OK State c/o 2017 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Almost done with the supplemental! All I have to do now is submit payment, but I'm trying to decide whether I should wait for my next paycheck or just transfer some money from my savings...

So was the supplemental really just typing in my name and address again, or did I miss an essay prompt? 😕

that's it! Just easy basic stuff. unless I missed an essay too... lol

Well, here I was coming up with all kinds of things to make myself sound impressive!!

Glad I didn't have another essay to edit, but makes me wonder about that 50 bucks for confirmation that I indeed am applying to OK State :eyebrow:

There are only a couple of schools that don't do supplemental apps of some sort. If you want to fill out a bunch of extra crap, I can recommend a few schools for that. :d

Ohio state would be at the top of my list for that. OMFG. By this last cycle I don't even remember the rest of the supplementals, I was so done!

Ack!!! NO NO NO!!! I'll just hope the money goes towards awesome vet student goodies 😀

Oh my goodness! I just looked at the forecast for the rest of the week 😱 I hope all of you have an excellent air conditioning system! These last two summers have been incredible. I don't understand why some mad scientist hasn't developed that weather machine yet!!

Best cure for OK heat: Escaping.

I escapeded to the good old north east. 70s and 80s is much more my style than 110 🙂 Not at all looking forward to heading back west

Next summer when lissa and I are in clinics is going to suckkkkkkkkkkkkk

Pray for small animal rotations/radiology during the summer! Being in the barns must suck! It wasn't too bad today though. Storm moved in around 4 and the temp dropped to 78!

For all the current students, what has been your favorite experience in vet school so far? :soexcited:The worst? :beat: I just got told by my mentor about the first time she tried an amputation on her own. Her mentor had to be in a meeting off site, and it was late when the surgery was finally able to be done, and she said she could handle it. Turns out the the dog (a med-large mixed breed), had an unusually placed femoral artery... and she sliced right through it! Blood sprayed throughout the surgery as if from out of a horror film. She panicked and called her mentor, who said he'd be there as soon as possible... but of course that would have been too late. So she gathered herself, located the artery and tied it off. The rest of the surgery went off without a hitch. Not bad for a first time amputation! 😱 :barf: 😆 😴

Fave: Food Animal techniques class. Castrations, epidurals, regional anesthesia, catheters, nerve blocks, orogastric tubes and anything else hands on you can imagine.

Least fave: I think immunology lecture wins the prize on that one 😴 Although some other lectures were a close second

Keep in mind I am only through 2 years and the best year (4th) is yet to come. My favorite experience would be my Advanced Food Animal Techniques elective (edit: damn, cowgirla beat me to it). Super hands on and we got to do a ton of stuff ourselves. We did everything from epidurals, vaccines, dehorning, castrating, and so much more. I learned so much in just 6 weeks. I also got to see a "face-ectomy" of a dog. They literally cut it's nose off (because of adenocarcinoma IIRC) and made him a new one out of his lips. That was pretty cool but ranks lower since I didn't get to do anything but watch.

I think my least favorite experience is our Intro to Clinic class. It had the potential to be really good but for all of the cool cases we were assigned, the animal was too sick for us to handle/do PEs on. It was a lot of sitting around looking in books for answers to questions we didn't know enough to answer. We still learned a lot though so I guess it wasn't worthless.

Foal team is volunteer. You'll have one assigned weeknight with your team, alternating primary and backup every other week. Shifts are generally 2-4 hours long and any time of the night. Each team also usually has two assigned weekends to be on call. Prevets can also do foal team, but as far as I know only vet students will be captains (make the schedule, organize shifts, training, etc). If you are in the aaep club, you get points for participating, and those go towards wetlabs and such.

Large animal tech positions hire in the spring. Don't expect much more than minimum wage for pay. You'll generally work two overnight shifts a month, and they expect most of the employees to stick around for summer and breaks (especially if it's your first summer working). They didn't enforce it as much this year and are getting screwed in the process with none of the new hires being in town so they will prob be a lot stricter about that next year. You'll work with one other student and do both food animal and equine. Lots of TPRs, physicals, giving IV/IM meds, oral meds, feeding, iv fluids, eye meds, cold hosing, etc. it can be really fun and educational or it can really drag on some nights. All depends on how busy the clinics are! If emergencies come in, you might be helping with those, or if the students come in to do a treatment, help with those, etc. there's generally a lot of downtime to get schoolwork done, as long as your brain can function at 3 am.

Thanks for your thorough response! That was super helpful 🙂 One last question - is it the foal team's duty to check mares for signs of foaling or is it "foal sitting" (sitting with recumbent foals and keeping them sternal, etc.) or actually doing the treatments? I'm assuming no treatments if the shifts are only a couple/few hours long? In any case, I definitely plan on exploring those work opportunities! Thanks again!

I'm relieved that the good stuff hasn't happened yet (I thought maybe I slept through the fun part) but I don't want into to clinics to suck. At least make it okay enough that I wouldn't rather be in phys or something - lol.

Sigh, I figured that lectures were going to be on the low end. Sounds like the Large Animal techniques wins the most fun prize! We'll have to revisit this as each of you hits fourth year rotations

Anyone know how hard it is for an OOS student to be accepted at OK?

I would say impossible with that particular avatar!!! :meanie:

Otherwise, it is one of the most friendly to OOS. 24 is the finite number listed on their web page, however, I imagine it depends on the applicant pool. I'm sure those that are there can tell you for sure. Twelvetigers or Lissa are great about answering questions on this thread, so they will probably give you confirmation 👍

submitted the supplemental and payment today! feels good to check more things off the list. 🙂

Yay!! I went ahead and sent mine a while back. I'm also done with my VMCAS and PS, just have one more eLOR person needing to submit, and am currently in the process of moving back to reestablish residency. I lucked out and the local vet was hiring, so I have a job. Now I'm :xf: the application is enough to get me the interview, I don't screw that up, and I become a cowboy vet 🙂

:luck::luck::luck::luck: To everyone for these last bit of application days! They're going fast!

So Oklahoma is on my short list (still trying to pick my schools and balance it with my meager bank account). I hear a lot of you talking about Large animal, but what about small? Also, how Dog friendly is Stillwater? Would it be fairly easy to find a nice rental that allows dogs and has a yard? This was a huge issue when starting my Graduate program and forced me to push back my acceptance a semester while I struggled to find a place to live. (of course it doesnt help that my dogs are Dobermans😍 )

I have certainly appreciated reading this thread. thanks guys!

The great thing about Oklahoma State (IMO anyway) is that they don't track so you get a lot of exposure to both Large and Small Animal med. You can take electives to place more emphasis on one or the other but you can also spread yourself out if you want. Stillwater is becoming increasingly dog friendly. I live in a different town but before I moved they were getting ready to put in a dog park and it might be done (I'm not sure). There is plenty of housing that allows pets as well.

The dog park is done, although I just got back into town last week and have yet to figure out where it is!

As for renting- many places are hit or miss. There are some really nice rentals, and some major dumps. Be prepared to come down here and spend a weekend or so house hunting, but there are good places out there! Unless you have very expensive tastes and want a place without absolutely nothing wrong with it - those places are prob on the pricey side. It is a college town, after all. I love my house, but its definitely got its little issues. It's not a house I would ever buy, but I'm quite happy living/renting here and letting my landlord deal with repairs.

I've got a house with a yard for two dogs with no deposit or pet rent, although I seem to be a minority. Most places I looked at required one or the other. My landlady is pretty awesome though and I could probably sneak in a few more pets without a problem  There are a ton of houses in the neighborhoods behind the vet school and a good chunk of them are pet friendly based off the people I've seen walking / dogs I've seen in yards. There are also pet friendly apartment complexes if you dont want to go the house route, but they obviously won't have a yard!

ETA: and just a word of warning- my idea of a "yard" and most landlords idea of a "yard" is very different. I looked at some places advertised as having a yard and it was literally no bigger than 6 ft x 6ft

Hey Whyevernot, how did the orientation go? I remember you saying something about it fixing to happen on the Rant/should it be a Rave thread, so I wanted to know what you thought of it. 🙂

Orientation was actually really good. They completely revamped it this year for our class, and it was long and exhausting but very well-done. We had 2 full days of team-building, group activities, etc etc based off the VLE program, and one afternoon on the nitty-gritty "HERE'S A TON OF PAPERWORK" stuff. Especially as an OOS student it was really helpful to have several days of forced interaction - I got to meet almost everyone, make some friends (including some SDN people, both in my class and in other classes!), and I feel much better about knowing some people! I think we're all excited to start classes tomorrow!

Awesome! Always good to have people who are going through the same anxiety as you  Good luck with your classes! I look forward to hearing what you think as time goes by.

Just felt like bumping this thread... I'm going to be in Shawnee next week for a quick internship and am hoping we have enough time to make it upto Stillwater to see the vet school 🙂 is it cooling down in Oklahoma yet? Still hot and humid over here in so cal.

Still hot, but mostly doesn't feel like hell anymore. Lots of days in the 90s, a few dipping down into the 80s, but a few reaching 100 too. Looks like we're getting some rain tonight though! =does the rain dance=

I'd offer you a tour, but looks like my week is pretty packed except for possibly Wednesday afternoon.

It actually cooled down a LOT tonight, and I think next week is supposed to be decent! Definitely stop by if you can! I'd offer a tour but I'm also busy, and since I'm only in my 3rd week I feel like I'm probably considerably less qualified than cowgirla or TT, lol. You can also call the admissions office and arrange a tour through them, and the student who gives it would probably appreciate the money.

Also, an update for anyone on the fence about applying here - I am an OOS student from the northeast and was hesitant to apply, but I (and the rest of my class) have survived our first three weeks. If anyone has questions about the program or how things work, feel free to PM me - I think the first year schedule/structure has changed some. Also I got to castrate a goat this week. In my third week of vet school. So, that was awesome.

I'm pretty sure everyone is really busy, I was planning on calling the office and asking for a tour if I have time. I'm really excited 🙂

I got in trouble for stealing tours from the people that get paid to do them. Lol. So call and make an appt... but I would be happy to meet up over coffee or whatever at least for a little bit. We have an exam Friday and that's all, but I do need to study. Haha.

Hi! I was wondering if anyone else has submitted and paid for their supplemental yet? I paid for mine, but it doesn't say on the site that I have. If I click on the link for payment, it just takes me to the site so I could pay again. I wanted to see if is the same for everyone else, so I can be sure my payment didn't get messed up somehow :/ Thanks!

Hmm I never got one and I submitted and paid a few days ago. I'll probably just call or email admissions tomorrow to see what happened.

That video is pretty cool! makes me glad I decided to apply to OK 🙂

Howdy All!! Just taking a quick minute of internet time to wish all the OK State peeps :luck::xf: I have been crazy busy at my rural hospital with preg checks and getting ready for a spring calving season like no other!! I love being back amongst the cattle and horses again. Miss having internet connections and phone reception though! I sure miss you all and hope the future vets are doing well and all us hoping for CO '17 get in our dream schools and those of you still on the undergrad journey get all A's 😍

He guys,
So I was looking over the website and I guess I missed this, the first million times I read through. It says Oklahoma does not do interviews for OOS students? Is that correct? So does that mean everyone has to wait until March for acceptance/rejection?

I still need an animal nutrition class (I have human, and some other similar classes, but they dont count) so I was sort of hoping I would hear something from them before I need to find one (The only one offered at my school coincides with a required course for my degree). Guess that may not be an option. Has anyone taken one of these courses through correspondence, that they enjoyed?

That is correct. They interview IS in February and then everyone gets acceptance/rejection in mid-March. However, I seem to remember people getting earlier rejections last year.

I wouldn't say I enjoyed It but the okstate animal nutrition course was pretty painless and not too expensive.

I heard in March from them last year. If you want to try holding off on taking the course, I'd check with admissions to see if it may be completed over the summer. You can easily fit in an online course in that time. I can't remember if it they need to have a grade for it before the beginning of summer or not.

And I took my animal nutrition course through K State. More expensive than OK state but I felt it was pretty easy. However, it does have to be completed in a semester, so you'd have to apply to take it in the spring.

If I remember correctly, the deadline for OK state is July 1st-ish.

Theoretically, you could wait to hear from them in March, then take the online course and just try to cram it all in before July. I did the first exam, and then waited about 7 mo before doing the other three all in 10 days- took 2 exams on the same day at one point. So it is possible to get it done quick if you have the time to dedicate to it, find a proctor, etc.

It was due June 15th this past year because when I was accepted they made sure to remind me it would all mean nothing if I didn't complete it by then.🙄 And it takes 6-8 weeks to complete the course if you really push it. Not because of you, but mostly because of the time with the mail and grading and they require you to turn in so many assignments before you can get the first exam, etc. And you have to send in for exams at least 2 weeks before you take them. I also took 2 exams on the same day twice actually. I took 10 months to "finish it" but about 6 weeks of cramming it all into my head at the very end :meanie:

Thanks guys, That is very helpful. so do I need to get a proctor for the exams? How many are there? Also, when you took the tests, how long are they? My school offers proctoring services but it is $10 an hour, so that could be a large expense, potentially.
Maybe I should just bite the bullet and pay for it ( I just hate spending MORE money, if I don't need to.) so I can start working on it over winter break. They say it needs to be done by May 15th, but I am in my last semester of my Masters degree and have comps around that same time, too. How long after you signed up did you get your materials to start? was that 2 weeks too?

I think there were four. Maybe five? Most of them took <30 minutes, and that was with me taking my time lol.
My local library proctored at no charge, which was awesome of them.

I don't remember much about the timeline of getting all the materials and that. It was a while ago 🙂
