work while you're there. I worked second semester first year, in the teaching hospital. Overnight shifts on weekends, 2-3 shifts a month, without an issue. Continued that job second year, and took on a training horse as well, which was great. Only took up an hour or so 3 days a week, and I could skip days and change times as needed to fit my schedule (Plus, it was great stress relief!). A lot of my classmates work a lot more than I do, but I like the flexibiity my jobs give me. I'm a pretty cruddy student when it comes to studying in advance and being organized 🙂 Most important thing to remember is that working can be great during the light weeks, but on heavy exam weeks and finals and all that, it might be the last thing you want to worry about. I personally would give yourself the first semester to settle in and then decide for yourself if you can take on some more.

👍 Since I don't work, I figured I would let you handle that one.

Thanks! That was the answer I was hoping for👍

This is actually a super-helpful response for me as well! 😀 I was hoping to be able to work in the hospital some 2nd semester (or maybe foal watch in the spring, because babies!), and still have time to ride my horse. This is reassuring! Thank you!

Does anyone know how much weight is given to gpa, gre etc. I did see they have quantitative at 70% on the website but I was just curious how that might be further broken down.

I personally am hoping they place more emphasis on GPA rather than GRE, cause I screwed up my test pretty hard core 🙁 but have a really great GPA. I am planning on retaking it though to give myself insurance.

From what I remember, they give you a 'score' based on several things - each of the 3 sections of the GRE, your cum GPA, and your required courses GPA. The bio GRE used to be a factor as well, but not anymore.

I'm considering applying to OK state. I don't have the required zoology course because my school didn't offer any, only animal sciences, but I meet (or can meet if I take and do well on the bio GRE) all the requirements to petition for consideration of eligibility for admission that are mentioned in the brochure. I'm still looking into it though!

Would any current students like to list some things you love about the school? I'd love to learn more! 🙂

They don't require the bio gre anymore.

If you look at the website, I believe you can substitute the zoology course with any animal bio or similar course. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I saw that. Do you know what that could include? I've taken animal health and hygiene, physiology of repro, animal anatomy... and a bunch of others. do you think they would count?! that would be great! I was really bummed at the thought of not applying here

I may be wrong, but it sounds like the main point of this was to have a biology course. If you look closely, the second listing is simply an Intro Biology course equivalent.

hm... maybe I'm misunderstanding it, but it seems like they want a zoology course or equivalent AND the biology course?

I guess that seems right, but you said you have an animal physiology right? So I think as long as you've got a full year of Biology as well as the animal anatomy, you should be golden! But you should call and ask. Anna is the lady who answers questions and she usually picks up right away and has all the answers to your questions 👍

Yeah, call Anna Teague. She's the best.

The requirement is to have another biology type course on top of your basic bio. So I think that would be something like... animal biology, plant biology, any thing with biology in the name... and physiology would probably work as well/

I am joining the OK applicant pool. Whats OK like??? I have never been in that region of the US.

Flat, windy. Red dirt. Nice people. Hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. Awesome thunderstorms in springtime. Cheap, cheap rent and gas. Lots of republicans, though Stillwater is much more dilute than any of the smaller towns so it's not a huge issue, just know that you will be stuck in a red state. 😉

Well said! I grew up on the Texas side of the panhandle by 10 miles, but the only difference is our dirt is pure sand. I've been in Los Angeles for the past ten years, so coming home is going to take some readjusting 🙄

Sounds good, I think I can do it 🙂 Well it cant be too much red-er than VA... LOL

I have always preferred the heat. Whats the program like? (that isnt showcased in the website... sorry for prying, I just want to be knowledgeable on the program before I apply 🙂 )

What's there to say? It's pretty traditional. The faculty is nice. The facilities aren't the newest but they are maintained well and we have what we need - not lacking in any major technologies or anything.

It's easier to answer more specific questions...

One thing I like about OSU is that we don't track. I like getting a well-rounded vet education. If you want to go into one area more specifically there are electives you can take to get that extra knowledge. I feel like I am getting a good education here. A lot of my classmates do the zuku review question of the day and being through second year I can answer a lot of them so it makes me feel more confident about having to take the NAVLE next year. There are a lot of opportunities for students in all areas of vet med. We do Path Rounds once a week, Food Animal rounds have started once a week, there are several hands-on electives, research opportunities, foal team, tech positions at the hospital for students, etc. All of our clinicians encourage all students to spend time in the hospital and are very open to answering any questions. The Path professors even have a band and will play for you in class. There are a ton of clubs that cover pretty much all areas of vet med so there is something for everyone. Like TT said, the facilities are a little dated but well maintained and they are always making improvements like the recently renovated small animal ICU. We got an MRI last semester. There are plans in the works for a new classroom building but it hasn't been started yet.

As for Stillwater, it has a small town feel. It is truly a college town so there are plenty of things to do on a Friday night. OSU sports have a very dedicated fan base (myself included) and football gamedays are a little crazy. Our restaurant selection is a little limited but it is improving. We have had several new restaurants and fast food places open in the last year. It gets pretty hot in the summer but our winters usually aren't too bad. Our thunderstorms are awesome. I love them. I don't think we had enough of them this year. Tornadoes aren't as common as OOS might think. And if there is a tornado, you get plenty of warning. I have never actually seen a tornado and I have lived in OK all my life.

Sorry for such a long response, I was trying to be thorough. If you have more specific questions, let me know!

Just fixing. AC will be your friend.

Agree with most of the rest. I wish there was a little more to the town. A decent grocery store would be amazing. I tend to stock up at Whole Foods in OKC a few times a year and hit the farmers market when I can. There are two walmarts, a food pyramid, and an IGA, and I'm not very impressed with the produce at any of them. There's a tiny organic store, but I cant afford to shop there very often. OKC is pretty awesome, and only about an hour/hour and a half away if anyone is like me and has some places they just can't live without. There are Dunkin donuts there, a shopping mall, an outlet center, kohls, target, and just about every other store imaginable. Good restaurants too.

Same goes for Tulsa- not too far away, not quite as many options as OKC when it comes to shopping (no outlet center, no dunkin donuts), but some really good restaurants.

If you like outdoorsy stuff, there are some nice state parks within a few hours drive of Stillwater with some good hiking and camping areas. I make quite a few day trips over the course of the semester as time allows. Within Stillwater, there are a couple small lakes (ponds) as well with walking trails around them, and just outside Stilly are two larger lakes and trails. The shortest trail I've found at those big lakes are just over 4 miles, and you could easily go a lot farther if you wanted to. All of the above are very dog friendly, and I never have a problem letting my two romp off leash.

I dont know much about the SA aspect of things, but I love our large animal teaching hospital. Great clinicians, pretty good case load most of the year, lots of interesting things coming and going and all the time. There have been times I've just been wandering around the hospital, and next thing I know, I'm in surgery watching something awesome. The equine case load seems to me like its dropped a bit this year, but hopefully that will pick back up. Things have been a little crazy over there with professors leaving, new professors starting, maternity leaves, etc etc. I'm involved with the foal team and the tech positions that Lissa mentioned, and would be happy to answer any questions about those.

The program itself is traditional, like TT said. Three years of various -ologies. One year of clinics. During clinics, I think you can do 16 weeks of preceptors off campus. You have to take at least 13 credits of electives before fourth year starts, and there's a pretty good bunch to choose from. I havent had any trouble finding things I want to take. You'll have more trouble fitting them all into your schedule. If you like food animals, you'll find lots of hands on electives. The other species electives tend to be a little more classroom based. There is competition for some of the electives, but I havent had a problem yet, knock wood.

Hey cowgirla! I'd love more info about the foal team and tech positions. What are the hours/shifts usually like and in what departments? I hope it's not too rude to also ask about the pay (I'm curious what it is like in OK vs. my current job in expensive-county VA). I have nearly 2 years under my belt as a nurse and OR tech at an equine referral hospital and I'd really love to work in the teaching hospital to keep up on those skills and help with finances. This is timely since I'm currently working on super-scary loan stuff

To the c/o 2017 hopefuls, I'm pulling for you! I hope that I can be of some assistance to you all once I get settled in and learn how things work at OSU!

Foal team is volunteer. You'll have one assigned weeknight with your team, alternating primary and backup every other week. Shifts are generally 2-4 hours long and any time of the night. Each team also usually has two assigned weekends to be on call. Prevets can also do foal team, but as far as I know only vet students will be captains (make the schedule, organize shifts, training, etc). If you are in the aaep club, you get points for participating, and those go towards wetlabs and such.

Large animal tech positions hire in the spring. Don't expect much more than minimum wage for pay. You'll generally work two overnight shifts a month, and they expect most of the employees to stick around for summer and breaks (especially if it's your first summer working). They didn't enforce it as much this year and are getting screwed in the process with none of the new hires being in town so they will prob be a lot stricter about that next year. You'll work with one other student and do both food animal and equine. Lots of TPRs, physicals, giving IV/IM meds, oral meds, feeding, iv fluids, eye meds, cold hosing, etc. it can be really fun and educational or it can really drag on some nights. All depends on how busy the clinics are! If emergencies come in, you might be helping with those, or if the students come in to do a treatment, help with those, etc. there's generally a lot of downtime to get schoolwork done, as long as your brain can function at 3 am.

Almost done with the supplemental! All I have to do now is submit payment, but I'm trying to decide whether I should wait for my next paycheck or just transfer some money from my savings...

Well that's up to you, my ducky friend. No rush, though - you do have a couple months left before the deadline.

true true, I'm not stressing out about it just yet 🙂 honestly, it probably won't make much of a difference because either way I'm probably going to have to take money out of my savings 😛

It might be the competitiveness in me, but I didn't like our thread about to hit the second page! :meanie: I do have to say that my nerves are shot, but 99.5% of my application is done and I have people reading my PS. I am panicking to the extreme though because I am trying to get myself re-established as an OK resident by Aug 1, but one last class is until Aug 22. I've been talking with the Admins about it, but I'm skeered I won't qualify in time 🙁

In the meantime, I'm also trying to make myself study to retake the stupid GRE cause I screwed up my quantitative score. :smack: oh well.
